Thts a fair ride, yup go down the western acess. (out behind tokoroa) is a more exciting way to get down to taupo. Last I heard there was still major road works and a 10km-ish gravel detour at arahina (1/3 way through)
Quite do-able in one day. Did it once on my VT-250 by accident, only ment to go to taupo but get distracted and ended up in turangi for BK....

Have had mixed results with hamilton motorcycles front of shop but their parts dept are really good, never dealt with their workshop guys.
I take my bike to speedtech because they are good mates and they know what they are doing - not saying others don't know.
It would be good to see you come along on a wednesday dude, we have a great group.
I have a few mates with dukes who have always gone there hence the suggestion as they are duke, kawasaki, trump, bmw agents....but if you are on to a good grp of guys then stick with them. I have been going to Boyds since I had the BB & won't change as they are a really good bunch of guys & girls

Mister Koz, I seen you heading down to naki friday nite good weekend was it?
Yeah man, blatted down to see my dad it was great :) the roads were quite good, only a couple of patches of road works and they were easily manageable i forgot how many trucks frequented that road... not much of an effort to get past them tho.
We rode around some of the back roads in naki (dad's 1100 is out of action so he had is xj400) there are LOTS of bikes down there... couldn't believe it!
I came back on saturday avo which was a faster run than on the way down (less coffee and there fore less pitstops) totally stuffed my line up on messenger on the way back, 4 35k corners were sweet then hit the 55 all wrong.
Bloody good ride!
I've got a plan to take a crew down mid to late feb, stay in new plymouth the night and pick up my old man and possibly others, do the forgotten highway and head back to hams
http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/Taranaki-loop11017
I am still working on the BP stations that have 98 to seperate the trip out right and i will sus out accommodation closer to the time when i have a definite idea of numbers. A chase car would be cool to hold onto gear but i am not holding my breath.

I was having a break at a rest stop when I seen you go by....all the bikes where in the region for the KB chateau/plateau run, I went home via SH43 on the sunday & at the whangamomona hotel there would have easily been 200+ bikes everywhere. Very keen on your naki trip, I will hopefully be heading down for womad in March also.. keep us informed & may see you fellas on sunday

Wicked :) would have loved to see the 200 bikes parked up! sounds awesome. I am thinking of planning the naki trip about 3 weeks out so people can see the foreseeable future clearer, will keep you posted anyways.
Same bat time same bat channel sunday, still don't know where we are going yet but i will aim for the 250km mark with a BP in the middle.

My old man will know those roads pretty well, the map's just a guide as he will lead us to some good roads. We could end up going down early and spending 1/2 the day on back roads :D
I wouldn't mind going up to the top of the mountain road (sealed) as well, its a stunning view and quite a hill climb.

A lap I have been doing lately from SH43 is once you hit taumarunui head nth on SH4 turn right at Ongarue turn off follow through to Waimiha on to SH30 turn right head to bennydale, after a few kms you come to a junction that allows you to either head to Whakamaru or you carry on to Waipapa rd... I normally head to the dam cafe in Whakamaru for coffee then on to old taupo rd & home. The road you have chosen to go through to Ohura is suitable for GOATS & SHEEP ONLY..... meaning it's very narrow, met up with a stock truck on that road once not nice :dodge::dodge::dodge:

I normally head to the dam cafe in Whakamaru for coffee then on to old taupo rd & home. The road you have chosen to go through to Ohura is suitable for GOATS & SHEEP ONLY..... meaning it's very narrow, met up with a stock truck on that road once not nice :dodge::dodge::dodge:
Sounds nasty :s

Yes purchase coming along. Just picked up my new / modified leathers yesterday and got a helmet the other week. So 2b out riding is an imminent event.
I posted up a thread about my first ride after 4 months rescuing my daughters bike :)

What did you get mod'd on your leathers?
I found a cheap DRZSM in Aus that I could import at no cost but Im struggling with buying a bike that mite get ridden 30 min a week...
I think I will just save that money towards the south island run in Feb/March next year. Still trying to figure out what to buy for that trip... Maybe just an older vfr800 or something? Only want to spend round 10-15k as will sell / trade the bike straight after the trip on something I want to keep long term.

Mr Rock..... From someone with a hand injury....
Swelling is the start of scar tissue. Scar tissue will render your hand inoperative.
If I was healing again I would go to any length to reduce that swelling. Most likely that would have been sleeping with my hand raised.
You better know re-mobilizing your hand is a depressing experience.
I am 4 months from date of injury, 2.5 months from splint off. I need to work my left hand (fingers) all the time to try and make a fist. This is only because scar tissue has formed in all joints and the only way to re-mobilize is through pain and persistence.
I have also lost a large portion of grip strength to both hands (left hand - complex fractures, right hand was dislocated and broken)
Grip strength on left/right hand was down to 10kg/15kg. Male adult should be ~30-50kg minimum. (I know someone with 90kg grip strength).
Long long road to recovery.
Thats enough depressing talk. Likely to be picking up replacement bike tomorrow :)
Not sure how far I will be able to ride as left shoulder is not back to full strength.
Kiwibike Insurance have come up with the best price on insuring a '90 vintage machine so they will likely get my business.

Well, had a great ride today, the road was pretty hot most of the way.
After setting off from the hotel with mostly full bellies we skipped out gordonton to the swamp roads and rounded up in paeroa all steamy and wanting more wind.
The road from Paeroa - Kopu - Whangamata was wrought with cars but was enjoyable all the same.
We skipped the swim cause i was the only one who brought my togs and the thought of ckai skinny dipping was too much to bare. Stopped in whangas for some much needed shade and chopped cars up on the way to Paeroa - looks like 1/2 of the country was leaving the coromandel at the same time we were....
After a quick roll through the swamp roads a few of us had a short stop at the pub for some quick refreshments (redbull + orange for me) at about 430pm
Well done tracy, trina and leyton. Its a fairly hard road and quite a trial in that heat but you guys came through with smiles on your faces and bugs on your bikes.

Just my 10c worth, the road from Waimiha to Bennydale is pretty cool then on wards to whakamaru for coffee etc then home via old taupo rd, it's only a suggestion as sh4 can be abit boring & the turn off to waimiha is'nt that far from where you come out from aria....those with smaller gas tanks can fill up at Pio Pio & should make it all the way home

I agree its a great piece of road, just dont think neveryone would be into 370km that it would make the ride.
At about 300 it is longer than i had planned.
And if you want to make it a serious ride you might as well head to kawhia, te anga, then waitomo, now that would be a fun day.

Ditto to all the above. One of the best and would love to do again when we get stuck for a route.
12 bikes started out and 10 finished. A few had to go early. My tacho registered 311 kms from hotel to hotel so a good ride and not so late back.
We sort of did a count of people not on the ride (at the pub) and came up with ckai, brooke, millen, donna, dave, krissie, sharon, craig ,bryce (came to pub),adamm and jess, squid (mainlander now),richard, munta, ian, slofox, geene,
rom, wysper, amanda and not to mention a few others!! If all turned up we would have 25 bikes+, cool

Going down the west coast on a bike if you had fine weather would just be the greatest ay. A really good mix of strights and loads of twisties that Paddy would lose most of his foot pegs on. You would just want a bike that will do at least 180+kms to a tank though. Some of the gas stations are quite far apart. Whats the range on your bikey Hatchet? *runs off giggling*

And more fun it will be!
But rather than be intimidated by it you should just enjoy it (with respect for the power). Ride within your limits and there is nothing to worry about, concentrate on your entry and through corner speed / smoothness first, once you've got that sorted you will find yourself winding the gas on through and out of the corners with comfort and confidence, providing you stay within you limits the faster part will come naturally as you progress.
I cant often make it out with you lot on sundays but good to see the rides are still going strong.

Yeah, but i reckon that the lower torque makes them easier to ride at lower speeds, making them good intermediary for people going from 250's.

CAMBRIDGE-HAMILTON TOY RUN ON SUNDAY.
It seems quite a few are interested in doing this ride on Sunday (hope the weathers good) so if we meet at the Hotel we will have to leave approx 9.45ish at the latest as briefing is 10.30 departing Cambridge 11.00 am. Allowing time to register and get the badge etc means the earlier leaving time!! Those who want to do their own thing, may see you Sunday morning before we leave. They are hoping for nearly 1,000 bikes this year but I think thats highly dependent on weather
cheers

If you think it would be fun to wreck (or even imply you would) a fund raising ride in support of the Child Cancer foundation you are way sicker than I thought.

I wouldn't even respond Murray, he's just like an itch; if you ignore him he'll go away, but scratch and he'll get worse

Generally none of us do, but I just thought I would point out he's building up bad kharma points big time.

Weather looks good for Sunday, I was worried I was going to have to fit a snorkle kit to the Hyosung.

Pootling through Te Awamutu yesterday morning and there was a bunch of old buggers on Harleys parked up in the main street...one of the Harleys had a high side trailer attached which was full of teddy bears...and they say a Harley doesn't have a plow attachment...!
Guess they were gearing up for the toy run. Or else they have a weird thing about soft toys going on...
I gave them the wave but I think they thought I was a young crazy on a sprotsbike so did not respond...that's old buggers for ya...

I still reckon harley riders don't wave because they are worried they might upset their already poorly balanced centre of gravity  but then i haven't ridden a harley so i should probably

Yeah but if you are used to holding on for dear life and not waving, it would be a habit to break :D
Dunno, i wave at everyone on 2 wheels, people wearing leathers walking towards bikes, hot chicks, kids who are all excited about a loud green bike riding past and people that look at me. Only done the 2 handed, 2 sided wave a couple of times.
It was such a buzz as i was starting out on my gn250 having people wave back, hopefully i will end up giving some noobie the same buzz :D
Idealistic/Romantic etc why not.

I found another issue with tomorrow :P My blinker relay is going hard out, so I have to fix this issue before tomorrow :)
Morel of the story, Even if you have a snorkle kit, Do not attempt to ride through the Waikato river to wet the electrics

All fixed :) Moisture in the hand controls on the indicator side as well as the terminal connection. The relays are those load sencing type, explains why it went off on its own from time to time :)
Quick strip down, blow out and reasemble and its a winner! *checks weather*
