Murray
1st November 2008, 11:08
Yeah, thats probably about right Pirongia - Kawhia is not actually that long (prob about 45 mins- hour max) depending on speed. I will be having a coffee at Pirongia, the first one on the left had side coming from Hams does great coffee

Yeah I know. I thought it would look better if I "improved" on it instead - you never know when she's watching/reading. It also may give me some brownie points.

Was that the "laxed out ride" I saw on Paterangi Road, just coming into Te Awamutu this morning? Due to inordinate demands from "significant others", I had to ride early this morning......I was heading back to Hammers by then.....and of course I had the worst of the weather......but oh well, a ride is a ride......

To those who missed out it was a great ride :) Weather was threatening for about 10 mins then perfect for the rest. Traffic was mild and the roads were good.

There was a mild panic and a pause when murry didn't show in kawhia, kane met up with him on the way out, apparently there was an accident and he stopped to help :s hope they are ok.

(cheerz kane)

Murray
3rd November 2008, 08:07
Hi Guys (and gals)
Great you enjoyed the ride out, its a good one eh!! basically what happened was coming up that first hill (the one with the 35km corner) 3 guys flew past me at a great rate of knots. about 20-30 seconds later I came round the corner at the top and the bike was in the ditch and the guy was flat on his back. We (me and 1 of the three riders) put him in the recovery position checked him over. Thought he had a broken leg at first but just really badly bruised. He had cuts on both arms , ruined his helmet and jacket and other than that was Ok. The other mate just continued racing all the way to Kawhia (you would have seen him hooning it on a yellow bike). So I stayed with the downed biker while the other guy went through to Kawhia to get their mate (some mate!!!). The bike and rider were in surprisingly good condition and shows that ending up in long grass and soft ground can save you. He estimated he was doing about 140km/hr around the corner and rimmed it. By my reckoning bike and rider went for 40-50 metres once going down. Still, all in all just glad the guys alive!!! David and Chrissie and the 1800cc beast showed up at the terapa tavern for a beer at about 4.00pm but had lost all you guys??? Catch you all next week maybe, if someone wants to organise a ride. And Brooke, I hear you did real well (You were ahead of me)

Bloody good day out. Really enjoyed it. It was good staying on someone's wheel on the way back and worked out a few things. As you lot noticed, I don't have that many k's under that belt and it was real good way of clocking them up. Much more fun then going on solo missions.

Bloody good ride to Oto as well. Will definitely be doing that "block" a few times. Will most probably end up in Wellington, but hey, it'll be fun :)

All I have to do now is work out who's who on here so I know what bikes they ride.

Good to hear everyone is (reasonably) OK. The dude on the mello' yellow was hauling ass so I can imagine his mates would have been doing the same.

Appreciate the encourage towards Brooke as well. I was kinda thinking I was holding you lot up as well but thought if you wanted to pass you would have. I mentioned that to her but you know how woman are.

How far is the coro loop?

TerminalAddict
3rd November 2008, 14:17
400 kms .................

Murray
3rd November 2008, 14:34
Personally think the Coro loop should wait until a better guarantee of good weather and make a big day of it. Breakfast etc etc beers afterwards.

I think we should be looking at route 22 (I think). Is that the one that continues up to Port Waikato??? Its a good twisty run with not too much traffic. And you can take the road out to Raglan turn up Waingaro way and through nike (or some name like that) Not sure if as mentioned above that the road goes into mercer??

This could be a good one. Lets see what everyone thinks.

Which way would you come back?

Murray
3rd November 2008, 14:58
?? I don't know, havent really looked at it. I think the idea was proposed by Mr Terminal Addict earlier and he mentioned Mercer. I have done the road (by cage) from Bombays to Port Waikato and back down through to Ngawahahia but cannot remember a road off it through to Mercer. Will have to do some map searches. Yes can do breakfasts for $10 for "laxed out ride members" on the Sunday mornings but would have to let me know numbers and 9.45ish at the latest.

"Mercer Ferry Road" cuts back to Mercer from 22......

ckai
3rd November 2008, 15:10
I see your logic Murray with the loop and reckon a full-day thing with beers after would be a goer. But the weather, like you said, would have to be a guarantee. We'll be able to do something like that in about 2 weeks time when the actual ankle biters go.

I know Brooke mentioned Port Waikato the other day and it's one of the few places in NZ I haven't been so I would be keen for that.

Brekky would make it even better.

mmmmmmm hash browns mmmmmmmmm:drool:

TerminalAddict
3rd November 2008, 15:20
SH22 from mercer ferry road to port waikato is pretty dull ..
Turn off towards mercer and stop for gas/coffee/smokes etc ;)

route back could be down SH1 .. turn east at Te Kauwhata, head down Waerenga road, south down waikare road towards orini, then join up to gordonton road, back to Hamilton

EDIT: if you decide to go all the way up 22 to port waikato, then pukekohe, you MUST stop for gas at bombay .. especially if you have thirsty triumphs amongst you ;) ..

but then you are stuck with SH1 return for some time ... if it is truly a "laxed" out ride then Mrs TA may come along (assuming it is not run on Saturdays . .when she sells motorbikes for a living ;) )

The better option I would think is reverse the route ... a pootle through north waikato, heading towards sh27, then on to bombay. Stop for food/drinks/smokes/sex/whatever . .then head down SH22 .. at least that way if smoky comes along he can save his hooning for the trip home :P

Murray

"Mercer Ferry Road" cuts back to Mercer from 22......

Is it sealed???, can only find a squiggly blue line on google maps. Mr addicts route back maybe the go. Not on SH1 for to long. Once someone makes a firm decision on the route, happy to do the breakfast and meet at the Kingsgate 9.30- 10.30. $10 breakfasts. Mr Quasi you are more than welcome. bring some off your gloves along so we can have alook (and the ones you will now have on special) Fat finger sizes please

Good to see so many people out again, had a great day out, with a very spirited trip back from Kawhia.
A ride north sounds good.
Im still working on a route south around Oto, trying to get it up around the 220-250 km mark. With only minimal main road usage. Will probably have to write up some directions as there will be a few turns along the way.
Not too many twisties, those that followed me on sunday have seen most of them, but there will be plenty of sweeping curves on back country roads.

Next sunday sounds to be a go from what I've been reading  Just to add to the mix... down south-ish waikato theres some v nice rides, for some reason I havnt done a whole lot of riding up past huntly ay. Change is good though

route back could be down SH1 .. turn east at Te Kauwhata, head down Waerenga road, south down waikare road towards orini, then join up to gordonton road, back to Hamilton

I think the "better option" maybe the go. Head off Gordonton road up the east side of SH1. Means we are on SH1 from Te Kauwhata to Bombays service centre but if we ride as a group at the legal speed limit there is safety in numbers. Then back down SH22. Those that may want to go out to Port Waikato could split off??? and depending on distance is whether ro head down to Raglan or cut back in at ngarwahia and back into town via river road.

Any yea's or neigh's??? Weather forecast is showers but that means jack-shit

OK. Working on Mr Terminal Addicts wisdom I have done the google maps thing and come up with the following.

meet Kingsgate carpark 10.30 am Sunday 9th Nov. Those who want $10 buffet breakfast 9.40ish.

The route: North along Gordonton Road, turn right Orini Rd, left at Rutherford rd, left at Tahuna rd, right Waiterimu rd, left Waikare rd, left Waerenga rd, through TeKauwhata. Up SH1 as group and either stop Pokeno and back via Pokeno rd, Wangarata rd, River rd(SH22) or Bombays and back Mill rd, Harrisville rd, through Tuakau (george street and onto River rd (SH22). At Waingaro turnoff either on to Raglan or through to Ngrawahia. Anyone wanting to head to Port Waikato speak up (but its a there and back type of road)

I hope all the roads are sealed!!! Mr Addict maybe able to elaborate

Sounds good. Since I haven't been to Port Waikato, I may go for a blat just to tick it off the list.

Although I know some of those roads, I think I'll be sitting behind on this one.

:Offtopic:

Would have loved to joing you but the snow and my board was calling rather loudly.....

What was it like Squid? I hung up the board last weekend after the wind and the crowd.
Most probably in for the brekky but Murray, I'll let you know by tonight/tomorrow.

OK. Working on Mr Terminal Addicts wisdom I have done the google maps thing and come up with the following.

meet Kingsgate carpark 10.30 am Sunday 9th Nov. Those who want $10 buffet breakfast 9.40ish.

The route: North along Gordonton Road, turn right Orini Rd, left at Rutherford rd, left at Tahuna rd, right , left Waikare rd, left Waerenga rd, through TeKauwhata. Anyone wanting to head to Port Waikato speak up (but its a there and back type of road)

nah mate if you cant see around it your right in not trusting it, ride it like there is a tractor parked on your exit.
With other corners just keep chasing that point between the inside road line and the outside road line (in your lane) the closer those two lines are the tighter the corner, the further apart the faster the corner.......................get it ??

if in doubt dont be going in to fast, ulitmate rule of thumb, slow in fast out.
go slow and work your pace up, get your lines and body positions soughted as well as the gear and braking work, get that all smooth, speed comes later (pref on the track)

hi all,

Did a lap in the weekend I thought you guys & girls may wish to look at one day.

Headed out from Te awamutu along SH3 all the way down to Mokau stoppedthere for coffee & munchies:clap: came back the same way, but got me a boogie on through the Awakino gorge turned off at Piopio headed up into Mairoa & Oparure down into Waitomo stoped for more coffe at the Huhu cafe then out towards Te anga, SH 31 then 39 crossed over to Te kawa onto Wharepuhunga rd followed this all the way to Mangatutu rd headed towards Paewhenua onto Otewa road back way into Otorohanga back onto SH39 headed towards Pirongia short detour through Bird rd & home:niceone:

Total kms @ 400+

there are many ways you can cross over, plenty of twisties for those who wish to get a boogie on & also plenty of fuel stops well within reach for those who don't have large fuel capacity.

I know SH3 may put you off but it's short lived & a nice way to allow those that have had a Murray breakie to digest it properly before letting go :devil2: :bleh:

Also could you add/amend after "left Tahuna Rd" should be "turn right Waiterimu rd" (for some reason this vanished from the original post). Good morning Mr Koz, its always a fine day when you wake up. I think Port Waikato seems a go, so should we finalise the route for the calendar. Probably best is the Bombays way (big petrol station, more food outlets, toilets etc) and then the turn of to Port Waikato is off River Rd (SH22). I estimate there and back is approx 60km so I would suggest that when we head back down SH22 we go Waingaro - Ngarawahia and back (petrol etc etc). Probably a trip of about 330 kms

I don't think I can do it on the calendar as you loaded it and I think only you can edit it. But if you take the reference to Pokeno out and then edit the bit after heading out of Bombays etc etc when you get to SH22 (river Road) you turn right to Port Waikato

Didn't make it for a ride today but would have liked to. Wasn't very happy when we were coming from Tauranga though and pulled over for three bikers (we were in our Car aka "cage") we were nice and gave them heaps of room to pass us and only the last one acknowledged us. Pricks. Then another two bikers passes us later on and we didn't the same and still no acknowledgment, that just gives us bikers bad names :girlfight: hope they weren't KBers!

Hello Hamilton KBer's

Was a great day for a ride, so me and fellow KBer "Rideon" (aka Dad) went for a ride. Dads always wanted to take me on the coromandel loop, so we did it,!!!!

Two stops, one in Whangamata for coffee, and then over the few hills to Coromandel for lunch, (highly recommend the BBQ pork ribs, from Pepper Tree).
then a nice pace over the last two hills, then down the Thames coast, where overtaking becomes a nice challenge for my ninja, but still very easy in the right spots.

Plenty of twisties, long straights, hills, cafes, traffic, everything a good ride should have, left at 8:30am, and got back around 5:30pm.

Heres a link to the loop we did:
http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/Big-Coromandel-loop

Great day out, maybe look at doing this as a nice long day trip with the Laxed out riders.

With any luck I will join you all Sunday next...but have a dance comp the night before which could mean a very late night if they fart around as is sometimes the case....but if I am half alert I will be there.......
I did ride yesterday - alone as usual - went down 39 to Otorohanga, back to Te Awamutu via Ouruwhero/Pokuru Road, south to Kihikihi, East through Parawera and beyond and then back North through Horahora, Maungatautari, Leamington etc.....then a quick afternoon fang on the Northern part of 39......
And for today's ride, see http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=85915

So hear begin my concerns....I have been on heaps of rides, some small, some large. But recently I have sat up and taken notice of how people ride in groups. And people ride badly!! I mean really badly!!

My first real eye opener was on the ‘Ride Against Violence’ (Auckland 7 Sep), there was a large amount of people there who simply did not have a clue about riding safely in large groups. The latest Auckland WIMA ride, saw more dangerous riding again and most recently the Boulevard Cruiser ride this Sunday took the cake. Some of the riders in that group were happy to travel on the motorway, at 100kph, 1-2 metres directly behind another bike, is it just me or is that really stupid? I have seen plenty of people jumping into staggered formation riding, causing some serious consternation and pissing off a few riders too.

Come on people, riding in groups is something we all need to learn, read up about it here: Ride Forever (http://www.rideforever.co.nz/road_awareness/group_riding.html)

Staggered Riding is explained as:
The minimum recommended spacing to the bike directly in front of you should not be less than two seconds (the two second rule). The bike in the lane to your left or right should not be less than one second ahead of you. You will find that two seconds is a long distance when riding at highway speeds. That is, it's a long distance when everything is going well. Unfortunately, when things go wrong, two seconds distance is gone in the time it takes to realize you are in trouble. The two second rule is a rule of thumb you should try to adhere to whenever possible. Especially at highway speeds. There are times, however, when it is best to squeeze together - while on city streets and slowing for a stop. This will help prevent cars from entering the group.

Riders, staggered riding!! Get used to it and ride to it!! Please!! This is also my life and my bike at risk as well as yours and the other road users around you.

People who are organising rides, please make sure you tell everyone about staggered riding before you leave, even if people do know how to ride in groups, reiterate it over and over, it only takes one person in a group to bugger it up for all of us.
:calm:

Since this group was originally put together in response to Munta looking for new riders with 250's etc and an opportunity to learn and ride with people and not get involved in a race I thought this posting may be of interest to those new to riding and group riding. Note we now have 13 registered for Sunday!!!!

Its always the destination thats important not how fast we get there!!!!

Cheers and hope to see some for breakfast at 9.30 Sunday, if you havent the munchies 10.30 Sunday. Looks like a great route!!

Good reminder Murray. Brooke and I took the brother-in-law for a ride the other day and noticed he was following directly behind me. We stopped and we gave him the low-down on riding staggered. It actually made it better to ride since I could see what everyone else was doing behind me.

It's interesting really. I thought he would have known about it since it's a question for the learner test and he had only just sat it a week before!

He took the new black beast out for a blat and found the road to be very good cept for a few road works and sticky tar. Thought it would be great for learning on :P It was only 100km but it took him awhile, and he had a sore arse.

pants wise i have recently got myself a pair of strada pants they are comfortable have reasonable armour and removable linings i think i paid about $120 for them good value. boots wise i have had a pair of sidi race boots for about 2 yrs comfy on bike and walking and also steel plate in the sole to help prevent crushing. but the choice is yours so choose carefully

Cool mate. Hey was that you I saw riding down Victoria Street this morning?

In terms of gear, have found Boyds have the best selection, Waikato Yamaha second. Hope you find some good stuff. I'm still looking for pants too.

IMO the boots that have a extra armored bit on the part of you ankle what sticks out are good. for sliding that is.

What have the rest of you found/think?

Yeah Quasi's a good one for gear and in Hamltn which is a bonus. Them Leather pants are what I've got, the knee sliders are abit on the thin side but can always get new ones. Leather is "fitting" its true cant wear your baggy jeans under them

OK so, the Dr I can remember, the first 2 I've heard of (which is scary in itself), but Ark II...?????

SilentNight, :) Those boots look alright. I think I was looking at the same ones. I always got the impression that Exustar was alright. Similar to his cousin Alpine but doesn't doesn't have quite the family jewels. They've got all the right stuff too so you can slide around corners on your toes.

A mate suggested to me to attach the toe sliders with a file so it looks like you "get your lean on". But he was a Pom so I never took advice from him.

from what ive found with boyds if your not careful and a learner rider or not up with how to know what gear you need boyds will bend you over and take you for a ride.. also they give discounts so much because all there gear is marked up way more than any other bike shop.. i have found the new honda hamilton to be awesome, got my teknic freeway jacket and matching pants for 500. RRP on jacket was 550 to start. also the gloves i have were priced at about 200 at boyds and when i went to honda hamilton they were on the shelf for 170 and i have seen this with the majority of stock at boyds.

so personally i will never go back to boyds.

Hiya Guys

Good to read a few of you are looking for gear, yes I agree its a nightmare trying to get it right, right fit, right spec, right price.

Murry has invited me to come along on Sunday to have a little bit of a gear display, Unfortunetly Im away on sunday I have an engagement with a Ducati 1098 which I need to keep :bleh:

however here is what I want to do for you guys

1/ I will leave a little bit of gear with Murry tomorrow so you can see the quality etc so you can discuss it freely, I will repeat the excercise on the next event so you can all grill me, I will also bring along some new cool stuff to show you.

3/ We are available anytime for visitors to look at gear after hours is no problem, contact me on 0275 430329 (Text will ring back) or 07 8550784

2/ A reasonable range of gear is now available at Supacross cycles also (just down from boyds), jackets pants gloves etc

Now anything that you guys buy from me (direct) for the rest of the month I will give you a 10% discount even if the item is on special !!!!

Damn! That is tempting! I have a decent jacket and most other stuff, but I was thinking about getting some good leather pants. I was going to get them before the cold weather next year, but I am a sucker for a good sale! I might have to pop down and take a look at your stock.

I have also been thinking about coming down for one of these rides - next couple of weekends don't really suit, but with the nice weather I am bound to make it at some point. I do visit the Waikato quite often anyway (family is down there, I was born in Matamata, etc.) so I am not opposed to a ride down to Hamilton followed by a ride around some great Waikato roads.

Ps guys i got my racer 9 2 piece suit and always wear it on the sunday rides any questions feel free to ask :)

If you can part with the $$ i would recommend a suit like mine, they are awesome and i think quasi's got them on super special at the moment.

I got oxtar boots which I HIGHLY recommend, got them from speed tech on kent st. Any questions on gear, just ask the guys on sunday, hopefully we can get quasi to come on our rides at some stage!

my tire was 100 bucks cheaper at boyds than at honda...
both shops are good, no doubt.
i can get full leather cover from a good brand for under 1k, thats cheaper than quasi!

I was looking at your suit the other ride. Thought it looked alright. Might have to get me one cause my dream is to be exactly like MR Kozzzzz. Now if only I can stop myself from  everytime I see the kwaka green :D:girlfight:

But the racer 9 does look good. It would look even better with yellow accents ;) Not too much, just enough to be different.

PS Thunderbirds are go haha
