Brooke, Jamroll and I went for a short blat around the local roads tonight. Short, because by the time Brooke got home from work it was getting on a bit. Wasn't bad getting the wheels turning again though.

Hi Murray,
yeah I am over 40 mins away and the showers were still hanging round. By the time it started to clear I would of missed you guys. Gutted. Glad you had a good ride though and it was dryer over your way.
As Cameron said, I met up with them for a short ride. Found some twisties but the low sun made some sections tricky. It was good to meet some of the group and enjoy the scenery

Looking forward to the 11th.

Cheers.

Hi all, Happy New Year.
Just got back from up north, Since leaving on the night of the 23rd ive covered nearly 1800km on the bike.
Did some of the classic biking roads of the far north.
Had a great time and im thinking of a major ride for later in the year. Got most things sorted but still a few details to sort. Will give more info on the first ride of the year.
Could be keen for a cruise this weekend if anyone is keen.

Sounds good. Cameron and I are away this weekend in Taupo (that's if he get's over his "man flu" I hear it's a bad one this year!) (otherwise it will just be me) as my Dad is racing there (his car not bike). I know that some of the others are coming on Sunday for the day to have a watch so if you're keen I'll PM you my number) Hope you had a good new year

Happy New Year everyone,
I was hoping for some advice and maybe some riding companions to do a loop of Mt Taranaki tomorrow. It looks like great weather and I have been wanting to do this ride for a while. I reckon the ride could be done in 9 hours without breaking the sound barrier.

The route: TA - Otorohanga - New Plymouth - Opunake - Hawera - Stratford - New Plymouth - TA

By my guess-timation it would be about 580km. Is this too ambitious? What do you guys reckon?

Happy New Year Jamroll..

I guess it really depends on how much you've been riding lately as to how comfortable it is for you to do it.. It definitly can be done..
Also i'm not sure of how much traffic you're going to be in on the way back tomorrow..

Cheers Spazm, I hope you've had a good holiday also.

I've finally found a position that is confortable on the bike, and can go upto 3 hours before needing a stop. I was wondering about the traffic though, hopefully all the holiday makers have gone home today since the weather is so bad!

Has anyone done highway 45 from NP to Hawera (around the coast) ?

I heard about the Chateau to plateau run later this month along the forgotten highway, but then found out there is a section of unsealed road approx 15km long. That well and truly put me off!

nah mate .. its a shame .. the missus and I (and a few other ham riders) love that road.

I'm off camping up north with the fam for that entire week.

But I could be temtped for a "warm up" around whangamomona on the 17th / 18th

Good to know mate, must be pretty hard-packed to do 60 on a sports bike :)

I am planning to go down to taranaki this route (http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/Taranaki-loop) mid february but i was warned about the gravel so i had decided to just do the run down and around the mountain and back up the main highway.

Brooke had mentioned that the road down there was wrought with road works, she said it would be slow going but manageable.

Anyways, i wish i could join you myself, got alot to do this weekend.

Have a good ride!

fyi .. the road around the mountain is painfully boring, unless you're into excessive speed.

I did it at 140kph, and it was boring ... the map makes it looks more interesting than it is

Last time I did whangamomona after looping down thru NP and stratford, I head north from taumaranui (sh4) , and back up to ham (sh3)

it was a full day ... 7 hours or so.

Thanks man, my motivation for going around the mountain is thats my homeland :) I wonder if going around the other side of the mountain would be better for the bordom status.

Was planning to stay over the night on the way down in waitara or new plymouth. might just make it a there, stay and back for now.

Hey Murray, Trina, Dave and Kryssie, it was great to see you in Taupo today. Dad came second in the last race and Mum was saying that he was only just passed and the end of the final lap and it was really close.

I hope you enjoyed the day. Thanks again for coming.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New year.

Has anyone done that Te Anga road recently? Spaz and I did it the other day. It's a good ride, even if you do nearly fall off the road and head butt the bank (the lesson we learn today children is that you don't look at the person in front of you and you look at your line instead).

Didn't someone throw that route idea around before? It would be cool for a future ride.

As Spaz said, no drop or anything like that, just a red face and a "that was dumb" moment. It like a "learn the hard way" type of thing but without the scares to remind you. I prefer them that way if they're gonna happen at all :)

It must have been my earth shattering reflexes that saved my ass...but more than likely someone looking out for my lucky ass (I suppose it helped we weren't pushing it and it was a slow corner before it).

Yeah I did tell Brooke. I thought it would be a good lesson for both of us to learn haha.

The Naki run was wicked. Great day for it so there were millions of bikes out. I liked the run around the coast. But heading back inland to Stratford it was dead straight roads most of the way. Luckily it didn't take long at warp factor 9 :shit:

Hi guys & gals,
Is any one a member of the Hamilton Motor Cycle Club? I found their website and they are also doing a ride on the 11th as follows:

"Start from BP Tristram St at 9am, going Via Te Uku to Waingaro to Highway 22 up to Mercer. Have Lunch/ get petrol. Then Home via backways Te Kauwhata, Lake Waikari, to Hamilton.
Finish up at a Cafe somewhere on the North side of Hamilton for debrief.......
Phone Dennis 8495117 for further details."

Well it looks like we may have a break in the weather on Sunday. Which is a bugger since I was hoping to spread my work load on the house over 2 days but now if it's clear on the Sunday, I'll have to go hard on the Saturday only :( Such is the life of a biker :scooter:

Its true we are all different on here.

Anyways, i am pretty sure i will be all good on monday, did a defensive driving course with ward fischer to shorten the restricted licence period and it turns out that its really good. After the videos and the group talks about pre-determination and threat analysis ward took each and everyone through the full licence course and pointed out where i should be looking and what i should be seeing. Very highly recommended!

How much and how long does it go for? Was thinking of doing something like that but if it's 2 dear I'm not going to bother. And it only saves me 3 months. Already did Advanced Driving for the car.

some manufacturers do lowering kits for the bikes if no luck with the manufacturers then try looking for an aftermarket one, it also might be worth speaking to hamilton mcycles about getting it done or better still try speedtech.

Yip they definitely can. I did know how much it costs but can't remember. I think they can drop them about 10cm may even be more. I would say you're looking at $200 min but wouldn't be surprised if it's more. They handle differently when they're lowered but it won't be that much of an issue (only if you're going flat nuts).

And, yes I got a lot on done on the house today :) Means I'm totally open for next weekend.

Hi all, good ride yesterday great to have that one shower towards the end and wash the bugs away. Welcome to Shane, Adam m and Jess and hope you can join us on your bike Hayley (squids pillion). Hope you all enjoyed the ride and company. It was pretty basic but good to kick off the year with what was anticipated to be a wet ride (Matamata was fine and warm).
Met up with Koz afterwards at Te Rapa and Eric & Tracey and we tossed around the idea of trying to meet after the rides for a beer or BBq or something. Probably discuss on Wednesday if anyones there. We also looked at a ride for next week with a bit of distance but not to taxing on newer riders, as Tracy has promised to come along and hopefully Chrissie and Donna will make it as well. It will have some good straights to start with some windy in the middle and straights to finish. Koz is doing up the map and will put on calendar soon. Might be a chance for a swim in the middle and prob best to bring a sandwich or 2. But should be back 4ish at the latest.

Hopefully all can make it (Have Erics leave pass for Triumph Track day - Have a good one) and weathers good.

I had a 1989 zxr250a the older 250's are inline 4's and are much more twitchy to ride, and they require quite a bit of looking after. Hornet sounds good :)

Hey dude,

All sound like good options, maybe we should have a yarn about groupings before we go on sunday, i am putting my tailbag on so i will be sweet storage but thats a really cool offer, i am hoping weather is good enough for a swim, there's a cool rock to jump off there :D

I will bring all these up tomorrow at the pub i think they are good ideas, i am sure there's a way to plan these things better.

I have put a few points on that map for gas and a cuppa tea just not noted them overly well in the calendar appt.

Nice to have some ideas but I personally take issue with the suggestions that fundamentally goes completely against what the whole group was set up for. If we are going to set off in separate groups with infrequent stops and designated tail end charlies we may as well form 3 groups doing there own ride and thing!! The whole idea of the group is to be one and ride at your own pace and groups will form naturally. As you will see by the calendar it is not a race, it is a group that new riders can join, ride at there own pace with others and feel comfortable. By placing riders into groups you set a competitive mindset and also ostracise the new learner and laxed out riders and they may as well join the other groups that ride to race, at the end of the day they are going to be at the back alone and meet up only at the end.

The beauty of this group is that most wait at any intersection where someone may take the wrong way and there are frequent stops so that the newer and laxed riders can catch up share a smoke, a question or just enjoy each others company. The faster riders can do their thing but realise that they may have to wait an extra 5 minutes when we all stop. (Gives Ian a chance for 2 smokes). By doing this we encourage newer riders and through this I feel we have made some pretty damn good friends, grown and continue to grow.

Well thats my sermon. another 11.pm finish 6am start. 2 days in a row so I am grumpy. Whens the pub open!!!

I agree with you murray the idea is that whatever your level of riding there is always someone else in the group at the same level so therefore you get tp ride in a group wether it be large or small. the faster riders can go at there pace and if they feel like can hang back with the learners and just cruise, im happy with that format because it gives me a chance to ride with a lot of different people.(2 smokes more like 3) especially if ive had an ass twitching moment see you all tonight.:shit:

Our horse is racing at 3.12pm today in Greymouth. All being good hopefully I may get to watch it at The Rapa. Names Polly Rocket Race 7, looks like it may go out favorite, its paying $5 at the mo and should win. No guarantees though!!!

Yeah i like the way we have it, i do think that we need to keep the numbers down perhaps we should move towards having 2 routes that meet in the middle somewhere as the group grows so its easier to keep track and head-count.

Not sure, we should have a yarn about it in person anyways.

Nice to have some ideas but I personally take issue with the suggestions that fundamentally goes completely against what the whole group was set up for...

Didn't mean to offend Murray, just noticed when there are a number of turns the fast guys (not me cos I'm a nana :) lol) are very-start-stop. Probably won't be an issue anyways this ride cos a lot of it will be main roads. Also, on the main roads designated stops would allow the back group to catch up (Koz has already looked at these).

I certainly wasn't suggesting having to stick to certain groups, because it is good to move around and cruise if you want. I was meaning a tail-end charlie more in the sense of safety to pick up on anyone having a problem and maybe phone ahead.

Beautiful day today, might go for a ride!

Murray
14th January 2009, 11:28
Thats cool, no offence taken, we sort of went through this group thing at about page 70 and generally it was felt people would ride at there own speed and we did not want people who were there to be the bestest and fastest and people should be able to sprint/cruise/tootle all in the same ride, with company. Generally I have taken up the tail end charlie role because Trina is a learner and I ride with her and only now and then do the fast thing on the straights and then lag behind again.

cheers and looking forward to Sunday

I see both your guys points. TEC (tail end charlies) for each "group" is good for safety but the way LOR works is natural selection so no one really knows what group they'll be in. That means the designated TEC may not end up being the TEC after long.

I suppose it's only an issue with the fast guys having to stop and start all the time like you've said Jam. But hey, if they don't like it, they shouldn't ride above 90 km/hr ;)

And Jam, if you offer you're bag space out you may find you'll get a lot of thongs in there that you just don't wanna know about! Expecially Koz' fluro green one

Dunno if we can make it tonight but we'll give it ago. We'll be over in the 'Tron tonight so might just pop in later to see if anyone is still around.

Yeah also the laxed out rides thing goes in all directions, so the fast guys generally don't mind waiting and the wait is usually not more than 10 mins apart from that time brooke collected a bug and the 2nd half stopped to help we were waiting for 20.

AND

I will be wearing my green thong UNDER my leathers than you very much, and i plan to swim in my pink leather teddy, you know the one with the hairy nipple holes.

I may need to borrow space for my fairy wings but they are less intrusive :innocent:

Not too sure about the 2000 models but Ive ridden a cuzzie's 199somthing one to raglan and back. Goes alright, sounds like a little F1 car when your opening the throttle. More sings rather than revs. Very progressive power curve though and no big suprises waiting on the rev range to jump out at you. Naked bike, I personaly dont like them but some do. Likes to stop too, I stoppied it whout really trying ay it was quite happy to lift the back end up. If the engine and gearbox is good and your happy with the seat height and that get it and come for a ride :2thumbsup

Have a look around the bike shops in hamilton, take some for a ride :) only you are going to know what comfortable to ride.

I am sure someone will be around to help :)

As for performance characteristics the 250cc inline 4's are very pitchy and twitchy. My old one literally sounded like an F1 car, they have a fair bit of horsepower (speed) and very little torque (real power) which makes them allot harder to ride compared to the twins and generally they aren't happy unless they are screaming.

Have you checked out tracy's, trina and donna's bikes?

I still don't get why you want to sell the hyosung for another sports bike???

Will do :) only seen a VTR at this stage though but il look closer at Traceys hopefully tonight.

Partly daves pushyness and partly the riding position which i didnt give much thought to since I have a kink in my neck. But then a lighter helmet may help with that. My arms just need a bit of strength, thats easy enough to do. I dont really know if I definatly want to sell it il just see whats out there and if something that is more comfortable comes along and I really like it then will see what happens. Its not that I dont like the bike. Yea its a bit high but that can possibly be fixed.

Im not getting many offers anyway and no one seems keen to buy it, maybe because there is so many around and you can get them cheaper then what Dave wants for it. Actually its probably just my lack of fitness to be honest. But that can be changed. lol.

Helmet's gotta be right, one of the best things i did was spend good money on a good helmet.

I think that most of the 250cc sport(ish) bikes will have a very similar riding position, if you don't like the riding position its probably a better idea to try a different type of bike :) Also, the naked sports and even the cruisers are better to get to grips with and easier to control at low speeds, they don't mow up the road as quick but allot of people find them more enjoyable to ride.

Just my 10c :)

Yeah man, ended up going around town a bit, the seating position on the gargoyle means that i get pretty tired arms quickly when i got a pillion, need to get used to it.

Holy shit!! Look at the suit cases on that thing! I wonder if the owner has touched them down. You can fit a small planet in them.

Yeah, its almost a 2-body storage area. Nice bike tho :) always liked the zzr 1100/1200 obviously not a nimble and nasty but i hear they run nicely on the long hauls.

I have not taken a pillion on it yet but given the upright position i would say that there would be no loading on the rider from the pillion unless it was under extreme braking. may be i should take you for a pillion before the sunday ride and then we will know the answer

Taking pillions on a sportsbike is a whole new wonderful world. Helps if your friends coz you end up getting mashed together anyways under breaking. Yes your arms do take more of the load so the pillion needs to be active and brace wh their knees and reach around you to push against the tank if possible. Main thing for them to do on the back is to RELAX, you can feel pretty much everthing they do ay. And sort out some signals and rules before you head off... Makes it ride so much more enjoyable for the both of you :blip:

(No SilientNinja Hayley isnt my GF btw)

haha I thought you were offering an experience to Koz there for a second. After your advice I can just imagine Koz hugging Ian going around corners all cozy like

Maybe I need to start taking chicks for rides on the back of the bike. Why hasn't someone told me about this earlier????

Depends on the bike and the rider, once your rolling the weight of the pillion compaired to the rider dosnt matter to to much I've found. Took my dad out for a spin and he's not as skinny as he used to be... Just at stops if you both put the left foot down its all gravy baby.

Ckai, dunno about you but one cant really cuddle in leathers :Pokey: and a 100kph-ish hug isnt in the slightest romantic

That aside once your pillion is comfortable on the back and your comfortable riding with them its really quite fun and you can zip along at 100 no worries.

This is a point, just got to get used to the dynamics of stopping with totally different weight distribution :) michelle is tiny so there's not going to be that much trouble :)

Thank you for your advice dude.

I will come for a ride if you need to learn. i have had pillions on the back around a race track for doubles racing. lots of fun having your balls mashed into the tank.
Kryssie was on the back of the 250 i have, She is heavier than me but you can still ride in controll with practise. Like the others said, just need them to relax and go with the bike, dont fight around corners, and riding at slow speeds, like intersections and road works, just get them sitting straight and forward, passengers like to look around your body.

i will let you know Ian when the general comes out on the road. Just remember easy on the gas as you have weight behind the back wheel. and your braking has dropped and need to slow down before corners and not hard. unless you have a nut or dont need kids.

Hey mate, if you can't come this sunday, come along on wednesday next week, do you know where the te rapa tavern is? Its not a piss up just a wide open area where we all sit round and talk about bikes allot :)

In other news, i stumbled apon this today:
http://www.customskins.co.nz/
These are aftermarket scratch kits that protect your fairings from stones and the like. Could be a good option, i know the ones for my bike are $350 from kawasaki and $200 at this place.

Anyways.

I hate to sound like a net nanny but;

There were no deaths and no broken bones, beyond that I would rather we don't talk about the what happened on here. The people concerned have a right to the first voice on the matter, or the right to keep it to themselves if they so wish.

and this is the same fate all group rides comes to in Hamilton ...

you post a group ride online, and have people turn up that you don't want there .... wish I was in Manawatu for their rides .. people actually like each other :eek5:

I doubt I will be joining in with you lot again, as it was quite obvious I was "an odd ball" a "fifth wheel" ... or some such .. who knows

I'm not beyond riding to the Manawatu to ride with a group that rides well together .. its happened before, and will probably happen again :D

I may have also been involved in the inaugural South Auckland Thursday Night Ride :2thumbsup

I seem to remember being instrumental in the Hamilton Wednesday Night Ride, until it suffered the same fate .. it seems those days are gone ... I never see Road Rash, Deeknow, 2 Wheel madness, bnonn, Smoky any more :(

On the upside, Warr is healing, and has a replacement bike lined up, so I may have a riding buddy back soon.

But the Hornet is not shy of being solo on the road
