That little patch of loose shingle on the Scargill Valley rd last week was sort of a non event.
I know that Flip was wise to slow down because of his belt Drive,
But, well, umm, it was just shingle ............
I guess that riding road bikes on shingle roads is not something a lot of you guys get to do.
Just relax and enjoy the feel of your machine dancing under you,
Its sort of hard to put into words the way to ride on shingle or grass with street tyres on a heavy bike,
but once you get the confidence to do so, it can become a lot of fun,
its just a different style of riding you have to adapt to.
I;m sure there are some amoung us, like myself, who rode shingle roads many years ago before the advent of modern machinery that can only really perform on sealed surfaces.
:devil2:
I agree, it's something I do have to get used too and I guess the more I do it (like with everything else) the better I'll get!
Yes you slowed down so much that the snails(that is me) went racing past you.:rolleyes::lol::lol:
Well I did have to let you catch up :bleh:

They can clamp onto just about anything that sticks out a bit. I used to put them on the handlebars or mirror mount or some such. We'll just get creative :)
I have two cameras that people can mount. Sammcj, want the other?
Problem is I only have one SD card. It'll take up to a 2gb, no more. They're old hat!
Are they just the same cards that go in digital cameras? Cause I have a 1gig one I could bring along if that would help? Or is it just one card for all the cameras? I have no idea how it all works!

Big thanks for letting me straddle your beauti blue duke, awesome to have been on the legend of twins.
Yeah cruza good bikes, did a lot of research before deciding on the XR, seemed the best all-rounder - no 300 hour rebuilds like the german counter part or other rice burner models .
300 hours - 9000 km's lololl had the XR for only 3 months and already done 2500 k's
Can get the magic button kit for US$1300 if kick starting a pain.
Thumbs up to the once newbiees, Bikee Chick you be on that nightster in no time.

Yeah the 6's and 9's of that era look very similar (same frame etc., just some slight bodywork differences like the 9's have vents in the sides of the tail etc., and of course one has a bigger engine than the other)

Hey Dudes and Dudess's
Just wanted to say it was groovy to hang out with you guys last night, took some photos of forwards and backwards shots, until my camera battery decided to hang itself, fuck why do they decide to do that when you are in the middle of some groovy camera shots, talking of which took some awesome shots of the sunset bouncing on fluffy clouds when I was up in the clouds, will make a thread and do a breakdown on the trip back to the UK and post some photos......Far Queue (Owen) will post some of the photos I took on the wednesday night ride.

Are they just the same cards that go in digital cameras? Cause I have a 1gig one I could bring along if that would help? Or is it just one card for all the cameras? I have no idea how it all works!
Yep, a stock standard SD card. A 1 gig one should give you about 20-30 mins-ish ... so maybe switch it on as you leave Little river next week to capture the ride over the hill ... Hope the old batteries still last that long  Should be ok to get some nice shots tho!
Will be great if we get them all rolling, that would make 4 of us recording and if the others that have cameras (like you "Hey wait for me" (hint hint)) do the same we could get more angles.
Then there would just be the joyous task of editing them all together.

Peeteey, I'll take a camera onboard if there is one going, as long as you don't mind it getting bug splattered like the rest of the front of the bike does.
Great, I'll bring them all along, I could make it three cams if there are 2 people with (up to) 2gb SD cards going. Two can mount and one can be strapped to the side of someone's helmet with a giant rubber band which is actually tyre inner tube. :)
The helmet cam, if anyone wants it, should probably be worn by a slower rider as it offers a bit of wind resistance at speed so maybe it's not for you Mr. Hornet ;)
So Scott's got one card, we just need one more to make it a trio of cameras :D

Ohhh.......my profile pic that's now really small because of the stupid f&*%ing KB "upgrade". That's right you did! It's a good pic.
The ZX seemed very similar in power to an 03 GSX-R600, but sluggish and fat compared to an 09 R6. It's alot heavier than the newer 600's

2 months left on my learners then do the restricted. I can then get the restricted period down to 3 months if I do the advanced driving course, speaking of which, anyone have any ideas where to do this??
hey KP, just looked up site on web for my full - was thinking of doing the "defensive driving course" so i can go for my full early March (3 months from date of getting restricted license) - the AA on brougham street costs $190.00 to do the course which you can do once you've had your restricted for 3 months and it consists of :4x 2hr sessions, then a drive in a car to prove what you've learnt......... then it's $71 to sit Full licence........

Love the Ducati(I would love a 999:love:) but Im a trail/dirt bike girl from last century, love them!Had a XL500 till very pregnant with my 1st born.....awesome thumper! & kicked her into life no probs(tho no decompression lever) Was a very sad day when the new owner rode off on her, it was 16yrs till I had a bike again......:weep:
My Sam(Casualty)is trying to decide wot to get after the CBR250R goes......he is 6ft3in & still growing, all the 600cc road bikes hes tried are too cramped for him....he loves the DR.....reckon he would love an XR,could do offroad/adventure rides & have a huge amount of fun on the seal...:woohoo:
And of course his mum could relive her long lost youth & ride it whenever she wanted.....

A 6'5" weasel.;) Started out three years ago with an XT600. Fitted bar-risers, but it turns out I am still growing, also, but not in the good way. The TDM was acquired to improve the power-to-weight ratio.
Bar-risers fitted to the TDM, along with wider Renthals.
Comfortable all day for the more generously sized gentleman.

It's my war injuries rather than my age that I'm sensitive about. My missing kickstarter is something I may never emotionally recover from.
Your offer of a prosthetic kickstarter is a very generous one and I will take you up on it when you have some spare time. It could look very authentic on the as yet unbought Guzzi.

No worries, in a few weeks the wifey will be back along with all my precious cards! It's her I'm waiting for to return, honest it is! :)

Ok BC tell all to Uncle GP.
Are you hurt apart from your pride???
Is your bike damaged???
I hope we will be seeing you next WNR.
Please remember EVERYONE falls off occasionally. NOBODY gets it right all the time!!!!
If you are without your bike, or would rather not ride yourself, next WNR, please come along anyway because we have a number of riders who could take you as pillion.

I wouldn't worry to much. I did a similar thing coming out of woodstock. I was behind the other half and the road had a bit a rise, i went to put my feet down and there was no road (camber of road) and over we went. 2 nice men helped me pick it up. Wasn't hurt nor was the bike so all good. Of cause Brent didn't see it happen cause he had already taken off, he had to come back and look for me when he realised I wasn't behind him. By the time he got back I had already been helped by the others.

Lyttleton time the bike was stationary & I managed to drop her!
Dropped the DR at a set of lights in Manchester St!:oi-grr:
Dropped the FXR in the pits on both sides at Ruapuna & I hadnt even started the bike & got out on the track!
These incidents were all after I was unconcious for 10mins when I crashed racing at Levels. In hindsight I was still recovering from the head injury & had balance issues!!

I've just got back from the ride now.
As some of you, the ones who went on the ride, will already now, tonight I had a small low side on Dyer's pass briefly after overtaking Hey Wait For Me.
After overtaking on a straight, and what I consider to be safe piece of road I then lost control midway through a slow right hander and the RGV slid into a bank.
Apart from being very dirty and some pretty serious scuffing to the right side the bike is fine.
I'm sorry to the people on the ride for causing this to happen on what should have been a regular WNR.
Although I think I was fully capable of taking that particular corner at that particular speed in these particular conditions, I admit that I could easily have made some better choices that could have prevented it all together. I don't consider myself a road racer or even a quick rider, or one who pushes my own limits.
If ever I overtake you I don't mean anything by it, and I don't consider myself a better rider than you or a faster rider than you.
I think I could have made some better decisions on this ride, and I'm very glad that the decisions I did make didn't affect anyone else.
I'm sorry team.

To hell with the bike are you OK?

It was a small but robust team tonight and a bit of a learning curve with the conditions. Having said that, still enjoyed the ride , thanks for the company.. Hope everyone made it back ok and hope the weather is a little more inviting next week.

Don't worry McWild, as long as you are ok. We all make mistakes and thankfully you walked away from this.
As Gloplg said 7 of us went on the ride and unfortunately McWild had his off, so 6 of us continued to the pub. Had a quick drink and with the weather being what it was, we headed home! Again, thank you guys for looking out for me and a big thumbs up to Leadon who TEC, hopefully I didn't hold you up that much

Any ideas the best way to dry off my boots, they are soaking wet??

I second that. Took the bike into work but decided that the run home would me get wet enough :(
Bring on next week!
Yeah Was still planning on coming till I woke up from having a nap at 530pm and heard the rain. Decided recovering from a head cold and cold rainy ride not the best mix.
Sorry to hear about your "off" Mcwild. smooth and slow is my policy in the rain , plus I don't follow other riders when I can avoid it, and ride like svboys nanna. Bikes are replaceable , long as your in one piece is the main thing.
Reshedule to next week sounds good, ......may have a few practise runs in between times thru..;)

Hey kids, just browsing round Trademe (avoiding going to bed! 5.45 am) Found a couple of really cheap cams.
They're both ones I have already and used quite alot on my bikes. Quality is fine for youtube, not outstanding by any stretch of the imagination but quite adequate for recording a ride.
The Sanyo Xacti C1:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=271884101
The Sanyo Xacti C4:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=271879713
They're both on $1 currently!
Let me know if you're going to bid on these 'cause if you're not, I think I will so I can get a quick and cheap way of getting more camera angles.
If you do want one/them then go for it, with the right tripod/mounting setup you can have alot of fun with these.
I strapped both of these to my helmet at various points.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcJqEFjywMo
Hung them upsidedown next to the engine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxBbqzzuHTo
or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrcDueufvMc
Strapped them to the handlebars:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL05RQheUjo
In action:
http://www.youtube.com/user/peeteey#p/u/36/FcBPI6wWttQ
This video is a bit shakey as my front fork seals are too tight so its more bumpy than it need be. I ran the video thru a bit of stabilisation software which helped but makes it a bit blurry from time to time but you get the idea anyhoo.
So, these are currently going cheap and are a quick and easy way to get into videoing your rides.
If no one wants them, I might get them cause the price is right. If you want them then you get them, just let me know one of you is bidding on them so we don't end up in a bidding war with each other which would be silly.
I still have both these cams plus another, the next up in the family, the C5.
Like I say, you want 'em, grab 'em, especially at this price!
p.s. I'd recommend the C4 over the C1 purely 'cause you can power it from the adapter and operate it at the same time. The C1 needs a little adapter to do that.
I have the C4 powered from the bikes battery so it'll never run out, well, until my bikes battery dies which is pretty much a weekly occurrence at the mo ... :bash:

Yea, these are pretty sweet. I was very dubious of the first few models of these as the picture was funny with movement. It looked like half the screen moved just before the other half followed suit giving the impression you were watching a movie that was being projected onto a sheet flapping in the wind!
They seem to have got that mostly sorted with these newer ones and HD is HD!
For just a little more you can get the Contour HD. Also nice.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Video-cameras/Video-cameras/auction-271990993.htm
The only drawback with both is that they have very small lenses so you need lots of light for them to get the best picture possible. They're unusable in the dark or even dim light. But for the price and convenience, that's not a biggie.
These are about 1/3rd the price of a new POV 1.5 but second hand the POV is not so bad considering.

Then again, a grand is a grand. That's the setup used by alot of major Vloggers. Svengalie had one, Danmoto73 and a bunch of others.
Quite nice with great battery life (8hrs?) and a remote thing for when something interesting happens, you press a little button and it marks it in the video so when you get home you don't have to search thru 8 hrs of footage to find the good stuff, it's all labeled for you!

Yep, always got a kit under the seat. Used one once in England, great insurance. When I got the puncture in England was when I had left the kit at home, called the folks up and got them to bring it out to me. One of those things, if you have always got it, you'll probably never need it.

Yep i carry a can or Tire Weld under my seat. Its instant, clean, easy and (if you follow the directions) almost idiot proof. under 1 minute and you can be back on the road. I have used 3 can sucessfully in the last 25 years so its a pretty cheap get ya home for about $25 a can.

Yep, it's one of the items I carry just as common sense ("Filling the car" as others on here have put it, but at least hopefully my "car" won't be being towed home if I can help it!) Got one of the plug-then CO2 kits from Pitlane in town... Do recommend the plug vs the Pando; had a Pando, was useless time I did need it, and also, it doesn't seal the outer layers of the tyre, eg if you do keep the tyre on and get it wet, you might end up with water between the layers/plies/whatever they call them now and have some very funny handling while it delaminates! :shit: (Yes I have had one do this, but not from a "classic" puncture - ran over a 4x2" on the bottom of the Nauranga Gorge - 100kmh at peak hour, no avoiding it. Thought I was OK until a rhythmic vibration at the front within a km or so... got into work, egg-sized lump approx 3/4" high on front tyre. Amazing what 36psi can do when it's somewhere it wasn't designed for!)
Guess it depends on how much space you've got under your seat? :innocent:

I've been scanning tard me for a cheapy camera. I made a mount to use the tripod connector on a standard camera. Got an old 1.3mp one but it seems to have a low frame rate. What FPS is needed to get a good vid? I see some are 50 but most are 30 or less

Yea, 25/30 is standard, 25 is PAL 30 is NTSC. Maybe its the other way around, but I think that's right. Anyhoo, if you can get one that does 60 that would be cool! I think it would make things alot smother. Mine are all 30fps and its fine but when you hit a bump, the sudden movement makes them blur but with 60fps that would, I'd imagine, be minimised.
Plus, with 60 you can slow down things to half speed and it will look delicious and smooth!
Would like to see how you're going to mount it!
Anyone thats keen to talk cameras feel free to PM me and I'll send you me ph. number as there are so many options and ways of doing things. I've been doing soooo much research it's coming out me ears!

The real trick with a can (you need the big can for bike tires) of tire weld, note i do not use the tire "pando" brand only the genuine tire weld, is to heat the can on your header pipes for about 2 minutes before you shake the can properly. It definitly works better on tubeless tires. Dont speed once its in there. Get a proper repair done asap. Self fitted plugs, tire weld and all those other temporary repairs are just that, temporary, designed to get you home or to the nearest garage.

Yo all
Well I have had the opposite experience with tire pandos. All 3 I have used have been a waste of time.
I carry; tire irons, bike pump, truck tube puncher repair kit (from TWL), BMW temporary tubeless repair kit, valve tool and a few extra CO2 bombs.
Yeah I haven't had a great run with them , may have been the size of the puncture thru... . Just got the co2 bombs and temp inserts, never used them yet, as last half dozen or so have just been slow leaks.

I'll have a yarn with you about it tomorrow. Catch you then. Also looking forward to seeing this Speed Triple beastie

Looked forward to a last ride to Duvauchelle on the Triple, suprised it sold so fast. With a bit of luck leadon will have another TDM for company once he is back from the NI. Picking up from Auckland so trust will be better for distance than the Triple. Looks like a brilliant evening for a ride, enjoy.

It's just a relativity thing... relative to the CBR, the RGV is a pocket rocket, but relative to the HD, the CBR is a pocket rocket. I'm not sure what you'd have to compare the HD to consider it a pocket rocket... maybe a Boss Hog?

Yeah, just got off the pace and thought I'd not push it; dry contacts don't help (like looking thru glad wrap) and I really had to admit I'm still knackered from the ride back from Blenheim (inland via Muchison etc, too damn hot) on Monday... was thinking of turning round at Little River anyway, but I guess I'd already done my Km/sauna session limits for the week, just sadly not on the WNR! Glad to hear it was a good one, tho.

I wouldn't worry Gloplg, I was so focused on getting the seat out of my ass when I got to Duvachelle that I didn't really pay attention to who was behind me. So I've now done Duvachelle, my cherry is popped! Besides you buggered off home last week!
Peetey, thank you for your patience on the way home, greatly appreciated, your lights were a huge help! Hope the video footage turns out alright, will bring a couple of DVD's for the footage.
So not only did I manage to go over to Duvachelle, I done the riding downhill with grit and videoing it (sorry FireLiv, if I managed to get your ass in the shot) then on the way back, heading back through the grit then it got dark pretty quick so managed to get home in one piece despite the winds. Peetey, you have the patience of a saint. All I can say now is that I'll sleep like a baby tonight!

Great ride last night. Only had one real arse puckering moment coming into town on the way home.
Over took a car in an 80k zone doing 110 (yea yea I know), and nearly crapped myself when I rode past the cop car on the side of the road. Thought I'm fucked now. Thankfully there wasn't a police man inside it at the time.
Also I think I passed the rider formally known as CBR250Tom crawling along on the way home, sorry if I caused you any concern. I didn't mean to pass you going into a corner like that. I thought there was more road before the corner. It wasn't until I was just past you that I flicked my high beam on and saw the corner properly.

Thanks for trusting me with it! Although I imagine the footage will be very interesting.... I thought that you would have peeled off there, so thank you for babysitting me, hope you didn't mind the slow speeds. First time doing that run at night with me at the front. Amazing how the road looks completely different at night and the fact that I was tired didn't help, I certainly didn't appreciate the concentration needed for that ride. I was so glad to get home. Head hit the pillow and I had a great nights sleep!
