What a wonderfull ride tonight, it was so much fun following you guys up SH1.
I just love straights, and not just roads either.
All those young bodies clinging to their seats
Oh the view as TEC on my Panther was so erotic

I think a panther is the male equivalent of a cougar:whistle:
Great ride last night I must say the H-D XR1200 sounded awesome, close second was the VTR thou, I had a V-Twin symphony as I was leaving Amberley. Bliss.:headbang:

Good ride tonight though I've been quite busy lately and wasn't really ready to organise or lead. Sorry I lead some astray
Just say so Phoenix.... there are others who will lead......:banana:

Bugger about your bike! I know the feeling of a break down, thankfully it wasn't serious! Hope you get back on the road soon! Nice to meet you!
Depending on where the ride is to, I might adventure out and bring the bike along to.
 I think you should just come out with us! I'll stick with you!!
Hey Roger, did you join us last night for the WNR??
Dr Death

A good night out last night, even if I did have to stop for gas after the plan changed from oxford to greta, haven't been through that way on a bike before. Interesting (?) chat with the owner of jap m/c dismantlers outside, & met a couple more new faces.
I'll probably be out with a spare seat next week if you need one, they'll have to put up with plodding along on the ol' 600 though.

There will be 4 girls next week Sam & I can take 2 but would be awesome if there were 2 takers for pillions??
3 off the girls are lovely young Canadians on holiday, staying with me atm:hug:

I agree that sometimes WNRers could pause before rushing into print about the attraciveness of a member of the opposite, however "the old fellow with all the hair" may choose to take exception with roger.
I think you are right about the appropriateness of the remarks. I also think you are right about this being an emotional day.:2thumbsup

Sounds like a few votes for Aka... so i will be going that way...
Ummm who said the bit from Dev to aka was not that interesting? (wo)man... thats one of the best bits, open and flowing, good vision thru the corners as well. It may be a little open for the smaller bikes but it is awsome on the bigger ones... even 2 up its only another 10 mins on the bike each way.

Those learners etc and those who don't want to tackle the hill (like the silly girl with the busted foot) .... How bout we stop at Little river....then we can all ride the same way for the Christmas ride. I know I know I shouldn't even be riding and if I get a cast on Monday I'll be out anyway but it's just a thought...

Thats a good compramise i think.... so "I VOTE FOR THAT". Ride to Lil River, stop for those that want a coffee and cake, and carry on to Aka for those that would like to go further. Maybe a NO STOP uturn at Aka to go back to Lil River to meet up with the "coffee crowd" for the return back to town? It would mean a 40 - 60 min wait for us to return from AKA but thats about the normal "coffee club" stop anyway....

Wasn't meant to sound boring..... just taking into account that the groups are getting large and there are some learners amongst the group who can't/won't go as far as Akaroa.
I won't risk doing the hills until my foot has a chance to heal a bit better.

Akaroa sounds like fun, but we will have to have a shorter stop as well. Some people just aren't keen to go that far. I guess Little River could be a go, and not so bad if you take Dyers & Gebbies to get there.

Yay my bike is sorted and will be fixed by tomorrow! :) I have a brand spanking new tank on it. There was a problem with the fuel tap under the tank. When the mounts for the hose are tightened it puts a bit of a stress crack in the tank, they had tried to sort it but a new tank was in order which is covered by warranty. It basically caused a vacuum so the fuel pump couldn't suck any fuel. When i looked on the side of the road i could see fuel in the lines and in the filter but without pulling the fairing off i couldn't tell that the fuel wasn't moving, so its sorted now :) Thanks for the offers too :)

Must be something about that shop, I did exactly the same thing there a while back, bent clutch lever and broken indicator and very red face at providing amusement to the staff outside having a smoke.
Merry Xmas everybody & safe travels on your holidays.
Only thing worse is a 340kg motorcycle on your leg.
I was speeding, just a bit on the way home.

Thanks, it's great to introduce some body new to riding. I did however feel a bit old, fat and grey at the time.
I really enjoyed the ride last night, one of the most enjoyable rides I have done in ages. It was really great to see soo many riders out so close the Christmas. Crowe wants to go to Riverton next week for a few days so I might not be around wed but if I am in town I will be be there for the last WNR of 09.

Its happened before and it will happen again, but I guess ya have to learn some how be it the hard way or easier.

Duh, I tell ya a mighty 240+kg bike laying on ya leg sucks. I for some stupid reason thought I had put the side stand down. It later appeared after the bike reached it's "you aint gunna stop me" moment, that I had not. No damage, apart from breaking the end off the clutch lever, the consolation of those pazzo levers is that the breaking point on them works. whew!!! lol.
Well your just lucky your not in a moon boot!!!!!! That's almost exactly how my foot got broke!!! :eek5::eek5: Lucky Lucky :sweatdrop:sweatdrop

Rest assured the last time I saw one of those new riders they were much more confident and smoother, they had the basic idea of the apex, had slowed down a lot in their rush to get everything done and were riding so much smoother.

Ah D one day I am going to check your genetics to see if there is some relationship to bloody Katman in there. Yeap you are right there are so many ways to achieve the end result we all want and that is a live rider, not a bent or broken cager, I have said it before and I will say it again I believe you could offer so much knowledge to new riders, what I show a guy that works for me and what you might show them could be two completely different ways to achieve the end result, one method might suit a rider better than the other but they will never know th options available to them.
It often harder to put into words how we do what we do than it is to just get out and do it.
Now if we could convince some of the Mainland guys or any other such programme to come along it could be a win-win as the new guys might know where to go to get the tuition and the educators might get students.

I have said it before and I will say it again I believe you could offer so much knowledge to new riders,
yeah and I often do, but one on one other wise they can get confused with what others say.
I am more than happy to do so on a WNR (providing I can get out) but as I hassle others about what they say to newer riders I cant really put my 2c worth in as it makes me out to be a know it all... hehe, I kinda over the years have mixed a bit racing lines into road riding (two toataly different styles really) and as I always say "works for me but may not for the next person" having said that safty and survivle is common, a no brainer and very very basic.
what I show a guy that works for me and what you might show them could be two completely different ways to achieve the end result, one method might suit a rider better than the other but they will never know th options available to them.
Interesting but I kinda agree. IMO there is really only one line to take on any one given corner, but there is many ways to position the body for that corner and this is were things differ cos riders come in all sizes and shapes, so some find differant positions beter suited to them, however for what I sugest is suited to almost all (bike style changes things to)
It often harder to put into words how we do what we do than it is to just get out and do it.defnitley
Now if we could convince some of the Mainland guys or any other such programme to come along it could be a win-win as the new guys might know where to go to get the tuition and the educators might get students.Well Lil'Ms Mr is Mainlands riding guy, and does get out for rides every so often, but I dont know if he is to keen to help out side of work, he preferes to ride for himself. Mainland have a gig comming up, so anything extra would be a confliction... Ill start a thread on the up comming rider training. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1129585906#post1129585906

Being a learner is all about learning. I'm lucky in the respect that I knew all of you before I started learning so I picked up alot about your riding styles, rules of biking and getting to know you all. Other learners have to learn that and by coming along on the Wed night rides they do learn where they should be and how to ride within a large group. They have to find their place in the pack, I'm lucky that I already knew where I would be (at the back)!!
For me, most people have seen me riding and are happy to give me advice about what I do and when I do it, thankfully I take it as such, I try it out and if it doesn't suit, I'll try something else.
I can only comment for me, but I have to say that the level of support I have had from everyone on the Wed night rides has been awesome, I know my riding ability and I do try not to hold everyone else up, but thankfully they do understand that the "L" plate is just that, I'm learning so if they do get stuck behind me, they can overtake if it's safe to do so and they don't complain about it! I understand that the level of riding varies biker to biker so there is a wealth of knowledge to be had. It is easy for the more competent riders to become complacent about learners, but just remember you were a learner once and had to learn everything we have too! Rather than bitch and moan about the riding style of learners talk to them and find out where they are in their learning and help teach them about riding safely amongst the group. Riding in a group like ours is awesome as the people are very helpful and friendly!!!!
In saying that I'm confident enough to ask for help if I need it but there could be other people that wouldn't and these are the people that need the help not just someone saying that they should know how to fit in and know how to ride. They may not know the dynamics of the group but are too afraid to ask!! Cause, come on, some of you are scary!!!

If you do the sumit road, just remember that it is summer, holiday time,
and you will come across joggers cyclists, mountain bikers, tourists in campers, boy racers all out to enjoy the same road.
So expect more than just loose shingle on the blind corners.
Yes a great ride in the summer, but dont expect to be safe at any speed over say 80kph, so many possibilities of carnage

firstly i dont use TTS,im a ROCK OIL SYNTHESIS guy,have been for 25 years:rolleyes:
i use about 10ml per litre .sometimes a little more until i get the aroma i am looking for.just pour into teh oil tank.make sure it is oil not vanilla essence.

When I was up there the other day there was quite a bit of loose gravel lying around between gebbies pass and kennedy's bush, as well as the newly sealed bit from SOK to marleys hill.
And as he said look out for cyclists, Le Race is not far away so there are heaps of roadies out training.

As i sit here surfing the web looking at what my next bike will be, I think to myself "What the hell will my next bike be??!!" I mean how on earth do you choose?? When buying a 250 you really are quite limited when you decide on style, performance, and new or used and finally you end up with a small list and you then take some for a ride and make your choice, relatively simple. Things seem to be a lot harder when you go from that to deciding on anything from a 250cc up to a 2300cc bike and there are hundreds of bikes to choose from new, let alone taking used bike's into consideration. I seem to see something and think "Thats the bike! yup i'll get one of those" until I then see something else and think "Hmmm but hey thats bloody nice too!" of course having a garage full of bikes would just lovely but reality unfortunately slaps thy self in the face and says "WHAP! just pick one dick!". How do you choose just one meat from a smorgasboard especially when out of the corner of your eye you spot the pudding?!

For a while i thought i'd buy a SS750 but then i started looking at the 1000cc mark and then the like's of a Moto guzzi Breva,or Moto Marini Corsaro or a Aprilia Tuono tickle my fancy too. At the moment i'm very interested in a Aprilia Shiver. I have only sat on one at this stage. Bloody nice bike especially with ABS! A tad bit to high for me when i'm trying to touch the ground but in riding position very very comfortable!! Style, grunt, racing technology and quality. ooh nice!

I had a Yamaha XJ 400 Diversion road bike for a couple of years but then when it came time for an upgrade, was spoilt for choice on what bike I wanted. I always liked Ducatis but did not think I could afford one until I spotted this minter Ducati ST2 for sale at R1madness bike shop (Just Motorcycles). It really comes down to what you can afford, how you can handle the extra weight and horsepower. Good luck on your choice of bike in the future and another thing just google on the bike reviews on any particular bike, as you will get an idea on how they perform by various owners and test riders. Cheers Iggy

You try the ones that make your top 5, if you can decide on a top 5.

A tad bit to high for me when i'm trying to touch the ground but in riding position very very comfortable!! Style, grunt, racing technology and quality. ooh nice!
hate to piss on ya parade... but ya on ye 1st bike right? best you wait 27yrs and 300,000 k before ya start dreaming, in the mean time stick with the 250, then 400, 600/750, 1000... this over time, then you can be like me on a MM Corsaro :devil2::devil2::devil2:

Meanwhile back on track ...
so through Hallswell, black tulip, up gebbies to the sumit and then turn left on to the sumit road?
and onto the sumner turn off.I was thinking - up and over Dyers Pass, past Sign of Kiwi to Gov Bay, Wheat Sheaf, Gebbies Pass, Summit Rd, straight ahead past Sign of Kiwi again, follow Summit Rd, down Evans Pass to Sumner = minimum distance to the twisties from BK carpark and maximum amount of twisties.

How do you choose just one meat from a smorgasboard especially when out of the corner of your eye you spot the pudding?!
as someone who just upgraded to a 600. i would suggest going japanese, they are great bikes and are relatively cheap. and as much as i hate to admit it dangerous is right, dont go straight to a huge powerful bike. going from a 250 with 30hp to a bike with over 150-180 hp is a huge step up. get a second had 600/750 and enjoy the ride. after you have more experience riding then get your dream bike.

Just buy it for you...
Don't buy something for anyone else.
If it takes your fancy and you can afford it just go for it. They're all just bikes.
IMO the whole "don't buy a 1000cc you'll kill yourself" talk is absolute bullshit. If you have the mindset you already have everything you need.

raises an interesting point there
i have seen a few "questionable"moves on the Wed Nite Rides but never dreamed of waving any big sticks or making any kind of fuss, preferring to get away from the riders concerned and letting them have their crash in private.
If there is a system in place re : policing and upholding of any standards,i would like to know who administers them, just for future reference.
as you were.....

Well thanks for all the advice people, will take all of it into consideration when i make the move to the next bike :) Although i'm only riding a 250 at the moment i have actually been riding since i was 14, but i never got around to getting my full licence and have only owned small bikes and i haven't had a bike for the last 12 years. I thought that while i get my confidence back i'll start off again with a 250. For my height and weight I probably wouldn't get anything bigger than a 650/750 and something in a small frame too. I'd also love to give bucket racing ago one day too, it looks like a right royal bag of fun to me! I'm enjoying riding with the experienced riders on wednesday rides, following their lines and seeing how they ride. Its a great way to learn what to do and... ahem... in some cases what not to do...

I heard that.:Playnice:
After 18 odd years with five bikes with the basically the same motor.
I needed a change, so had to kiss a few frog's until I got a Swan.(Duck does not sound right here).
Yes I really do like this bike more than the others.
But having done 9000 K's on the Duck to date.(not bad in 3 months one week)
I may have to trade again.
Or buy another bike to share the K's with.:2thumbsup
We just did 800K's ride yesterday and was SDU's longest ride.
And a big thanks to miSTer and R1maddness.:2thumbsup
My advise to a new bike is.
Make a list of what you like and than talk to people that know about them. (older guys or gal's that have been riding for more than a few years)
Listen and listen, to what could be good and bad for you.
Test ride and think is this bike to much for ME at the moment.
Then talk and listen and think with your head and not your ego or dick.

Afterall, we're all human. We all like a thrill, but we all have our own boundaries :girlfight:

You missed my point... at your age and HWFM, pay attention to what the elders say, we been around and seen it all ya know... like I posted ride safe learn slow go up in CC's and make it to my age then doing a wheelie like I posted is no more unsafe that riding in a straight line.
IMO its les safe for a greenie (but learning well) like you to be flunting ya self on what is one of the fastest bikes on the road/hills than it is for a old cock like me doing a wheelie in a empty road with no one watching. (you do relise the young think cos you handle a R6 so can they)

The roads are free for anyone to ride, and dicks wont last long and thats with out even having to threten them like you just did me. You are young and green man... but a hell of a good prick aswell.
So just for you dave... when you grow up (takes 100,000s of kms and decades) you to will be able to do this... and this

well said I'm with you on this one D. As a learner absolutlely green to bikes, I want to be told straight up. I went riding with some WNR's on Sunday and one told me my lines were shit (Thanks Bren). I have been on WNR since Augast and usually ride in the middle somewhere yet no one has pointed this out before and to be fair I have never asked. My point is if I am seen doing something wrong or making bad choices I want some of the experienced riders to tell me and pull know punches. I would sooner have it this way than lose my head on a right hander!
I also got you point D. re when you put the k's under belt you will be able to ride like this...assuming you can be patient and hold to the wider learning curve instread of cutting corners. I am only a learner on a motorbike it doesn't make me some idiot that thinks if he see's a wheely I am going to rush out and try it on my self.

Not everyone has the confidence to do this and besides someone you barely know saying to you that your riding is crap, you wouldn't take it very well! Ok, I know I wouldn't!! That person may not know what you are like, what your attitude is to riding etc but thats the great thing about the Wed night rides is that you can ride your ride and eventually someone will tell you to pull your head in but you will take it in your stride.
I also got you point D. re when you put the k's under belt you will be able to ride like this...assuming you can be patient and hold to the wider learning curve instread of cutting corners.
Even putting the km's under your belt won't automatically make you a better rider. I've put about 4000km on my bike in the last 2.5 months but I don't believe that makes me a better rider than anyone else who has done any more or less. In my opinion it's about your attitude and your willingness to take on board what people are saying that will make your riding better and of course safer!

very correct... its taken me 27 years and I still learn every time I ride, the day you stop learning is the day ya end up in a box.
In your case KP 4000k in 2.5 months is impresive, BUT what that can do is have you repeating bad habbits... ya need the break and time inbetween the kilometers.

Hey D, Do what I did and take them aside and ask them if they would like me to see how they are doing!!!!
On Sunday four of us rode and seeing as there were two "experienced" (I'll never be experienced enough") riders and two learners I took it upon myself to ask them if they wanted any advice.
I had let the cobwebs fly by then and was more than happy to follow and watch.
KP has improved immensely and she will go far. At this point I didn't see any "bad habits" She keeps her head on the "right" side of the middle white line and doesn't stray too far. Time and more riding and watching will benefit her...
Tupelo had never been asked and like he said hadn't thought to ask. Cruiser or no cruiser ya still need to understand the lines.
So I simply asked him to follow my lines and exaggerated them so he could get an idea about what is meant by "apex" and not hanging your head over the white line..
did the same last week with GEForce.
Shrek will tell you i was a shocker when I first got onto the XJR last year. wonder I never lost my head they way i was going...
So you guys who are quick to slag off and give these young ones and new ones shit about their riding and I don't mean only Mr D.
Pull your heads in, take some time and ask them if they want help instead of intimidating them with your experience and so called prowess!!!!

Only read the last two posts. At work and sleepy after feed of BK and about to hit more exciting paperwork...
To anyone who thinks or feels that my riding is shit, have stupid repetitive errors...you'd be right. I ( like many others I'm sure) will welcome comments and hints. I have had a lot of help from a number of riders and I have tried to correct my "style".
I consider myself to be a bit of a shit rider and that's why I'm happy to stay near the back and ride my own pace. I know the previous posts (that I haven't read) do not pertain to me, but any similar thoughts can be told to my face, help me get better. Posts and talking behind mine or anyone elses back helps no one and just tears down the cool community that we have.
Now lets all stop :girlfight:, have a  and move on eh?

After reading all this, I don't think I will bother coming along on a Wednesday night ride for a very long time at least until I am a so called "experienced rider". which IMO will be a very long way off. I think there are some great teachers amongst the riders that go on the Wednesday night ride that I would love to learn off. RQ been one of them. I am always open to productive criticism. So if any one wants to take me under their wing I am all for it but it wont be on a Wednesday night.
