Every Wednesday - Meet at Burger King carpark on Moorhouse Ave at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm departure.

Right, I know a few of us have been looking forward to this. The first official ride will be Weds 30th of September. This is the first Weds after daylight savings kicks in. See you all there!!

These rides are designed to be a social ride and an opportunity for newer riders to gain experience from the not so new riders. The destination will generally be a pub for a drink and a chat.

I must stress that this is not a race from point A to point B. If you want to "see how fast you can go" then please don't come along.

Ideally we will decide on a route on the thread beforehand and we will have a briefing at the carpark before we leave when we will explain the route and re-group points.

1. Rider Responsibility
It is the responsibility of each and every rider to ride safely and within their abilities. If any rider acts in a dangerous manner then they will be asked to leave. Remember, you not only put yourself at danger but also the other riders and the general public. If you do not understand this then do not come.

2. Rider Assistance
At the carpark we’ll ask that riders who would like some one on one help will be asked to put their hands up and we’ll ask some of the more experienced riders to provide that help. Please don’t be shy. This is an excellent opportunity.

3. Leader
The cruisy group will have a lead rider appointed each week. Obviously it will be someone with reasonable skill so as to not piss everyone off. The leader will stop at the pre-determined regroup points and wait for the entire group to arrive before departing.

If you wish to do your own thing then feel free, but please leave the BK carpark earlier, before the rest of the group!! We'll see you at the pub (and expect some beers waiting for us). There's nothing worse than someone trying to be Rossi and carving up the slower riders to get to the front. That's when accidents happen. Leave first.

4. Tail End Charlie
A TEC will also be determined as a safety measure.

For a link to descriptions of some of the regular routes we take go here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1823496&postcount=521) and here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1834883&postcount=642).

Please keep this thread on topic
Last years thread is here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=81075)

Disclaimer: Neither myself, nor any other participant is responsible for another rider's actions. Each rider is responsible for their own riding.

Last evening season I felt we had a wee rift between the "fast" crew and the "social" riders. The fast crew usually left first, then the social group. Is that seen as the way things will go this time. Makes sense to me, as riders can pick their pace/group/ skill level[?] accordingly. As long as it is not seen as an us/them thing, just different riders wanting different things from the WNR.

there's a ride that goes out to Duvachelle every Wednesday, it departs at 6:15.

sometimes the cruisy Wednesday night ride also goes to Duvachelle.

so far as I can tell there is no more a rift between the two rides as there is a rift between two different sunday rides.

Just like last year I imagine there will be a group of riders who won't want to deal with the leaders and TEC's and slower riders and all that. That's ok. There's nothing wrong with that, just leave earlier like I said here:

Not everyone wants the same thing from these rides. That's natural and that's why the "rift" formed last year

No rift. I know that these riders prefer to go to Duvouchelle (one day I will learn to spell it) but they could do the same route just leave earlier (6.15?) Otherwise we will always see them when the cruizys go to duvouchelles. :scooter:

I went for a ride to Diamond Harbour today, purely in the interests of inspecting the roads - yeah right.

City side of Dyers Pass - brilliant, clear, a bikers dream (apart from the traffic and cyclists)
Other side of Dyers Pass - still quite gritty, particularly on the slow corners
Bottom of Dyers through to Wheatsheaf - some patches of grit, but pretty good
Diamond Harbour road - good, very good
Around the bays to Lyttleton - one patch of roadworks? Not really sure what it was, but there was a splippy slide sign a couple of metres before it, so not enough time to slow down and I hit it with reasonable speed and had an exciting 2 wheel drift
Evans Pass - clear

Dave-
6th September 2009, 21:10
anyone hit up gebbies?

old taitap - gebbies - diamond harbour could be a goer....if the pub is still there...

McWild
6th September 2009, 21:20
Gebbies hasn't had any grit for the last couple of months, can't see why that would have changed.
Old Tai Tapu is reliable as ever, just gotta watch out for that bit near the horse place as usual.

Got a $230 speeding ticket today lol. Who says I'm not wild and outgoing.

Speeding is bad kids, mmkay?

Flip
6th September 2009, 21:27
They only gritted the harbor side of Dyers pass on Saturday morning cause of the frost, it was swept clear last week I think a few psycholists fell off.

Must try and get out with you guys a few times this summer. Mrs Oakie and I have sold our Hondas and bought a Bandit to share. We're doing a tour up the West Coast in November so a bit of Wednesday night practising is probably a good idea.

Dave-
7th September 2009, 20:14
I have it on good authority that gebs is clear, bit of dampness on that head pin, but its a shit corner anyway.

and phoenix is right, that sign needs to be placed better, there is one back a bit further warning of road works but they're dotted all along there to the point where you slow down but dont see any road works, so by the 5th one you go "flag it", fortunately I was on the outlook for the sign so didnt even run into the grit.

R6 goes well :D

Did the Dyer's to Evan's part of summit road this afternoon and not a piece of grit to be found!

It was funtastic.

One thing to watch out for is rogue sheep. One section in particular was so incredibly awkward.

I was just riding at a nice and cruisy pace, admiring the road an all, and I spot a few bits of crap on the road.
"Aha!" thinks I. "I will avoid these with care".

So I keep riding, and I spot a few sheep on the side of the road. I of course do the manly thing to do, and I pull over and take a photo of my bike next to the sheep with my phone.
Because that lamb was oh my god so incredibly cute/delicious.

Anyway, once again I start off, and continue on.

Then I notice these small white patches among the tussock.
And holy shit.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES.

I had unknowingly ridden into sheep territory, and they look pissed.
Think skinny white ginga teenager (aka me) walking into Wanganui. Waving a banner supporting the patch ban. Dressed in pink.
Many of them are on the road, clearly attempting to ruse me into stopping for just a second. I narrowly miss a small lamb. I keep riding, hoping, PRAYING to get to a cattle stop.

As you can see, I made it. But it was close.
So just watch out for sheep on the Summit road, k?
They mean business.

Dave-
15th September 2009, 21:43

17th September 2009, 15:18
Yep.

A car pulled out of the Huxley-Colombo st Mobil, did not see me, and I dropped the Harley it doing an emergency swerve around it.

Did a bueaty skid and think I pushed the bike over sooo far I rode right onto the fenders that are on my bike. Ground right through the 1" tube. Landed on my ass and skidded into the car. The bike actually went in front of the car and skidded to a stop.

Minor damage to me and the scooter. The fenders and the highway pegs need replacing but seems like there is no other damage. Can't even claim that I suffered any damage myself. Got a sore ass, my right hand is tender and I feel like I have fallen off a motor bike.

Because I could not get up after hitting the road, an ambo was called, the rozza turned up. The driver was mortified that he had caused the accident. The cops were good, told the other driver that he was being charged with 'careless'. The ambo were brillant checked me out and let me go.

The best thing is I didn't even miss out on any drinking time.

Diamond Harbour via Tai Tapu & Gebbies

A nice easy one for the first we ride. We know that all of these roads are clear from grit, so it should be a good ride. We'll regroup in Halswell on Halswell Rd, just after turning off Sparks Rd. We'll take Old Tai Tapu Rd to make it a little interesting (will get someone to stop on the corner so everyone can see where to turn). Regroup again at the carpark when when turn off onto Gebbies Pass. From there we'll head all the way to Godley House.

Anyone who wants to take a different route, or wants to get there with a bit of pace, then go for it, but leave early.

If there's any newer riders who'd like a more experienced rider to follow them (or vice versa) and give them some tips then come see me at th BK carpark and we'll find someone (I'll be the one in the red leather jacket yelling at you all)

See you next week!!!

...If there's any newer riders who'd like a more experienced rider to follow them...
I'm not so keen on that idea.
When I take a new rider under my wing I prefer to have them follow me, I ride quietly and keep an eye on them in my mirror so as I'm not pulling away in to the distance.
So if there's a nervous rider that thinks they would gain more confidant doing it that way round then that is an option.

Fingers crossed for nice weather.

Oh boy, I love me a good reverse cylinder... that is really nice!

I don't suppose it's derestricted though? I've read that the 3MAs especially are really difficult to fully derestrict because of the need for Sugo pipes and ignition, which are meant to be quite rare/expensive.
Then there's the reverse cylinder chambers, which although ridiculously cool would be pretty difficult to track down, I guess.
Next step should be repainting it in Malboro colours. You know you want to!

We just need Imdying to bring his Lucky Strike and it will be a stroker festival :wari:

cheers... did you see the white one i was riding for a while last year? Ya cant beat that sound!

I've done a bit of port work, carb, intake flow, derestircted the airbox and the header part of the exhaust, adjusted timing.

Apparently the mod to std exhaust pipes which is quite a large job can give you up to 8hp so thats my next step. I just wanted to get it going first.

Yeah... the sugo stuff is meant to be ok, but there are cheaper alternatives that give just as good results. after the exhausts are done i'll replace the ignition... when money allows! I'm looking for 60hp at the wheel, more than that is possible but i don't want to make it a time bomb, i'd like it to be my everyday bike in the summer and do a race or 2 on it every now and then.

I wont paint it, i really like the blue its quite different! i will hunt down some copies of yamaha 3ma race stickers though.

What's the exhaust work on the 3MAs? Just gutting them?
I know you can do it on the RGVs but it just gives a bit more top end.
I think with a bit of ignition work mine can make 60rw as it has ignition, pipes, carbs and air filter all aftermarket. Just need to find a reliable and cheapish dyno to give me a place to start. Do you know of any such dynos?

Haven't seen the other 3MA I'm afraid, wish I had though. That looks niiiice.
Although I prefer the 3MAs to the rest of the series, the nicest TZR I've laid eyes on was a turquoise 3XV turning onto the motorway on my commute. That was a hell of a nice bike, wish I had caught up with the owner for a chat! Probably be worth $$$$$ though, best I refrain from window shopping.
One of the guys at Hampton Honda has an original MC28 Repsol NSR, that thing is incredible. One of something like 1000 ever produced.

Well yeah can't wait to hear it in person.

Yip someone told me that a couple of days ago, I tested it out today and your right it works pretty well lol Apparently there is a type of anti fog stuff that if you put on the OUTSIDE of your visor, it creates a film which helps the rain slide off........gotta find me some of that.

Going by some of the posts of the hard core rain lovers I would say it will go ahead rain or shine. It is appx 40Kms to Diamond harbour - 30-40mins?? Then depending on the route back another 30. Plus talking time!

No, you have to shorten some parts and lengthen other parts, quite a big job.

for 2 strokes i think its called Dynoworx - ashburton. http://www.dynoworx.co.nz/

for 4 stroke stuff i use triple-r-superbike in chch http://www.triple-r-superbike.co.nz/ they have a very good dyno.

It will go ahead rain or shine. There will just be alot less turn up if it's raining. Should take less than an hour and a half to get to Diamond Harbour with all the stops etc.

Rolling thunder have kindly offered to wash it and put it back on the road so I can tag along. The parts are coming from Aust and they say the dust storms are delaying air freight shipments.

If I pick it up I have to get it back to them in a couple of days which will cause me problems as 'the boss' is in Wellington this week.

I concur with the night time thing! my first time in the dark on my new bandit, makes it a bit harder to look where you are going when you can't see past where the light shines! and bloody cars with lights on high beam doesn't help either.

Great ride and awesome to meet more of you folk. We took Dyers pass on the way home, that was breathtaking, looking over the lights of the city. Had to remind myself to watch the road! What a tourist!
Enjoyed hot chocolate and chocolate moouse fix at BK, where we got to check out Brens new baby, as he said. Very tidy looking bike Bren, well done and enjoy :)
Cheers all, see you next week!

Great turn out last night! Nice to see so many new faces and some of the old ones, you know who you are!!!

Anyways, as you know I was walking about taking pictures and managed to get most of you as you were leaving the car park. I haven't put them on here as there is over 60 photos, if you want a copy of yourself leaving the car park, drop me a PM with your email address and the bike you ride and I'll email you the photo, please bear in mind that it will be reduced as I'm still on dial-up. If you want a good copy, bring me a CD or a pen drive and I'll get it to you!

Hope you like the pictures!

I know a guy who works in tunnel control. They have always been able to work out your avg speed through tunnel from one end to the other. If you are speeding excessively they will pull you up and give you a ticket. I find it's just easier to stay around the 50-55kmph and then it doesn't matter what they do to catch speeders.

Well one user can only place 2 and there were about 10 so I am forced to assume there were other people involved.
Pretty sure I'm not narcissistic (enough) to tag it ten times anyway.

I guess placing arbitrary and ultimately pointless tags in a thread is not in fact such harmless fun after all!
Look, I'll even change my two to "tags are bad" and "ride with caution" in honour of the occasion. I can do nothing about "rape mcwild for lunch" and "love me mcwild!!!" though. Although they are awesome so I hope they stay.

To be fair I believe that you were going to other users houses and adding tags from their accounts..... so not quite the inoccent party. Just remember that people dont know about the relationships that people may have outside of this forum and that saying certain things might me taken the wrong way by other people.... just a thought.

And McWild if you wanted some man loving time with Phoenix you have to ask me first! :woohoo:

As far as I'm concerned that's a green light

As we discovered on previous rides it's too difficult to re-group at the sign of the kiwi, so we won't. We'll head all the way through to the carpark at the top of Evans Pass and regroup there. We'll then head down through Lyttleton and have a quick catch up at the bay just past the tunnel roundabout and then onto the Wheatsheaf. These guys are much more friendly to us than Godley House, so well be good to them. Just be careful in their gravel carpark. I've seen more than one bike go down there in my 2 short years in Chch
