HOT by the way.

remember how andrew said that smart assed remark to you in little river? "helen, next time you're going so slow that I have to over take you, can you please move to the left?"

well I gave him a head start leaving little river and caught him on the hill, when he got to Duvauchelle I said to him "hey andrew, next time you're going so slow that I have to over take you, can you please move to the left?"

I seem to remember another incident that someone used these words as an excuse for poor riding style, I am sure that was after he ended up in hospital, think he got a few charges from the police over that.

Anyhow will be back from Greymouth in time to do next weeks ride maybe.

If you need a leading bike to move over so as you can pass... then obviously its to dodgy to do so anyway, if the leading bike does not want to change their line then thats their call... of course that leading bike should always be awear of whats going on behind them at all times, curtacy is paramont.

As a group of us were heading home via Tai Tapu and Halswell we passed an ambulance heading in the opposite direction( towards Akaroa). I hope that everyone got home o.k last night and the ambulance was sent out for a member of the WNR group.

Great ride over there, except for my cock up, missing the turn off and heading to the Black Tulip corner.

Turned around at Little River and got home in one piece. Had a few hairy moments on Old Tai Tapu Road, was cornering wide. (concentration was lacking) Decided to take it slowly from then on :S

Thanks again for the great ride. Where are we off to next week?

p.s. Anyone spot all the craps on the road on the way back?

I hear you on the concentration, I was starting to lose focus alittle, I guess I was getting tired. Like you also got home in one piece!

Looking forward to next week!

Yeah, saw Pete at the Halswell Challenge and got a wave as I rumbled through. Transalper and the big-tank DR650, eh!? - World famous since ages ago!yeah, I should of made up some extravagant rural fuel delivery service charge. Well done on finding the fuel exchanger device (empty bottle).
I've also been known to pick up broken FXR150s (I think it was) off Dyers Pass in my van, but last one was several years ago now.:niceone:

Yep was a good ride alright, especially enjoyed having to catch my radar defector half way up the the hill on the way back when it decided to part company with the rest of the bike  and wondering why I forgot to fit my clear visor that morning - helps to see where you are going occasionally, and those darn fat suicidal lake flies didn't help there. Aside from all that it was great  Glad to hear that the Ambo was not for any of the KBers.

Managed to change the back brakes yesterday.... not a real biggy but doing it one handed was interesting.
I did use my 13year to help a wee bit...
So had to test the brakes, not entirely comfortable but it was still a blast.
Getting this plaster cast off next week wohoo :doctor:

Transalper

...The 2.5 hours one way ride ...
That estimate is screwed up.
My GPS routeing software estimates 98km and 1 hour 15 minutes.
I consider that much more accurate. Maybe add 15 minutes for group dynamic and new riders.
Anyone wanting to go a slightly shorter easier route could go straight up SHW1 (80km/1 hour) and meet the rest there.

phoenixgtr
27th October 2009, 14:49
It doesn't actually take that long (2 hours max) and we'd come home straight back down the highway, which takes about an hour. It's still a long one in terms of the rides we normally do, so fair enough.

I'm sure you have all heard about the biker who was killed on Sunday night on the Coast after the street racing.

I'm sure you all feel the same, when you hear about another biker who is killed it just rips my heart and makes me think - what if it were me??

His name is Matthew Edward Carpinter, 31 years old of Kaiapoi. Not sure if he is on KB or not, i'm sure someone on here will know.

My heart and condolonces go out to his partner Liz and family.

If anyone wants to read the news article you can click on this link:

ok, this guy has lost his life, his family will be in a lot of pain as any of us would be if it were our loved one. So lets not lead his death onto an ACC or bikers bash. There is a time an a place for that. I have started a thread which has the details for Matthews funeral on Thursday. Please read it if you are interested in coming along.

Wasn't going to try to catch up after helping Andrew with his broken clutch gizmo-clippy at Amberly ... Still got DRS (drowned rat syndrome) even with rain just starting at the city boundaries, and did they have the streetlights on by the time you guys got back in? Mucho fun riding on glassy streets in sleet/hail with nothing but headlight glare to try to pick out the lanes!

The final post
Hi guys and girls regarding the protest ride, so after tweeking and checking out some details, the start point will be @ the peg on Saturday 31st of october 10.00am then we will be heading down main north rd, papanui rd, victoria street, lichfield street and then into manchester street and ending up @ the biketoberfest and we will make our stand there as well, i have just one more hurdle and thats is trying to get the police to co-operate with us and helping with traffic control. when the day comes and we are ready to ride i will give you all final directions and answer any questions that people may have,

KiwiPhoenix

Also made it home in one piece. By heck that ride home was scary! Ok, for me it was. A few prayers were said on passing the big trucks! Also my feet were soaking, the fabric bit on my boots aren't waterproof, will have to get the scotch guard out and give them a spray!

HoT: I also saw a little coloured car (thankfully no flashing lights for me) was doing a reasonable speed at the end of the motorway heading into Belfast when he passed, must have realised that I was too busy concentrating to bother with me, thank you for that!

If you have old helmets hanging around you no longer want there may be a beneficial use for them, will get all the details in the next few days but I hear folks at the hospital are looking for helmets to use in training, apparently its the trauma unit so sounds like a good thing to me.

Kerry will find out the details and we will pass them on here.

Must have been character building, man it was hosing down on my home in the cage last nite, got soaked just getting out to open the gate. A loburn-ashley- oxford type ride would be good later on too. Think when the sw change change thru late afternoon in town Emlyn, few people would have been worried about the weather.

If you have old helmets hanging around you no longer want there may be a beneficial use for them, will get all the details in the next few days but I hear folks at the hospital are looking for helmets to use in training, apparently its the trauma unit so sounds like a good thing to me.

Kerry will find out the details and we will pass them on here.

few of us went to *ahem* check the road today...

it's clean until half way up the hill, then there's a patch or 2 of grit and some rubble.

the road is pretty technical so keep your speed low and you'll be fine.

on the way back there's a bit more grit, so even slower, but once you get back to diamond harbour it's all good.

what D said. you wont learn to ride it by looking at it in the garage.

protip: the grit and debris that we saw on the port levy road wasn't in the car tracks, so if you stick to the car tracks you'll be fine.

Yep just a little gravel in between tyre tracks, on about three corners in the downhill lane on the Diamond Harbour side of Port Levy Road.

Hardly enough to be worth a mention.

The only thing I'd say is that one of those corners is in shadow in the evening - that's really the only one which could potentially catch someone out, because it's kind of difficult to see.

Na not new, not even slightly worn.

With any group there is likely to be some one along who will take a risk and put themselves in peril. You find out who they are prety quickly when they make a couple of stuff ups, and then they usually dissapear.

And not to suggest a stereotype, but I do love travelling family and natal days.
I diligently spent my some of my yoof researching the phenomenon that is single-malts; proper diligent, that is, no half measures (as you could say), in the country of origin. Made me the man I am today. It's an affliction akin to fly-fishing and/or motorcycling - always something to learn.

But thanks to JMemonic :niceone: looking after the directionally challenged of myself, we soon caught up to the back of the pack by wheatcheaf.

Good to see/catchup with everyone again. Mrs Chung (May) enjoyed meeting everyone and enjoyed the ride, esp the ride back through Dyers looking down on a well lit Chch and being passed by gloplg at the same time. Hopefully she wont be too adverse to joining other wed nights rides.

The bike really needed that run. Ran smoother than silk by the time i rolled into our street and felt like it has an extra pep on the ride to work this morning. Thanks all. :scooter:

Yeah, nice ride - made it to the top of the Port Levy saddle & thought "Enough"... reminded me of the Paraparas (back roads up Wanganui way) when I first got my licence - nice twisties, but I'm probably more of the "pipe & lounge chair" brigade going through them than some of you guys!! (But did scare away some of the loose baa-baas for your other guys tho - that bought back the old maxim of "slow in, fast out"!). The gravel wasn't too bad, just some of the potholes were a bit eye-watering, and the Ohlins definitely needed some tightening up on some of the mid-speed ribbies...

Did amaze me the number of properties for sale out that way, too... ? Maybe they've had a hard winter out there!

Again we had a huge turnout with over 40 bikes. We'll hit the magic 50 one of these weeks.

I didn't enjoy the Port Levy road at all. I now remember why I've only been over there once before and haven't been back. If I was on a different bike it might be a different story but the "rigid ninja" don't do bumpy roads. It was like one of those mechanical bull rides.

Sadly there is a lot to be said for a trail bike with road tyres with the condition of NZ roads currently... was a lot of wondering last night if the old XL250RC (many years back now, and which had road tyres) would have done any better than the BMW - there again, both the bike & I could lose some many kilos to be in the same weight league!!

Good ride last night, was interesting going to port levy, got there saw that, dont think I will be in a hurry to go back (esp when the front steps out). Just got a few wee points that I want to make.....

1. If you want help/ someone to keep an eye on you just ask! We dont bite (Ok well I do when provoked) and there is nothing "unmanly" in asking for help if you feel you need it. KiwiPhoenix has improved so much since the first ride because she asks for help!:Punk:

2. Do not try and stay with the riders ahead of you if they are riding out of your comfort zone. We dont want any accidents. We have a tail end charlie so if you dont know where you are going then just wait for them. The only thing you might miss out on is an extra drink or getting your food order in first, but hey there is more to life right!

3. If you have to cross the centreline entering a blind corner, or you find when you are exiting a corner you are over the centreline, you need to slow down and look at how you are cornering. Try going wider on the corner. There is no reason you should be over that whiteline on blind corners, you are putting yourself at danger and any rider following you. If in doubt find a course to do cos it will help!

4. Do not freak out if a big sports bike comes up behind you (or just someone travelling faster than you). You do not need to go any faster. Ride your ride and give them the oppitunity to pass when it is safe. You never know sometimes that rider is happy to sit behind you. However it is always nice to give someone who is travelling faster than you the chance to pass if there is space.

I hope people dont take this to heart but see it as the constructive advice it is meant to be. Its looking like a great summer ahead so lets try to all stay upright and enjoy it!! Hope to be there next week for a "Hopping" good ride :done:

Well said Liv!!!

As for me who is usually at the back anyways, I know and understand that as a newbie everyone is faster than me so if someone wants to overtake they can, I won't feel like I have to keep up. As Liv says I would rather get to the destination in one piece feeling like I have done the ride to the best of my abilities. I feel very grateful that you are all looking out for me as you know whats its like to be the "newbie" and all the hints and tips that have been given have been greatly appreciated!! That said, I will always ask for help if I feel out my comfort zone and thankfuly I have never been made to feel I have to do something I'm not comfortable with and believe me I will tell you if I don't feel comfortable!!

Thanks to you all for all your help and support! You know who you are!!!

Thanks for the tips.
The group ride was certainly a new experience for me.
Not counting the snail pace protest ride the other weekend, the largest would have been 7 of us at the Waimak or Banks Peninsula during the 90's, all on trail bikes, which is hardly the same thing.

During the ride I found myself looking in the rear vision mirror a helluva lot more than usual. Which is both good and bad.
Also ended up riding home in the dark which hadn't been done in a long, long time and found quite enjoyable.

Another 135km on the clock.

Anyway, a good experience and would do it again sometime.
But not too often, as my young lad stayed up until I got home. The dear wee thing...

Sorry, I've forgotten your name, (I'm hopeless with names), but thanks for making me feel welcome and checking up on me at the second stop :)
All was good.

You never know, the big sports bike behind you could be a road whale like mine and very hesitant on some of the "lumpy" sections :angry2: - but they should still leave you some "personal space" too. Always helps to have a sensitive front brake switch, I've found - you can lightly cover the brake, enough for the lights to come on, to try to telegraph some risk to the following traffic (including cages) and **maybe** get some space back. :eek5:

The ultimate option is always just to pull over and let them get on with their crash as they see fit, and without you as collateral damage... and even on a "sports bike" I've taken that option many times, it's just not worth the risk.

Ride well, hopefully see you all next week.

It's quite short though...google map (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=347+Moorhouse+Ave&daddr=-43.543105,172.642636+to:Dyers+Pass+Road+to:Evans+P ass+Rd+to:Governors+Bay+Rd+to:The+Twisted+Hop&geocode=FSGjZ_0dNU1KCimT6IFgGYoxbTGv99ILFFRYrQ%3B% 3BFfPMZv0dC1BKCimzsMmUKSEybTEKX8X2TM46Eg%3BFWTOZv0 dfu9LCg%3BFSynZv0d6uNKCg%3BFc22Z_0dRUxKCiG5Cx7-M9qxVym7XBNyIooxbTHD2jWnbj1DOg&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=15&via=1,4&sll=-43.53794,172.648258&sspn=0.015555,0.027509&safe=active&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.577406,172.660446&spn=0.124359,0.22007&z=12)

Basically head up Dyers, turn left onto Summit Rd the down into Lyttleton, around the bays and back over Dyers to the Twisted Hop.

A longer option would be: google map (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=347+Moorhouse+Ave&daddr=Gasson+St+to:Dyers+Pass+Road+to:Evans+Pass+R d+to:Governors+Bay+Rd+to:Gebbies+Pass+Rd+to:Old+Ta i+Tapu+Rd+to:Osterholts+Rd+to:-43.616442,172.570839+to:The+Twisted+Hop&geocode=FSGjZ_0dNU1KCimT6IFgGYoxbTGv99ILFFRYrQ%3BF b-VZ_0dZFFKCg%3BFfPMZv0dC1BKCimzsMmUKSEybTEKX8X2TM46 Eg%3BFWTOZv0dfu9LCg%3BFSynZv0d6uNKCg%3BFWt1Zf0dymR KCg%3BFaMQZv0dcgJJCg%3BFRpQZv0dzh9JCg%3B%3BFc22Z_0 dRUxKCiG5Cx7-M9qxVym7XBNyIooxbTHD2jWnbj1DOg&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=2&mrsp=8&sz=13&via=1,4,5,6,7,8&sll=-43.61172,172.589378&sspn=0.062144,0.110035&safe=active&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.620668,172.65976&spn=0.248539,0.44014&z=11)

What say ye?

I have a bit of a cold and feel sick, that's why i didnt post this up.

Hmmm...is it bad? There's kind of no avoiding that road if we go through Lyttleton

Do you have something against diversions?

Short week means working late again tonight.

Well that would depend on the diversion. For example: I'd have no complaints about a woman flashing me so someone else could sneak past me ;) but I wouldn't like being kicked in the balls for the same effect...

the diversion is tiny.

there is however a patch of grit on the diversion, but speed is down to 30 through there so there's no reason anyone should be going wide or anywhere near it.

I think we'll go the full wets route and end up at the hop.

That sounds like a scheme so cunning you could tie a tail on it and call it a weasel:chase::laugh:

Going to open it up in a couple of weeks but it looks like the powervalve has decided to get friendly with the piston.

Interestingly enough that seems to be the case with the RGV right now too.
