Well thanks for all the advice people, will take all of it into consideration when i make the move to the next bike :) Although i'm only riding a 250 at the moment i have actually been riding since i was 14, but i never got around to getting my full licence and have only owned small bikes and i haven't had a bike for the last 12 years. I thought that while i get my confidence back i'll start off again with a 250. For my height and weight I probably wouldn't get anything bigger than a 650/750 and something in a small frame too. I'd also love to give bucket racing ago one day too, it looks like a right royal bag of fun to me! I'm enjoying riding with the experienced riders on wednesday rides, following their lines and seeing how they ride. Its a great way to learn what to do and... ahem... in some cases what not to do...
I'm very much like you, started reasonably early but never got around to a full licence, in fact had my learners for 17yrs. Had about the same break you did then ran around on a 250 until I got my full a few years back. I'm enjoying riding my old 600, I was looking for something reasonably light and comfortable that was able to travel 2 up, and it was bloody cheap.

I've never had any sort of bike training so I'm happy for people to tell me what I'm doing wrong in fact I would appreciate it, I think I've survived this far by being a very average rider but with a very strong self preservation instinct.

After reading all this, I don't think I will bother coming along on a Wednesday night ride for a very long time at least until I am a so called "experienced rider". which IMO will be a very long way off. I think there are some great teachers amongst the riders that go on the Wednesday night ride that I would love to learn off. RQ been one of them. I am always open to productive criticism. So if any one wants to take me under their wing I am all for it but it wont be on a Wednesday night.

Na kerry its not that bad. There is a difference between those who ride at the front and those who ride at the back. I know that if it wasnt for the people I have met at the WNR and the few pointers that I have been given along the way I would probably have not have gotten the confidence to do most of the rides I do. I am one of the orgional "Learner" riders in the group and I will always recommend the group to anyone as those that take the time to give pointers are awesome. However if you really want to learn do the course that Dangerous has put up a link to earlier cos those guys know how to teach.

I am with steve, I dont think of myself as an awesome rider at all, I think I have heaps to learn and am happy to sit at the back and take my time. However I do see myself as a competent rider, and this is thanks to the pointers I got from this group and from doing courses on my bike. I ride for me and no other. I also mainly do this ride these days for the social aspect, I love meeting everyone and catching up. I consider a lot of this group to be very good friends of mine and Phoenix so lets stop the bickering and keep it that way!

I'd just like to point out to anyone watching the thread that is being put off from coming along (wouldn't be hard) that the BS that gets posted in this thread and the actual ride itself are very different beasts.

An overwhelming majority of people on the ride don't post in this thread.

Who can blame them.

EDIT: That's not to say that these posts are completely worthless, there have been some posts of some merit but they have very little to do with the way the majority look at these rides, and the only posts that actually one hundred percent matter are the ones that go "I think we should ride to x" and the ones that say "x is in y condition and so this suggestion is z"

Oh ffs. I'm getting sick of all this bitching and moaning and trolling. There's nothing wrong with an awesome wheely now and then as long as you're not putting other riders in danger!! Which leads me to my next point: If when on these rides someone does something that really upsets you (you're afraid for your safety) then we can talk to them politely and say "hey, could you not do that near me again?" Afterall, we're all human. We all like a thrill, but we all have our own boundaries :girlfight:

and bling for you too.:2thumbsup

and bling for the ktm rider from wheatsheaf to gebbies pass, some nice air you had there:2thumbsup

Never going to be perfect, big mix of people, Nice to see some others help out with advice, I'm only good enough to keep myself out of trouble so keep me mouth shut,

KP has improved immensely and she will go far. At this point I didn't see any "bad habits"

So you guys who are quick to slag off and give these young ones and new ones shit about their riding and I don't mean only Mr D.
Pull your heads in, You are muddled up, I never hassled KP riding I used the example or 4k/2.5m as just that NOT as you read it.

slag off, give shit, pull my head in... FYI RQ again you have me wrong I dont give them shit and I will NOT pull my head in, I have and do p/m those that may wish for some help and if you are refering to tupelo I said rides like shit.. I only repeated his own words I also gave him praise for the distance he has come so far. If I slag of its in good tast and ment as no harm and is cos I give a shit.

Shrek will tell you i was a shocker when I first got onto the XJR last year. wonder I never lost my head they way i was going...
ok you hit me OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwwww LOL so Ill hit you...
if you were a shocker (your words) ONLY just last year, how the bejevis can you be so good and such a good tutor in less than one year.. Iv been trying for 27yrs and still learning?

After reading all this, I don't think I will bother coming along on a Wednesday night ride. Why do you say this? all info has been helpfull and no abuse passed on... its all good, why be sceard? the group is now a very stable one.

You missed my point... at your age and HWFM, pay attention to what the elders say, we been around and seen it all ya know... like I posted ride safe learn slow go up in CC's and make it to my age then doing a wheelie like I posted is no more unsafe that riding in a straight line.

IMO its les safe for a greenie (but learning well) like you to be flunting ya self on what is one of the fastest bikes on the road/hills than it is for a old cock like me doing a wheelie in a empty road with no one watching. (you do relise the young think cos you handle a R6 so can they)

Stop right there... who the hell do you think you are Dave "your rides" ask me to leave... not possible, you sound like lama solo? loan rider... do you think you are a gang leader some one important... ya not just like me... get over it man you will find it more relaxing.

The roads are free for anyone to ride, and dicks wont last long and thats with out even having to threten them like you just did me. You are young and green man... but a hell of a good prick aswell.

So just for you dave... when you grow up (takes 100,000s of kms and decades) you to will be able to do this... and this

that'll about do it. sucessfull troll is sucessfull.

now to reap the benefits of being as cool as D.

sorry to everyone who got caught up in that I'm just trying to make a point to D that saying something to wind someone up then backing out with his usual "oh im just kidding" or whatever is annoying and doesnt gain any favours.

I thought about PMing him about it instead to make the point, but decided public humiliation would be more fitting, it seems the shoe is on the other foot now.

to anyone who wants to come on the ride, there is very little that is "dangerous" (not that one ^) about the wednesday night ride, there's been what? 2 or 3 accos? 1 by myself a long time ago, I'm not going to try deny anything and I've had feedback about "dodgy" riding from only a few people, but I think this is all well and truely outweighed by the excellent time had by like minded people doing something they love in a comfortable friendly environment.

the ride is not mine, it does not belong to me, I do not claim to have a gang or any ownership of it or anyone on it, i said this only to get a rise out of D, and it worked really well!

once again, sorry to those who got caught up, I have mad respect for everyone here but think I made my point.

Ditto...Thats what it's all about.
I rode everywhere on me own until I got with this KB crowd around 3 or so years ago... then all went downhill;). And now I enjoy either, group or solo, it's a good place to get a grip and develop ya self, with or without feedback. Just by using your eyes and watching others.:2thumbsup

Kerry thats the point... there are people who are happy to ride at YOUR pace, so you are never a hinderence to others! I use to think that Brent, Wayne and Carl were driven nuts but how slow I was and if they were they never said. All as they did was ENCOURAGE! Now I dont even think twice if one of them is behind me cos I know that they can pass me if they want, otherwise I just assume they are enjoying riding at my slow pace.

If you want to pluck up the courage to come then let me know. I for one will be more than happy to ride with you at your pace!

It's not as bad as it sounds, just turn up on wed nite and have a chat to some people, you should have no trouble finding someone to ride with.

Just hang back and tag on the back of the group as they leave if you're worried about holding someone up, if you know where you're going you can ride your own ride and get there when you get there. Me and no doubt a few others would be quite happy to keep you company at the back of the bunch, hell I've been on a few rides where I was the back of the bunch :bye:

No her first ride was to the Magpie, after putting about 20K's on the bike.

I can understand her dilemma, she knows most of the riders, she knows a lot of the forum talk is just that talk, but she does not want to get caught up in politics and testosterone induce head butting contests over who has the biggest bike(or dick), who has the most K's under their belt etc etc.

For the unformed Kerry is well versed in the dynamic, an unfortunate side effect of being married to me, she saw the bullshit that went down over the last couple of years.

Meanwhile back on track ...
I was thinking - up and over Dyers Pass, past Sign of Kiwi to Gov Bay, Wheat Sheaf, Gebbies Pass, Summit Rd, straight ahead past Sign of Kiwi again, follow Summit Rd, down Evans Pass to Sumner = minimum distance to the twisties from BK carpark and maximum amount of twisties.

Sounds good to me! if it stays dry...

Kerryhare, believe me when I say you won't hold anyone up, they can pass you if you are! Besides when they all shoot away and wait at the designated points they have to wait on us turning up  I actually never seem to make the same destination as them as I'm riding slower than them and have to turn back round as they are coming back!!

If anything you will only have about 4-5 people in the slow group! So you won't actually hold anyone up!

FireLiv is very patient following us newbies and is a good person to have follow! She doesn't mind slow!! I should know cause this is one newbie she followed after I had been riding a grand half hour!!!

Hows the south doing?

Subike
30th December 2009, 16:37
It started raining heavy as here in north cant at 1pm, thunder and lightning with a definate temp change in a very short time. Since then it has not stopped and I think it is heading south towards you guys, so if you see grey clouds to the north east, expect lots of rain.
Other than that, if it does rain, then its good practice for the new riders who dare to face the elements and go on the ride.
Have a good ride peoples, double your braking distances and watch out for those shinny slippery spots.

Seriously. Make sure you do come. Do one ride, and make your mind up after that. Anyone that wants to pass you will do so at a safe and appropriate time and not scare the bejesus out of you.

Yep - done the drowned rat impression too much this year, went shopping for some new watertight pants today.... seriously, have a look at some of the PVC over-jackets in at the Red Sheds. The cheapie stuff appears to be the same as the DriRider & INOX stuff, but about 1/3rd the price - and at that rate, I can always replace at the first sign of a leak (which will likely be because of me catching a seam on a boot donning whatever roadside, which would be happpening no matter the name - or price - on the label!)

Anyway, won't be out tonight - someone else will have to get lost for me! - but down to Twizel on Fri so I guess the road whale will get enough twisties (& KMs) until I'm back on the 4th (BMW owners set-to) - have a good NY all & **safe** riding (assume the other idiot is a tourist / txting / drunk / having a domestic / is Nick Smith :dodge: at all times!)

Did you buy the yellow/green PVC cheap stuff from the RED Shed
ROFL, the pants will last about 2 hours, the PVC lining peals off leaving big holes. Sadly usually in the crutch and inner thigh area. They also split down the leg seam.
Many of my co workers have tried them at work in the vineyards last winter, utter crap!
The jackets are not too bad for being water tight, just the buttons/domes stop working after about the 5th time you use them. The pockets rip at the corners when you put things in them.
I would NOT recomend to anyone the yellow/green PVC "wet weather" gearfrom the red shed.
Sorry as this is a public forum, I cannot give you the brand name.

Twas a good end to the WNRs 2009.
A small but nice turn out.
Weather dried up and wind died down to make for a pleasant cruse over Dyres round the Bays to the Weaty for Big Sausage Roll and Chips... with red stuff. :blip:

Then back round the Bays to Lyttelton with about half of us finishing via the Summit and back down Dyers to our respective homes etc.

Cheers all and good night.

Yea sorry. I would use them. Really I would. But Im still young enough to want to look cool while Im riding my bike and I have disposable income which I plan on enjoying while I can. So sadly while the practical side of me says I should do that, the "You'll look like a tool" side of me says "You'll look like a tool wearing bread bags".

PS. Stop trying to rip me off, those bags are unused and hence dont have crumbs to shake out.

Damn! so shiney and looked so lonely sitting in the corner wanting a new owner, but alas i wasn't able to take it home :( Bumped into Dan (Tupolo) getting a new tire for his bike, he'll be wrapped getting it fitted before the long weekend :) After we pulled ourselves away from the shiny things we covert so much we went for a lovely ride up through Dyers, along the bays and down through Sumner. Did you let that bike lay down on the job somewhere between here and there?

no no, i was getting a new clutch installed and my awesome mechanic (Glouster motorcycles - strongly recommend people) found someone (a previous owner) had decided to install the wrong clutch, which in turn was causing damage the inside of the clutch case.

I ordered a new aftermarket one from aus, when it got here I realised it was a stator cover (i should've paid more attention to the photo and not the incorrectly labled description) they're going to refund it though.

due to xmas and new years the stator cover took a week to get here etc etc stuffing around.

it's NZD$300 for a new OEM yamaha one, or i can import one from the US for about NZD$150, OEM will be here late jan, US one will be here in 3-5 days....go figure?

was gutted we didnt get to take the bikes to qtown, but with 12 cops on the road and the masses or traffic, the blotchy weather it was probably best to take the co'rolla, needless to say we had an awesome time.

Hi guys - the summit road is all good!
I rode it on Sunday, pretty much like your planning for your ride, done a round trip from Gebbies, round the bays and back over the summit roads back to Gebbies. The road was pristine all the way!
Was up there last night (Tuesday) showing some out-of-towners the view of ChCh and the only change is the Sumner lookout corner, where some dick in a car decided to smear big stones and gravel all over the corner when he was taking off. So the mess will be on your side of the road heading to Evans Pass intersection.
Have a good ride, its a nice ride up there.

I will do that ride one day...I just hate the sharp downhill corners, I feel I slow down too much and nurse the bke around them, ... love those uphill corners though.. :)... My problem after getting back in the saddle after a 20 year break is my confidence in me and my bikes abilities...I intend on signing up for a track day tutoring course in April,....but for now will climb a few hills to practice practice practice. :)

Anyway thought ya mate would have lent ya his spare bike, probably even has a ducati belt buckle to go with it.............He's no mate of mine after what he did to me as I just said! How did you know he has a Ducati buckle? He told me it was a secret that he loves Ducati's, and the Ducati gear he has is just his Friday night "dress up" if you know what I mean. Pillow talk is how I found out - have you been around there too you slippery sausage?

Gotta love those twisties up on the summit. I thought the road was pretty good, not much grit. The camera i was testing last night worked pretty good too, just need to work on a vibration free mount now and some fluff to stop the wind noise over the mic hole. Other than that i think it will do the job just nicely. Me thinks that making a mini steady cam set up will work a treat, so better get into the Bat cave and have a tu tu (not wear one) It was great having a beer and a chat at the ale house too, good to see a good turn out of bikes :) Also was great to be surrounded by triumphs even if they were roaring past me lol

Mighty sorry I missed yesterdays run. Stuck in bed with a sore; guts, head and ass at the moment.

Its typical that I have arguably the worst handling bike in the group but I really love the summit road, might have something to do with me believing that my grandfather worked on it during the great depression.

The one thing that recently really helped my gravel fear was doing a bit of trail bike riding. It taught me how to step the bike out and still retain control while in a skid, its actually easy to do but to me its counter intuitive as a road rider.

Any how I am stuck at home feeling very sorry for myself at the moment.

I didn't get along as bike needs a new tyre and have to wait for it to arrive and fit it in between painting the damn house. Jeez I'm sick of sanding. If any sado masichists out there would like to finish the place off for me, feel free to pop around.

*waits for the "its a free world and riders rights to dress how they want" bigade ...Yeah, I though about that and figured that in all the years I've been riding and the number of "offs" I've had (mainly as a teenager learning the ropes) I've never munted the front part of the helmet. So I've decided to take the calculated risk, however the open face will only be used for local rides, the fullface remains for the longer open road trips. One thing about the open face I'm enjoying is the better view, the wind in the face, and a greater sense of freedom. It's like you don't have a helmet on at all and the combination of the Triumph and the open face helmet is more like it was when I first started riding all those years ago - just plain, simple, uncomplicated fun :ride:

I've heard that can be cause of misuse

like they say pretty implicitly how you're suppose to clean them, all of which are in the interests of maintaining the thread strength.

my last pair of dragons disintegrated working in a warehouse over summer, the denim just broke away.

I wear the dragon oilskins (which're suppose to have relative waterproofness) in the instructions I'm pretty much told to never clean them cause it'll remove the oil from the thread, apparently I have to use cold water and scrub out any "soiling" (lol) or use the hose, however I'm then not allowed to tumble dry, or dry in the sun, they have to hang dry somewhere....and that takes up to 3 days!

they've lost most of their waterproofing now anyway so i might just give them a clean in the washing machine.

Even in the height of summer ... the return trip would be in the dark. On highway one. Probably one of the most dangerous pieces of highway one (south island anyway)... NIGHT or DAY. The inland route return would take longer, and not really be any better at night for learners or inexperienced riders.

I disagree, we use to do the trip on a Friday night for burgers all the time.
We even did it to see Sonic off, when he went home as he had a late Ferry booking.
SDU, Bent51 and I went that far to make sure he got that far OK and had a meal with him.
There are photo's and a thread on the trip, but can not find them at the moment.

True it is not a trip for beginners or faint hearted.

It's only dark there are no Boggy man out there to get you.
You just have to ride to conditions.

I could be keen IF we leave at 6 O'clock sharp from the shop.
AND if we have good group of riders that can ride quick-ish at night.

I'll be keen for a normal run on Wednesday night. Would a ride to diamond harbour and a stop at the pub out on the point be good? Its a good ride out there for learners and experienced a bit of everything for everyone.

I would like to do the Kaikoura run too but not fair on the learners. It makes it a bloody long ride at 70KPH. Part of the whole WNR experience is stopping at destonation X. Whether you get there faster or slower is up to the experience or the patience of the rider but we do all get to destonation X in the end. Having perhaps a Saturday or Sunday day riding group started up would be a good idea if there are a group of riders that want to ride the likes of Kaikoura or Hamner or the like would be great. Even another night of the week for more experienced riders who want to ride longer distances. Splitting the WNR group into 2 destonations will in my humble opinion only end up with learners at spot X and experienced at spot Y and detracts away from the idea of the WNR in the first place.

R1maddness has done this ride before and so have a few others and so have I.
It may have been put up in jest, but it is not the first time there has been a break away group.
After all there is the Duvachelle Gp crew.
And there other riders, like when the day light is shorter, a lot do not go all the way to the Duvachelle Pub.
Others will not do the Summit Road and there have been others.

Think of this as a one time ride, at night to Kaikoura, but the ride home it will get dark.
We will get there with day light.
And I would not call the Hundalee's boring to ride at night or hard.
Just all the roads are so different to ride in the dark.
It is like riding them for the first time again.

All tho not a ride for beginners because they must be home by 10 O'clock.
It could be a good ride for learners to learn or try to ride at night, while it is still warm and not as cold as it is in winter.

It is not every ones cup of tea.
And the weather would have to be nice.

I have talked to a few people and I know they will do the ride if they can get home from work in time.
So we have a possible four people.

Sorry this break away ride in on the normal WNR thread, but it may have started here as a joke or a piss take.
But now it is a happening thing as far as I'm concerned.
So if you think you and your bike are up for this. (think before putting your hand up)

Six O'clock start from Just Motorcycles.
We have to get an earlier start and R1 has to close his shop first, so I think this is the best idea.
And we do not have to ride right across town.
Which can be hard to keep a group together.
Full tank of gas. (there is a Shell garage across the road)
181 km and about a 2 1/2 hour ride one way.
We could pick up another group out of town. (just thinking out loud)

If I'm travelling with company. What the hell, we went to Ashburton at 9pm a couple of fridays ago to say hi to a mate, what's a ride to kaikoura.

If I'm flying solo I might bring the scooter (if it's legal by then), and keep the learners company at 70kph. :eek5:

Well I can think of better things to be doing at 2400 hrs on Wednesday night. Like snuggling up in bed with my wife (and mind your own business).

Just the standard ride for me boys and girls.

So where are we off to this week Flip??????:sleep:And I don't mean your place either!!!!

Anyway, if it's to kaikoura it'll be on the XJ, the scooter doesn't bear thinking about.

I was thinking I could take it into town for a shorter ride at learner pace :scooter:

I'll be keen for a normal run on Wednesday night. Would a ride to diamond harbour and a stop at the pub out on the point be good? Its a good ride out there for learners and experienced a bit of everything for everyone.
.

Well this gets my vote this week. The bug I had has laid me pretty low so are only able to do a short run.

Diamond Harbour gets a vote from me - as much as a ride to Kaikoura sounds great, i think my current skill level limits me to a shorter ride on more familiar roads - on a longer trip i might be tempted to try and keep up with others too much.

So .... is that three choices ... Kaikoura, the standard ride ... or a snuggle with Flip's wife ... ??? :innocent:

No I don't think Flip would be too happy with all these bikers snuggling up to his wife!!

Diamond Harbour is good for me!! And to thise doing the Kiakoura run, ride safe and have fun!! I'm just jealous!!! I would be the one that would be caught speeding and over my curfew, thats just my luck!

Well, I'll be up for the short one - gave up the "500kms for snacks" runs after uni, and after $500+ for tyres last week I'm maybe thinking I should ration myself a bit!

also - cheeky comments, semi in-jest; applies specifically to the long-run crew but also to the regulars - make sure you've got the basics ... spare lights (esp headlight), fuses, tyre repair kit (Petra!), torch so you can use them, hazard triangle or flashers, first aid kit if you feel particularly responsible...

Have a good ride, wherever!

I had a Dr200 once, it was a good wee bike. When i sold it a chap turned up to take it for a ride. He asked what the gears are? I said "First gear is down" so he road around the back yard slowly and then said i'll take it! He handed me the cash and then rode off down the road in first gear and off into the distance!! Perhaps i was at fault and should have told him that it had 4 more gears that are up? I dunno you tell me?! lol

Even in the height of summer ... the return trip would be in the dark. On highway one. Probably one of the most dangerous pieces of highway one (south island anyway)... NIGHT or DAY. The inland route return would take longer, and not really be any better at night for learners or inexperienced riders.

WORNG. according to the police the worst road in canterbury for motorcycle accidents it the bit from Hallswell to Little river. State highway 1 hardly rates a mention.
People that are too scared to ride at night need to get out more.

R1madness
12th January 2010, 17:39
So yet again the WNRs will digress away from what they're intended to be ??

What are they intended to be? I thought they were a chance to get out, socialise, meet other bikers and go for a ride. Stopping every 20 mins for 10 mins is a yawn and sometimes some of us just want to go a bit further.

No i wasn't a pisstake or a joke Darryl you should know me better than that. I was, am and always will be serious when i post a RIDE. What i do at 2am is noone elses business but i certainly was not drinking. Look some people dont want to go. Fine. But some do. The whole WNR thing is open to anyone, for any bike, any distance and time frame. Yes its good to bring the learners along. I always support that, even bring my daughter along most rides, but its fair to say that some of us do like to go further, faster, and longer than a summet road ride. Its not a breakaway group... its just a few guys going for a hoon... come if you want. dont if you dont. Is less than 400km round trip.

Re 1st post of this thread & the thread from 08 WNR here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/106734-Chch-Weds-Night-Cruises-2009-10?p=1129382973#post1129382973)

You expect novice riders wanting to learn from more advanced riders & so-called experienced riders to deal with a ride to Kaikoura departing that time of the evening, having to deal with long-haul rigs coming from Picton, tired car drivers doing the same etc and that's just getting to Kaikoura then deal with the return journey aswell? some of the smaller bikes would struggle with fuel let-alone the other hazards that piece of SH1 throws up?
If you're bored with the usual proceedings then that's your inadequatacy and Yeah maybe the intention of the rides is a socially fuelled experience but it's also to help the younger riders and throwing them in the deep end isn't helping and does put a few off the idea of being involved too because senior riders are more intent on their own wants rather than thinking of what they can contribute.
