The bike didn't go bang but it WONT bang.
The battery was flat so took it out and charged it.
Placed it back in, bike turns on, ignition primer all good.
Pressed the starter, bike turns, ignition starter rolls but no bang in the cylinders. Not even a pop.
Hmmm... Will fiddle with it tonight and try to get it going.

Hey jolly_26 assuming you were a starter with the group at BK and got lost along the way on the actual ride then I'd suggest next time asking the person giving the ride brief for a guide, in theory he should find you someone who knows the way to look out for you, to make sure you know when to turn if the group gets separated in traffic at lights etc.
Same goes for anyone else that may have a problem navigating if they find they fall behind in traffic, from the various rider speeds or what have you.
Unfortunately unless otherwise told we assume everyone knows the way and so for example no one waits through red lights for those stuck at them.

lol you guys all seem to think I'm going to do wheelies on my 200kg bike. ..:weird:
I didn't finish work until 7pm.. so wasn't able to get to BK anyways. .
maybe. . just a suggestion. .. the guy leading should know how to check his side mirrors for those behind . .. and guy tailing should know the route. ensure all newbies and non chch parties stick together between the two. It's a group ride after all and confidence building for new bikers goes a long way knowing people are watching out for you. Not a speed challenge. ..I enjoyed my first two years riding with you lot. . always had a couple of you watching out for me. ..knowing I was a newbie. ..I appreciated that immensely and try to pay forward but hell,:killingme I still get wrong turns even now lol

I'd hazard a guess that the route taken being more scenic via the bays instead of the direct way out wouldn't help in that case.

Good ride - though my munted knee didn't help in the left bends too much. Sorry I missed you all, hopefully catch up next week. Perhaps a north Canty ride?

Well I will be congregating with myself and anyone else at woodend and wait for you guys to sedately ride past in the 50k zone.
I am keeping pluggig this as we only have a few days left with our offer on TreatMe - but 50% off 1 of our 6 hour training courses and you can get up to $100 off your next years premium with GoLightly Insurance for completing the course which covers the cost!

Won't be with y'all for a couple of months'- had back surgery on Thursday which the surgeon described as going routinely well. Panadol is my new bestest friend. I certainly won't be thinking of the pizzas at Hurunui, oh no, not at all, not the Hurunui Pub pizzas...

Any thoughts about doing a run out to The Blue Pub, Methven for a WNR?
The same route we did in winter the Inland Scenic Route.
We haven't been out that way for years we used to go out to Hororata Pub but that's been closed.

...Yea, we need to reinstate the Leader and Tail End Charlie thing, basically just ride as a group rather than a bunch of individuals going roughly the same direction
Not convinced that is enough with this bunch of individuals and this still doesn't stop people mid group missing turns when gaps in the group open up large enough so they can no longer see where the rider in front of them went.
They don't always know they are lost until they discover the people behind them aren't there anymore either.
Also not convinced from previous posts on the topic of control that you'll get enough cooperation across the range of riders to do something like the cornerman system either.
I'm tending to think it'd be simpler just buddie people who are not so familiar with the routes up with someone who is and is willing to keep them in their mirrors making sure they see the turns, then the rest of the riders can continue to do what they are doing without the anti authoritarian (for want of a better description) posts of the past repeating. Of course that also relies upon riders realising they aren't going to know all the turns so might need a buddie.

I recall a while back that we had a number of set routes with maps posted so peeps could, if they were so inclined, research where the ride would be going. I guess it is just one of those things, if you don't know the way you need to stick with someone who does. Easier said than done when meeting a new group of people, but make yourself known and you will be looked after.
Speaking of which I am waiting for the TA visor lecture ;-) This season I have a transitional visor that changes from tinted to clear depending on light levels, highly recommend it.

lol, it did cross my mind when the first ride was posted this season and I had a little chuckle remembering the previous happenings around the topic but na, decided stuff it.
I now have glasses that do that tinting thing but they no so effective under a UV filtering visor, but a light reactive visor sounds fantastic... and expensive I imagine. Will try remember to get a look at that when next we meet.
GP,maps are nice but the directions given so far this season have been good enough for me personally to understand which way the group is intending to go.
I really dislike leading the group over all but I am happy to buddie with one or two others to help them find the way... on the days I actually show up.

I'm not sure if they are available for all makes of helmets GP, mine is a Bell. The visor was about $100US vs $70US for normal tinted visors, so just a bit dearer. I got the helmet & visor through motorcycles508.com, they had a special and free international shipping deal going at the time.

First Regroup by the Z fuel station in Yaldhurst and again in Waddington before heading of to Methven, if you want the route directions I can post them up.

They went there the week before last.
I'd go more often and vote for longer rides if departure time was earlier but I know that is not possible for the majority as it has been discussed before.
Just got the WR back from having work done to it so have an extra bill to pay this week. If I go out I might go say hi then pop down to the Valley Inn for the bangers and mash again or just get a burger on the way home.
Hope you enjoy the ride to methven the rest of you. :niceone:

Interesting, I usually go via West Melton and Hororata as it tends to be a little more direct. Is there a reason for the Old West Coast Road -> Waddington part? Nicer scenery?

Hi folks, the time has come to sell my beautiful '99 DR350. I'm gonna put it on Tardme next week but thought I'd let you folks know in advance in case anyone here wants it first.
1999 Dirt model (kicker)
Good nick, well used but very reliable and lots of fun! :woohoo:
Comes with:
Stock tank and larger Ascerbis 15L tank (I think it's 15L).
Spare set of wheels so I can do a quick swap out from road tyres and gearing to dirt tyres, rimlocks and lower ratio gears.
Bunch of spare (used) tyres in varying states.
Box of stuff I've collected along the way.
Has rack on the back for mounting Top Box. Rack has very handy handles for enabling people to help you out of the mud!
Extra windscreen hand fashioned by Transalper himself :)
REG(on hold)/WOF, never had an issue ...
Probably some other stuff too that I've quite possibly forgotten ATM.
021-135-4343 if you're interested ...
Cheers!

great to be out on the WNR again- thats a good road to get to know the new bike - was getting there slowly - corners really well when its actually in the corner...its the getting into the corner that felt crap - probably result of the squared off rear tyre - so, new tyre and bit of fiddlin with suspension is in order.

Sounds like fun! Does seem like a big gap between regroups tho, should we have another as we enter Rangiora? Group usually fragments with fewer regroups. For me it's the riding with people that's the attraction, also good for newer/slower riders to be able to catch up.

So here goes.
BK, Gasson, Milton, Sparks. First regroup at Halswell vets. Some may wish to join up here. Old Taitap Rd and round to Gebbies, over the Summit Rd to Dyers Pass, down to Governors Bay, and back through to Gebbies pass via Teddington. Back onto the Akaroa hiway and to Taitap at the Pub.
I think the nameless one's orange thing might have the range for that:innocent::innocent::innocent:

Hi peoples, I'm Quentin the guy on the red/white cb1300. Frank is the guy that rode the Harley - and sorry to say that he damaged himself a little more than was perhaps apparent on Wednesday evening. He is currently in hospital with multipls fractures to his scapula and 6 broken ribs. These injuries have come not so long after quite a bad snow - boarding accident.
I think the doctors were amazed that he rode the bike home again afterwards. The Harley as most would have seen is barely damaged, though Frank has mentioned putting into the shop
to get it checked over - and the minor bits of damaged sorted. Myself and another couple of his work buddies went into visit him yesterday - and he seems
in good spirits, though I dont think he'll be along next week however. I should be along again...will see you's then..

What was the molesworth like? I'm thinking of doing it in January. What direction did you go and how long did it take?
Up (the parents live in Blenheim) and about 5 1/2 hrs; that includes abt 1/2 hr for a 5" coach bolt thru the rear tyre (!) and Jollies Pass (wouldn't recommend going in that way, just I couldn't find the other Hanmer exit, neither are well signposted). Enjoyable even on the GS (see pics in the album) but
- little signposting outside of the actual DOC areas - you might want a good off-net GPS program to help let you know where you've gotten to...
- Jollies Pass is a bear - Fulton Hogan (I think it's them that maintain it for Transpower) had put ~3" rockfill on the road at one of the steep switchbacks... sliding back more than I was sliding forward, grrr...
- road itself is nice fine gravel but quite washboarded in long sections so guess you might want to allow for that in speed or adj the suspension. Woulds guess quite greasy in the wet?
- road condition obvioulsy changeable - I had the grader going thru in the opposite direction - got rid of the washboarding but was scraping out the gutters one side so only had abt 4ft of road
- even when dry the hills are all scree & will be draining away; expect about 4 fords, deepest was abt 15" (and I misjudged it & went thru abt 35 - nice good soaking on a hot day  )
- not much room for passing (if any) so keep an eye out, esp on the Awatere Vly rd where some of the passes I'd guess would be abt 500m fairly straight down on the off-side
Rd itself is open 7-7pm, and after you've finished that you've got abt another 110Kms of gravel on the Awatere Valley Rd; main concern for me was getting out before the petrol shut at Seddon, I was wondering how much leeway I had after the full trip and topping up at Hanmer... In the end doesn't really matter, there's an unattended self-serve in the back of the Seddon Superette. Guess the whole issue would be how far on a tank in a lower gear doing 50-60?
Must admit after re-reading all the above that I've done my usual and put a downer on it - but I probably would re-do it, just not the worry of being ready for the loop back to Chch afterward (luggage, tyre issues, petrol, timing). And the Awatere Vly rd was OK but a bit of a downer after the Molesworth itself; might be better to do a in - up - back - down and return to Hanmer next time without all the non-senic farmland/ ravine sort of stuff after. YMMV!

Akaroa still on for Weds? Or would the weather make it better for Thurs? (and also for those that partake tonight?)
Just stirring.... :bleh::bleh::bleh::bleh:

My Girlfriend and I were thinking of going up to Blenhiem and staying a night there, day 2 would see us setting up camp in Molesworth at one of the camping spots. Day 3 would see us the rest of the way to Hanmer and possibly the rest of the way home. 2 up on the KLR will be fun through there :)

You'll be fine Gareth, it's a grade one gravel road. Biggest annoyance is other traffic including campervans that often just don't seem to see you sitting in their dust.
Jacks Pass (Jacks pass road on to Clarance valley rd) is the main one the tourists use on the North West and grade one, Jollies Pass is out of the Eastish side of town and is a bit rougher and less touristy, more 4x4ish.
There's a cost at the two Molesworth camp areas, $6 per person I'm guessing as usual for a DOC camp with only a toilet.

That site has info on the rainbow if you wanted to get more serious.
Don't forget to adjust tyre air pressure down a bit nearer 20/22psi front, 25ish rear? if things are excessively bumpy or rolly polly, even with a passenger on board.

I finally had a response from my travel company friend and there are no ships in at akaroa apparently for new years day so should be an ok run - not sure if I want to go up over the hill though!
It takes me nearly an hour to get to BK before we even start so personally would prefer a ride straight out through tai tapu and on to little river etc - don't know how everyone else feels? Happy to lead a group that way and meet the others going over the top at little river.
Hopefully be two up as well
does anyone know what the weather and wind will be like?

You could meet us at Millars and hiway 75 corner where we have our first regroup. For those who don't know Millars Road it is the one on the left near the end of the straight after the Blue Duck road house.
See you there about 2.30 to 2.45 ish Duncan?????

That's good to know because Greta Valley Pub next WNR.
Weather wise it was all sunny and hot going over to Akaroa, by the time we were leaving it didn't look too nice but nothing happened except the wind picked up.
Traffic was a bitch cars only doing 80kph so I was using my knowledge of the area to bypass as much as I could:ride:
I didn't know anyone followed me up Pigeon Bay Rd but it looked like they were giving chase:chase:

Yeah we followed you up the Pidgeon bay rd but not the stock route today. Was very nice on the summit rd - no cars and wind no problem.
Cheers all for the company today - good to put some more faces to names.

Thanks man, I think I saw you out riding a while back ... I was talking with the missus about bikers and I saw a bike that I though I recognised. The missus said "You think you know all the bikes!", sarcastically, and that's when you went past. I said "Yup, that was a friend of mine's step son. His name is ... " and so on.
Needless to say, she didn't believe me :)
The monologue is because the Sony has shit sound so I wired a mic up and stuck it in the helmet. Makes the audio much better but I really need to remember it's there. That's just me talking to myself as I ride, which I do all the time

Talking to yourself while riding, commenting only on the actual current riding experience/sensations adds to your videos as do the little typed comments you put in others of yours post production.
That is much better than someone blogging a story or thought in a video of themselves riding which has nothing to do with the story and often seems to be distracting them from paying attention to riding well.

So much for the weather coming through, hopefully next week will be better or maybe switch days.
On a side note the Summit Rd claimed another victim.
Coming back from Tia Tapu tonight went up Gebbies and rode back along the top, a rider had lost it before a corner looked like some grit got the better of them.
