[QUOTE=sibrit;1130206750 And I was a bit surprised at the number of 1-lane bridges on what is, essentially, a major highway.

Nice sibrit, how far did you get? or just to Arthurs Pass and back?
Love riding the stuff on the other side of the divide (except the sandflies when you stop) but that's probably because I live on this side so don't see it as often.
I think I mentioned the loop which can be varied from Jacksons to skip Greymouth or from Greymouth to include the coastal road to Westport....

There are of course other bigger loops but that one's a nice length, not to big, not to small.

Yes sure do, south of Greymouth is one (SH6 Taramaku road-rail bridge) before Kumara Junction. The Hoki bridge was replaced.

Sweet, the Mrs will be pleased. She was a newish learner driver not confident about reversing, especial in narrow places, when she drove up to it to face a train in the distance, her reaction was "I was here first he should back up". Quick driver change and we were well clear by the time the train came through.
In Auckland and Wellington they complain when the three lane roads get busy.:violin: And they keep falling off them whenever they go rural, like the Coromandal. They don't know what real rural roads are.

Is anyone likely to be riding on Sunday? I got to get back on - I've completely losing confidence. I am eyeing my bike like it's a grumpy stallion everytime I walk through the garage... Think I should have kept my GB400 :sweatdrop

Nice sibrit, how far did you get? or just to Arthurs Pass and back?
Just to the avalanche shelter for a toilet break, then thought "screw it", and rode back. I'd already been riding 3 hours (with breaks), and just couldn't be arsed to keep going. Next time I'll take provisions, and bring my camera and GPS.
Was a tad concerned by the lack of cellular reception out in the boondocks. Castle Hill? Castle friggin middle of nowhere Hill more like.... :zzzz: But nice surroundings. 500 sqm sections for $130,000. The commutes a bitch though.
Think it was about 300km there and back. Not bad for a Thursday ride.

Went and did the loop today with J on the back of the Transalp.
Have decided I agree with her in that we like the Lewis Pass better than Arthurs, to me it just seems to be nicer for longer.
Actually even better is the bit between Reefton and Springs Junction, it's a section of road I am tempted to turn around an do again as soon as I've been through it... which makes lunch in Reefton seem like a good idea, going via the Lewis Pass both directions.
You do have to get up toward the Hanmer turnoff on the way up to get to where the good stuff really sets in though... a few boring bits mixed in with the bends before that.
Sunday, I expect I'll be doing some walking as it seems I've emptied my tank a couple of times for this weekend already.
Hope you have a good one anyone who goes riding and maybe catch you again Wednesday of it's not wet.

To Reefton and back to Christchurch IS a nice ride. That 15 km (not to be taken lightly) corner at the Springs end of the Reefton Springs bit ... does need care though ... Heavy vehicles chew up the seal and can leave a loose surface ...

Actually sorry just heard that a bunch of friends are riding over to Akaroa from Wheatsheaf car park at 11:30. Couple of us leaving from the Avonhead side of town about 10:30 - I have been promised it is a slow ride. I was looking forward to meeting you Gloplug but the earlier time suits me better. Feel free to join us or I will see you next time.

Bollocks, think I might be out this weekend after all.
Pulled rear wheel off the Kat as it was a bit sticky. Thought it was a seized brake piston, which it was and is now fixed, but discovered the bearings are a bit rumbly/sticky and the brake pads were pretty much non existent. Realised I've never changed the brake pads since buying the bike in 2003-ish. Might have to check the front too ...

Don't think Weds would be a good idea either - work breakup day with associated liquid consumption IIRC... although I might be tempted if the weathers as good as Jimbo is making out - anyone any ideas for where?

Near the end of Amberly, when heading north, is a truck stop on the left with a huge area to pull in on the side of the road. I'll be in there very visible from the road as you approach.

Once near the Greta when you regrouped but took off before I could see (I thought you were stopping there) and later on the road near the Mud House Winery.
It was not until I passed that I knew it was you guys and thought you will not be stopping again before getting home, so I carried on home. (I did do the special KB wave LOL)

So that was you! I thought the rider looked at us quizzically after I waved at him, as we pulled away from the side of the road I thought "I hope that guy didn't think I was signaling to him that we needed help".
Had you pulled up along side as we went past the Mud House I probably would have recognised you but it was getting pretty dark by then ...
How is it having the ol girl back?
Did you get inundated with bugs as well? I had to clean the helmet twice on the ride and have just finished cleaning the bike (for the first time since I've owned it :o)
Man what a mess! Funnily enough, Mythbusters had an item on tonight about whether a bug could kill a biker by hitting their windpipe at speed. It couldn't unless it was some massive rare African thing that weighs a million tons at hits you in just the right spot going at 85 mph.

The Bonnie is a funny wee scooter and I do like riding it a lot.
I stand a better chance of keeping my licence on it, than the Gixxer. (which I do like ride for a completely different reason :msn-wink:)

Yep bug city, but that's part of riding at this time of year.

The one Mully is referring to I think is the GSXF wearing a bit of fluro. The ride had well split up by then, few of us at Little River decided to go to the Hilltop and back to Little River pub instead of all the way to Akaroa.
We had him behind us on the way up the hill but think he was about a minute behind when we pulled in and he continued past by mistake or design we do not know.
While we few were at the Pub later we saw him pass again heading home.
I never saw the motard or most the faster guys after leaving BK.
I ended up on back of a group of about 5 or 6 bikes as we climbed Dyres Pass and hung together thru Governers Bay, Gebbies, Little River, Hilltop and back the same way.
And yes, there is a ride every Wednesday, though if the weather is crap sometimes no one turns up.
Normally same meeting time and place but destination could be anywhere.

Right I'm with ya. Yeah the Faster group headed over Dyers, through that munted hilly road, over the and stopped for some fush n chups over at Akaroa.
4 of us left at about 8. I peeled off after catching them back up on the flats (:second:) and headed back through Halswell cause I realised my new TV show was on and she was getting a bit dark for my mirrored visor.

So what's the schnizzle for tomorrow? We doing the Hurunui Pizza run again? Was a fun ride but quite long ... I didn't get home until 11 last time ...
It's a very nice ride apart from the looong straight motorway bits to and from the city but once we're at about the Hanmer turnoff it gets, and stays, nice until we come back to the same point.
Beaut scenery out that way but it's a long ride ...
I reckon we do the usual BK at 6 leave 6.30, head straight up to the pub (sunnies an idea, lots of riding into the setting sun) then do Greta Valley on the way home ...
Ja? Nein?
Would people rather do a shorter ride instead?

nope, will not be the oldest,
If I get my Muffler back on,
old exsessive has a new rear tire to wear in, and long straight roads for the first few miles just sound like what she needs.
Funny how burn outs at rally's tend to make the tread disappear rapidly....
But hell, blowing a rear wheel bearing, cooking an axle and melting a spacer was not in the plan.
Dismantling a diff replacing bearings, new tire, phift, 3 hrs after work tonight, all done.
Had to go for a blast around the block to see if it worked.

Hey all,
Thanks for a great ride, first WNR on my sexy wee triple, and I TOTALLY LOVED IT. I remember how much I miss riding regularly when I get to ride.... fancy that!
Great to catch up with you guys that I havn't seen in a while, and to meet some new folk... equally great to see such a great proprtion of women along, whether riding or pillion, it adds to a more interesting evening :)
Hope I can make it along again soon, I will be watching out for weekend rides more now too, so point them out for me if you think of it!!
Cheers guys :)

Nice to meet you jen , noticed Kyla was quite happy on the throttle..... . .
Thanks, Kyla is a speed demon on that trike.. I lost her on the way home, night riding was a first for me but apart from the bugs that kept committing suicide on my helmet, it was actually pretty awesome.
I"m with Em, I was impressed with the amount of females that joined in, and after seeing all those great bikes I"m itching to get into something bigger lol:facepalm:

Yep, absolutely. Like Em said, keeps us boys under control a bit more and it's lovely to have such a mixed lot of people/bikes/styles/backgrounds etc. Another fun evening, thanks all!

I know, it has only been two days but any plans afoot about the next WNR?? A bit of notice helps me get along if it is not going to take me too far from the nest! :)
Also, safe and happy travels to all those heading off to rallies this weekend! Lucky! :)
Cheers,
Em :)

That was a good bit of brake work there Mr Hornet when we were coming into Sefton last night on our way home.
Yep that RD has been a great investment, +1 for the Beltronics RX65. :woohoo:
Was a good night out, except my jacket is now made of moth instead of leather - could barely see out of my visor which made things interesting around the Ashley Gorge....

Reckon we head to Aka for the next ride, make the most of the long daylight evenings (ie bigger ride)... tea there aka .... and to keep everyone happy back over the hill in daylight...and stop for a beer/wine at taitapu pub..... then its easy run home in the dark.
If weather not to flash, shorter circuit and back to taitapu pub ,as everyone knows their food pretty darn good too:yes:

No wet weather gear yet, this drizzle dosn't put me off, ridden in much worse, but wet jeans isn't such a nice feeling lol
