Ah, that was the spare engine. There's a cheap rolling chassis of a DR350 on tm at the mo that I would love to transplant it into!

Alas Wheelies, Swearing and Bitche$ were all on holiday so I had to put up with their substitutes Cleanliness, Godliness (twins, they're always next to each other) and apathy. :D
Meh, use what you got I believe the saying goes ...
I promise next time to keep it under 3 minutes and to include lots of visual stimuli just for you

Hope you are feeling better!? Was a good day today.
MinxiMe and I turned up early and had a quick bite to eat at BK, then waited till everyone turned up, which turned out to be MaxF and Gloplg. We hadn't heard from Peeteey so they went over Dyers and I went via Halswell. Roads were quite busy but maintained a good flow. Got to Little River said hi to R1Madness, Larikin and Sal. MaxF and Gloplg decided not to go over to Akaroa but I had promised MinxiMe chips. So we headed over only to be stuck behind a black Ferrari!! MinxiMe was so excited "it's a rari" he did however pull over and we passed as MM gawked at it!! After some chips and hotdogs we headed back. Traffic was pretty heavy at this point. It was a rather quiet drive back as MM fell asleep, so just came home.
As for the road conditions, apart from the usual potholes, ripples and dead animals, no grit to be seen on either side!

I hope your cat is not like the one in red dwarf, because that would be cause for concern.
The next vid should include the cat doing some riding , I saw some doco with a cat riding in a wee basket on the front a harley. ... and I have just seen your next lighting project for the beemer.... TESLA coils, would look awesome!

Ha ha, the cat from Red Dwarf is very funny but I don't think I'd like him curled up under my covers ...
I would LOVE to get some Tesla coils on the bike, how cool that'd look at night!
In fact, if I rigged it right then the coils could arc to me making the rider part of the show!

So 7 hardy souls braved the weather, actually wasn't that bad, alittle cold on the way home. Heading to the Valley Inn via Gebbies Pass, we all tootled along losing Peeteey to a dodgy battery but eventually found him at the pub with a different bike. Good ride and thank you to all that was behind me, hope you didn't have too slow a ride!!
Been 3 weeks since I've been on the bike and I can feel it in the ol' joints, going to be sore in the morning. Perhaps going back the way we came wasn't such a great idea! Also thanks to everyone for making sure I was in neutral!!
Was good to catch up with you all....

hey all, i have been chatting to a couple of the regulars this week and they seem keen for a Akaroa ride if the weather is good. Those wanting a shorter ride could stop at little river and we could catch you on the way back.
So i propose ...
BK, Halswell vets, old tiatapu rd, Little river... stop at the pub for those wanting a short ride... carry on over the hill for the rest. NO stop at Aka just a uturn and head back to Little River to catch up with everyone else for a lemonade (or coke for those wanting something stronger lol). Then a nice cruise home...
Thoughts??? Ideas??? Options???

Hi Kelly, The rides are only loosely orginised but we all try to look out for the new riders and make sure they enjoy themselves. Its not a race and there are riders of all ages and experiance levels as well as a vast variety of bikes from Harleys to sport bikes.
Come along. Im sure you will have a good time.

As long as you let someone know you're heading home then whatever works for you is fine, there's usually someone bringing up the rear so just stop when you've had enough and let them know. If the weather is actually ok my son will probably be along with his L plate on, there's always company for those not so keen on scraping the pegs around corners.

If its a planned early people can have time to free themselves up. The more the merrier i say .
I like that it doesnt matter what anyone rides, choppers cruisers sports naked tourers dualpurpose 250cc or 2300cc learner to racer and everything in between, we all like looking at the different bikes on display. I dont normally see 2 of the same model at any of the rides. :Punk:

Yes, when I'm running Win7 x64,:no: I can't see the posting times and dates and I am having problems putting smilies on the posts:eek::eek:.
However when I'm running Win XP I can:yes::yes: see dates and times. Smilies are also less of a problem:niceone::niceone:?????????

Last rally I went to was the March Hare a couple of years ago - my riding buddy had to take anti-flamms for his knees for days before hand so he could be there and sent me off to bed with a flea in my ear at a reasonable hour. If you like that stuff you probably enjoy most of the Arakoa run and if you want slightly more open corners with a few straights here n there the round trip Lewis and Arthurs Passes with or without extras like out to Westport down the West coast, and of course further a field... most the rest of the country. :D (not counting the 45 minutes on the Canterbury Planes in any given direction inland  )

Same in Japan. We spend an hour on the Tomei, Chuo or Kan-etsu to get to the best roads, cos believe you me, you don't want to be on the low roads in traffic on a hot day. If you don't melt, your bike will.

I can believe it! I did roads down south of Japan, that were quite a bit tighter than that, in a big 8 seater van. Thank god for aircon!
They're an interesting people, huh? They seem to follow every rule to the letter except for the speed limit. I don't think we saw more than 2 cops on our two week trip, again amazing after the roads here.
Bet you're hanging out for your baby to arrive. When it does there's plenty of good riding around here, like Transalper said, just go in any direction, apart from East unless your bike is amphibian.

Just a quick note to follow up what I mentioned on Tuesday about encoding video with your GPU.
Most likely it will either be through the nVidia Cuda (http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_home_new.html) or ATI Stream (http://www.amd.com/US/PRODUCTS/TECHNOLOGIES/STREAM-TECHNOLOGY/Pages/stream-technology.aspx) API's.
If you've got a recent nVidia card and Intel processor, try out Badaboom (http://badaboomit.com/). It's supposedly the best on the market. For owners of ATI/AMD cards, you can take a look at Cyberlink MediaEspresso (http://www.cyberlink.com/products/mediaespresso/overview_en_US.html). These are paid products.
The piece of freeware I used was the Freemake Video Convertor (http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/).
Hopefully this information will be useful to those riders who insist on having video evidence of their escapades. :scooter:

"The Summit Rd remains closed between Cavendish Saddle and the top of Rapaki Track. This closure is in place under the CERA legislation and significant penalties may occur if people are found within the cordoned area. This section of the road is under very high risk of rockfall and is also subject to remedial work making this a very unsafe area"

Hey kids,
I have some friends in town and we're lunching at about 11.30 or 12. I really want to be able to do both.
I was wondering if you lovely, and might I add very attractive, people would consider going slightly later, say meeting at 1 for a 1.30 depart?
That would mean we'd arrive in Tai Tap at about 2, listen to the band (who start at 1) once they've warmed up and we could all be home in time for afternoon tea and crumpet(s).
Even if it was a 1pm depart, I could possibly make that too but it would be a rush.
But if that's a hassle then don't worry about it, I'll just come and join you at the pub afterwards.

I could've been wrong about that section of road being closed. I have no idea about it's current state at all.
Also, I may be out for tomorrow. I seem to have run out of scratch this week :brick: and I still need to buy gas. Lucky I'm working locally next week and will only have to make 2 trips to town. If I'm not there by 1330 tomorrow, don't wait for me. I won't be coming:cry:

I can confirm the Summit Rd, Godley Head and even simply Evans Pass are not accessible at all from Sumner, the road is closed from the top Seaview Rd intersection, pretty much where the last houses are.
I actually really enjoy the roller coaster road out to Sumner at present.
Back on the other end it is also closed at the top of the Rapaki Road/Track if you ride it from Dyers Pass ~5km toward Sumner, but is nice and quiet up there now except a few cyclists and a wedding party with the odd car, ok it still has traffic but not as much as before. I went looking today while testing the latest maintenance I've done on the Transalp.
I'll probably do me own thing going earlier Sunday, I want to go further than Taitapu.

:pinch: I'm sorry I actually can't watch that, it made me a bit  like motion sickness which I get as a passenger in the car sometimes.
Actually some of Peeteeys do similar to me at times.
I played with pic in pic stuff and now don't bother unless it's for a special scene and for a short time. I think it's just too much happening on the screen at once.
When watching videos with two or more views I find I started to cover one and watch the other, then rewind an go again on the interesting bits I want to see in the other view... which is often shrunk to small to see properly.
If you use garbage mattes or Masks (can't remember which) and position other video in the window created by the matte(or mask) for best view of the bike behind or what ever, you do not have to shrink the video but will of course loose some off the sides, top and bottom depending how you position it.
But.... what I do now is take the two views and cut between one and other and the other other in this case but have each one use the full screen.
Well that's hopefully taken as constructive criticism, something to think about. I assume some people may in fact like it like you've done anyway.
and yes, fingers crossed, I should be in again if the forecast holds for Wednesday.... but where ??

Yea, I think that's the overall winner on the day for pretty much any video. The pic in pic is cool for a while or a scene but ultimately you can't beat simply switching from one cam to the next.
I've been wanting to do that in all my recent videos but with the arms protesting after editing for a while I need to just quickly bash the video out somehow without getting to fancy.
I think I've sussed a slightly easier way to get that result within my editor tho so will try it next time we all go out with cameras rolling.
All that being said, I really do like G's video, it looks different to most other bike vids out there and its a cool idea. I can watch it no worries and is a cool experiment and learning curve. Plus it adds to replayability. I've watched it several times to take in the different angles.
Bring on Wednesday! I think, out of three, I might have one working bike
The Kat did enjoy the ride on Sun but was making some strange noises I thought. Might just be that I haven't ridden it in ages and aren't used to them. Hope that's all it is!

I'll probably be out tonight, have run out of time! Might be able to meet you at the Blue Duck on your way past tho, will join up with you there if I make it on time, don't bother waiting tho in case I decide to flag.
Gotta see if any of the bikes are working!

Didn't end up heading over the hill. Noticed a front end whine not far from work this morning, I thought it must be the road surface or maybe a slow leak affecting tyre, but tyre pressure ok. Didn't think more of it till about to leave, and heading down the road it started up again. Sounds like a 4wd with knarly off road tyres driving on asphalt - a droney whine. I figured it could be slack chain or wheel bearing but after only 5K km I wouldn't have though the wheel bearings would be an issue. Checked chain and it was a tad slack, so headed home, but after tightening and lubing this is not the issue. Blardy thing.

If it starts happening, shift down through your gears or up through your gears. If it stops when you change into a gear (2nd for me) then you can be pretty sure its the gear box. Happens when the holes that feed oil to the "free" gears in the gear box clog up with oil and the gear starts shimmying around a bit. Annoying as hell but won't do any serious damage unless you leave it for a while.
The noise will stop when you change gears because the fixed gears will lock onto the free gears stopping it from happening. It will probably do it in neutral as well.
Only way to fix this is to pull the gear box apart and unclog the little holes.

Will try that but the noise builds with speed and stays the same even if you pull the clutch and coast, so I think it must be either the front tyre, wheel bearing or maybe the chain or front sprocket which is hidden behind a cover with other bits in the way. Will pull it apart on weekend and see if something comes to light

Try a different road surface ... a coarse chip seal perhaps ...

Was an interesting ride back think it was windier or felt like it coming out of the corners.

seems like ages since i've done a WNR - enjoyed the ride - wind and riding into the setting sun heading into corners....interesting..and can't fault the basket of fishy things at the pub!

Last time I had that I'd left out one of the rear brake caliper bolts after doing the clutch and the caliper had see-sawed the rear ABS sensor into the toothed sensor ring. Luckily had a spare bolt (pinched one from the centerstand) and sensor lasted the trip, but wasn't cheap.
Maybe speedo gears (if it's still mechanical), toothed sensor rings, stone in a brake caliper, stupid pad depth warning "finger" thing (that drags on the disk) if they have them on Jap bikes as well as cars.... hose against tyre, could be lots of things. Could you get the front end up and spin it with a drill chuck held up against the tyre?
(and don't forget to allow for cables etc moving when the front sags under load too).
Good hunting..

....Might be able to meet you at the Blue Duck on your way past tho, will join up with you there if I make it on time.....We didn't go past the Blue Duck, we came off Gebbies and turned left (2.9km short of the Blue duck) to the Little River Pub. Don't think anyone there had read your post before departing.
Was an ok ride and $10 for 2 Sasuages, 2 eggs and chips was a good tea for me.
Would have been warmer with out the wind I think and I agree it did seem worse on the way home (but still quite manageable).
Should have pulled that extra layer out and put it on before leaving the Pub.
On the way home I stopped to watch the sun set across Lake Ellesmere, it's a lot like watching it across the sea on the West Coast how the sun appears to grow as it reaches the horizon.

How is your speedo/tacho driven? Might be a cable or the actual unit itself then.

No little stones caught up in the brake calipar etc ? can make noises and damage discs without actually jamming anything.

Spotted! I was in Akaroa tonight and saw six or so v twin sport bikes rumbling through town- two Ducatis, a VTR, a SP1 (or 2) and an unidentified Suzuki. I was very jealous of you jokers- today was a superb day for a ride over the hill.

Just as well, or it would be pistols at dawn time :ar15: ;-)
Didn't mean to hijack the thread. All good suggestions, I lifted the front end tonight and removed and checked the calipers for stones (there did seem to be a lot of turning resistance with them on than I would have expected and a scraping sound) but everything looked in order, no stones still plenty of pad material, the disks themselves have some scoring lines. Max, great minds must think alike as I spun the wheel up with my drill before reading this, lol, and no noise with calipers off, and no rumble or movement from bearings. There is no speedo drive on the front wheel so presume that there is an electronic sensor on the drivetrain somewhere.
Ah well, will just have to eliminate one thing at a time.

Speaking of spotted, I thought I saw Larikin and possibly R1madness and a few others loitering around Linwood Ave Mcd's the other day ...
Was a quick glance tho but if it wasn't you then you guys have some doppelgängers ...

Yes you did. Isn't that what these threads are for.
How's the bike now???? I do hope this isn't a complication caused by your misadventure a while ago. That would really suck.
Unless it has been caused by you using the bike???? If you left it in the shed the way I do, it would never wear out!!!!:bs::whistle::wacko::innocent:

I wouldn't know one of you guys from any other rider on the road - as yet - so couldn't say if I passed any of you when I headed out to Arthur's Pass yesterday.
Those long straights are, well, awfully boring. All you can hope for is to catch up with a slow moving truck and get to overtake. And then hope there are none after Springfield.
Oh. There was a section between Springfield and Castle Hill that is being resurfaced. A kilometer or so. Had to poodle along to avoid dumping my bike in the loose gravel they has as a road surface. Would be fine for you "dusty butt" types. And I was a bit surprised at the number of 1-lane bridges on what is, essentially, a major highway.
And can cagers really not do those corners unless they are going under 70? Seems that my lean angle is inversely proportional to the posted corner speed. Except for the 35's and 45's. I do slow down a bit for those.
But boy! What great scenery!
