Yeah, If only I had my blaster, I would deal with those pesky corner cutters.
That sun strike was diabolical last night for sure, worst so far on the WNR.

Sunstrike was worst I've experienced in a while, I was real close to pulling over for 15 minutes or so to let it pass. At least we could see it coming.
In the end I did pull over several bends later partly just to watch the sunset.

Big thanks to the boys that stopped n helped me tonight after my wee slide over the train tracks. I'd like to thank the manufacturers of Spool leathers for my lack of major injuries. Main injury is my pride which I am currently healing with some bourbon. Bike got me all the way home, was interesting shifting without the whole lever, but got the hang of it in the end. Finally I'd like to say FUCKING GRIT! GRRRRR! THERE'S NO SNOW!

Ah shit, sorry to hear that. Grit sucks and so does the road maintenance in north Canterbury. They also put grit down (and sometimes sealing chip)on hot days to try to counteract the slippery flushed bitumen, but all it does is make life worse for us, especially when it builds up into windrows between the wheeltracks.
Some knob thought putting crusher dust down was a good idea in the waimak gorge last week, so you then get powdery fines and flushed bitumen and moisture as on Sunday afternoon, it was f'n scary coming back through there, slippery as dog sh!t
Hope you get the bike fixed up soon.

Yup that's where I was braking, right in the middle where the lovely cars and trucks had flung it. Caught me totally off guard one second I was applying the front brake, next second I'm sliding. Light conditions meant that it was pretty tricky to spot plus I was checking for trains and a thousand other things at the time.

Hi Guys , for the uninformed CBTA - Competency Based Training and Assessment is coming to town- so to speak. Its NZTA's new way of getting rider through the licencing system to a set standard - check out cbta.co.nz (http://www.cbta.co.nz) for more information.
Anyway I am going through the process to be registered to assess this (another string to my bow) and I need a couple of volunteers to be my guinea pigs and let me practice assessing before NZTA come along and do it. It is mainly so I can mark the riding faults someone makes in the correct boxes and I get to practice my route a bit more.
You won't officially pass/fail anything as I'm just practising so what is in it for me I can hear some of you saying??
Well, you get your riding assessed against the new standard and get to see how awesome you are really are!, you get some constructive feedback from me at the end (worth 100's of $$$!) and you get to ride out on your bike with me wittering in your ear telling you to turn left or right - now that really is worth a lot!!!!! - Oh and I might shout you a coffee too.
It would be ideal if the volunteers ( I need 2 or 3) are still on their learners or restricted (and on a bike they can legally ride) and probably by the looks of my overly full diary be free on a sunday afternoon and prepared to come up to Rangiora as that is where our first route will be starting from.( we will be doing routes from CHCH once we get the NZTA approval) Also needs to be before 24th Feb
Just email me duncan@2drivesafe.com if interested and available. I might be able to do one or two evenings between now and the 24th as well.
Thanks for the time in reading this

He certainly wasn't riding like a twat or anything that's for sure.

Well considering I've been riding for 5 years without an accident (ever) on some of the hairyiest roads NZ has to offer, I assure you I was equally surprised. TBH due to the straight nature of the road my concentration may have slipped, but I assure you if I had spotted the lovely patch of grit in the shadows of the trees, I wouldn't have gotten into the situation. But since you're the worlds greatest rider I'm sure none of this applies to you. Don't be so quick to judge. The boys that assisted me after the drop said it could have happened to anyone, I was just unfortunate enough to choose that spot to brake.
Think Forrest Gump ................... "it happens". I hope you and your bike are not too badly harmed. There are some stirrers out there who should be ignored.

Too true, being a State Highway there are national standards for maintenance of the roads and you could take the NZTA to task over this to try to recover any damages from them or the contractor, if they have breached the requirements and caused an unsafe road condition that was not placarded with warning signs etc.

Have you known anyone that has taken them on? Would love to hold someone accountable for the road condition. I blame myself primarily for not spotting the grit, but after looking at the gopro vid I'm not surprised due to the shadow cast over the road. Still would be good to hit them up cause at the end of the day you can't slip on something that isn't there in the first place.
Bike is in shop atm, will find out next week if the insurance company will write it off or not, did a fair amount of cosmetic damage due to the Oggy knob snapping off after digging in to the train track. That is all apart from a sprained rotator cuff on my left shoulder, which hurts like a b!tch haha.

Well it's a long story, but a couple of years ago a similar thing happened to me. I was commuting home from work in April, and it was going to be my last ride to work for the year as the rego was about to expire. Came back through a section of road that had been resealed earlier in the week, and the signs removed. But over the course of they day through trafficking and excess amount of chip being applied in the first place and not properly stuck to the bitumen, a windrow of loose chip had built up along the centreline and road shoulders. So I came through just on dark, and couldn't see it. Anyway as I moved to the centreline to turn right at the Y intersection, the front tucked under and I was on my ass before I knew it .
I had some broken ribs and landed on backpack with thermos flask in it.
The police attended and I got taken to hospital. The car behind me luckily saw me in the road and stopped. As it turned out, her battery went flat while I was being sorted out and when they tried to push the vehicle there was so much loose shit on the road they had trouble just getting it moving. This was all noted in the police report as the cause of the accident.
My plan was to take insurance and recover the balance and costs from the council, they blamed the maintenance contractor who denied any wrongdoing, and provided documentation showing their site supervisor has inspected and approved the site for removal of the signs .What it didn't account for was the poor application of the materials and the failure of the chip seal, and ongoing observation and maintenance of the road to a safe standard. It should have been checked and swept.
Anyway, I thought I had a pretty good case. Insurance paid up a current market value for the bike and depreciated value of my gear. I then started to organise a case to go to small claims court but got a call from the bike insurer to say that I had waived all my rights by accepting their payout, and that I must desist from taking any further action as it could jeopardise their claim, and that they would try to get a settlement for my other losses.
So I have been waiting and emailing ringing many times with no progress.
Based on this your claim would be against the Maintenance contractor who applied the grit and failed to clear it away. You would need some proof of what happened, written statements from witnesses etc. Anyway, discuss it with your insurer before accepting a payout, that you want to claim your excess and any losses / costs back.
I have changed insurers now, because of all this. And am now on the Vero Golightly scheme - hopefully I do not have to use it though!

Duvauchelles anyone?? Hopefully without windrows of grit!!!!
BK, Dyers Pass, through Governors Bay, Gebbies Pass, first regroup on Millers Road just before the Akaroa Hiway. On to Little River second regroup at the old railway station. At Duvauchelles if the pub is busy we may turn back and have the final regroup at the Little River Pub.

Seems crashes are quite frequent on these night rides due to the limited ability of bike lights to light up hazards like cars can so why not ride during the day and the problem would be solved?

I finally get a week off work and think I'll be able to get along to a ride. Then I drop my KLR on my ankle while playing at the river and now it hurts to ride.
Hey Shoshoni, did I see you riding down the west side of Porters Pass on Sunday? I'd have been riding up it with a grey gladius close behind me. I'm pretty sure I recognised your bike.

No camera's, two bike's in front of the camper van indicating for the right turn into Millers Rd coming back into town.
The camper van was also indicating to the right, at first I thought he was going to follow Glo and the other rider but then the idiot overtook them on the intersection.

Not sure about where and how at the moment. Was called the other day about looking after the engineering at a local company there and I said I was interested.
Will probably just live in the caravan for a short while until we sort out the details. The company has had a couple of staff leave and their engineer is also not well. I can't see me living with Mum as we live quite different lifestyles, but I might park the caravan on her lawn in Cashmere.
Hey Peeteey I can now play a mean base, but my left hand has developed rheumtism in a couple of fingers which limits how long I can play.

Oh dear, it wasn't some Seth Afriken prick in little white sh!tbox? I had a similar thing happen before xmas where a car started weaving erratically as I was going past causing me to swerve to avoid the mad bastard. I got well ahead but was fuming so I turned around and tailed him when I saw him turn off, when he stopped I pulled up and told him what I thought of him and his driving antics. He had the cheek to say he would report my riding to the police! In all the years of riding and overtaking I have never experienced a reaction like this to being passed.
On the horn note, I got one of the SickSpeed (loud) horns off ebay at Xmas but it was too large a diameter to fit anywhere on the bike, so it is now on the Chev, it is much much louder than the stock bike horn. BEEP BEEP lol.

Anyone interested in taking the short cut through the licencing system ( from L-R without the 6 months wait and from R-Full at 12 months instead of 18 months) flick me an email info@2drivesafe.com.
Starts from march 1st - though I'm booked up that day.

Pleasant ride out but for the wind and the sunstrike!
My bag of crisps did not quite replace the expected Pizza, I wonder if the one pizza that was ordered got shared.
Quite enjoyed the night ride home. I have a new uprated main bulb, makes a big difference, high beam hardly added any benefit - perhaps why got flashed once or twice.
Good to meet some new bikers, I've always put off joining your rides, might see you again.

Everyone else has already heard me on this .... :)
Put a strip of black electrical tape across your visor, just above your normal line of sight. Sun - dip head slightly, Tape is nice 2 ways - if gets manky or not working for you, no hassle to just pull off. Also, thin enough that you can see where the sun is through it so when it does pop out (cornering, other strange head manouevers) you know where NOT to be looking :P

I think the reason why it distorted on the open road was the mike was picking up a lot of road noise which you had to speak over. If your helmet was more insulated from road noise this would be a help as you would not have to speak so loud...
Yep, pretty much but it distorts if I'm talking or not, it's the wind and road noise that's the problem. The main issue is that the camera doesn't seem to reduce it's recording volume when the noise gets too loud and thus it clips/distorts.
I don't have the mic for me to be able to gabber on, it's to be able to hear the engine noise.
The camera's audio with it's built in mics is terrible at speed, just a hiss of wind, no engine at all. I put the external mic in the helmet to as some layer of noise reduction.
I've got a few other mics for testing with the Sony on the way as the one I'm using is cheap but really I'm gonna focus on getting the new sound recorder set up properly so I can use it with a good manual setting with no clipping. I won't use a mic as the built in ones are professional quality, I just need to figure out the correct settings :)

he just left the mic plug showing under edge of seat and used an extension from there to camera, that way he could unplug when getting off the bike. He also said if he came off it would just unplug without causing damage. (he hoped)

Good idea, I used to do something similar with my old camera setup but for the power. I ran the camera from the bike's battery and used RCA connectors for the same reason, they'd just unplug should I go flying :)
But I really want to get away from cables everywhere. If I can find a mic that the Sony camera likes then I'll just use that, the new Zoom sound recorder is great for engine noise but it's another bit of kit that I have to muck round with.

lol good to see it's well and truely embedded in some peoples memory now.
Enough gas in ya tank for a good 60km from Carpark to Valley inn and then to the closest garage might be an advantage to riders too. Nice short ride so everyone be ok without checkin aye. Pitty the temperature didn't reach yesterdays estimate for today but a city ride home for most will limit the chill factor after dusk.
