Reckon we head to Aka for the next ride, make the most of the long daylight evenings (ie bigger ride)... tea there aka .... and to keep everyone happy back over the hill in daylight...and stop for a beer/wine at taitapu pub..... then its easy run home in the dark.
If weather not to flash, shorter circuit and back to taitapu pub ,as everyone knows their food pretty darn good too:yes:

Sounds great I'll be along at this stage.

I'm up for another Wednesday ride, warning though, those sharp corners do have me going slower:scooter:

You will be fine, just take your time as you won't be that far behind.

Nice relaxing ride tonight, going to have to practice those tight bends, but the night was mild and no wind which made it very enjoyable. Thanks for the company, with the smaller crowd it was good getting to know the few of you that showed :woohoo:

Hey Jen, great riding last night. You kept to your own pace and took your time, which was nice to see, then all of a sudden you were filling my rear mirrors! :D
That's a gorgeous bike, I hope you hang onto it when you upgrade. Looks very classic, the back reminded me of the old BMW stylings ...

I peeled off and went home half way, my DR is not the nicest bike for the longer rides but was great fun throwing it round those corners again, been collecting dust for too long.
I also put the beemer back together and took that for a quick spin too once I got back, so comfy!

See y'all next week I hope

Had a wee sit on my bike yesterday and my knee was a little sore :cry:so will have to watch what I'm doing. 250 will hopefully be back on the road next week, have to get her organised for selling, so if anyone is looking for a lovely wee 250, I'm going to be selling mine!!

I enjoyed our little squirt over the hill.
Agree that bike of yours is a keeper,
and will not take much to make her look sweet as.
You road skills dont look too bad either, I have seen much worse on a Wed night ride.
Looking forward to the next ride , your ability will improve the more you ride.

These things take time......

I guess you've figured out that with a learners you get a fine, with no licence you're on your way to having your bike seized?

Nope, those things although relevant I dont ride like an idiot around town,
and I feel that without a license I was more cautious about how I acted had nothing to do with why I have taken my time
It was more to do with timing,
my car license is up for renewal this year, and I have timed it to coincide with me getting my bike license,
If I had known of the changes that are coming up this year,
I would have done it earlier.
But hell, None of us know what the government
is going to do next
AS for fines? well, put them on my tab,

With the advent of Demerits added into the equasion ... loss of licence is more of a risk ...

Only after failure of the attitude test is the vehicle impounding (usually) applied (or the cop is bored) as the cop usually has to wait for the towie to arrive before he/she can leave to complete their quota ...

Back on subject where to???

I haven't seen those guys in years even tho one of them must live just round the corner from me, I see their car with D&D advertising on it all the time ...
Where to indeed. I'm keen for anywhere but maybe not a long ride. Been thinking lots about while our group is not too big to go off exploring new places we haven't been to before. For example, every time I ride past Pegasus I'm really tempted to pop in and stare at all the strange people ...

As an idea, what about Dyers, round the summit road to Gebbies then round to the Gov Bay pub for a change?

Definitely a starter for that route Pete, and yup Jen, more practice on the hills,
the summit road south end is good for it, narrow and winding, not a fast road, but a fun one.

I appreciate the offer but thats a tad small. Im not buying 4 new indicator bulbs for a bike that I dont own (current bulbs are all 24W bulbs in the Trident).

If they were 9W bulbs I'd just swap the Cagiva flasher unit between the bikes as its a 30 second job.

Hi out there in Kiwi Biker world - we have some spaces left on our heavily ACC subsidised training courses this weekend for new and experienced riders alike.

Both courses cost only $50 each for four hours of small group training

Slow pro (Sunday)is for those wanting to improve their slow riding skills essential in chch peak hour traffic, emerging intersections, filtering through traffic and generally looking like you know what you are doing when you pull up at the lights! We also cover emergency braking technique and some evasive techniques for when that car driver breaches your right of way( like they do every day!) We do this off the road on a big car park and is lots of fun as well as good learning.

Kick-start (Saturday) is for those just completed their basic handling skills test and want to move on with their new bike and get to grips with it on the road in a controlled and helpful way with an instructor rather than a friend. Covering basic gear changes, positioning, cornering and counter-steering among other things. Maybe you know a nube who could benefit?

We have other courses for more experienced rider you also may be interested in.

Call us now on 0508 863 748 or visit our page for more info (http://www.2drivesafe.com/html/mb/training.html) and book today - these subsidies wont last long!

I think it will work then, I'm assuming 2x23W means 2 23W bulbs, and you only have 2 going at a time.

I tested it last night to make sure it works on a 50W halogen and it was fine.

Give me a yell if you want to try it, not too worried as it came off my sons GSXR250 carcass that's sitting in the shed.

Ooh, cheers for mentioning it in this thread, since my bike's been off the road I've only been having a quick glance at this thread every now and then, and had missed the main one.
I think I'll probably pop along in the car for a catch-up, sadly it's been way too long. On the bright side, it looks like I may finally be done paying all the rates, plumbers etc that have been taking all the money I'd rather be spending on my bike, so with any luck I'll be able to get longwheely to fix it all up for me sometime in the next coupla weeks and get riding again. :woohoo:

Well, according to the WOF inspection it failed, it needs fork seals, front brake pads, rear wheel bearings, muffler mount bush, battery, and some minor work on the muffler mount and side stand.
Damn thing's been off the road ever since the WOF expired back around July last year, I've just been waiting till I had enough spare cash to get it fixed.
So yeah, I'm seriously looking forward to getting it back on the road - not riding for that long has seriously sucked.

Crap man, that surely does suck. Hope it doesn't cost you to much to get it sorted.

You could probably do a lot of the work yourself to if you have the tools. You'll learn a lot about the bike also.

Yeah, I'm hoping it won't be too much - once that's done I need to save up to get the rego off hold and sit my full license test.

I did briefly consider trying to do some of it myself, but while changing the battery is trivial and I could probably handle fitting new brake pads, I don't really know enough to do the rest, and my tool collection is pretty much limited to stuff you need to work on computers and electronics, so I'd be lacking most of the tools I'd need.

I might go ahead and do the battery and have a go at the brake pads, but I think I'll just leave the rest in Ian's capable hands - when I first got it he sorted it out for me at a great price.

I am kind of hoping something along the lines of the old wednesday night maintenance meetings during the winter start up again at some point though - they finished before I started hanging out here, but it seems like a great way to learn more about bikes and get to a point where I'd be comfortable doing more of the maintenance and work on my own bike, and I'm sure plenty of other new riders would also find them useful.

4 of us had a nice quiet cruise up to the Summit, down Gebbies and out to Little River for lunch.
Lot's of traffic on the flat.
When we left for home I went 'the other way' which was really nice and quiet (hardly any traffic) until somewhere near Teddington.
Western Valley Road is really nice right now too, more dirt than gravel. :wings:

I think you are probably a little taller than me Jax, tippy toes is not a bad thing, just set myself up well, i.e. aware of small stones on a metal surface etc :)

Even when I'm running back empty in truck and trailer , I have to watch it if there is drizzle or light rain , on some of those sections , very easy to slide and have brake lock ups on trailer.

The trailer units of trucks can drag any loose stuff from the road edge. So the stones aren't always only between the wheel tracks.

Heading south ... trucks with trailers pull hard to the left to get more clearance for their trailers to turn into the tunnels. NOT to allow bikes/cars to pass. Dont get caught out ... the drivers will be looking ahead. Not in the mirrors.

How is voicing an opinion on service being Grumpy ? Did it ever occur that if the service was there this post would not exist ?

Whats big deal of owning a K5 , anyone can pick one up on tardme for 3 to 5 grand any day of the week, hardly a 1930's Harley.

CeeJay bit more study needed - a dirty 5 is a MX bike and there would be no point in fitting indicators when they are unable to be registered.

Front wheel locked under braking into the corner, bike is new, only 225k on the clock , so the brakes were grabby as,

D:cool:

Seems now would be an appropriate time to recommend Duncan's courses. The intermediate course Torque was great and I'll be doing Apex in a few weeks. Hope to see some of you there!

She looks really good all clean and shiny :niceone:

My Charlotte loved meeting everyone and really enjoyed the day, as did wee Ryder (He wanted a go on that Trumpy! lol)
as for cameras!...don't get me started!...the new HD camera is dead!, previous owner didn't tell me the USB plug was broken!, went to plug it in and the actual plug just fell off the circuit board!...so now the camera is dead:wait: (no wonder I got such a good deal)...some people!

what did you put on front?

nothing, still origi, I lowered the pressure 2lb, and learnt that i need to use the rear brake more.
Its not a sports tourer, so loading the front up is asking for disaster,
Would not matter what tire I put on the front,
trying to turn the wrong way will mean kissing the ground again,
so its adapt to a different style of bike .
Oh and because the weight on the front is not as much as bigger bikes,
takes a heap to scrub the fucker in.

Christchurch Wednesday Maintenance Evenings

Wayne (Wofman) has very kindly consented to allow us to run the WMEs again. A very big :2thumbsup:2thumbsup to Wayne.

At this stage we are looking at the first Wednesday of each month starting in May. 2nd May after 6pm Gloucester Motors corner of Gloucester St and Fitzgerald Ave.

Simple things such as oil changes, valve clearances, the lots of little small things which can mean the difference between a good ride and being stopped on the side of the road.

If you have anything that you would like covered please PM Wayne or me and we will try to oblige. Bearing in mind that we will be limited to an hour or so each night.

I will not start a new thread for the WME but will continue to use this one.

And please support Wayne at Gloucester Motors for your WOFs and vehicle maintenance, he is one of us!!!!

Nothing to be sorry about M8 !

I use to service the lift at the PGC building many moons ago, building had a look that it had never been finished - a rushed job, always
bits of cement powder in the stairwell like the cement was breaking down (This was over a decade ago) Earnest Young building next door looks like it has never been in an earthquake, lives and limbs lost when it should have been condemned a long time ago. (Hindsight wonderful thing though eh - who would ever have thought we would have quakes in the first place)

Think a lot of it is hitting home now since do not have to deal with as many shakes etc, that coverage on 60 minutes other night was beyond sad, going to watch when a city falls on tv3 at 7.30 tonight.

Due to the forecast for tonight over the days would not be surprised if ya ended up being the only one in the BK carpark.

There was a beer festival at Riccarton Bush in the weekend just been where I spent and drank way to much (totally worth it at the time). Jumped on the push bike to head home and well didn't quite make it. I dont remember anything about the crash but from what I can figure from my injuries, I probably wobbled the front wheel into the gutter and curbed it.

There is no damage to my hands so I think I must have decided to go down with the ship so to speak (never let go of the handlebars until I hit the ground). Bounced off my left hip (bloody good bruise that one!), and and left shoulder (broken collar bone) and rolled over probably once to scrape my right elbow and ankle a wee bit. Finished up on my back in a garden. Woke up to a lady on the phone to an ambulance and got to spend the night in the hospital.

Not a bad weekend really.

Can't get done EBA on a push bike over here, so you'll be fine. Just don't do anything stupid like wobble all over the road, ride without a helmet, ride without lights at night, run red lights etc and the cops can't do anything to you.

If someone were to be swerving all over the road because they're too pissed to be riding in a straight line then they can be taken into custody for detox, but not charged for EBA. It's the same as if someone is walking on the sidewalk but they're too drunk to walk properly.

I haven't been able to find any law in NZ which states something to the effect of "thou shalt not ride a pushbike on a public road whilst intoxicated". I've had this argument with plenty of people before, but none of them have been able to provide me with evidence of any such legislation.

A Bicycle is a vehicle. Just as a horse is. Drunk in charge of a vehicle (on a public road) is apparently against the law. Falling off the bike (or horse) at the cops feet is sufficient evidence for breath testing/arrest...

Even walking drunk in a public place (not always on a road) is enough for a drunk and disorderly charge. Although some police use their descretion at such times ... and just lock them up for detox. (Some ... may take them home if the attitude test is passed)

A bicycle is not a motor vehicle though. I have looked at the NZTA website regarding EBA and I can't see anything which explicitly states that the rules apply to cyclists as well.

One can be arrested for disorderly behaviour for cycling intoxicated in a public place, but if you can show me sufficient evidence to prove that a person can be charged with EBA for riding a push bike drunk on a public road, then I am willing to keep an open mind and have a look at it.

I don't want to hear "a friend of a friend got busted one night for riding his push bike home drunk from a party" or other such here-say with no credible evidence to substantiate such claims.

I never said MOTOR vehicle ... Dont confuse yourself. A bicycle is a vehicle. Plain and simple. EVEN for YOU.

Look it up ... Dictionary definition...

1. any means in or by which someone travels or something is carried or conveyed; a means of conveyance or transport

Funny ... no mention of a motor being required ...

Looks like you are right Smokeu, it seems the act applies to motor vehicles only.

Supprisingly enough ... not all rules are in the same segment of the act ...

Scroll up a bit ... to here ... it is a Transport act. Not a Motor Vehicle act.

moving vehicle offence means an offence detected by approved vehicle surveillance equipment that is—

(a) a speeding offence; or

(b) an offence in respect of the failure to comply with the directions given by a traffic signal; or

(c) any offence against regulations made under this Act or the Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1986 that is declared by regulations under this Act to be a moving vehicle offence for the purposes of this definition; or

(d) a toll offence

novice driver has the meaning specified by the rules

offence against this Act includes an offence against or prescribed by the regulations

operate, in relation to a vehicle, means to drive or use the vehicle on a road, or to cause or permit the vehicle to be on a road or to be driven on a road, whether or not the person is present with the vehicle; and operator has a corresponding meaning

Jeepers nothing like opening up a hornets nest re DIC on a bike.

Reason I raised it was not to take the piss out of spuds or anyone else but just incase monkey see monkey do
when their could be implications - loss of licence - who wants that ? What people do their biz, I've had a few in my early years and ridden on a pushie, motorbike, driven a car.

Think it comes down to the police look at it that you could cause an accident, someone swerves to avoid ya wobbling all over the place and into a parked car or pole, pedestrian they go.

See ya's at BK - be there all be square :D

I also went to the beer festival by bicycle and imbibed too much beer and spent too much money. I then went to a party and continued to consume alcohol.

Sunday morning I wake up (at home). No idea how I got there and I'm yet to find my bicycle, somewhat strangely I have no bruises.

Best of luck with the recovery dude.

Fark, I'd hate to think what would happen if you went to a pizza festival then .... :wari:

Yes thanks Jen, four of us had a very nice lunch and an equally pleasant chat session. The ride was slightly damp on the way over but that's what we have wet weather gear for. Akaroa was glorious as usual.

Was she swerving back into the middle of the road again after you had passed her? Need a longer video to see for sure but it sure looked like she was trying to get herself taken out by the second motorcyclist
