Don't know about the rest of you but I might drop in to see Mark and Cathy at the Little River Pub on the way back. With my air cooled engines I prefer to let them cool down a bit after the climb up to Hilltop.
Anyway, BK, Gasson and Colombo, Dyers Pass, round the bays to Gebbies Pass, Millers Rd 1st left after Gebbies, 1st regroup end of Millers Rd near SH 75 (road to Akaroa), on to Akaroa. If you want a second regroup tell me at BK and we will have it at the old Rittle Liver railway station (I might need a pit stop).

Good to see you guys last night.:2thumbsup:2thumbsup I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and avoided :Police::Police: on the way home.
My Italian dropped the earth line off the battery :bash::bash: Montreal/St Asaph on the way home. (No it isn't on video) I pushed to Montreal/Cashel where I felt totally:buggerd: and started taking bits off. (Yes Max the light did work) After taking a nut and screw off the number plate holder, the Italian decided to go again:scooter::scooter:.
Anyway next WNR PIZZA again anyone

Hey lovely Christchurch people, does anyone have a spare fridge we could borrow for a few days around the 28th Dec? Anything would be a help but medium to large even better!
Getting married you see, need space and refrigeration for food for families coming to stay.
Love you long time ...

So are we on for pizza tonight? I don't finish work until 630 so I'll be leaving Rangiora around 7. Which means I'll probably see you all at the pub.
Is anyone meeting in Woodend like last time? If you guys are, I'll be sure to swing by just in case the main bunch hasn't gone past yet.
Sorry Pete, Can't help you out with a fridge.

;-) good man, we'll get you over to the dark side yet ...
I've still got the DR which I keep woffed and safe, Transalper's WR ditto, the rest of us were on Dirt bikes.
I can't really use the DR for the scrambly type stuff anymore which is why I got the KDX. Extremely light and grunty but you do need a trailer. (dear Santa ...)
Do tell about the Popo ...

I keep my DRZ400 road legal, I'm not really a motocross type so it does everything I need it to do off road, I got it to replace my off road only XL250 because I got sick of having to transport it places to go for a ride.

Going from dedicated off road CRF to the both worlds WR250R was one of the best moves I've ever done. There are trade offs all over that decision but for the slightly more weight gained by road stuff and electric leg (which I had on the CRF anyway) to be able to go off the trail on to road and on to more trail further on really opens up the possabilities. Eg. Waimak single track, exit to Darfield for a pie and back... or no worries about popping out of the Waipara river on to seal when lost or short of time.
Edit: should also say that when riding with the others on dedicated OR bikes it is still nice to Van out sometimes to save tyres or so that I'm not Trail riding in ADV clothes dealing with the long cold highway slog home and hot trails in the same trip.

So which was it?...
lol, bit of both, been a long time and was having a few issues choosing the best path the nearer the Pub we got. When we did get to the Pub the rest of the ADVers had gotten tired of waiting and left. I caught them up by shortcutting the next bit.
edit: I'm very keen to do some better exploring both up and down stream based from the Waipara Pub soon.

Funny, I was going to post the same thing.
From what I can remember from quite a few years ago it should be good upstream from the pub to at least stringers bridge, maybe back down the road, no main road riding required to complete the loop for those less road legal people .
Probably should continue this discussion in the adv thread......

Well, that was a fairly fun ride, although it turned out a little eventful for my taste.
I forgot my backpack in the pub, so turned back a few km out of Oxford. Then I ran out of gas just as I was turning onto Minchins rd, and had to flick it to reserve, then ran out again about 28km later, tipped the bike over to the left to move the fuel over to the petcock side and ran out for the final time 800m shy of the Old West Coast rd/West Coast rd intersection. After my flatmate came with a fuel can and I'd put a litre or two in, I found my headlight had stopped working - high beam worked fine, but low beam, nothing, which made the 8km final stretch back home rather interesting.
On the bright side, going through the electrics will give me something to do tomorrow. :)

It appears to have been a loose connection in the nest of wiring above the headlight - after poking around while doing some other stuff I noticed it'd started working again, and while I had a go at trying to find where the issue was by prodding and pulling various bits of wiring, I couldn't get it to stop working again.
Ah well, it works now, and if it ever crops up again I know roughly where to look, if it does it again I'll do a more thorough job of going through the wiring.

If you ever get the time and the inclination might pay to replace that part of the wiring. It would suck to loose your headlight suddenly going into a bend at night just because you twisted the bars just the right way...

Completely normal for old Trumpys
I had a 71 trident that used to blow EVERY bulb at once for no apparent reason...heaps of fun at night...POOF!...no lights...no dash..and no clean undies! (And it was the model with conical hubs!...you get to use the brakes 3 times...and ONLY 3 times before they over heat lol)
And +1...fix it!...sparky problems are buggers to find...but much easier to do so in the garage...than on the side of the road!:niceone:

Hmmn, these are some good points, I'll have another poke around. I'm hoping the issue is a loose connection where the headlight wires connect to the headlight plug, in which case it'll just need a quick resolder, because if it's in the big run of wiring running back to the rest of the electrics beneath the seat it'll be a freaking nightmare to find and fix.

If its just a big run of wire, just replace the whole lot.
Way easier than trying to find the break in the wire.

When I say a run of wire I mean pretty much every wire in the entire damn bike, probably a good 20m or so worth.
Turns out the problem was in fact at the socket though - the wire had snapped inside it's insulation at the point it crimps into the h4 socket, so depending which direction it was being pushed or pulled it wasn't making a connection.
Unfortunately to fix it properly I need a new H4 female socket, and those don't appear to be so easy to find - I can't find anywhere in NZ that has them listed online.
In the meantime I can just solder the wire onto the old crimp connector and jam it back in, but it looks like I might have to order a plug from the states if I want to fix it properly. :(

Canterbury Auto Electrical service LTD 159/161 Waterloo road Hornby, go there and for about $6 you can get a new plug with connectors, You can also get plug sets, in 2/3/4/5/6/7/8/ wire plugs, male with female set, which are great for repairing looms.
A point, soldered joints are NOT as long lasting as crimped joints. A soldered joint will flex and break in the vibrational environment of a bike, Always use crimped joints for repairs, other wise you will get the ""Lucas Lord of Darkness"" gremlin invade your electrics.

Awesome, thanks for that, I'll pay them a visit tomorrow.
I decided that since it'd replace the plug anyway, I'd chuck a headlight relay kit in, and I was going to solder the wire onto the old connector until that arrives, but for a few bucks for a new connector, I may as well do it properly even in the short term.
I realize soldered connections won't hold up as well as crimped ones in a vibration-heavy environment, it just would've been for a temporary connection.
I've been getting some good use out of some posi-lock and posi-twist (http://www.posi-lock.com/) connectors I grabbed a week or so back out of curiosity, they're so much easier than crimping, and you can just undo and redo them if you need to make changes.

BK, Moorhouse, Fitzgerald, Hills, Marshland. First regroup as usual, Old Main North Road just before the Motorway onramp. Folk from the north of town may want to join up here. Anyone further north, Rangiora etc, is more than welcome to join up along the way. Motorway etc, second regroup as usual Amberley truckstop opposite "Z" servo.
Last time we went it was suggested by the manager that because there could be some delay we preorder our pizzas by phone. If anyone wants to I will do this at BK at about 6.15pm.

I've been finding them bloody brilliant - so much quicker and easier than crimping, and if you need to undo them for any reason it's a matter of a few seconds to undo them and do them back up. I've got 10 of the posi-locks, 3 of the posi-twists and a posi-tap on the bike at the moment, mostly for the Vapor and dash unit, along with a few for the headlight, and putting all 13 of those connectors on was quicker than the two crimped butt connectors I'd put on before I found the posi-lock stuff.
The only place I've found in NZ that stocks them is fastbikegear.co.nz (http://www.fastbikegear.co.nz/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=481&zenid=b5d16068424607d01c90d2f84842b2ad), but their pricing is actually cheaper than the manufacturers online shop, at least for the multi-packs, and their shipping is very quick.

I was thinking about suggesting we do a similar run but backwards, ending up in Lyttelton. There are some nice places to stop/eat/drink there and I think Freeman's has $15 pizza and pasta Mon-Thurs, and an outside area for general malarkying.
So how about we go round the outside of the hills to Gebbies Pass (or go up Dyers then Summit rd to gebbies), then around the bays to Lyttelton and stop there? Something a little different just for shits and giggles. :wari:

Nice one Peeteey, as we were riding along the Scargill Valley road and I saw that awesome sky I was wishing I'd brought along my GoPro, but since I'm far too lazy to actually edit or do anything with the footage afterwards, so this is much better. :msn-wink:
The IS on that Sony really is incredibly effective, it really gives it a kinda surreal quality - it looks like you're just floating along a few cm above the road or something, gives quite the contrast when you switch back to the GoPro.

I'd be down for that, I think the best way is probably going around the outside of the hills via the old Tai Tapu road, then over Gebbies and around the bays back to Lyttleton - up Gebbies, up the Summit rd, down Dyers and around the bays is also an option, but on my current tyres, I'd prefer the first option.

Yes SB. Will do it WNR after next. I went over the Summit Road yesterday on a "training run". The long grass on the sides of the road had just been cut and was spread on parts of road, made for an "interesting" ride.
If anyone is interested I might be persuaded to ride on the odd Friday night after work. I need some challenging roads to regain some of my riding skills.

It was the bakery at the north end of the shopping area that had the second fire. Not the fish in chip shop. I personally dont think the new shop has the quality product the old shop had. I was dissapointed with the last feed I had there.
Glowplug, Fir night can be good, but I do it on a friday arvo, less traffic on the ride up the hill.
Will pass on Gretta, do enough long straight road rides to rallys ..prefer the short commute to the hills and then the corners on the Keeway. Long roads are not as enjoyable.

Maybe not a go, there is a sign at marleys hill which says the summit road is closed to gebbies pass from 7am to 7pm for road works for Le Race.
Have rung the number twice to try and get more info as we go up there for work, but nobody at the other end seems to know anything about it, so may be road works, may be no road works, or anything in between such as new seal and loose gravel.

I came over Dyers tonight and I did notice a sign saying something about roadworks or closure of side road. At the point they had the sign, a side road was some several hundred feet up or down the cliff so I just thought they were barmy, maybe it meant the summit?

Although I'm on a litre bike I don't ride fast. It's not about how fast you can ride but who you ride with.
I got pinged by cops yesterday on the way from hanmer springs so... I'll slow down tonight.
Good ride tonight. Never knew that part of summit road existed. Some slip and slide here and there, bumping over cattle stop.
See you guys after winter.

I was with you till westmoreland (just after cashmere road hits 70k). Hit the horn and waved but i guess my womanly horn wasn't up to the challenge
If there's a day with some good weather please flick me a message, always keen for a ride.

Once the Skull Candy earphone go in and helmet on I can't hear much even my own horn which is about 115db.
And yes I can still hear Emergency Vehicles just not much else.

hey guys, moving to chch soon and buying a bike. When I lived in Auckland they had a ride on Wednesday nights that stopped at an empty car park where we would practice various skills for 30min or so then head off to a pub. anything like that happen in chch or does it all stop through winter?

Welcome to South Island. You must be talking about NASS for new/ learner riders. Unfortunately Canterbury riders go into hybernation in winter :cold:

I will be selling my car so my missus can get one and I can get a bike again. It will be all I use to get around, come hell or high water haha. Will def be keen to get a ride or something started up as I don't want to waste those beautiful calm sunny winter mornings on the weekends.

Sounds good. Could make this one for Saturday 11th May, doing our usual via Waikari and Scargill Valley. As it will be daylight both ways we could do Scargill Valley on the way back too.:2thumbsup:2thumbsup
