Thanks Gary
Big :niceone:up for Wayne doing this for us again this winter:first:

I second that Graham :2thumbsup :2thumbsup:2thumbsup:2thumbsup

At this stage we are thinking of the first Wednesday of the month to run these on. Any more frequently and they tend to loose their sparkle.

I was thinking of Speights Bealey for afterwards. However if anyone has a better idea lets have it because I'm not precious about Speights if there is a better place. :drinknsin:drinknsin As long as I can get some chips I'm happy.

You guys and gals who are going for a ride next Wednesday have a good time and :ride::ride: safely!!!

Nice pic, I've been collecting sunrise pics in christchurch, from that maybe I should also do the sunsets lol

now that I"ve rudely interrupted...the ulysses St John ride...any more details to that. I'd love to go for a decent ride on Wednesday and if there is a good cause involved then even better!

Cheers Jen, they have quite a different quality of light huh? Plus, you don't have to get up early!

I think the ride on Wed will be very sedate and chilled, from all reports from last time. Afterwards, I'm sure there will be plenty of people keen for a ride. I'm hoping to go along too.

I'm definitely up for a good ride, the last time I got a good ride in was Easter Monday and ended up doing Lewis Pass and Arthurs Pass. It was a good ride to and from Greymouth :Punk:

Hi Jen, the Ulysses ride leaves around 12pm from the south city car park. The badges are cash only and there are usually more than a few good raffles

Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a bind and hoping some of you kind folks can help me out.

Next Saturday I'm taking one of my good friends to his wedding on the back of a big shiny cruiser that I've borrowed.

However there are 2 other groomsmen that I didn't think about. I have one friend lined up to ride my wee CM400 cruiser with one of them on the back and I'm looking for someone else who owns a nice shiny bike, preferably a cruiser as it might end up in some photos(but at this point, I'll take anything), to transport the 2nd.

More than happy to put some beers/cash up for motivation.

You'd probably need to be in Rangiora by 3, the wedding is at 4 with photos until maybe 530. If you couldn't do the photos that wouldn't be an issue.

PM me or send me a txt 027 251 9002 if you think you could help me out.

We figured they turned right instead of left at the pass.
We could see their lights coming down summit road from the pub but they never turned up. We went back via Summit Rd to make sure they didnt come off but didnt see anything.

What time is the St John ride? I cant imagine I'll make it as I have uni, but if I can meet up with everyone after I'd be keen on a beer and tall stories about adventures involving motorcycles.

I should clarify that I didn't mean the St John's one, not such a fan of those massive rides. Too many people to be comfortable. But I will be out and about on the shingle during the day I think, and will be at the Moorhouse carpark.

Gammaguy, it'd be good to see you in person! Spuds, I would move the very earth to see you there. Maybe not the earth. I would move myself. Pete, have a good ride, hope you're still rocking the camera everywhere!

They have no authority to charge you money to ride on a public road.

Gareth123
23rd April 2012, 04:37
Perhaps instead of doing the St Johns ride, we could organise a meet up at BK Moorhouse at say 1130. That gives the ones who want to donate an hour to go down and flick St Johns a few bob, collect a badge and then get to BK.

What do you guys reckon?

bittertwistedcute
23rd April 2012, 09:26
They have no authority to charge you money to ride on a public road.

That is the badge money, which along with the raffle money, is donated to St John, this year it goes to the ashburton branch

Our ambulance service is not fully funded, and needs the graces of volunteers and donations

:scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scoo ter:

I don't like riding in large groups, the ride is split up into small groups with a Ulysses rider, well historically anyway

And some people just donate because they can, no one is going to tip you upside for a tenner ;)

well, I am so insecure about riding in big groups of riders who have been riding in groups for many years that I will meet at BK with a group of learners who have only been on the road a matter of days in comparison and ride with them because they are going to be so much safer and organized than the Ulysses club who have done this for many years this insecurity I will boast about so will gladly avoid large group ride to ride with learners and noobs!

I will be riding with the dangerous group from South City
I will give my $10 donation and receive a badge
I will ride to little river and spend some time at the event there
I will also be riding on tho Akaroa if the weather is good
If I an riding at a pace that is slow when you catch up with me, then pass me and keep going
If I am riding at a pace that I catch up with you I will pass you and keep going
I ride to what I think is correct for the conditions.

See you at South City, Little River or Akaroa if the sun is shinning.

The main things are to enjoy the day, have fun, and be a safe rider, all three are up to you as an individual

Im probably going to get shit for this:
Anyone heading back over Gebbies Pass towards town might have noticed that dodgy patch of gravel on the corner before the hairpin, well it got the best of me. I ended up low siding and spinning of into the fence.
The bike isnt damaged too badly and was able to ride it home but it will still cost a bit to fix.
Someone who was nice enough to pull over who lived a little down the road seemed to believe a gravel truck had spilled some of its load there the day earlier.
I rang *555 and reported it but im wondering if you all think its worth chasing after the council for not keeping the road clear or just sucking it up.

I saw that one coming on the way home and crawled over it but it's in a really bad spot. Glad you're ok!
That road is well used, I would imagine the traffic would disperse the gravel in a day or two, definitely before the council ever got there. The council probably has a fair bit on their plate atm and we all know they can't multitask!
What happened to the bike?

Subike
25th April 2012, 19:45
you mean that patch of grey cement gravel from the back of a concrete mixer?
stood out like dogs balls.
Im sorry, but that was visible a long way back from the corner, reading it as a potential hazard was easy
Please never take for granted the condition of a road, always scan for hazards.
In saying that, Glad you and the bike are OK,
Always presume there is going to be junk on the roads around the bays,
Remember they service a large residential population,
Cagers like overloading trailers and have things fall off that we have to avoid.

Asher
25th April 2012, 19:57

The bikes not too bad; bend bars, indicators, mirrors, screen, bend footpeg, bent screen frame, scratched and cracked fairings.....

very much worth reporting,
one rider already come to grief in the daylight on it,
a rider tonight or in the early morning may not get off as lightly.
Let along someone in a car also sliding on it , ending in a head on coming the other way.

I guess that's what insurance is for,
council not responsible for a person binning on road droppings,
If you were able to pinpoint the vehicle that dropped it, then you could pursue the matter, insecure load and all that
But sadly in this instance , I would fix my ride, learn from it and carry on

Seen the patch , bit of banter about it at the wheatchief, few close calls ...

Could ya whack some dirt bike handle bars on it , etc - turn it into a positive to soften the blow ...... an end up with something a bit different

Good point Subike about the trailers - never thought of that but yeah given the distances those residents have to travel - lot of them overloaded

I rang *555 and reported it but im wondering if you all think its worth chasing after the council for not keeping the road clear or just sucking it up.

part of the skill that makes a good motorcyclist is surface recognition.i ride over that road most days as I live in the area, and noticed the gravel there myself.Yes,noticed.

Thats because since i have been riding since 1976 I know that surface recognition is a big reason why I am still here riding.

I feel your pain,I have slid along the road a few times myself,on the track as well as the road, but I always learn from it.

As you dig into your pocket to fix up your nice little VJ22,it might help you to remember next time never to take anything for granted and always work at least one corner ahead.

At least you would have slid along on the left,so those nice little twin stingers on the right should still be shiny.

Yup and not ashamed to admit I made an error,
i was very fortunate not to do more damage than I did,
Converting from an heavy naked to a light weight cruiser was a learning curve,
Totally different bikes to ride, so I have to change how I rode to the style of the bike
A good lesson learnt thankfully at a slowish speed

I think that you have a very good riding style.
Its really quite neat watching you on that Honda around the hills,
A couple of times I have seen you flick it out of the way of potential harm,
I doubt if we will see you kiss the tarmac unless you are accosted by one of N Z's fines cage drivers who SMIDSY.
Your next bike, when it arrives, will be peddled just as neatly too.

Hi Guys, really enjoyed the anzac day ride. Been 15yrs since I've owned a bike (well overdue) I'd love to come on the occasional WNR in the future. All my riding was in the Nth Island so everything is one big adventure again. Previous bikes were KL250 (1st) then a RZ350 (lots of fun) then I moved into an FJ1100 (did a lot of commuting between Akl and Tauranga then Thought I needed something a bit more sporty so I went to look at an FZ750, parked next to it and for the same money was a 1989 FZR1000 - you can guess what I rode out on...I will say being back on a bike again makes you well aware of what you learned and what you forgot. lol

well this thread is at the time of the year when it will almost die
but be sure there will be the odd ride most sundays starting from Burger King morehouse ave at 12pm
not big turnouts, but enough to make it fun..

Welcome to the site

Take your time bud, winters here now, and our chch roads are still very greasy from the earthquake liquefaction

Also, my plans aren't set in stone. If anyone is looking for someone to ride down with them, send me a PM.

Went for a blast last week on a week day - love that stretch from sign of kiwi to gebbies (both ways) would there be another road in canterbury that could match it for the number of corners so close together ? Thanks for the heads up TA. The powers that be seem intent on "saving" funds from the sound of things. Will have to "get A into G".

Its better that you guys spend the money on training rather than it go back into govn't coffers to be spent of other less worthy things than us bikers eh!

As it stands the $50 does end at end of june, There will be more funding when it is announced but we don't know what level it will be at and probably wont take effect until the spring.

gloplg will see you on the 16th,for the apex course- will take it easy on you due to your 'age factor' I'll talk slow and loud and use lots of pictures!!

So on Saturday I took part in the 2DriveSafe "Apex" motorcycle skills course.

Awesome. That is all.

Seriously though, I learnt plenty.

I've been riding for around 10 years and am a self taught "genius" when it comes to riding a bike. After all of an hour doing slow speed work my slow riding had improved immensely. (I never need to ride slow anyway but I'm sure it will come in handy at some point:laugh::innocent:)

My lines through corners have also improved as I understand more about vanishing points and where to be to set myself up for oncoming twisties.

Anyway, I highly recommend the course and am sure Gloplug will have a few things to say about it after he tries to learn a few new tricks :bleh:

I'll finish work at 9.30 and will wonder down if people are going to be there. I do like the beers that they have.

Its quite cold there though (unless they have a few more gas heaters than they did last time) as its pretty much an outdoor bar with a few canvas roofs. Its a cool bar though, I like it.

They are no different to many many other group rides that happen in the Canterbury region every week.

Its not a race, and an effort is made to comply with the laws as much as practicable . But we are all individuals in the end .

I agree with Dave- and the others.

If you choose to ride with us show some respect for the other riders in the group. However from the tone of your previous posts, on this and other threads, I doubt this will happen.

SVboy
18th September 2012, 15:02
It is possible for two groups to co-exist. Those who are there for a faster ride leave first..those that are there for a social pootle leave second. I would enjoy riding with RR and OAB a little quicker-thats my style and I would have more in common with them, so the chance for a ride and catch up on wed night is as valid for us as it is for the social riders. I think making WNR something that excludes those who ride faster is a bit sad. I also means if you have new people come who dont fit your slower riding criteria, rather than telling them where to go, you can ask them to ride with the faster group.

imdying
18th September 2012, 15:28
Yeah of course they can. FWIW I've ridden with OAB, and generally he just follows the speed limit... but doesn't slow down for corners (not even a little bit, in fact he generally speeds up for them)

Me? I ride a fast bike really slowly cause I'm a pussy and I just like bikes :killingme

Gareth123

The fast group used to leave first and the slow group always went second.

Worked well I thought.

I have no problem with people riding fast, just do it in the right group of people. If you get stuck in the middle of a slower group, why not just ride with them? If a nice straight comes along, pass them then.

so what your saying is WNR are boring an full on silly ol gits on crap bikes..?? and if someone doesnt listen to said silly ol gits and ride how they think you should ride your not welcome..???

you guys need to learn that this website isnt the be all and end all of biking. and some people like to come on here and take the piss and then also enjoy riding their bikes and not hanging out with geeky kiwibikers who think they are cool..

but dont stress out about it Gloplg im not keen on WNR's anyway..

bet youre glad vale is back on a yamaha

otherwise you would have to get a big number 46 sticker on yur tank to cover the yamaha up.malaysian style:weep:

Its a singapore in joke.

You faster guys could go to Hurunui by all means if you want to. I was thinking of something closer to home.

BK, Halswell, Old Taitap, Gebbies, round the bays to Port, thru the tube to the Valley.

Don't forget it still gets dark about eight o'clock this early in the season.

This ride should be open to anyone that wants to show up. If they are faster, you just tell them to leave a little earlier. If they are slower, you tell them to ride at their own pace. Finally, you have a guy............what we would call "riding sweep" that would not pressure the last guy in the group to keep up. The faster guys, if they are really good riders will have the experience to know the difference from a "spirited" ride to being stupid and dangerous. There is usually one ass hat that rides dangerous and stupid but, usually they are shunned pretty quick by the good riders and don't come back again. I know I don't want to be picking up pieces of a bike or worrying about some dummy crashing into me.

The best part is you would have a huge knowledge base to help mentor and give tips to the newer riders instead of having an inbred group that listens to a few.

To try and exclude a group just because you don't agree with their riding style is uncool. If they do something stupid, you give them a warning. That is the way people learn. They usually get the picture quick and if they don't like the rules, they will not come back.

carves up slower and newer riders.?? when did this happen buddy..?? the guy gareth descrided didnt carve up anyone before he crashed, he was at the front of the pack to start with when said "tyre" let go.

I don't think he's referring to anyone specific is he? is he? cause I'm not.

I have a story about a guy rocketing past a bunch of slower and learner riders before going for a superman into a field, don't even remember the jokers name he didn't show his face for a long time after that, and blaming the people he overtook.

First Wednesday after daylight savings.

Well since I hardly make it to WNR's very often, (I think I've done 7 since they started) all the rides I've been on have been pretty good. Although I have seen stories. I am however referring to a different group of riders that I've ridden with in the past.

Rossirep, I'm up for a bit of speed most of the time. Most people on here are. However they tend to pick and choose the time and place. If I'm with a small group of people that I know and I know they are good on a bike then it's balls to the wall and I will ride until the rear tyre starts letting go. (Yay for dirt bike riding!) If there are people about that I don't know though, I'll ride a lot slower than I normally would until I can see what they're doing. If they're riding like wankers, I peel off and go my own way.

Be the same here Gareth , plan to be blatting round on dr650 mostly this season , Find it more fun most of the time now. Tend to always leave earlier when out for a play on the speed triple with some others on wed nites and meet up later with the main group.

Been over around across the hills nearly every week this winter when it was not wet,
Grit ratio on the road around the bays was fairly heavy
Moss and dirt on the crater side of the summit road
Clean and dry on the city side of the rim,
the cross over point in the bush, mossy and slippery when damp.
Shit? Na seen it worse.

I'll second that!!

I was over the Summit Road to Gebbies and round the bays to Port last Wednesday. Small amounts of grit on the lower roads, top road clear. Of course the Summit Road should always be given respect!!!!

Tomorrow week WNR. Can't wait!!!

Before the shakes the faster group usually went over to Duvauchelles each week. I was thinking what about Hurunui as an alternative???

Ride safely guys. See you next Wednesday:2thumbsup:2thumbsup:2thumbsup:2thumbsup

Looking forward to the WNR staring up again, will be good to catch up. Hurunui sounds like a great idea, or maybe a shorter ride to Little River via Halswell?

I'd be keen on the Hurunui if I can get a late start Thursday morning organised.
Living out of CHCH, it can be a bit of a long night getting home again when we go to the hills.
