I don't think she was playing power games, I think she's just dumb!
p.s. you need a better horn, especially for that kind of situation ... :D
Yes PT I agree the honda, like most bikes needs a better horn. I would prefer a railcar horn which would "blow your Knickers off" however it would need a v8 to power the compressor to drive it. I'm thinking of air horns, which would merely cause laundry problems with your nickers rather than removal of them.:killingme:killingme
Having watched the video a number of times, it is after I start sounding the horn that the cyclist moves further towards the centre of the road.

send this vidio clip of the cyclist to the minister of police,
This is an axample of why our road toll is so high.
I was the second bike behind gloplug when passing this courteous road user
she moved closer to me as I was passing, I was almost over the center line.
This was happening less than 50 meters from a blind downhill 35kph tight left hander on a narrow section of road.
A vehicle coming the other way could have created a potential serious situation.
the woman was traveling at 55kph and accelerating!
she was only just in control.

Cyclist playing power games. Does that push anyone's buttons???:angry2::angry2::bash::bash:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JRxIhiOLQs
I wasn't there at the time but my views differ from comments so far.
The video and recent posts highlight both an annoying cyclist and some impatient, inconsiderate motorcyclists. I have been known to go for the occasional cycle ride around the bays and would be disgusted if I was overtaken in such a rude manner just because I was inconveniencing someone for all of ten seconds.

It's a 50kph zone. Why was there such a need to overtake? Was it not possible to hold back and overtake at a more suitable time?
Just my 0.003 cents.

As she was on a legal vehicle ... travelling just over the posted speed limit (apparently) why the "anger" ... ??? Do you have more right to be on the road than she has ???
Aside from the fact that SHE had the legal right to use the road ... just as you have. You have the responsibility to pass her safely. Without endangering her, yourself ... or any other road user.
Perhaps a little self control on your part.

So would you be riding so close to the middle of the road. Or weaving across the lane so much. From the little that I know of you I don't think so.

You can tell from the video that the bike is roadworthy???
The cyclists speed was 40k. (Off the vid)
Correct me if I am wrong, the road code says that on a single lane road we must travel as close to the left as practical???
The two cyclists behind the rider in the blue top were riding within a metre of the footpath, The rearmost was a man in a dark top with a blue bag on his back. The second rider was a lady wearing an orange top.
As for keeping as close to the left as practical, the video shows the first rider weaving across the lane several times to within a metre of the centre line. The video does not lie.
Also on closer inspection of the videos I think rider referred to was not a she.

It makes no difference if the bike was "roadworthy" or not (or male or female). Just because another is breaking any traffic regulation ... is not a valid reason to break any yourself. If you had collided with her, or caused her to crash .... or you crashed into a vehicle coming the other way)You could be held responsible. The vid would show THAT too. The keeping as far as practible, applies as much to the cyclist ... as to you. In single lane traffic ... motorcycles have as much right to the road as any other road user.
If your rego plate was noted ... and a complaint to police was made ... that vid may be used against you in court (well done you for that ) It would not be the first time a "me doing dumb shit" type vid has come back to bite the poster in the bum.
So you passed a vehicle travelling at 40 kms/hr ... what was the speed limit there again ???

For the want of waiting a few minutes to pass safely on a straight piece of road ... what was your hurry ??? Leaning on the horn may have caused the cyclist to freeze .. and veer more into your path ... and at your speed ... the end result may have been a dam sight more serious.
What are you so angry about??
You doing dumb shit and putting blame on somebody else ... and you bitch about ACC levies going up. I wonder if your vid attracts the attention of a popo that is familiar with the area (you wont be hard to find ) and sends you mail.

"A cynic would say the $500 plus a year rego gives motorcyclists more right to be on the road"
Who hasn't seen two abreast cyclist nattering away - (If they were cycling any slower they would fall off) up on the hills where its open speed limit ?
Anyone in a vehicle coming round a corner its just an accident waiting to happen, even if they been extra careful and traveling at 50 km/hr.
The hill and bay roads are to narrow for cyclists that do not travel at the speed of the Rest of the traffic that the speed limit is set for - period !
Save the bays for a motorbike, feet on the walking tracks or a boat.
No worries out Bottlelake for cyclists or cycle paths or if you really have to do it - Wide roads :D

Yeah...right!
Don't count on it mate, FJ's NEVER wrong...didn't ya know
For the record gloplg...I didn't think you did anything wrong, you reacted to a cyclist BREAKING THE LAW, and in doing so, he put the both of you at risk. (Obstructing traffic flow, failure to keep left and bordering on loss of control of a vehicle...all illegal)
What IS clear in this thread, is the instant defence of a cyclist in the wrong from other cyclists!.
Yet everyday we see them...running red lights and giveways, skipping up on to the foot path and then claiming that WE are the ones putting THEM at risk:facepalm:
...To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant.

Good run tonight, four of us... couple of new WNR'ers and couple of regulars (if Shoshoni and I can be called regular).
We rode over Dyres Pass round the bays to (and over) Gebbies Pass and finished at the little River Pub where we all sat down for tea.
We talked about video cameras (Go ProHD vs VIO P.O.V. HD pros and cons) and the art of staying alive, (that's roadcraft) as couple of us have just done some riding safety courses. Well at $50 each right now why wouldn't you if you can.

One of the stock banks has gotten a make over looks odd with all the tree felling going on, got to the ford by Dog Trail Rd stopped and had a look but wasn't game to do it by my self.

It was a little damper coming home.
Those of our number who piked missed a good if cool and damp ride.
Next week I've organised to be off again. Little River via Barry's Bay anyone?????

Saddens me that on this Wednesday Night Ride, a ride that was meant to help learners pick up some knowledge, that another rider appears to have run out of road yet again.
What's happening and why ??
On another topic, I'm thinking about lunch in Reefton via Lewis on either the 24th if weather look ok (or 31st as a backup date) this month. They be Saturdays. Anyone interested in a cruise there without breaking any speed limits ?
Might start a new thread closer to the day.
Thinking it would be 8:30am depart from the Peg for lunch about mid day at the Bakery/Cafe first on the left.

Maybe that's why I'm very picky with whom I choose to ride, and why I usually prefer to avoid group rides

Ok, so that is usually what happens with or without the wet.
Been there, done that... long time ago now.
Several Road Saftey Courses and an attitude adjustment since then, I'm planning for it not to happen again.
I wonder what you think the actual lesson was and could anyone here have said or done anything to make you think more about what you are doing thus maybe preventing the event.
I'd love to get much deeper in to this but not so much online as it really is hard to get to know the real person and their thought processes over the net.

Saddens me that on this Wednesday Night Ride, a ride that was meant to help learners pick up some knowledge, that another rider appears to have run out of road yet again.
What's happening and why ??
When you ride as often as we do, and in so many differing conditions, differing styles of bikes and differing skill levels,
Incidents will happen more so than if you are riding alone.
My own incident was due to a change of bike style,
Going from a naked sports tourer, with plenty of HP, good brakes and good tires
To a lower powered cruiser style bike which was brand new, only 200Km on the clock
with brakes not yet worn in properly, tires that were of poor quality, and riding it too fast for its ability to handle the conditions.
Going into the corner too fast, relying only on the front brake, and expecting the bike to turn like my bigger road bike does.
The front just plain did not grip, and she lay down on me in protest.
I have since then learnt a different style of riding, with fewer expectations of the bikes ability.
And that is where I think our problems stem from
We ride together each week, and see what others are doing with their ride,
We expect our own ability and our bikes ability to match what we see
This does not always work.
Does this mean we should stop?, No, Does it mean we should change how we ride in groups? No.
It in the end comes back to the individual to make the choice how they ride and with whom.
I am still learning , after riding for more years than I will admit to, and I am still a novice.
Every bike rides a different way, every rider has his style, every road its own dangers
Nobody can ever learn it all, no matter how many miles they ride.
You are foolish to think you ever will.
Ride to the conditions, ride your own ride, dont ride to your EGO.

Ride to the conditions, ride your own ride, dont ride to your EGO.
That sums it up, unfortunately the nature of group rides can mean people will try and keep up with the guy in front, whereas I'm quite happy for them to wait for me to eventually turn up...still in one piece

When you ride as often as we do, and in so many differing conditions, differing styles of bikes and differing skill levels,
Incidents will happen more so than if you are riding alone.....
You almost make it sound like you're ok with people crashing. I'm sorry but I'm not ok with it.
I'm a little doubtful that we can stop it, but surely we can do something to minimise it as it feels like it is happening far to often.
..... Nobody can ever learn it all, no matter how many miles they ride.
You are foolish to think you ever will.
I totally agree, it's a point they usually make when you do rider training courses, even the professionals don't proclaim to know it all.
I'll assume you aren't suggesting I think I know it all, now that would be stupid.
I would however suggest a lot of riders know less than they think they do and rely on luck far more than they actually realise.
Ride to the conditions, ride your own ride, dont ride to your EGO.
Never a truer word spoken.
Something that's often easier to say than do.

Saddens me that on this Wednesday Night Ride, a ride that was meant to help learners pick up some knowledge, that another rider appears to have run out of road yet again.
Are you sad enough to come to the WNR on a regular basis and teach the learners from your fount of knowledge???
We do need someone to take the learners under their wing!!!
Also I would point out post 1 first sentence of "rule 1".

Guys stop your bickering.
Invariably when you get a bunch of riders together with different skill levels ranging from newbie to experienced your going to see the odd time when people run out of skill and then sadly road.
It happens. Those of us that have been riding a while generally notice the signs that we are running out of skill sooner (such as running wide in a corner) than the newbies and back it off a bit and continue to ride safely.
The newbies (and this was me at one point) just keep pushing it. They think whoops took that a bit wide (still using running wide as an example), never mind I'll carry on doing what Im doing. It isn't until they run into bigger trouble occasionally running wide for example that they realize "Hey this might be a sign" and then start slowing down. Its called experience, and no amount of warning will ever be as good as first hand experience.
It always sucks to be in a group ride and finding yourself attending an accident. I've been on 3 such rides and none of them were much fun. But its a risk you take and must accept when you join a group ride. You dont know what other peoples skill levels are like until you see them ride and its hard to tell someone to slow down when your not regularly stopping.
So what do we do about it? Continue to stress the mantra of "Ride your own ride" and make sure there is an experienced rider playing tail end charlie so no one gets left behind. Stress that its more important to arrive in one piece an get there as fast as you can. And continue to give out advice where its appropriate.
Beyond that you may as well tell new riders to piss off because they are more likely to crash which isn't going to help our cause in the slightest.
Right there's my caffeine fueled rant for the day. Can you lot now get back to discussing where your going to ride to next without me so I can feel feel like stink for breaking my collar bone (stupid fragile fucking thing).

Guys stop your bickering.
Are you trying to stop us having fun Alex??????:girlfight::girlfight:
I agree with the rest of what you are saying . However it is only by pushing the boundaries that all of us gain experience. (even an old fart like me)
On the last WNR the roads were wet and dry. Which for the less experienced rider makes reading the conditions awkward. Dan came to grief about quarter way into the Scargill Valley road. I think (correct me if I am wrong) Dan may have been leading the second group.
One of my pet hates is having a sub-group of riders lead by a newby. Some of our riders appear to think that the L plate stands for LEADER!!!! For heavens sake if you are an experienced rider, in a sub-group, being led by an inexperienced rider, go to the front of the group. When at the front adjust your speed to stay 50 or so metres in front of the newby. With someone to follow, newbies have a guide as to corner entry speeds, braking points and cornering angles. It may take a while but when they get the hang of following you the whole group will travel more quickly and safely. And the newby will be gaining EXPERIENCE because YOU were proactive.
Think yourselves how much easier it is to follow an experienced rider rather than "break ground" yourself.
Yes I know "Shut up Garry"!!!!

Are you trying to stop us having fun Alex??????:girlfight::girlfight:
If I cant have fun then no one can.
However it is only by pushing the boundaries that all of us gain experience. (even an old fart like me)
Indeed, and as a rider I push my boundaries all the time. However when I find myself starting to make mistakes I back off and carry on with the rest of my ride. Some days I can push the envelope for an hour or two, others only 5 minutes. Knowing also when to push the envelope and when its time to stop comes with experience.
That in my opinion is the difference between a good rider and a new rider.
Even having a newbie follow an experienced rider is fraught with problems. A new rider my initially be keeping up, but as fatigue sets in they may find their skill level falling, then they make a mistake because they were following you, the rider infront and not riding their own ride, and then your back in accident territory.
So your back to square one again. You either ride alone or you accept the risks of riding in a group. Your always going to have accidents when people travel on the roads, we are after all only human. If you can lead a bunch of newbies then thats great but its hard to give constructive feedback to anyone when they are behind you, then they may and crash when they are on their own (which is arguably much worse than if they were traveling in a group). You have to trust yourself the riders around you to make the right decisions about their riding while you are riding with them. If you cant trust those you ride with then dont ride with them. Its that easy.
Im not going to comment on Dans accident. I wasn't on the ride, I didn't see it, and quite frankly I dont care (Im not really that heartless but he walked away and he's still riding his bike so there is nothing to care about IMO). I only posted because I was sick of reading pages of arguing.
Now back to your usual program of "Where shall we ride to" and "When Spuds gets better we should go for on a Jacksons Pie run (I dont care if its going to be winter time when that comes around, fuck you I want a pie)".

I'm sorry to bring it up again but when 6-7 people are riding and splits into two groups, why leave three newb's in the back group. Fair comment to have an experienced rider lead but we didn't have one! It took over 20 minutes for you guys to realise we weren't behind ya and come back looking for us. So we should all be thankful he did get up...and once pulled the broken bits off and got it started and like the man child he is, got back on and rode it home! :2thumbsup

What? Motorcycling isn't about the destination. I ride to Aka regularly enough and I haven't eaten there for years. Enjoy the ride that Akaroa offers, not the F&C's.

Slightly off topic ( may not be for some ) but Hi all.
we have 1 place left on our Apex course( advanced riding skills) for this saturday 9.30am start in Rangiora Check the website (http://www.2drivesafe.com/html/mb/training.html) out for more info. first come first served ( we do have other dates available too)

How many qudzillion miles has it done to need all that work,?
God its not even a old bike?
I would be sorely dissapointed to have to do that much to a ride all at the same time considering its age
What sort of maintenance have you done since owning it?

It may not actually need all of that, I found the folks who claimed it needed all that work eminently untrustworthy, which is why I was saying I don't know what it needs till Ian has taken a look. It'll definitely be needing the new pads, as Ian let me know when he serviced it about 1500-2000km ago just after buying it that they were running low, but aside from the battery I've got no idea whether the rest is true, or an unscrupulous mechanic trying to drum up some more work.
From memory it's got about 23000km on the clock, and as far as maintenance goes, I've had it serviced a couple of times, had new tyres, sprockets and chain fitted, and other than that just me doing routine stuff like oiling the chain, checking pressures, and replacing a blown bulb.

Ah, I was wondering about that - at one point the announcer did call him "the one armed bandit" and the KTM with the thumb clutch in the pits had bandit racing decals on it, just wasn't entirely sure if it was onearmedbandit from KB or not.

now what's wrong with C3PO's wiring? The only reason I haven't made more of those vids recently is that bike is off the road with, funnily enough, electrical issues! :D
And Africa NEEDS batteries, think of the children!
I was just kidding about them using my footage. Just some of the shots are very similar so I must have been standing right on top of their cameraman in several places without knowing it.

..just come out and talk..you need a little more than just a bike...minimum requirements of attire, leathers, gloves, back-brace, regulation helmet and it does also mean buying day licences, around $20-25 bucks and entry to a race meeting which is $60.00 at our meetings,(CAMS) www.cams-racing.org.nz
...it isn't that much of an obstacle really, after your first, 'good fun', race, the rules of life change...a bit like a young fellas first fuck...you spend the rest of your life chasing that unobtainable feeling...after that you either get a two stroke bent or some other affliction...get your arse out to a club day at Ruapuna...there are bikes about that you could get a ride on...

Taking the dirt bikes (that's the non reged/wofed dedicated off road bikes this time) up the Waimak North bank Saturday morning. Parking the transport at/near the MX Track carpark area then going up stream toward the gorge hopefully at least as far as the little terrace track loops.
Will be a slow ride with dirt novices.
Just thought I'd put it out there in case other dirt bike owners here were interested. Probably unloading about 10:15am.

I know WNR is over and only runs during daylight saving but the weather looks pretty good for tomorrow and I have been suggesting to others that we can meet for a ride around the hills.
I figure the best way to achieve this would just be to post here and work it like a normal WNR (weather permitting) meet at BK moorehouse but head off a bit earlier at about 5:30 to try beat the dark
From there the plan is to head up columbo st to dyres pass, follow the below route round to the weatsheaf (if we need to have a stop, maybe a quick beer) and then continue on this route: http://quikmaps.com/show/201199
after I complete the loop I often go around again, depending on traffic and road conditions
I'm not expecting many to turn up but more than a couple we may have to split into groups to help negotiate the traffic
Also given my level of experience I would like it if anyone with a few years riding under their belt could show up and act as a TEC if anyone other than me goes on this ride

I would be keen, but not at 6:30.
Too dark or sun in your eyes
5:30 sounds way better!

I'd be keen for either or both. When and where does the Ulysses ride go? Ah, found it:

Maybe instead of Arthurs Pass, we do the St. John ride then head over to Akas?

so this is for tomorrow (well, later today really, Wed)? That sound like fun tho met service reckons it's gonna rain. If it doesn't rain, I'm keen!

I'm getting conflicting weather reports, MET service is the more reliable and says rain, but I think I'll just keep an eye on it and see how it turns out.

Generally more than just the tyres on the bike start touching the ground for prolonged periods of time...

Looks good so far, MET service still predicts rain but it says 0.2mm between 5 and 7pm, and the app on my phone says 10% chance of rain(which seems to be far more accurate than MET service in terms of how often it gets it right despite the fact that it is linked to the weather channel in america)
I figure it should be alright, planning on keeping this pretty short anyway - I'm in the middle of moving and got some sorting out to do tonight before I go home.
I will post an update in a couple of hours, but for now still planning on setting out from BK at 5:30

Any idea on where you guys will head to after the Ulysses ride?
I've ridden in a huge group of riders before and I have no desire to do it again, it was not very enjoyable (even though it was for a good cause). However if the weather is good and Im feeling up for a hoon I'd be more than happy to meet you guys afterwards for a beer.

Cheers for the eventful ride this evening folks! Hope all is well Mushu ...
While I was waiting for the KB bunch at the sign of the Kiwi I met 2 other bikers called Magda and Lee who just happened to be out for a ride doing the exact same route so we joined up.
Magda and Lee, if you find this forum, get in touch. Your txt didn't come through so I don't have your number.
