Advice please
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=757183838
(note, above engine has 77k on the clock)
...this a good deal?
...do I "need" a replacement engine (Mine is running strong and only has 130,000k on her...barely run in for a VFR lol)
I do however need a new PCB for the dash(I fixed mine with glue, wires and good luck!)...and the headers are required...and I am planning to take her off the road and do complete break down, mod and rebuild when funds permit(currently collecting the parts...LOTS! of parts )...is this a cheaper option than a refresh of the current donk?
tempted but...advice?
thanks all :niceone:

Anyone got some nc30 valve shims?
What thickness do you need? I could lend you some if you need to work out sizes required seeing you are in Hamilton.

When I'm done rebuilding my RVF motor (again) I'll have a bunch of bits left over. Give me a shout when you work out what you need.
Thanks Ecko and HDC - given it's my daily commuter bike, I imagine if I pull it apart its going to need putting back together again before it can be ridden, with new gaskets (?or gasket goo?) in that case, would I be better to take it to AJ at motohaus, get his opinion and then get parts based on that/depending what he has in stock?

I actually think the cheapo K conversion kits look a little better than most of the Tyga ones (especially the tails). Pity the quality is so shit though.

Only photo I have currently, but this is what replaced the old 250.
I've had it around 2 months, and I'm loving it more and more each time I ride it!
1992 400, had done 51200km when I picked it up and now it gets taken out daily!
Minor faring issues, but I never expected perfection. Its in very good condition overall and I couldn't have picked a better upgrade!

The back half is OK. I like the undertail exhaust with the single sided swing arm. Very purdy and very tidy.
But the front half is fugly. The headlights/screen/very front bit is from a v-tec VFR800, and just looks like the rest of it has melted a bit.
Plus, cheapy malaysian knock off fairings on something as beautiful as an NC30 just feels wrong.
*Edit, Nice bike GM. Always lusted after one of those in that colour scheme. Good score!

If you spend some time putting the fairings on you can get the gaps to close up nicely. Although that is assuming they still have the clips/tabs in place.

...the current donk is fine, could do with some fresh clutch plates and the starter clutch is starting to slip on the very rare occassion...but hay, a well maintained replacement motor for the back of the shed, with only 77k, plus headers and speedo...for $900! :niceone:
A big thanks to Simon from Good Parts Ltd out in Rangiora :first:
...been such a nice to guy to deal with, options as to what parts I actually wanted with the motor (He threw in the headers & dash for free!), and he even offers payment plan options etc, just Great service and a nice down to earth guy to deal with :niceone:

Probably a long shot, but does anyone want to trade a good condition original exhaust (full system) for a cut system with aftermarket can? I want a new exhaust but I can't bring myself to chop my original one.
Good opportunity for someone wanting to restore their NC30 to original condition.

Haha, I wish! I'd be in the dog house for awhile if I bought that.
Was sitting in my lounge room yesterday and heard a whiny rumble coming down the neighbours driveway, I look out the window and what do I see, but a type 1 NC30 come out! I had to nip down to the garage to double check it wasn't mine.

Quick question:
What would you guys expect to pay for a set of cut NC30 headers with a scratched and dented aftermarket muffler attached?
I've been offered a set but I have no idea if the price is good or not.
Really just looking to buy it for the headers so I can get a nice new exhaust without having to chop my standard set.
Icemaestro
16th August 2014, 11:56
No idea really, never priced up shipping from the uk which is where other second hand ones would come from..vague guess at 250 or 300? Since it comes with the muffler, if it still works good with no holes etc. sorry about the lack of reply re pack rack - there aren't many with them on - I bought mine from a guy who had just bought/sold the bike, and the new owner preferred 80$ rather than the pack rack (score)! You can buy them new, cycletreads said about 289 or so from memory for the brackets and rack...

Yeah, with the rarity and size of the part it's pretty hard to figure out what a fair price is in New Zealand. I was offered it for $165 incl shipping, so I went ahead with it. Might have a crack at restoring the muffler, it's a 'Zorst' branded one and apparently they sound pretty awesome.

It's not pretty. I'm thinking some kind of filler for the dents and a high heat carbon sticker wrap would make it look respectable.

Mine has a Zorst muffler on it, looks identical to that one in the photo. Sounds pretty damn nice to my ear. Can grab a few photos or a quick video of it and put it up on Youtube if you're curious as to what it looks/sounds like installed...
The muffler is welded up at both ends.

I've got a big box of NC30 fairing pieces in varying conditions and colours (some painted, some original, all in varying states of cracked/broken mounts etc.) and I'm going to have to move them to a new house with less space soon.
Is there any interest in stuff like that or is it just chuck-out material? Don't really want anything for it, just seems a shame to throw them out, given that my first bike was cobbled together from pieces in worse condition than most of these...

Doesn't look like the dents will pop out very easily. I think the only way to get it looking nice will be some filler and a covering of some kind.
Apparently 3M Di-Noc vinyl works quite well on mufflers; the heat doesn't destroy it.

Those are all the fairing pieces that I've got. The originals came as spares with the bike, the painted silver parts are the leftovers from a full replacement under insurance when the bike got skittled in a car park. It's a pretty mixed bag, really...
Send me a PM if you're interested in any of them.
I've also got a good working CDI unit if anyone needs one. Pulled it out when I put the Ignitech programmable one in. Can swap it back in and prove that it's working if needed.
Edit: Fairing pieces are gone. CDI is still available.

Swapped the exhaust over today, and put in the 90+ shock with remote res. Seems to turn in a little better now, and doesn't run wide on corner exit as badly.
The new pipe sounds great, didn't realise how much of a difference it'd make from stock.
Went for a run with it jetted 118/115 and didn't have any issues. I'm still running the stock headers, so perhaps I don't need to go up to 120/118?
Also, my A/F screws are currently set to 1 & 6/8 turns out. At 2 turns out I was getting a rich idle when it was hot. I tested with the new exhaust and the idle was steady and didn't hang on return to idle when revved, which indicates that it's not lean. This is a bit odd, because 2 turns out is for factory setup, so running leaner should not work well with an open exhaust, but it does :sweatdrop
Also; when you guys are setting your A/F screws, how far are you supposed to screw them in? My old Bandit was running Mikuni carbs, and if you screwed them in far at all you'd fuck the passageways that the tip of the screw goes into, so you just had to lightly seat them.
Is it the same deal with the Keihins on the NC30? Or should I be bottoming them out as much as I can. I have been stopping when I feel too much resistance, which means that they could be screwed out further than I think.

Me? I don't touch carbs lol. I've tuned cars on aftermarket ECU's with fuel injection, but carbs to me is nothing but gypsy magic!

It seems as though the method I was using was correct (gently seating them).
So they're still at 1 and 3/4 turns out, this is fine at 80 degrees and under, but when I get up around 90 the idle lowers and gets a little bit lumpy. It doesn't die, but is a little bit more difficult to get going off idle.
This is indicative of a rich idle right? (idle drops and becomes a little erratic when hotter but is fine when colder). So it seems as though I need to turn them in (leaner) a little more.
I'm just a bit worried that I am going quite a bit leaner than the factory recommended setting for the screws (2 turns out). Has anyone else had to run them this lean?
Icemaestro
31st August 2014, 16:22
Did you look into that air filter? Not a bad thought has that is very very lean, suggestive that it really isn't getting air! What does that air filter look like?

Maybe you've got one in your boxes of bits HDC? :niceone:

Hey, this might be suited to the general forum, but the bike got a major flat the other day, trailered it to ebbs motorcycles where they fitted a 2nd hand tyre I've had sitting there to go on 3/4 tread left). Since then I've noticed slight wobbling of the bars at 80km or above...I spoke to the guy there about it, he said its probably because they only statically balance the rear wheel, and that id need to go to a place that has an electronic balancer to fix it ...any one had this issue and would suggest the same? Just don't want to go spend 40$ for the privilege not for it to be fixed...

if it turns over it will start - probably bad fuel or water or something. They need a fairing IMO but it has a spare rear wheel which would make my spare chassis (with plate on hold) a runner. bada boom bada bing.

Hi There this is ebany from ebbs motorcycle it's not normal for your bike to wobble at any speed! the tyre may have a flat spot or the balance is not right.
I will also be having a word with my mechanic that did not inform me of this and letting you drive off with your wobbling bike all the work from ebbs comes with a 30 day warranty PS#if you think that what my mechanic is saying is not to your liking as to speak to me i am trying my best to build a trustworthy business to all my customers and friends.

I'm still using that dented one I got from Gary in Tauranga with the cut exhaust system
It'll do in the meantime, but I am on the lookout for something a bit tidier.
I was going to nab that Micron, but was unsure about the fit as I haven't heard of one for an NC30 either. Plus it didn't come with any mounting gear. It also looked kinda big.

I feel dirty posting this.. but I kind of like the type 1 scheme on the tyga tail.
Normally I am not a fan of trying to 'update' the looks of cool bikes; it just ends up looking tacky.
But for some reason, this one appeals to me.
What say you?

Blah. Never been a fan of that tail. I like the tyga two seat if anything. Also the rvf tail I think has a nicer rear light secretion..little more curved. If I was going to update the look is probably do the 2 seat tail, then the front - I do like the aggressive angry look of the r1...would look sweet on an nc30 I reckon!

Yeah fair point.. it is a bit too different from the rest of the bike isn't it.
It's moot anyway, because if I had $600 spare to spend on the bike, it'd be going into the suspension, not a pretty fairing!
HenryDorsetCase
10th October 2014, 14:48
It doesn't look right to me because the pointy sticky up tail shouts 90's but the roundy front part shouts 80's.
I actually think they look better with stock bodywork to be fair. Or completely updated (SP1 front end and pattern bodywork would look cool but a mish to fit.)

Soooo I got a little bored today, and thought I'd try and tidy up my exhaust. It's a bit of a mess, with big dents and scratches down the side. I got it with a cut NC30 system that I bought, with the intention of replacing it with a nice muffler ASAP.
I haven't found one that I like yet, so thought that I should probably make this one a little more presentable.
Step 1: Remove dents.
Step 2: Remove scratches.
Obviously doing this properly would be a whoooole lot of time and hassle. So I came up with an inventive way to shorten the whole procedure!
I decided to cover the dents with thin aluminium, and then vinyl wrap over the whole lot. I tested some strips of vinyl on the hot parts of the exhaust, and they didn't melt, so that's good.
The next part was deciding where to get the aluminium from.. After some deliberation, I decided to grab a random assortment of 500ml beers from the supermarket and chop up the cans. This led to some rather rapid drinking of 1.5l of beer in the sun, which probably explains why my vinyl wrapping job ended up with so many creases..
So anyway, I made some panels form the cans, stuck them to the exhaust with some chopped up pieces of heat shielding underneath to retain the original shape. Then on went the vinyl wrap (with quite a few creases etc, to be blamed on the beer of course).
While it doesn't look perfect, it looks a hell of a lot better than it did previously, and should tie me over until I find a muffler that I like.

My thoughts exactly. If people want a more modern bike there are others available for the same price as a tidy NC30 + fancy fairings. Just go and buy an R6 (which is arguably a better bike all round) and save butchering one more nc30.

Damn, that arrow would've have been great, but it's a bit too damaged.
On the topic of exhausts; I've been in contact with Danmoto, the Hong Kong based guys who make cheap exhausts for a whole lot of different bikes. I've bought off them before for other bikes and the workmanship was actually pretty good.
I've asked if they could make me up a 30cm carbon exhaust for the NC30 to go on the cut pipes, I provided the inlet angle required, and inlet size. They said they'd be happy to, and will put together a clamping system that doesn't use springs and hooks to save me welding extra bits on.
Best of all, they'll do it for the same price as their other kits, no extra cost for the custom job!
So it's going to cost me $170 NZD including shipping, which is pretty bloody good imo.
Could have had the titanium one for an extra $50, but I like the look of the carbon.

I'm sure that's been photoshopped...look at the uniform wheel colour...and then compare it to the heat shield for the exhausts (which looks like it's been sitting for 20 years). I do like what I can see of the front though...rear...interesting... bit high for my liking I think! can you imagine a shortass like me sitting on that!

Does anyone have a spare lower rubber flap that flops down to direct air from below carbs? Maybe luke with your hrc nc30? My project seems to be missing it.
Also going to be doing an order of bits either from David silver or rick oliver - at this stage at least for carb manifold rubbers - does anyone want to do a group by and cut down shipping?

Sorry, the only one I had is on Vinzor's bike!
With David Silvers, if you can keep the price below 60GBP then the postage will be reasonable and just royal mail. As soon as it goes over 60 GBP, they courier it with UPS and it gets expensive so really you need a small order with them!

That guys has been trying to flog NC bits for ages but it is all over priced. I ended up buying a front master cylinder off him and it was shocking - spray painted purple and leaking like a sieve. haha just saw your modified post. yup. I bought a footrest hanger off him years ago, something like 60$ - ridiculous, but there weren't any other options at the time.
Pulled open my carbs on the project today...Green crap all through them! #18 main on one of the fronts (#15 on the other front) not to mention the spiderwebs underneath the carbs...I'm just using carb cleaner but half tempted to just dunk them in a bucket of soapy water they are so dirty! Any suggestions? the brass jets are green (oxidisation?). That or should I just take them to be ultrasonically cleaned?
I know I'm in for a set of float gaskets, but I want to try avoid buying the whole set of rubber (can all the rubber o rings etc in the rick o kit be installed without taking the carbs apart?) mainly because of the difficulty and having never done it, and 2 because it's another 50$ I don't want to spend! I was hoping to get the bike running (have finished connecting up and routing the wiring harness now, main problem is that the mount plate for the rear coil on the rear subframe isn't there (any ideas? was thinking making some aluminium brackets possibly?), prev owner has chopped the undertray (I have both bits, but think it'd look a bit naff to aryldite it back together?), missing the switch bit on the LH switchgear light (moves from high to low to park beam), and throttle grip has been changed to something aftermarket and mangled (have the original though so might just be a case of removing and putting the oem one back on as it doesn't look damaged). Oh, that and the brake calipers were seized on and wheel bearings shot I think. Haven't checked steering bearings. I like a good challenge...
What are your thoughts about fairings? I keep an eye on yahoo japan, but seriously contemplating a seller off Ioffer - can get it landed with a tank cover and aftermarket fairing infills for about 500-550$ these days! From the same jokers who I bought a cbr600f fairing set off, and that fit pretty darn good, just a bit of tweaking here and there. I also don't have any fixings - has anyone used a pro bolt kit? and what do you do at the 1/4 turn quick release fairing bit?

Not sure what is in the kit? I have stripped a few carbs - most of the time it is just the float bowl gaskets that get hard and leak. Haven't had to replace any float needles or seat yet (touch wood). Should be able to clean the jets up without any issues with some carb cleaner. Jets are pretty cheap though but if you replace - make sure you get Keihin ones rather than copies as the sizes can vary.
For fairings - I'm a real purist so I'd be looking for OEM panels to respray for a road bike. However, they would be hard to find and cost a fortune so you should consider other options.

Thanks :-) yeah hoping just float seals, my last set needed everything though, not sure why but everything had gone and it literally leaked from every hole with rubber (except the floats cause I'd replaced those) it could! Thanks Vincent, I have a whole lot of jets somewhere, and didn't get to the front of the carbs last night, so 1) hoping that the other 118 and 115 are there, and 2) I'm pretty sure I have spare 115 and 118's in my box of bits.
Given it is a stocker, I'm assuming I go by Cammo's guide and keep the 115 and 118's in there? the only flap I'm missing as I said before is the one to cool the carbs, I still have the bit that pressurises the airbox, and snorkel is still all there.

Need the whole bottom and top end. I haven't taken the case covers off yet but I'm assuming/hoping the clutch and genny are fine. Won't need starter motor or anything to do with the coolant system. Case covers and sump are also fine.
I do have spare heads and special cams so at a push, I won't need those, but I really just want to just get the bike going again first before I start more tuning!

Well I've got one VFR that was run out of oil that I brought for the cases. I have no idea what state it is in internally. The 2nd is a RVF that I bought for the heads, as the valve seats were in better condition than the ones I had. Now I know why all my prev vfr's have always had exhaust systems on them...must find some pipes now! (There's a half system in japan for 150$, and probably another 200$ shipping, very tempted!)....
Any thoughts as to front 2 cylinders not firing? I have a small spark, looked a little weak to me but unsure. Have replaced plugs, I'm thinking carbs could do with another clean as they were shocking, my only though is that doesn't the limp home mode restrict firing to the front two cylinders. And should I be checking electrics/cdi? Or does the fact I have spark rule that out?

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkIt is the exhaust not allowing the bolt to come out.
If you look at this: http://s19.photobucket.com/user/Cammo78/media/LowerLink.jpg.html
The bottom bolt on mine has to come out the other side and I can't move the linkage high enough to clear the exhaust. With the shorter stock shock I think it would have been possible to do this with exhaust in place. I think the bike shop removed the exhaust when they installed the shock and put the bolt back in as they found it where most people would put it in backwards so you can remove it without interfering with the exhaust.
Was trying to avoid removing exhaust as you need to replace gaskets.

Can you get the top bolt off? I took an rs250 shock and put a stock shock on, took the whole linkage off with it - undoing the top bolt in that picture, not the bottom one (the shock we put in had also been removed the same way and came with the whole linkage). It's raining so really can't be bothered going outside to have a look :-p

They did the same as what I did - loosened the subframe bolts and lifted it up - maybe play around with the position/load on the shock? I remember playing around with putting blocks of wood under the swingarm (I think we also had the rear wheel off maybe?, bike was on an abba stand)...

I can't even adjust the preload on the shock as the c spanner either hits the frame or hits the plastic shock guard that is part of the undertray
If I remove the subframe and undertray I could probably lift the shock high enough to allow the bolt to clear the exhaust for removal. Will have a look tonight.

I've been contemplating switching the half system over onto the project bike, but from your troubles, reading 400gb and generally considering it has sat for 12 years I'm not sure!
On a positive note, stripped and recond the brake calipers on the weekend...lessons learned - impact driver on the caliper plug screws, used a safety pin to get the seals out and scrape the crap out of the grooves, then they key thing to soak the seals in brake fluid first - did red rubber grease first but was an absolute mission to get the pistons back in! Also, microfiber cloths get the crap off pistons great :-).

Then I read some comments on 400GB which put me off slightly with reports of rusted bolts rounding off. So I checked the bolts on the exhaust. At the front they look fine. At the back they are so rusted up I don't think they have ever been removed.

I'm wondering if I'm going to regret this, but.....
As much fun as it is making people on bigger bikes look silly in the corners, I've been on a 400 for a long time now (A.K.A I'm getting old,fat and lazy). As the boss has a strict one bike policy, to be able to upgrade if have say goodbye to my little pocket rocket. Because you're a bunch of GC's I thought I'd offer it up here first.
FOR SALE:
1994 Honda RVF 400 - $4500
80,000ish km's (It's too much fun not to ride)
I've spent a small fortune on the RVF in the time that I've had it. Mechanically the bike is sound. Cosmetically it's a bit rough.
History
I brought it 5ish years ago as an insurance write off (stolen and recovered). Got it back on the road and rode it happily unitl had to rebuild the motor about 18,00 km's ago. I had to split the cases to replace a bearing on the input shaft on the gearbox. While it was apart I gave the motor a birthday, replacing bearings and seals. The valve seats on the heads were a bit worn, so I brought another motor with good heads and replaced the valve stem seals while I was at it. Unfortunately I made a mistake when re-assembling the motor and got the crank bearings in the wrong place. This lead to a couple of stuffed crank journals and bearings. These were replaced by a qualified machanic this time to ensure it was right. Since then the bike has been running great until a couple of dodgey plug leads meant it wouldn't rev. I replaced all 4 leads with better quality NGK ones. Below is a list of parts I have replaced or upgraded on the bike.
Mechanically
All new bearings and Seals in the motor (approx 18,000 km's ago)
Samco water hoses and stainless clips
Uprated EBC kelvar clutch plates and springs
New Clutch steels
Rebuilt front brake calipers (some new pistons, all new seals)
New brake rotors (approx 4 years ago, still like new)
Braided front brake lines
New seals in front brake master cylinder
Racetech springs, valving and shim stacks (installed by Robert Taylor at KSS)
Carbs cleaned during last last visit to mechanic.
Electrically
New Alternator
New Ignitech HD reg/rec
New Ignitech Programmable CDI (no speed limiter)
NGK plug leads
New Spark plugs (approx 2,000 km's ago)
Cosmetically
Cheap aftermarket fairings in West racing colours. have a cracks and the fit ain't great.
Wheels have been freshly powder coated (White)
Riders seat professionally recovered in leather.
Things to do...
Rear Shock could do with replacing to match the upgraded front suspension.
Side stand switch isn't working, but it is ignored by the Ignitech CDI anyway. I might replace it anyway?
Make it look pretty (if that is your thing?)
Ride it hard and embarass your mates on bigger bikes, with your "learners approved" RVF. (if that is not your thing, you are not worthy of owning one)

If Playday run it like their other days then just turn up and ride. Taping things and removing mirrors should be optional. Handy to remove mirrors as it stops you checking them all the time. There is a Gull across the road but if you fill up before you leave you should have plenty.
You should get four 15 minute sessions and novice group normally goes first so don't be late and miss the first session like I did last time....

Also are there any known faults I should look out for?

Any similar beneficial upgrades too?

Also are there any known faults I should look out for?
This bike is likely to need alot of work, so anything I should check early while its in semi small pieces would be good to know.
Any similar beneficial upgrades too?
Thanks in advance for any info offered, cheers
Where abouts are you mate? I'm on my third one of these, current project just needs a disc to be re registered. Is yours a de reg? Was it the one on trademe a while back with various original fairings from diff schemes? Donestically as on here, econohonda occ or aj at motohaus in ponsonby. What do you need? Big things are carbs cleaned, poss rubber intakes replaced (don't get the cheap eBay ones, get rvf400 ones). I get bits from David silver spares or rick oliver from 400gb forum. Postage is the big one. Other big thing to check is charging - known for bad reg rectifier, killing battery and can take out many other things. Beneficial upgrades - suspension. And 17" rear rim from an rvf if you have the money! Cause tyres are limited to about 4 rear options. Always keen to help out :-)

Wow awesome response off the bat. This is obviously a great thread for vfrs.
I'm in Auckland. Dunno if it was on trade me, I bought it from someone I know.
Yeah pretty sure its dereged. Isn't that automatic after a year without a WOF?
I'm aware its got a problem with the battery according to the old owner which, is likely that reg rectifier problem.
I'm planning on flushing all the fluids first, cleaning the carbs and replacing all filters and plugs before anything else.
After that it's going to need fork seals, pads and tires. Once I've don't all that I'm sure I'll find all the other faults elsewhere.
Hoping the head bearings and swingarm bearings and both sets of wheel bearings are all still good.
After that I'll check my wallet and see how much further I want to take things *nervous haha

What kind of rear shock does it have in it?

check the plugs on the rhs of the bike as well - white one there tends to melt when the rr and battery goes and if there is a bit of corrosion. Where abouts in auck are you? I'm out west in Glen Eden. Does it have a plate? as just check, as I managed to get my second VFR still registered after it didn't have rego (not on hold either) for around 13-14 months...just put it on hold and was all good.
Have you priced plugs for these? From memory I bought my last set through amazon for a steal at about 75$NZ delievered :gob:

I got a set of plugs, $110 off the shelf at BNT, which I thought was pretty good (if you need them straight away / cant wait). Honda was around $250 iirc.

Thanks again, this is definitely all helpful info.
Sorry haven't been able to get the fairing off yet so can't see much of the rear shock to identify at this point. Just making a spot for it to live in the garage this week, as it's gonna be in bits for a while I suspect.
Thanks for the cheap plugs tip, that's gonna save me a pretty penny.
Just checked and the carjam report says registration status "ACTIVE" woohoo!
Looks like I'm stuck in Auckland every night while the family go to the mandle for a week or two over xmas thanks to work :brick: but guess that means I have couple weeks with no distractions to work on the bike
gonna need a few more tools too probably......things just keep getting better and better this xmas!!!:woohoo:

And eBay is your friend. Rear shock is easy to pick with a quick glance if you know what you are looking for - most are stockers though, 89 being no external cannister, 90-93 being external reservoir.

Ebay is my number 1 bookmark for almost everything. Just had a look on there for vfr400 listings and there's shed loads of stuff. This aint going to be half as painful as I thought it was going to be. :woohoo:

Hi guys, was at Levels in the weekend and found it a real bitch to put the paddock stand in on my own without the side stand attached.
How do you guys approach the task? I was wondering if it is possible to contort your body enough to thread the stand in to the axle while still sitting on the bike? I will try a few different methods in the garage at home with someone near by to catch her if I muck up.
On a brighter note, what a great bike on the track! Can't wait for my first race meeting on her.

When I am putting stands on I just lean the tail section up against my hip while turned toward the rear of the bike. Just be careful not to overbalance in the other direction.

Easy with the rear tail fairing off the bike,I usually hold by the rear subframe as I slot it in, or with the pack rack I hold that :-p.
Agreed on the track comment! When are people next going to Hampton downs?

First race meeting at Ruapuna in CAMS on the 24th of Jan providing I can get everything I want to do on her done in time.
Got an issue with the front brakes staying on atm, I've rebuilt the calipers, replaced both rotors and pads and put in all new fluid. I am thinking the problem is in the master cylinder now so will strip that down and see if it is blocked in the little bleed back hole. Tyres are a tad old too (7 years old) and squared off from the previous owner so if I can push the budget I'll slip on some new sport demons.

Did you keep her shiny side up?Yep! Yet to crash a motorcycle. Have used all there is to use on the tyre but yet to get knee down....need to learn how to hang off more.
Kinda strange catching someone through a corner and they have their knee down and you don't....

Suspension is working nicely so little tyre wear...After a day at Taupo a month ago the rear tyre was shredded. Adjusted the suspension and it cleaned up nicely.

As for the knee down business, you will get there I'm sure, it certainly isn't a gauge of how fast you can ride though. Remember to draw a line with your hand grip and try and align your body with it, especially your head. All your weight on the outside leg and waahooo, knee down!

Hnngg, shinies. You have so many trick bits on your NC, I am jealous. Just out of interest, what kind of fork setup are you running?Standard forks with racetech emulators and stiffer springs (.90kg/mm and .95kg/mm...yeah different stiffness in each fork but gives an overall spring rate of .925 i guess) and ohlins oil I believe. No idea what is so special about the oil I just trusted that Robert Taylor guy.
Other than the forks, nitron shock and 17" rear there is nothing trick about my NC!

Hello here,
Looking for some reference information for vfr800 99-01, if anybody has it in garage - could you check what the normal temperature of your stock/replaced regulator/rectifier is after 5min on idle? (can touch it on the left side if seat removed). Not precise, but just cold/warm/hot/so-hot-cant-touch.
Just had RR replaced with new FH012aa (previous one did a bit of smoke..), it's all good with voltage but hot as hell, up to melting black plastic and "overheat protection" firing from time to time. Not sure if it supposed to be like this by design, or something weird happening around.

no VFR800 sorry, but the point of that RR is that it should run cooler than stock RR - was it an oem one or chinese copy perhaps? or otherwise is it suitable for the vfr800? I know people put them on out vfr400's as well as the CBR600s, the 800 doesn't have a higher output by any chance?

Replaced my front tyre with a bridgestone S20. Seems nice so far, turn in is noticeably smoother, it doesn't feel like it's 'falling in' anymore (previous tyre was a knackered BT014 that felt skittery and horrible). I'll will post some more feedback when I've put some more KMs on it.

Ruapuna raceway is our local in Churchur. I like it a lot.
Levels in Timaru though it is toight and tiny and the walls particularly at the end of the back straight are very very close...
Teretonga in Invergiggle.... never been there
Highlands in sunny Cromwell. Not motorcycle friendly but apparently a good track.

Weeelll... it probably wouldn't help you at all iffen I did measure it. I've had my '01 for over 11 years now, and after having two R/Rs in a row cark it on previous bikes ('91 VFR750 and '99 VTR1000), one of the first (of very many) things I did with the VFR800 when I bought it was fit a pentium cooler fan to the R/R. So it's been great. Also had the same Motobatt battery in it for many years. It's been the most reliable and enjoyable bike I've had in over 40 years of motorbicycling. (Mind you, it should be; it was the most expensive, and I've spent a smallish fortune on mods.)

Balanced my carbs today..
Good lord, what a bloody job that was. Spent the first 2 hours trying to get the blanking screws out. They were in perrrrfect condition, so I don't think they've been off since the bike was new! A lot of hammering and WD40 was required.
It turns out that unless you have TINY hands, you really do need a right angled screwdriver to get at the balancing screws. I have some nice burns on my hands from getting in there with a 7mm socket..
All up it took me about 4 hours. Lots and lots of fucking around trying to work out how to improvise tools to access hard to reach places. At one point I had a 7mm socket duct taped at a 90 degree angle onto a crescent attached to a long screwdriver to get at the balancing screws. It didn't work :(.
On a brighter note. It's smoother all through the rev range, less vibey, and not nearly as jerky with 1st gear low speed maneuvering. It was worth it. Just..

NC24 will be debuting in her (and my) first race meet on the 24th of Jan with CAMS at Ruapuna. Can't wait. Been stripping the road gear off her in the garage.
Still nutting out the issue of the front brake pistons not releasing, took the master cylinder off and gave it a good clean out without pulling it apart (those circlips look nasty) so hopefully the brakes will function nicely for me on the day. So far I've rebuilt both calipers and put on brand new disks n rotors and changed all the fluid. If it isn't this then I shall scream, shout and throw a bit of a tantrum. Silly previous owner did not look after this bike well...
Any other VFR'ers going to be there on the day?
