Compressed air or a fine bit of copper wire (ie a strand from a twist of audio wire that's at least a couple inches long, and a bit of patience :-). I've had the same problems (but am now the owner of an air compressor lol).
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Be real careful with wire though, if you scratch the jet it can give you no end of shit tracking it down at a later date. Not happened to me, but you pick up stories...
Also, Bros 400 project? Resto or mod?
Icemaestro
2nd June 2015, 04:19
Yeah if you get just one little filament of the copper wire it bends pretty easily so figure it shouldn't damage the jet. Bros400 is gone already :-) resto project. On to a Yama srx600 now that the carbs are giving me grief on! Temporarily interrupted by a trip to Europe (where I am now :-))

Heya
Sold my VTR 250, owned a GSX 400X Impulse before that and prior to the Suzuki had a Honda CBR250R
Planning on picking up an '06 VFR 800 in a couple of weeks with 50'000km on the clock dolled up in 'Winning Red' or whatever the paint scheme is called. Any big points I need to take note of before handing over money for the VFR? I know to listen for cam-chain tensioner, test steering head bearings, chain & sprockets etc.

Cheers! Ended up buying the bike, tested the battery with the bike off and again with the bike idling to check voltage increase and make sure the RR was working... Which it appeared to be! Did the usual steering head bearings, break pads, check fork seals etc.
I'm now the proud owner of an '06 VFR 800!

Making slow progress with my old nc30. Fork seals and stantions sorted, new r/rectifier new battery. Managed to get it started then got busy with work again for a month or two....came back and realised now that I have no lights!?
Any common faults like the r/rectifier one that may explain this? Or do I start tracing wires and shit for all of eternity?
Icemaestro

No lights...does the bike start and run? is the battery charging? are the lights turned on at the switch (sorry, worth asking!) have the bulbs blown? what bulbs are fitted (wattage, as sometimes people put h4 bulbs in without putting a low voltage relay in, which then melts the switchgear, resulting in the lights not working), are the rear lights on? (as they should come on with the fronts), are the parking lights on? (a little bulb at the bottom of each light, is the first click on the LH switchgear).
the RR is a weak spot, and poorly maintained or old batteries can assist with it's demise.
Let us know re above. I've had many a head scratcher with these bikes.

Thanks for the suggestions. The bike doesn't start at the moment but I did manage to get it started a couple of months ago once I fitted the new battery and rectifier. After that it went back to its corner of the garage waiting until now.
The neutral light comes on when the key is turned and the starter motor kicks over but I suspect fuel line/ ignition/issues over actual electrical issues, as it almost fires up but just won't quite catch. No other lights at all work. Front, rear, brake, indicators, nothing at all.
I probably shouldn't be trying to start it up at this point anyway as I haven't changed the old fluids or filters yet or even swapped in the new plugs. so I'll get on to that before trying again.
The old owner assures me the lights and everything else (bar the old charging problem) worked when he parked it up - over 3 years ago - so bit lost tbh.
I've checked the obvious fuses and bulbs all seem to be fine (I'll go over them all again once this colds out of my head).
Looks like I'm just gonna have to trace wires once I get the rest of this shit sorted. Was just hoping that maybe there was another common known fault causing the problem. But that would have been too lucky for my track record with all things motorised. Not moaning though, I got something to fill my winter doing. Now where's that fibreglass resin hiding.....
Icemaestro
22nd July 2015, 20:26
Gotcha. Well if you have checked fuses, then yes, next is wiring, as if it is turning over then you have power :-) and lights don't need the cdi to work. I'm not sure if you need the lh switchgear. - quite possibly, that's what I would check first. Do a bit of a google bypassing it, maybe check 400gb as I'm sure it would have happened to someone somewhere before.

Thank you Ice. I'll have a look at that while keeping my fingers crossed.
Might wait until I have my towbar back and take it to my workshop before pulling anymore plastics off. I envisage panels and wires spread everywhere once this gets project really gets started.

Hey guys, its been awhile posting here for me. I used to own a vfr400 nc30.
Moved up to a vfr800 rc46, i bought it slightly damaged and have been putting it back together. Now my question is ~ does the instrument cluster on the bike angle to the right slightly, looking sitting on the bike.
The bike did have a fall on the left side which bent the left side mirror mounting down by about 10mm, hence im not sure if the cluster was pushed too , im hoping someone here has a clean bike that can clear this up for me.
Thanks guys.

I've gotten (I think) to the bottom of my "my VFR is running like shit" issues. I havent tried to start it for a long while. nine months or something. Thought I better get er running today. No go. flattened the battery trying,,, as you do*.
Pulled it to bits and wanted to have a look down the carbs to make sure all four throttle butterflies were working. Went to slide the errrr round thingy that is held by spring and is the CV part up and down. Had to push REALLY hard on one and it went up and not down again. in fact two are stuck UP and one went up, stayed for a minute then went down. One of four works as it should. :(
Plus could there be a bigger cunt of a thing to work on than VFR carbs? Raw fuel all over the place too. I pulled all four plugs out and turned the motor over a few times by hand to blow fuel out. right rear cylinder ejaculated a huge load all over my face - like when I used to blow sailors out the back of the port in Lyttelton. Interestingly too that plug was really black - way darker than the others.....
I will order four carb rebuild kits tonight but at this stage I dont think i can be fucked arsing about with it. I think I will pay someone to do it. I think I will buy four new rubber inlet manifolds too.
Gah.
Still once rebuilt hopefully it will be back to the sweet running little thing it was. Change the brake fluid, new front tyre (its all blue on both shoulders and is about four years old..... and away we go. Or I will sell it and all the bits.
Productive afternoon in the shed but it REEKS of petrol now.

I reckon they are nicer than the srx600 I have. Dual wierd carb thing that is driving me nuts. Vfr's just need practice :-).
I reckon you should sell ;-).
Re the forks - early or late variety? Not that I need any :-). Not sure if I said on here, but can't recommend rick Oliver's upgrade kit on the later forks enough.

Get em off the bike, grab a nice clean workbench, set up the little tools, label all parts as the come off, clean up everything, get out the magnifying glass and make sure it's all clean and to spec, put it all back together replacing and perished rubber parts, worn jets, stripped screws, clean it again, and assemble.
Phoar, makes me firm just thinking about it.

That was my last track day and it fucking sucked. what I should have done was investigated it properly then. What I actually did was park it in the shed for > nine months in the hope that elves would come and fix it. Elves are notoriously unreliable so I am sorting it out myself.
When the carb rebuild kits arrive I am going to get someone to ultrasonic the carbs and then balance and set them up. I have not got the equipment or patience for that stuff.... or, if I'm honest, the skills.

Nice! Stick with the original tail though I reckon, skywards pointing SF tails look fugly on most bikes, and even more so on ones 20+ years old.
I purchased some ali a while back to remake my subframe, just as a lightweight stocker. But had too much other shit on, might try and get back to it over xmas as well...

The actual tail sity pretty low on the back wheel giving it that "whale" look. The new subframe holds the gsxr tail fairing so that it is roughly the same angle as a modern sprotbike.
That being saif I am playing with the idea of a stumpy tail fairing to look like the new MV augusta's. Not quite sure yet.
Currently have stripped out the wiring loom so will be making a new "cut down" version that I can hide within the frame nicely.

Anyone looking to buy a 1988 NC24? Will be up on Trademe soon but I thought I would post on here get the fanatics interested.
Been used as a track bike for less than a year, will come with road gear either on the bike or in a box depending on what the buyer wants to use it for, reg on hold. Selling her as I want a bucket to go racing on.
Recent work:
Complete front brake overhaul from master cyl to disks.
Fork seals and new oil as well as inspected to check forks are in good shape, they are.
Sport demons, still pretty new as they have nice even wear from only even being run on the track.
Braided lines (will come with bike for the right price, otherwise I will be chucking the rubber ones back on).
Engine runs beautifully, never once skipped a beat while I've been putting it through it's paces on track. Starts first pop from cold.
Fairings aren't in the greatest shape as it had a wee spill on the RHS, I've had them welded up which cost an arm and a fucking leg to do but not painted.
Looking for $2350 ONO.
PM me if ya keen

For anyone who happens to be interested I survived the trip back from Tauranga to Wellington without issue. Was a perfect day to do the ride but I certainly couldn't do the bike justice since I am still very rusty after 4 years without regular riding. Also set the tyres to the wrong pressure and only found out when I arrived home. Rides considerably better now.
I've attached a pic of the view of a rubbish bin, the vfr and lake Taupo.
The FI bikes may not have the cam gear whine but they still have a certain whinny noise on enthusiastic acceleration that reminds me of the old 400.
Now to do the Silver Ride Forever course...

Haven't got one but very curious whether you chose the auto version or the normal?
I know it is popular to give them hate for some reason but I really do like the styling. I like the idea of the tiptronic style shifting on the auto model after watching a few youtube videos about it.

I've got the manual version, there are not that many DCT models here.
Never noticed any hate towards the bike, quite the opposite in fact. But even if there was I wouldn't care. I ride what I like & too bad if no one else likes it.

Glad I was wrong about the hate as they have a unique appeal. I have only seen two in flesh and only briefly. The one at Motomart was DCT so thought they may be common (due to the amazing sample size suggesting 50% were!). Well out of my price range though.:(

Glad I was wrong about the hate as they have a unique appeal. I have only seen two in flesh and only briefly. The one at Motomart was DCT so thought they may be common (due to the amazing sample size suggesting 50% were!). Well out of my price range though.:(
I know of a few others, none of which are the DCT version.

I bought a VFR400 NC30 for a project but I aint had time to scratch my arse this year so I'm cashing out. I got other things I wanna do and spend time and money on so....... I will bolt the cracked old fairings back on tomorrow and either stick it on turdme or negotiate here if faster?
It was running couple months ago and put back in the garage where it has sat since. I tried turning it over the week and it wouldn't quite bite, although it was close. I've had the fork seals replaced and the fork stanchions service and de-pitted professionally. New battery, new reg/rec and even got new set of plugs I haven't put in yet but will leave with the bike of course. Rego is on hold for another 3 months (just got the expired notice and got online today, it may have to be caught up the 1month I missed??)
Anyway, it's rough but good bones as they say, paint peeling from wheels since brake fluid was spilt on it. one small dent in the tank, etc.
end of the day, the engine will run, the brakes and suspension do what they are meant to, anyone with a bit of free time and a few tools can make this thing fly again I'm sure.
Price starts at $300 (what I paid excluding the parts and work I did since)....... Whos got an offer and the sooner it's picked up the better as I can't get a second bike in the garage until this one is gone. I am in Mangere Bridge, Manukau.
Happy new year and all that shit too by the way

Also, for those interested - latest vfr project is up and running - just needs the wheels painted now, coolant overflow tube (small crack at join to front), front brake light switch, a new headlight (I'll take one from my other vfr as It has a Low voltage one on one side, but it will take normal h4's) and a new fuel tap kit. And I snapped the brake lever on my regular vfr, so one of those on order though.
What I've done so far - cleaned bike (no mean feat) cleaned chain/sprockets (brand new I think, oem wax still on them had just collected dust and crap on it), fitted fairing kit/ screen to front, fitted oem tail I bought from Japan, installed new carb manifold rubbers, cleaned carbs, replaced reg/rec wiring/connectors, removed heat shield and polished rear headers, flushed and replaced coolant. Looking good now! Sorry I put it in the carport before taking a picture once I was done!
Starts and runs beautifully - I'm going to go back and fiddle with the carbs on my daily runner as they aren't as good as this!! Tempted to keep her and sell the daily but too much good/expensive stuff on that one!

No problems mate I had never looked at em closely. Yeah I think they may have been left outside a bit which is shit! Isn't there a place in Hamilton which refinishes fork stanchions? I wonder if they might be able to do the same for brake pistons.

Pretty much said the pistons with pitting are toast. Figured that anyway. They can resleeve (i believe that is the word he used) them for $65. Asked about getting new ones made and he didnt give me a price but said resleeving is more cost effective. New pistons from ebay are around the same price. These prices are not that attractive at the moment.
Hopefully AJ will get back to me otherwise I will look at getting some calipers in from Japan as they seem to sell for less than $100. Obviously a risk with the condition of the pistons but would like to avoid the ebay pistons if possible.

What about wemoto or Rick Oliver? Similar price I think but I don't think you'd win on yahoo auctions ones...more problem with more sitting and salt on the roads. Piston kit from Rick o including the seals is 16 pounds per piston, so 32 pounds per caliper, but with new seals as well I guess. Call aj rather than email - he can vary on replying when he is busy :-)

Agree that the yahoo calipers are going to be risky.
Never had any lucky getting a response from RO. He does the large piston and seals for around $30 each. I already have the seals though.
These pistons are similar price to RO but without the seals.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/90-HONDA-VFR750R-RC30-NEW-K-L-FRONT-BRAKE-CALIPER-30-2-x-22-6mm-PISTON-32-2301-/371565942635?hash=item56830e576b:g:VfgAAOSwPc9W1zc H&vxp=mtr#shpCntId
Thankfully the smaller pistons are in good condition and it is only two of the larger ones that are no good. Finding the smaller pistons is harder but not impossible. Can get them for about 26 euro from CMSNL.
I think the best option right now is to spend the $100 on the two new pistons shipped from ebay. Little bit more expensive than other options but easier to get.
Will think about it.
Do you need some as well Icemaestro?

No luck getting hold of AJ.
Went to Honda Hamilton. $42 from Honda. 1 in nz. Ordered that with another coming from Japan.
Honda spares in Te Aroha have second hand for around $30. Decided to go new for the extra few $.
These are for the large caliper pistons. As far as I can tell the small ones are NLA (couldnt order them from Honda) but you can possibly order from a place like CMSNL.
Just realised I gave them the wrong part # for the smaller piston so they may still be able to stock it.

What I do have:
Main frame with VIN number and number plate. Rego on hold.
subframe.
Front triple trees.
Two sets of forks (one with good stanchions, one with really good lowers. One looks to have been drilled for emulators but not sure.
stock rear shock.
complete swingarm: including sprocket, disc and master cylinder.
complete set of front brakes m/cyl
a non stock front fairing complete
a replica stock tail unit (I was keeping it for my racebike but no point. It is single seat and has a stock seat pad and tail light to fit.
front rim (good cond) no tyre
one front brake disc - I got this as a spare but it seems OK.
one complete loom.
one incomplete wiring loom One ECU (which has "fucked?" written on it. It is a question not a statement. the issue I was chasing at the time did not improve or get worse by swapping the ECU - it was a carb problem.
some other bits and bobs.
I am keen for all this stuff to begone from my garage. Prefer pickup. Much prefer a single sale.

Looking at selling my NC30, just wondering what it might be worth..
86~K km.
1991
Previous owner tried to repaint it red, but somehow fucked it up and painted it a metallic champagne colour (or you could call it pink)
Has new plastic red/black fairings (china, but fit all good), so only the wheels and tank need repainting.
Other than the pink bits, bike is very sound mechanically, in last 1000km its had:
new tyres
new rear brake disc and pads
engine has new big end and main bearings (genuine)
valves reshimmed by honda
new valve stem seals (genuine)
all new gaskets etc as engine was apart
new thermostat
new sprockets and chain
coolant change
oil + filter change
Pretty much everything has been done on it, also has braided brake lines, carbon fibre muffler, some aftermarket CDI unit etc.
Looking at selling cause I only have my learners and cops keep hounding me, had to buy LAMS bike otherwise will loose my license on demerits.

Is the revlimit on an NC30 controlled by the CDI? Ie, there is no easy way to bypass it? Mine appears to have no rev limiter, wondering if the previous owner diddled with it.
Hi,
I'm not too clear on this as a number of my nc30's have generally stopped at around 15.5k rpm - there is definitely a limiter due to a tab in the speedo that kicks in at 180km/h, that then signals to the CDI to cut power to 2 cylinders. there are multiple ways around this restriction - non stock cdi (ignitech, HRC etc), in line de restrictor such as M-Max or there is an HRC one that plugs between the loom and the CDI, or there is a 'bend the tab in the speedo' way of doing it. I think there is also a resistor modification?
ROM limit - I don't think the inline box modifies the RPM rev limit, only another CDI will do that such as an HRC or ignitech programmable one - take a photo and post your cdi? and how far up does it go? ie did you just get scared it was in the red or it actually went off the chart? from memory 14.5k is the limit, from a quick read it suggests that people generally read up to 15.5 standard ue to inaccuracies in the rev gauge, and the programmable box increase it to 16.5 indicated or so.
I did used to have an nc30 that went to a bloke in chch in 2011 or so which had an hrc cdi on it....kick myself now!

Yeah it dosent have the speed limiter either. I'll get a picture of the CDI box next time im in the shed. I found out it dosent rev limit when it didnt click into 2nd gear properly and bounced backout, valves did meet pistons and such things. Hence why wanting to get the rev limiter to work this time.

They very slightly kissed (due to valve float I suspect), which threw a valve shim out (which got jammed and snapped in half). It still rode home, just made a wild tapping noise as the rocker arm was running directly on the valve stem. You could see on the pistons where the exhaust valves touched and removed some carbon ( no damage to pistons.)
I rebuilt the engine, as I stripped it down searching for the other half of the valve shim. The valves didnt seem bent, but I put second hand heads on just in case. New big end and little end bearings, gaskets, valve stem seals etc, new shims etc. It was very much a "while its out and apart, may as well" kind of deal.

Hi,
I'm not too clear on this as a number of my nc30's have generally stopped at around 15.5k rpm - there is definitely a limiter due to a tab in the speedo that kicks in at 180km/h, that then signals to the CDI to cut power to 2 cylinders. there are multiple ways around this restriction - non stock cdi (ignitech, HRC etc), in line de restrictor such as M-Max or there is an HRC one that plugs between the loom and the CDI, or there is a 'bend the tab in the speedo' way of doing it.
I did used to have an nc30 that went to a bloke in chch in 2011 or so which had an hrc cdi on it....kick myself now!

new here, here's my bike. My dad got it in 1992 with about 12,000km on it. Its now got about 95,000km. Dad had a tendency to not use it for months at a time in summer (he ran in summer, biked in winter) as a result the alternator was always getting nailed to charge up the battery when he did use it. Eventually it killed the alternator, which is pretty much the only work ive had to do to it.

Greetings fellows.
Finally got my NC30 started and running over the weekend, going to need a bit more lovin though but engine runs mint :headbang:.
What I need is a fuel tap/ Petcock for a NC30 standard tank, anyone got one in their bits and bobs? Henry perhaps?

why do you need the whole thing? I have a fuel tap repair kit here if you can't be bothered waiting on ebay...spring, diaphragm and plastic bit....fixes HRC modded or leaky fuel taps. only time it should need replacing is if it leaks out the riveted side, or the inside bit snaps (happened to one of mine once).

Fuck.
at this stage I am thinking of wrecking it (it has some fruity bits) and buying a Daytona 675 racebike.
I dont see the value of an engine rebuild which I would have to pay someone to do.

When did you last check valve clearances - if ever ?
Ive never done it. There, I admitted it. Plus it sat for two years doing nothing at one point. :( entirely self inflicted.
What it is, of course is a complete lack of "start at the beginning, and work from there" - because I had problems with fuel and carburation (sp?) I assumed all problems were with fuel and carburetion. It took fresh eyes and someone asking the basic question you've just asked (When did you last do a compression test? Have you done a leakdown test? Have you checked valve clearances?) i.e. start at the beginning with a list, move down the list.
Occams Razor, innit?

I have a few other bikes, never been a Honda fan, but I stick with my own opinion, that you cannot criticise another bike or brand of bike until you have owned and ridden one for a while. The world is full of bikers that love to think their bikes are the best, end of story.
I do not want to be one of those people.
After riding (my first Honda road bike) this little 800VFR I can truly say that it is a great bike, It is well made, seems very reliable so far, has plenty of power, is comfortable, handles very well, has a after market exhaust which gives it a real nice sound, surpisingly nice actually. Seat is comfortable after 2 hours of riding, never been further on it yet. Have not noticed that the lean to the handle bars is not excessive, so not too wristy after 2 hours of riding, but could be after 4 -5 hours, just guessing here. The V4 engine is awesome, smooth torquey, revs so easily. Although can be a bit lumpy if going too slow in higher gears.
I have bought this Honda on the information I have gained from the internet and VFR forums stating in the main that the VFR800i cam driven Pre vtech are the best of a great model. I cannot agree or disagree with this comment, but what I can say ( after owning one) so far is that this bike is a little "gem".

Hi,
Does anyone on here have any nc30/35 spares? After engine bolts, nc35 rubber flap, front wheel spacers, possibly a rear master cylinder (compression of current empty one sounds like air is coming out?), any nc35 fairings, instrument/front fairing brackets, nc30 tacho, chain/sprockets, nc35 front and rear lights, spare bolts for rear subframe and above parts, pillion pegs, exhaust system (all headers and muffler bar the rear small bit, nc35 front and rear seats, full lock set, top of triple t (my one has the lock holder shaved off).
I probably need a few cables as well like the throttle grip/cables, maybe choke cable, clutch cable, possibly mount as well but haven't thought that far ahead.
Project is in the shed and needs help!

Yes its sitting in the corner of the garage looking sad. Still deciding what to do - I would quite like the 444cc motor thaat guy is trying to sell but the whole buying who knows what thing puts me off. But to rebuild my motor to that spec is $4 - $5k.
Plus I have been so busy I havent had time think really. I did spend Labour day tidying up the shed and so I now have space to work on something if I can find the time and motivation

True. The nc30 engine is pretty solid though, and talking to him either engine I think would be pretty safe. I've bought a few engines with unknown history now with no issues! Guy never replied back to me about the standard one!
Any of those bits sitting there needing a home still?
I have to say I haven't ridden my nc30 in about a year now. Cleaned out and dry stored the carbs, did valve clearances and oil filter change with full synth oil and battery on a tender, so should be sweet though. Having a kid does make me think twice - biker died on my daily commute the other day when a bus pulled out in front of him.

yea clutch (I think) I don't recall Haynes saying anything special about it other than jam the cogs with a rag in lieu of the special tool (which keep getting chewed rather than this bolt budging).

Hello again VFRPS members,
After leaving NZ for awhile and (foolishly) selling my NC30 I will be back for a month from mid January next year and will be doing a short motorcycle tour with some friends. Alas... I no longer have a motorcycle in NZ.
I just thought I'd throw out some feelers and see if anybody has a cosmetically rough, but mechanically sound(ish) NC30 they'd be interested in selling.
I specify cosmetically rough because I don't want to spend much, but it does need to be a WoFable, running bike as I won't have much spanner time available after arriving before setting off on a multi day ride.
So if you have a sad neglected NC30 (or any other bike that fits the criteria) sitting in a garage somewhere that needs a home, let me know!
My budget is $1500 to $2000ish, but for the right bike I might be able to stretch that a little bit.

Hi VinzOr
Mega Motorcycle Centre (Previously Budget Spares) in Chch will have, or be able to source them. However, for fork seals, I would buy OE Honda ones.

Anyone know what needle this is? Came out of Icemaestro's old NC30 and I don't think it's a factory needle (although it looks like one). It's brass coloured where the factory ones were silver, and none of them are stamped with J51A or J51B.
It's showing a little wear which may be causing a slight rich condition at 3k - 4k RPM when warm, but I just want to make sure it's not a strange needle with a weird profile that I can fix by dropping a washer.

Turns out they're Rick Oliver's road needles that remove the 6 - 7k flat spot. I removed the shims from under them and that fixed almost all of the fueling issues, with a slight hesitation at 3k RPM which I think is due to excessive wear on one particular needle (left rear plug soots up a bit while the rest are clean). I contacted RO and after having a look at the wear on the needle he offered me a discount on some replacements, top guy!

27th May 2019, 15:30
I think this may have something to do with the low RPM fueling...

Further inspection shows that the worn part is actually embedded in the carb and is above and at an angle to the emulsion tube. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be a replaceable service part, so I need to find some that aren't quite as worn!

Found a set of loose carb bodies locally, swapped out the two problematic ones in the assembly, and now she's running beautifully.
Hooray!
Time to tidy up the fairings now. Any leads on where to get a rattle can of Honda Ross White paint? Not sure about rattle can, but a decent paint shop might be able to colour match it and give you some. You would need your own paint gun though unless you got homies with one. Either that or they might not charge too much to blast it on some prepped fairings for ya

Long time no chat, just bought me a bike after a 3 year hiatus (house/child/wedding/moving) got an '07 VTR1000 just a couple days ago. Dropped by previous owner (aren't they always?) So a few scratches and scuffs.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191217/b94b16b3212ecce20070ca00a20d7ca2.jpg

Awesome! VTR's are such a great balance of comfort, touring ability, fun, and affordability!
Might see you out and about if you're still around the Waikato.

Greetings. New member here and just got a gen 8 VFR. I used to have a gen 5 for many years (love it!) before stopped riding for about 10 years. Looking forward to getting more mileage with it !

Does anybody have a rubber chain slider for an NC30 laying about? The long black rubber bit that lays along the swingarm.
Mine is half disintegrated and I really should replace it.
Also interested in any old (non-running is fine) bikes, or bulk bins of NC30 parts that have been sitting around collecting dust.

I am looking for a full engine rebuild gasket set for a VFR400R NC30 R3K (1989 though I think they're all the same). I have ordered one out of the UK but not sure on ETA. So if anyone in NZ has one, I'm keen to buy it.

I have a 4th gen 97 with the stock muffler. I'm thinking of getting a 9 in high mount Delkevic muffler. Does anyone know if they produce a legal sound in NZ? Don't want to cough up for it and find I cant get a WoF!
Cheers

I am in the process of doing valve clearances and rocker cover gaskets on the NC30, and I need 11 new shims.
Managed to swap a few around to get them in spec, but I am after:
3 x 220
7 x 225
1 x 230
The local Honda shop sells packs containing 5 of a particular size listed at $15 for the pack, which isn't too bad, but it means I'd have to buy 4 packs to cover the sizes I need, and I'd have 9 shims left over afterward.
Just wondering if anybody knows of a shop around Hamilton that will trade shims, or sell single shims? I don't really wanna buy a pack of 5 when I only need one of a particular size.

Not there yet, still rocking a clapped out old nc21.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm after a broken down NC30 to tinker with at the moment.

What sort of money are you after?

Tank, wheels/tires, chain are good condition. Has new piston rings & engine gasket
Fairings are alittle worse for wear (the tail fairing is cracked for instance)
The main reason I've decided to give up on the rebuild is crank bearings need replacing & not easily available
The bike has done around 90,000miles & is starting to show it
Money wise I'd *like* $4k so I can buy a DRZ400 but I'm not expecting that, I'd be happy with $1400, as parted out should be able to get that easy enough, but open to offers; price is in no way stone set
Flick me a message if you want to view or anything.

I have an NC30 that is bit of a project (fairings are a mix of original, fiberglass, and chinese plastic and different colours). Approx 90,000km. Engine has new big end and crank bearings. Valves shimmed by honda.
Last road it approx 2 years ago and ran fine. Has a few spares with it (mainly a set of heads).
Reg on hold.
Looking to off load it in the near future if anyone is interested.

Hi team, I'm after a few NC30 bits and pieces, so if anybody's got anything laying around they'd like to get rid of, let me know!
Looking for:
Tail lights
Headlights
Indicators
Choke
Idle adjuster
The rubber intake bit that plugs into the front of the airbox
A frame with live tags, if not too pricey
Thanks!

For those interested in such things, here is a link to a playlist of videos of a nice Scottish man who restores motorbikes. His latest? A tatty VFR400R NC30. Lot of work. Nice result.

I just watched the final one last night. It made me feel very lazy. The lengths he goes to to replicate factory finishes is really something.

Right? The anodizing and zinc plating and presumably yellow zinc is very impressive.
I am still looking at that $10k NC35

I know prices on NC30s are getting a bit silly, but $5k for this seems a tad optimistic!

Bit of a longshot, but does anybody have a good condition NC30 rear cylinder head for sale? Or a borked engine I could scavenge one off?
Unfortunately a questionable spark plug thread in my road bike has finally given up the ghost (it was a long time coming) and I'd rather not mess around with helicoils or re-tapping if I can just replace the head.
F5 Dave
29th July 2025, 18:21
That's hardcore.
But if you have to take it off to replace, just pop it into an engine reconditioner and they can fit it for a nominal sum. It's their bread and butter.
HenryDorsetCase
29th July 2025, 18:57
Just weld the sparkplug in. They cost like $50 a pop so will last forever.

Not gonna lie, lathering it in JB weld was briefly on the options list...
You'll be pleased to know that the engine from your old track bike is currently in there while the annoyingly less reliable road bike engine one gets a refresh.

Yeah I think that's probably what I'll end up doing as it'll be getting a top end refresh while it's apart anyway. Valve stem seals have needed replacement for quite some time!

Fantastic!
Really pleased that deal worked out and its getting used.
"Refreshing" the other motor could include a 444cc piston set, some bigger crabs and a turbo. Just saying.

Turbo? That'd be the most expensive 10HP anybody ever gained haha.
Have been looking at some big bore kits though. Seems like a pretty reliable way to make a bit more power.
It'll likely end up just staying in standard form though. More interested in throwing time and effort into the track bike once the engine is back in. Fairings are in the process of fibreglass repair and paint. I saw some very cool F3 NC30s racing at Taupo earlier this year which gave me some inspiration. Sooooon.
