This is where BRONZ could / should get involved and advocate for the WRBs to be made safer.

The research has been done as to what is required to improve their safety. If NZTA and ACC were truly interested in reducing the costs of road accidents then they could get a university engineering department involved with it - perhaps a PhD for someone and practical results for all concerned.

In 2007 Qusai/Draco and Zapf kicked off the WRB campaign via Kiwibiker and over a year or two collected around 8,000 signatures (I stand to be corrected on that figure) but they lost interest in the whole thing soon after.. because everyone else lost interest. It went nowhere, the petition papers were not delivered, they were handed on to another group (AAG) in an attempt to pump some life back into it. Never really got going to be honest. AAG morphed into MAG and the petition papers basically sat in a cupboard for the next few years, they were offered back to the reformed MAG but were not wanted and in early 2014 they were dumped into a 9mt skip.

A BRONZ post from 2007. Nine years ago! and what has happened? many many more kilometers of WRB's have gone up.

BRONZ has concerns about road barriers and in particular 'Brifen' wire rope barriers. BRONZ intends to take the opportunity to meet with Transit to discuss these concerns.

We would like to see:

- A review of the deployment of barriers and wire rope barriers in particular
- No further deployment of wire rope barriers until that review is complete.
- An immediate action plan by Transit to make existing barriers safer for motorcyclists.

PhD it doesn't take 4 years of research to work out that if we make wrb safer then we should. That's just a delaying tactic.

Once you've done the post and structural install then adding more covers to the lower section isn't that hard. It's just roll formed sections FFS. There's a few roll forming companies here in NZ should be a piece of cake.

Wrb and brick walls are meant to absorb sliding or glancing impacts not head on.:stupid:

Minimising injury's and entanglement damages is what we should be pushing

Notice how often webs are right next to dodgy road surfaces like ranguriri

If ACC was really concerned they would lobby nzta (whatever new name they are hiding behind) to do something. Obviously we NEED to get our people into the right places. Tackle people like P Goff who also ride. Make it a non party issue.

Yes, I did when I rode past them recently. I also noticed that I rode accordingly at that point, which would have occurred weather barriers were installed at that location or not.

Well the Wrb protest ride footage on channel three news tonight was a total embarrassment to motorcyclists everywhere.
Cheers guys, thanks for making us all look like uninformed knob ends with incredibly poor dress sense.

yeahhhhhhhhhh well... just seen the news clip, not a trustworthy face they used, whats with the patchs... as for the riding fuck sake how could any person let alone politician take that shit seriously, over the center line even down the wrong side of the rd...

I ride past them appropriately too.
Just the arseholes who drive as close as possible to me an overtake any chance they get meanwhile an added hazard is passing alongside.

But I think they.wrbs. may save my arseholes if someone in an opposing lane screw up and tries to cross

And how many bikers died when a car crossed the centreline vs how many bikers died hitting 'cheese-cutters'?

For people that pay far less attention to the task of operating a motor vehicle than I do I'd guess.

Oh aye, but most of us reckon we pay enough attention, that we're above average drivers, riders.

And nor is paying attention all that's required to avoid intimate contact with "roadside furniture".

WRBs or median barriers in general?

Why barriers - either median or roadside... because we don't teach people to drive or ride, just how to start, steer and stop a vehicle...

Anything that can make the consequences of an accident worse than it otherwise could have been.

I'm not convinced anyone's doing any sort of cost/benefit work before plonking yet another 4"x4" post beside the road.

And if they are it's obviously the same analysis that installs WRB instead of the equally effective concrete barriers: the sort that doesn't bother factoring the cost to bikers. Just cars.

In fact I'd suggest that if any such arithmetic did, in fact include the costs to bikers and, and as a consequence had to install WRB with Mototub panels or similar that all of a sudden concrete barriers would officially look like a fucking good idea.

Driving through the Waikato & Auckland regions on a regular basis it's frightening to see just how often damage is inflicted onto the WRB's. Frightening when you think about what might have happened without it being there to prevent a head-on. The Ramarama straight seems to have seen numpties hit the WRB on an almost weekly basis lately, WTF?

From NZTA.

A study of NZ motorcycle-barrier crash data from January 2001 to July 2013 shows of the 20 motorcycle fatalities following hitting a barrier, 13 were from W-beam and 3 from wire rope. It is worth noting that in this time period there were 97 fatalities from collision with posts or poles, 70 from hitting a traffic sign and 93 from crashing into unprotected trees.

Of the barrier collisions, the results show that wire rope safety barriers have around half the fatality rate of W-beam barriers and that concrete barriers are the most dangerous of all to motorcyclists.

Go to this thread: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/177676-NZTA-response-to-question-about-wire-rope-barriers

You'll find plenty of reading there.

Ocean1, I agree that a "safety barrier" should enhance safety for all, no matter where it is. As I have said before, I don't believe we can change the use of WRBs but we may be able to change the way they are constructed. Concrete barriers may be a preferred but the reality is that WRBs will continue to be used as either median barriers or road-side barriers. We need to work to make the barriers safer for all road users.

kinda the way i woulda thought, not that we have a huge number of cheese cutters down here, we have the way more dangerous (but obviously much more effective) plastic posts in the between us and on coming traffic in the dangerous spots on our roads.

but on a more serious note, it seems to me that the whole cheese cutter thing is based on emotion not fact and i seriously can not see the benefit of hitting concrete barriers over cheese cutters with a motorcycle

WRB is slightly cheaper than concrete. Over 5 years. Just about the same price over actual expected life. Performs indistinguishably.

Now, maybe I'm getting cynical in my advanced dotage, but as I said I bet you a pound to a pinch of shit that if they had to make WRB more friendly to bikers then we'd be using concrete.

Even as it is the price differences are almost negligible, bikers safety is being compromised for a few bucks a mile.

Are we comparing apples with bananas?
and how many accidents per location, how many and what sort of accidents/injures happened wire rope vs conch barrier.

Entanglement can have a huge impact on a body sure might not kill them but will maim a motorcyclist. What we should be doing is reducing the level of injury.

If wire rope barriers were so effective then we should remove the concrete barriers along SH1 at green lane and see what happens when we replace them with wire rope.

Wire rope would see a reduction of speed for some time till people get used to it but overall I reckon that the average speed would decrease. Because of the fear factor WRB have people would pay more attention when driving, the number of crashes would reduce -> reduced deaths due to lower speed and number of accidents.

I will go and read Moi's further reading project.

its the posts that would cause major damage, by entanglement, concrete barriers would just slide.
people think concrete barriers OK I can go faster because 'I won't get crushed/entangled just brush/slide down the side'

I still think WRB and W types would improve a lot with a lower rail to stop riders from sliding into posts.

Read the report.....
statistics, statistics, damn statistics.

yeah I could have written that

it shows we like to ride in the afternoons in clear dry conditions, left handlers usually on a Monday, Wednesday and usually a Friday. We expect to be able to go faster so take more risks. Funny that most of the WRB are on the median lane perfect for hitting/sliding into on LH bends.
No info on the age group or if under influence of substance etc. or type of bike etc - sports, cruiser what ever.

If I was worried about hitting trees I'd have given up the dirt bikes years ago.

You don't see too many beside main roads up here, pretty common further south. And compared to installing pretty much any safety feature at all cutting a few trees down is peanuts. So why have they not only not done that, but bung up enough artificial ones to kill an extra 97 bikers?

My thoughts would be to have the wire rope all the way down to stop you sliding through and chopping bits off. Also spread the impact force over a bigger area.

But thats just a thought.

The bod from transit reckoned the reason they stop at halfway is twofold.
1. 1.5 tonne and lighter cars end up back in their own lane on their roof having not been on their side.
2. larger wheeled 2 tonne cars tend to go straight over into the other lane if the angle of incidence is greater than about 20 degrees.

Neither is optimal when trying to catch a vehicle and deflect it back into its own lane.
Hence the ropes start above typical axle heights and where probable bumper height will be below the bottom wire.

Us but we only make up < 2% by volume. We are also statisticaly more likely to strike another vehicle than a median barrier.
Majority of road furniture struck by a motorcyclist is on the outside (left), not the inside.

I fort over have never nearly struck an item because I took a corner to tight.
I have nearly struck a barrier in the centre median. But trying to evade another vehicle.

Concrete barriers are not replaced with wire rope barriers, and especially not for experimental purposes.

No motorcyclist will argue that you would probably die if you hit one, as you probably would if you hit a truck/car head on where there are no barriers at all. They have installed WRB's on the northern side Brynderwyn's now with the widening upgrade. Noted that there is a 1.5mt strip where the wire rope is between the north and south bound lanes.

WRB's are cheaper than concrete barriers. That became evident when discussions were being had 5-6 years ago about this very subject.

Except inertia will still be present and your turning force will not since your rubber is no longer connecting you to the road. Result you carry on in a straight line which relatively speaking is to the outside.
The opposite of course is true on a left turn... according to specification they are not installed on right of a left turn... Tui ad right there.

No need, just ride from Dunedin to Mosgiel and back. The older section has a concrete median that is scuffed to fuck. I can only think of one repair required in the last five years when it got hit by a truck at near to a right angle. Most of the time the damage is swept up, car removed and nobody is any the wiser to there having been an incident - and some of them have been fairly big crashes.

Then you look at the WRB on the new section and that gets hit every few weeks. You know this because the damage is evident for days afterwards and you often wonder how the hell people hit it where they do. A few years back I looked at lifetime maintenance costs for various types of barrier but as the cost was a big fat zero for concrete I did not get far.

Not so sure I would agree with your second comment. Have seen several riders seriously injured hitting concrete median barriers. While the smooth face might look forgiving in comparison to a WRB they are still made of concrete. My advice is the same whatever the barrier is made of, best not to hit it.

You'd think so, but apparently it was the main topic of conversation among the middle aged and older ladies that mrs neels works with, apparently it's the scandal of the year.

I find it's good sport to mention Hayden Padden, Anton Cooper, or Avalon Biddle in a conversation and watch the blank looks, then I get to look back at them as if they're a bit stupid because actually they are....

Agree but it has some connection to those mentioned, LOL. The Mauger family is well known in motorsport in ChCh. I'd pick that dad Phil is going to cop some stick from his car club mates...

Well it's Friday and it's my turn to rant.

The weird and wonderful stuff (aka crap) found on our roads bewilders me. In the past week alone, two ladders, some hand tools, several load binders, short lengths of chain, gib board all smashed to bits, plastic plumbing fittings, lumps of 4 x 2, a bale of fluffy insulation, a hard hat and a tin of paint that had nicely popped open to lather part of the road in a yellow hue. All of this viewed from the cab of my truck, just thinking how inconvenient and educational this would be on two wheels.

Made all the greenery chucked onto the road in Monday nights' storm on a night drive down country seem rather tame by comparison.

If I could collect all the guff from the roadside it'd make quite a second hand store treasure trove in a way. Must be about time for a beer...

Fixing central locking that doesn't work (well, works in the worst way, unlocks but doesn't lock) should be an easy thing, after all it's just some switches and motors isn't it. Nope, modern car, switches operate on a circuit board with chips and shit on it, no fucking idea what's working and what isn't, so still broken.

Seriously disturbs me the number of cars these days that are written off not because there is something mechanically wrong with them, but because the electronics has stopped working and it's either too expensive or nobody has enough clues to fix it.

Seriously disturbs me the number of cars these days that are written off not because there is something mechanically wrong with them, but because the electronics has stopped working and it's either too expensive or nobody has enough clues to fix it.

Fucking technology.

We have 3 90's cars. They all have different central locking / electric window issues. Despite numerous attempts by different auto sparkys the problems remain. K'in annoying in otherwise sound vehicles.

Every era has it's new-tech challenges. I had two late 80's Hiaces with the snakes nest vacuum driven emission control system. The easiest way for me to fix it was to replace the lot with a dcoe weber.

That's why it's a good idea to avoid anything involving "new" technology. It's never new in the sense that the industry invented it, but kaizen, by definition has to start somewhere, and it requires faults to function...

And if you think that only applies to Japanese products I can assure you that any manufacturer that hasn't adopted Japanese development and production methodologies has long since ceased to exist.

Pertronix points repacement kit is your answer. No black box, plug and play. Never need to touch them again.
Main market is for performance cars where regs say you can't change the ignition type, pretty sure there's a kit for the A series.

Ya reckon mind you its all personal preference i guess,XY Coons for me had a lovely XYGS which with no foresight i sold just like the XR/XT/XW before it,be worth a good quid these days.Mates got a pretty cool Valiant Coupe but doesnt really float my boat compared to the likes of an XA.Ive a BA GTP which goes/stops/handles etc etc a lot better than any of the many older coons i had but at times feel like flicking it and buying another old one problem is once you start messing with the old stuff it just never ends,on that a bloke a few weeks ago wanted to swap + cash a mint XA ute for my GTP...considered it briefly but XA though mint still had oem 4.1 which would need to go etc etc, cant be bothered with it all that and the Mrs gave me the "death" stare everytime i mentioned it.

No lock motor on drivers door, others when you locked the car unlocked again straight away.

Dismantle door, clean switch on drivers door lock mechanism, replace door handle with one where the lock mechanism isn't wonky, replace electronicy switch module with one that works and as a bonus the drivers window works as well now.

I guess it's now a $1050 car, plus the cost of gas for 2 trips to pick-a-part.

My AU XR6 once a year will have the left front window lower but not return. Only once a year.

Fixed by clicking the switch up down about 30 times ........ sorted.

Last time I pulled it apart cleaned it out with a can of air and gave it a squirt with contact cleaner. I'ts overdue to reoccur so I may...... have fixed it.

The night bulb on my daughters 99 Corolla auto selector has blown. Bloody $1 bulb is buried under the selector works - I can just touch it but not remove. More panels will need removing! Stupid design. A access hold and tidy plug would have been easy as would have been locating the bulb 20mm further south!

Bikes are often the same - removing the rear footpeg hangers off my Ducati - stupidy long task due to access issues. They must have been added early in the bikes build-up at the factory.

...Bikes are often the same...

Radiator fan fuse on 650 blown and so it tries to overheat itself...

so, remove fairings [next bike WILL be a naked], drain radiator and remove to find small stone stuck in fan housing by a smaller piece of tar causing fan to stop rotating and causing fan fuse to blow... new coolant/antifreeze to go in so need to also drain overflow tank... this can be removed by removing/disassembling the rear swing arm upper suspension point attachment! :eek5: Resort to siphoning the old coolant out by inserting enough tube to fill with liquid - don't want to suck coolant into mouth [if I want that thrill will drink Russian champagne]... about an hour later still getting it drained. Once drained, refill radiator and overflow tank, start bike and let it run and check for air bubbles as the manual says to do... then leave idling until fan kicks in to make sure temp sensor switch is working. Once satisfied all is OK, replace all the fairings and in process drop one screw cap into the "workings" and finally retrieve with magnet screwdriver... once finished give bike a wash and take for ride the next day

Went to my local tonight, there was fifteen old women over 80 & three men. We had to wait 50 minutes for our dinner, because they had ordered just ahead of us, no problem there, then, they all had to pay individually, we had to wait another fifteen minutes behind them before we could pay & leave. No problem there either, that's life. Then we went to leave & their rest home coach was parked kind of behind our car, but not so much that we couldn't get out, so we thought that if we moved the car there would be a bit more room for them to get to the coach.
Asked a couple of them to hang on a second so if we move the car there will be heaps of room for them to get to the coach. Oh no, we get abused by a bunch of post Alzheimer's idiots for being rude & impatient.

I used to struggle to pay attention to the elderly. Lately though I really enjoy listening to the perspective. My wife's 93 year old grandfather was a mine sweeper for most of the war, which is interesting. But what is amazing is that he witnessed first hand, the industrial revolution. He experienced the shift from horse and cart, to cars and trucks.
I will happily afford anyone over 60 a bit of attitude. They've earned it.

Ignorance and horseshit, i bet.
:

Coming from you, that just sounds creepy, but apt. You have already proudly proclaimed on this forum your willingness to physically abuse and rape other forum member,s children so it stands to reason that incest and child molestation would be behaviours you would be intimate with.

coming from me? yeah, they did. that's why they're incredibly attractive. long legged and slim. real heartbreakers.

now, away with you, peasant.

Yeah Robert you are a real tough guy. With nothing at all to worry about.
Because sending messages to multiple different people saying how much you would like to rape their children is actually often thought of as being hilarious in NZ, so don't fret no one will do anything about you at all.

Trust me telling you to look over your shoulder after you repeatedly tell multiple different people that you want to rape their children is not a threat, its reality.
Also the fact you repeatedly send messages to multiple people saying you want to rape their children is not your personal information. nor is your name when its given out on your profile page dickwad.

Speaks the truth here.....Just like the trolls could well be a case of learnt avoidance also like never starting a debate with Cassina unless you have a couple of days to spare lol

JAW and I stumbled on what looked like some covert hook up action once.So upset at being interrupted by what was some awesome rolling comebacks on our part the 'Lady' still bent about it revisited the post 3 weeks later and gave me my only negative Rep with a serve on top via the comments. My only one to date :crybaby:.
Didn't look bad to me but different people different views aye.

Im sure I read on here about someone getting their arse Neg Rep'd off by a lady scorned..

My guess is if a hooked up bloke wanted that type of stress he would turn off his tablet/Laptop and go do something to annoy his partner.
