Ok where did every one disappear off to?

Bike's got a new home on friday and dont want to make it dirty again :bleh:

Once the new bike is acquired, usual riding habits will continue!

Ok where did every one disappear off to?

Only Jcxss and myself turned up to swarm.
Report to come.

--kasper

I was keen however I was not even sure if the ride was on. Is it always planned for the meeting point to be on Mondays at 630pm in front of the Auckland Library? Is there a rain date/day (eg Tue) if weather on the Monday night is poor?

Maybe this ride can be setup in the Meetings & Events forum?

Cheers.

Meet is always 6:30 in front of library. Most mondays there is someone there, some other nights there are people out swarming too, just keep your eye on this thread.
In the even of poor weather, please take two HTFU pills and call the doctor :doctor: in the morning

The spirit is willing but the body is weak.
Destroyed myself on the dirtbike on sunday, and the cold weather has meant my muscles still aint fully recovered. Mainly it's the muscles on the top of my thighs giving me grief, so i dont trust myself to hold the bike up securely
Hoping to be back up to it for NASS tomorrow night tho :D

scalding hot bath followed by a nice tepid almost cold shower is soooo nice.

I'm talking about the temp of the bath being such that it take 5 minutes just to get in. Great after a long day at work.

Simon
8th June 2009, 11:27
Hrmmm. Is there any adjustably on the hornet forks? Worth a service and fresh oil? I find its not tracking as well as i'd like. If it was my push bike, i'd wind off a bunch of compression dampening, and fiddle with the high/low speed till it had a nice progressive feel...

Or are these simply the perils of a 250 'commuter' bike.

from what I remember on my 2000 250 hornet the forks are not adjustable. the only thing you can possibly do is ask the guys at the shop to change the oil in the forks and add 15 - 20ml extra. the other option if still not hard enough is to look for springs off of a 600 hornet, but those are hard to find.

Ride report: 1st June - Hornet/Beemer Swarm
So it seems that kasper and I are the only person without plans for that monday! We met at mobile on great north road and rode up to titirangi village for a look around then off down town to the usual meeting place outside the library. Waited till 7.20pm when we realise that no actual hornets were going to turn up swarming we decided that a beemer swarm was in order and off we went.
1st stop was Korean pancakes! Yum :niceone: after that was movenpick after that we went back onto the highway and parted company as kasper went onto the southern motorway and I returned home out west. Wasn't the usual but was good, maybe we could organize for a food swarm next time, hopping from one restaurant to the next for some good food and good company:clap:. Oh, who would like to go on rides out to piha sometime? Maybe we could organize trips during the weekends(saturday)?

"the neighbours next door look the type to get upset with a biker moving in next door! Excellent!"
"No, living in Botany Honda is not possible Badger"
"Park bench with eau de cologne of homelessness?"

Hey there Hornetters – Whats your take on tyres? Need to replace the worn front, and want to get rid of the dodgy shinko on the back. I do a little bit of commuting, plus weekend blasts up SH16. Tend to get out and most weather conditions too.

Finally got around to checking tyre pressure last night. hehe Makes a BIG different running correct pressures!
:done:

gijoe1313
26th June 2009, 10:34
Well if you want quality, I always shod my lil'ol'hornet in Diablos, pricey sure ... but they last me 20 000kms and gets around the road with confidence ... so well worth it! If that ain't in your budget Metzlers are okay.

I'm sure others will pipe up with their faves!

Simon
26th June 2009, 10:37
I'd like quality! Anything helping me stay rubber side down is worth while! Cycletreads says $650 for a pair of Diablos. Sound reasonable?

TOTO
26th June 2009, 10:56
I was always very happy with bridgestone 021 on the back and 014 or 010 on the front on my small hornet. Another one that that is very good for the hornets and espessially recommended by the hornet master are the Pirelli Diablos - giving about 20 000km per set, and providing very very good grip. You probably cant go wrong with those two options to be honest.

The two best places I would recommend to check prices and tyre availability with that weird 16' front tyre are cycletreads and drury performance tyre centre. The drury performance tyre centre is a bit far for you but sometimes they have very very good specials :niceone:

gijoe1313
26th June 2009, 11:50
Give Drury tyres a call - make sure its the motorcycle shop, they will give you a sharp deal ... mention you heard it from KB and they sharpen the pencil a little more! :msn-wink: Tell them a certain red camo hornet rider recommended them to you :msn-wink:

Badger8
26th June 2009, 17:40
i always ran a Bridgestone Battlax BT021 on the back, was very happy with it. Dual compound is good to stop the tyre squaring off when commuting and long runs on fairly straight roads :niceone:

Pilot Road 2 without question... I lost count of how many km they did...

Impressive for me, when you consider tyres have lasted two weeks or 1500km...

I know it was over 10,000km, and most likely over 15,000km....

gijoe1313

Ayup, that lad at Drury tyres knows how to sharpen a pencil alright! (That's why I got my complete diablos from him for lil'ol'hornet, and new Pilot Power 2s for the 900, and a new rear for Betsy(RZ350) .. all in one month! :pinch:)

Oh yes, very nice roads out our way for scrubbing in those tyres! Let me know when you are coming down to do them and I will see if I am free to let one of my bikes out to play! :msn-wink:

Hrmm. If my wee hornet was running on three cylinders last night, what would that indicate? Only did it pulling away from the lights, came right once the revs built. She was running fine again this morning.

Spark plugs or leads? Cold carburetors? (it was f**king freezing last night) Bad fuel? (first tank of 91 i've run in a long time)

hahaha, still haven't got my new tyres yet. Haven't spotted a weekend dry enough for scrubbing in new rubber! :)

Possibly just the cold or bad gas, most likely carbs. Mine did this back in the day, was just freshly imported and had old gas with bits of gunk in it. Jammed one of the jets and was flooding cylinder 4, leaking gas out the side over a hot engine casing, FUN!
My first bet would be a carb clean if it comes back again.

I wont go into huge detail about the trip (as it would get boring), but we flew NZ-Oz-Johannesburg, SA. There we picked up a beastly black 1.4L Toyota Yaris, we then cruised our way up to Botswana, drove the Trans-Kalahari highway, crossed into Namibia, saw lots of things in there and then drove back down into South Africa again, back to Johannesburg-Oz and NZ.

21 days, 6,800km (2,500 on unsealed/dirt), 2 bald tyres and crap loads of stone chips later we returned the car. Average fuel consumption was just over 16km/L where the open road speed limit of 120km/hr. Bikes are cheap to run because....??

Quick list of awesome things i did:
quadbiking on big sand dunes, walking on BIGGER sand dunes, sliding down slightly smaller dunes, stroked a cheeta, filled a whole page in my passport, freed a yaris out of sand, found somewhere with so much nothing you can see the horizon in all directions, got a toy lion, talked bikes with biker cousins, laughed hard when cousin's mate had a VFR400 at his place, ate tons of dried meat, ate tons of cooked meat, tried strange types of meat (ostrich ), saw some amazing sights and some beautiful sunsets.

Overall: awesome trip, but. NEED A BIKE :niceone:

Had a snack at BK mission bay around 11.30pm ... kinda figgered anyone would be home so didn't go checking up at the usual meet and greet spot! :sweatdrop

Well been a luvverly day fer a ride, did the Coro loop with an Angel on my lil'ol'hornet. Did it via Kaiaua and a short loop around anti-clockwise, weather was mint until the weather closed in when we had lunch at Coromandel.

Angel did fantastic for her first time around, a real trooper! Stopped at the lookout past Whitianga for the obligatory photo shoot.

Coming home, rained a bit, but being gijoe ... I was prepared for knowing is half the battle! :msn-wink: Wet weather gear stashed in a backpack

Good thing I got my service booked in for Friday! Scott oiler touring kit with double pipette distributors and some heated grips to be installed (sounds like being a wuss to me, but at least I can always have them off!)

Hope everyone else has been okay and getting in some riding! :scooter: :ride:

Well believe it or not, this Saturday/Sunday just gone, I rode down to Wellington just after half past midnight! Driving rain, gusty winds and pitch black! :woohoo: It was basically pissing down apart from a small dry patch in the central NI, I did the National Forest/Ohakune route.

Got to Wellywood just around 7am and waited at a local McDees for 8.30am to roll around before rousting Angel outta her comfy abode :devil2: After some adjustments etc. finally left Wellywood around 9.30am. Yep, any excuse for a ride! Rode down just to pillion my friend up! :innocent:

Obviously you haven't ridden down to Wellington just for dinner and then turn around and ride back ...

Or visit Wellington and then ride up to Tauranga to visit a mate there who was meant to be in Wellington!

Then again, you could end up riding randomly to Gisborne and back ... or go to Sylvia park for a magazine .. and end up at Cape Reinga ... or feel like an ice cream ... at the 'Tron ... pizza? Go to Kaitaia! Subways? Whangarei! Or if you feel like rambling, do a ride around the Forgotten highway just to check out if the mountain is covered in cloud!

Or you could check out the weather at Port Waikato and then head over to Whangamata to see how the weather is over there ... or you could head over to do the Kai mais and Pyes Pa Road and talk to the luvvery DMNTD then head down to do the Rimatakas ... or scoot over to Wanganui to compare the river to the mighty Waikato ...

Ahh I do so love pootlings ... there are many more excursions and wondrous places in our fair green land ... go out and ride and explore! :msn-wink:

Was pootling around the city meeting up with Gremlin who was pillioning Angel and taking the long way home ... in Otahuhu I noticed Big Ol'Hornet hit 50 000! :wari:

Nice little Hornet swarm today, Sharry had her new Hornet CB00F on show (naughty wee girl she is ... Sharry that is! :msn-wink:)

Badger on his steed, TOTO on the Hooligan and me on my lil'ol'hornet. The Big Ol'Hornet was at Botany getting new chain and sprockets and hot grips, and I was given a 87' CBR250R to ride! :pinch:

Rode it promptly home to swap it for my lil'ol'hornet and went back out to meet the group at BP Botany for a nice little pootle to Kaiaua for lunch and back via the Hunuas.

Tried out the hotgrips tonight, found them too warm for me! :sweatdrop even on the minimum setting. Guess I'll keep them off unless I feel the strong urge to switch it on! But the blue LED is so purty

Home safe now, so now come around the camp fire so i may tell ye a tale.
Plan was something like this:Saw a bike on trademe, do a buynow. take an 8 hour bus ride down to napier to pick it up, stay overnight in a back packers, ride home the next day and be happy.

Ended up with: Looooooooooooong bus ride requiring 3 drivers running 30mins late, dude selling it to me went to the wrong bus station, took 15 mins to sort that out. saw (and heard) the bike, fell in love. Got warned that it hadn't been ridden for a while and the battery might be a bit low, handed over the bank cheque and rode 5 mins down the road to my backpackers and slept in a room with 9 others with hair all over the bed

Got woken up fairly early, strapped the original stock exhausts to the back of the bike, chucked my other goodies in my bag and was ready to leave at my planned 7:45 and the bike wouldnt start...

Flat battery. :shit:
tried bump starting it down the road, didnt work. (this bike is heavy me thinks)
tried getting someone to push it and bump it, wouldnt work. (need more speed?)
got a third person to push and remembered the 900 has a choke, got it started!:Punk:

At this point i guesstimated i had half a tank of petrol and i could just get to Taupo, therefore NOT requiring me to ride to a petrol station and stop the bike and then have to re-bump it after trying for the last half an hour.<_<

20 mins out of Napier it starts to rain...
40 mins out of Napier i meet up with Toto! :D very windy, raining on and off.
15km outside of Taupo, bike dies. outta gas. But Toto has a Pillion seat! what a legend! :2thumbsup
Ride to taupo, pick up gas, ride back to bike, ride back to Taupo.

Have some BK for brunch and plan to meet GI Joe somewhere along the way and start heading towards Cambridge...

Rain, Wind and Cold. Needs me some heated grips i think!
I check my mirrors as we are going along and all of a sudden a Ninja appears! Now we have three big daddy hornetto's. Quick stop at a SuperLoo and the Mighty GiJoe leads us northwards following ancient back roads long forgotten by Cager-Kind. Eventually join back up with SH1 and do the long drag home with a quick pit stop and refuel at the Takanini BP and a Mars Bar for warmth. The Ninja Gijoe then stealthy sneaks off and Toto and me continue into the city and i finally reaching home and a SPA POOL :wari:

Things i've learned:
-Toto and GiJoe are awesome, give them lots of green bling!
-Hornet 900's are awesome, but are a pain to bump start when they are cold.
-Heated grips and waterproof gear are required for future cross country excursions in winter.
-The fuel light on the 900's DO NOT flash when they are at extreme low
- Always start long trips with a full tank
- The screen has gotta go...

HUGE props to Toto and GiJoe again for keeping me company, you guys saved me big time.

Now i'm going to go turn my bike on and listen to it rumble at idle!

EPIC! I can't think of any better reason for a motorcycle trip than picking up your new ride*

*and when you've got spare gas; when you want to go home the long way round; when you're bored; when you're perfectly committed to other things but riding seems like a good idea, etc.

Aha! A new hornetter flies into the fold! Hmmm at the moment, a bit of a hiatus on the rides (it being cold, wet and other diddums feelings)

I would be going out for a jaunt, but it seems I have been bespoken for already!

Will see how I am placed for next week (and yes, these hornet swarm rides are usually on a Monday ... though also known to continue on other days ending in "y")

Mate, if I could I would have kept my 250 hornet too. I for sure will own another one one day. The fun is so totally different compared to the 900. And the 250 hornet usually outrides the big ass sports bikes in the twisties.

I distinctly remember doing the twisties with a bunch of ZXs, cbrs and a few GIZers, got to opononi pub...all the "Superbike" riders are complaining " ohhh my knees, ohhh damn those twisties"...and I was sitting on my little white princess shouting "C'mon then, who wants to do that last bit a few more times".

250 hornets are a marvelous bikes. I suggest you enjoy it to the max as you will always think of that little bike when you get another one. And I speak the truth

Had an interesting day today:
got woken up by an SOS call from my dad, he was doing a Duathlon (run, cycle around the track, run again) at the Pukekohe race track and had forgotten his cycle shoes! "you have 45 mins to get there before i finish the run and need them!" :shit:

Get the shoes, eat a muesli bar for strength and hop on the bike, start heading down the motorway. reach pukekohe town and cant find the sodding race track! eventually find it, make a dramatic entry making lots of noise and get pointed to transition (where they swap from running to cycling) and get the shoes in place with 3 mins to spare! :done:

After watching him do his race and finish, get told my reward is a tank of gas :D and 'do you want to try and see if we can get you to be a drafting buster?' (someone who goes around the track to look for cheating) and do a few laps around pukekohe? Sure!

sadly no luck, (they already had cyclist dudes to do it) so no laps for me, but i have now taken my bike onto a race track! (for 4 meters )

K-road
Ponsonby
Devonport
Takapuna
Highbrook
Mission Bay
St Heliers GP

and a quick slurp of lychee slush at Blush with accompanying accoutrements of french fries, beef skewers and a platter of samosas and spring rolls. We nattered on about stuff and for the first time ever at Blush, a live singer! He did a funny rendition of Frank Sinatra's "My Way".

A wee bit of rain, a wee bit of wind ... but I'm riding and love it!

Okay, so, to answer the questions...

I haven't disappeared off the radar intentionally, I had about 6 weeks of overseas travel, and then I returned to mayhem at work (which has necessitated no goofing off during work hours. And when I get home, I want to spend time with my dog and the endless list of fucking rennovations...

So, did the trip of a lifetime up to Ew-Rup. After saving for about 1,000 light years, finally had the dosh to head up there. My girlfriend was up in Holland doing research (for some months actually), so I went up there to perhaps show her the light about how great Godzone (and Madbikeboy) were. Surprisingly, a woman who is smart enough to study her PhD, wasn't immune to my charm, and she agreed to come back to NZ with me. I think she missed the dog.

I missed out on the Nurburgring (fucking rain in Germany) on some really cool new toys, but got to see some really weird stuff - mad bikers on naked litres, racing through the Parisian night. The motorcycle stores near the Arc D'triumph. The mad as scooter boys - in Italy, they worship Rossi, and inbetween grabbing their crotch when a female is near, they ride with reckless abandon in the best Rossi style; overtaking on blind corners, usually one hand on their dick.

Germany is pretty cool, but everyone rides like they're on their learners test. Italy is pretty cool, and everyone rides like their asshair is on fire. France is pretty cool, and I'm going to move there with my beloved in the next few years. Since a GSXR and pave mix like oil and h20, I'm going to find me a na-ked.

So, short story long, she said yes, and we're getting wedded in Feb 2011.

GSXRTrace, MsKABC, TOTO, GIJOE, Sharry, Badger - this means I can no longer attend your key in the hat parties that I grew so fond of. :)
