People ride together with a consensus of how they will behave, what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. Being irresponsible, endangering others, or being a total dick are not what it is about.

Then again by the way QKCHK and QKDIK are spealing they might start charging us for attending their ride? Or do you guys get a tax write-off for "donating" your time?
Haha, I look forward to your firey response :dodge:
For someone who DID have a good interest in the ATNR, you disappoint me. :whocares:
It is a know fact that either myself or Qkkid have only missed approx 4 meetings over a 1-1/2 year period, not bad eh? Obviously we do close it down over the Xmas holidays - we need a break too! :zzzz:
We spend our spare time (and there has been plenty of times when I too, have wanted to stay home after work - doing a 12+ day on the road) and HAVE to turn up because we organise the ride. What is the point of organising something if you can't commit to it? It is certainly alot easier for a 'part-timer', like yourself to 'just turn up when it suits you'. It's these kind of comments that make me want to throw it in...........

Haha settle down love I'm only stirring the pot, what happened to the endless pages of Mark and JSG bashing? Where has the love gone?
I work 100 + hours most weeks and don't have time for riding any of my bikes let alone attending rides. Last year I was a bum living off interest/dividends/etc so I had plenty of time.
If words are enough to make you want to throw it in then honestly, and this isn't shit stirring, you're already half way there. If 50 + bikes are turning up, there is your indicator of whether or not you're wasting your time.
BTW you're husband is hitting on me through the rep system, make him stop!

Regular attendees and newcomers please read -
JUST SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER:
1. When parking up @ Westgate, PLEASE park in a manner that we can fit as many bikes in as possible and keep entrance/exits clear for other users.
2. NO SMOKING onsite @ Westgate (it is a petrol station) Smokers area up on the hill behind the servo.
3. Please put all rubbish in the bins provided onsite
This has been requested by the Shell Station - they are happy to have us there but please be considerate to other users.
If the ride does become too big/no parking we will look at moving down the road to a empty carpark......

HI all
What a fab night out (newbie new here)
Just a quick message to say thanks to the people who organise this, certainly blew a few cobwebs out of the engine and me.
Unfortunatley about 2km from home I had the pleasure of chatting to your local constabulary who was determined that I had been speeding in front of his very nice pretty brightly lit up car that I completely failed to notice until he turned on his christmas tree lights and turned around to chase me.
Oops !
However I can happily say that after a lot of head bowing and apologising he LET ME OFF !!! 74km in a 50 ! is that good ?
However, apparently if he catches me again it'll be a $170 fine !
So a good evening all in all
Cheers guys
I probably wont be there next week but the week after i'll try to clean out the HD and hopefully make it all the way around (without breaking down or getting a puncture)
anyhow i've waffled on too long - see you all soon and thanks again

40 bikes left Shell Westgate and we picked up a few more along the way. Must of been a few guy still trying to get out of the dogbox for forgetting Valentines Day, not as many riders as last week.
Theres a couple of pics from last night on the first post, so people can see what they getting themselves into.... ;)
BTW Always make sure you have the pillion seat LOCKED down firmly before going on any ride. Nearly lost the seat on the road, luckly it fell down behind my back and managed to do a James Bond thing, hold onto it and pull off the road...

As I told Qkkid, I enjoyed it more in reverse. I felt it gave you as a rider a clearer view of the driveways and anyone exiting those driveways a better view of riders on the road.

From the 22nd March (first ATNR after daylight savings) there will be a change of venue. This has been decided on a few factors (by a few of the senior members), one being that the Speights Ale house are no longer supporting us as a group and the new bar is willing to look after us. The new venue will be, (drum roll please;)
BAR AFRICA More info here (http://www.viewauckland.co.nz/info_pubbar_6427.html)
1B William Pickering Drive Albany (about 5mins up the road from the Speights Bar) See map below.
This bar is ideal due to being close to the Northern and Western Motorway access. There is plenty of parking and they have Pool Tables and a Gaming room as well. They have a HUGE outdoor garden area to accomodate even the biggest groups :niceone:
So remember this is from the 22nd so next weeks ride will be the last at the Speights Ale House.

Yeh, shame about the couple of offs, but thems the breaks.
One real issue I have however is the number of people that just stop in the road when someone comes off, this creates a real hazard for those that are coming up behind you and will only make matters worse.
If someone bins and you want to stop, can you at least do it away from the corner so you're not a hazard to those behind you.

fortunately the rocks have been moved....... not far though.
they are now just in behind the fence.
next door neighbour came out to see if we were ok. She said its a bad corner, cars come off the road all the time, and they end up through the fence and half way down the paddock!!!! so possibly the rocks are not aimed at us, and are aiming at writing off cars.
maybe a process for a Bin? ppl who know the way, stop and help. tailend take note of who stopped, but rides on so pointers aren;t waiting for 20 mins.

Good ride tonight guys. Hope the 2 lads who where introduced to Disco corner are OK.
Yes we had another 2 binns tonight but hey before you nazi lot start to come out and preach just remember that motorcycling is a numbers game - We have a high number of bikes doing 90 or so kms each week so there IS going to be a bin or two.... What mistakes others make we learn from (well hopefully)
.
The last right bend on Red Hils Rd that is marked with a 45kph warning sign (Disco Corner) is a bit tricky. It starts ok, but goes severely off cambered by the apex.
If you take a line from the outside (LHS) seal edge and slice as close as possible to the centre line you miss most of the bad camber at the apex as you are at the top of the crown on the road at the apex. By starting at the seal edge you have a good sight line through the corner.
Now by as close as possible to the centre line I mean as close as you are comfortable with having regard to the conditions. You have a reasonable sight line, so if nothing is coming you can cut right next to the line if you want. but BE AWARE of oncoming traffic.
Of course the old adge "Slow in, Fast out" is a good one to remember here too. If you are practising that, you will be slow in, then ok WTF and you can change it slightly to "slow in, slow out " - far better than "fast in, oh fuck that hurts"

just a thought.
I agree, if a whole host of people stop (not it isnt necessary yet still happens), then the group should split. 1 person head off as a new tail end picking up all the pointers on there way so they can all get on with their ride, then the second group organize themselves as a separate group and ride as usual.
But hey, I had a bloody good ride last night, stayed on my pointer a while after tail end had gone through, the roads were clear, the sun had gone down but there was still good visibility. perfect.

Sure it does, but do you slow down to the recommended speed on each corner where one is posted?
Well if you do you are the first rider I know that does.
Given that people tend to exceed the recommended speed as a matter of course, they are not to know that this one really needs to be heeded - hence the fact that we have lost at least 4 bikes to this corner.

That's just one corner I can't take fast, so I'll usually slow down and nana around it at 45ish, this seems to work well enough :D
Yes - it's easy to over cook that one. No shame in "slow in-slow out", a big problem is identifying the corner for those not on the ride so often.

Oh totally... the only way I can think to help with this would be to put a pointer on that corner to show it's a hazard, but then where do you stop? Pointers on all dodgy corners and we'd never get anywhere...

Hey TS, Make that 2 then (We met a couple of weeks back) although its the 45 kph and below that start getting my interest, in fact, the lower the posted speed the more interested I become and I usually ride about the recommended speed - Especially if I dont know the road or conditions are a bit tricky eg. Group rides, Sunstrike, Dark, Wet etc

More, my point sir, is that what I am advocating is I believe (and I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong, hell this is KB, I will even be corrected if I am right) simply common safe riding practice for any given corner (on the road). So there is no need to identify the corner, if you take those lines you will complete the road and wonder what corner we are talking about.

ok - I'll be the one to correct you.
I like to think I take those lines/follow that practice... mostly... but I find an abundance of bikers gathered shortly after it, having a wake over some freshly destroyed plastic does tend to give it away.

If anything you should go below the recommended speed of that corner, IMO its wrongly rated as a 45, last night i wasnt hooning and checked my speedo on the 35's on peak road (before last straight), i was doing 95..
For some people the only way you will learn that corner is to come off. first time i did it,i went in way to hot, and nana round there everytime now.
Another point is that its at the start of the ride, the group is fairly bunched, so why would anyone go into a corner way hotter than the guys in front of them?

EDIT i was perfectly keen on wednesday to practice doing downhill slaloms along a wet flush medium with emergency stops thrown in... no-one else was keen..
But back on topic, there is nothing more that can be done. Everyone is told that they are riding at their own risk, they are warned about the corner, most people do nana it round there. All else that can be done is to not do redhills road, which I don't think should be an option.

He said his front wheel slid out - he was not going fast - he was fairly upright.

One real issue I have however is the number of people that just stop in the road when someone comes off, this creates a real hazard for those that are coming up behind you and will only make matters worse.
If someone bins and you want to stop, can you at least do it away from the corner so you're not a hazard to those behind you.
Yes, when there has been an accident in the past it is human nature to all stand around and have a gander on whats happening. This is not good, why?
1. If you came off would you like people staring at you (specially if you were injured) its embarrasing enough as it is, let alone a huge group
2. A large group of bikes hidden around a corner (funny enough thats where the accidents happen...) is another disater in the making specially when they are still on the road/shoulder.
3. Large groups attract lots of attention :Police:
I know people like to help and want to be involved but 20 bikers on the side of the road is a bit ridiculous and dangerous. In the future (when) someone binns it can we have just enough people to help push the bike to storage/load trailer or van and in the bad situations people to attend injured rider/s.
For example: 1 rider comes off, bikes busted. Rider is ok.
If there is 4 other bikes there (enough to load the bike into a van/trailer etc), carry on and let the pointers know what has happened and how many more bikes there are to come through. Continue your ride and report to ride leader at the next re-group. This way we don't have people getting left behind and they are accounted for.
If it is a nasty accident (bike vs car etc..) or if there is debris/obstacles blocking the road. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure that there is someone on either side of the accident to warn oncoming traffic! This is SO important and one of the no.1 rules of First Aid. Scene Safety. And if its a bad accident could someone let the ride organiser/leader know so we can organise the ride and manpower if needed.

Unless there is a major accident there should never be more than 5 people there and 2 of those should be involved in warning other traffic to slow down.

Mark you wouldnt be able to handle a ZX10. Let alone ride it properly.
From my recent experiences with one, not only do you have to be a half decent rider to handle the excess weight, longer wheelbase etc, but a very high level of maturity is required, as simply cracking open the throttle can quite easily end up with the wheel front going through the rear window of the car in front, or you can end up in a ditch quite easily through gassing out of a corner hard.
Get a 400. far easier to live with, more fun to ride, and you can quite easily use its full potential without instantaniously killing yourself.

Dunno about the end being the best bit. I really enjoyed my first ride ever with other bikes and while I didn't get over as far as I have on roads I know better etc I felt "in tune" and the bike was predictible as which is all I can ask for really. I picked up tons from tailing some of the faster guys and learning from their lines. Let people pass which gives me warm feelings knowing they probably gave me a little "thank you" thought and I let them enjoy the ride more too. Agree with most of the posts, while unexpected stuff around a corner can send your plans out the window I didn't feel that I took that corner different to how I took any others and it was ok exept for the bikes stopped or slowing on the exit. I have to admit I slowed too and my first thought was "I don't want to be the ass-hole that just sails on by if someone needs help" but as soon as someone waved me on I clicked that I wasn't helping being on the road there. Maybe a bit about bins in the breifing, first on the scene will of course stop and once there are enough people to deal with the situation one waves others by. Then it won't play on my mind, did they need help or for everyone to carry on? Speaks loads that so many bikes can use the same road at the same time and 99.9% of the time feel really comfortable.

yes all noted but i have ridden a 06 zx10r threw it through some corners at various speeds yes it's a stupid quick bike but being on that old honda has shown me i can survive on a slower bike that taps out at 110kph and still enjoy the ride.
no point being quick if you have no license.
i will get a zx10r and i don't care what people say because i will prove them wrong, not digging at you morcs i respect you as a person, fact is though since soon after joining this site because of my age i have had alot of shit slung at me on these forums, and on the thursday night ride being abused numerous times for so called dodgy passings which i agree were sometimes a bit silly, but i know for a fact if others pulled the same moves which many did to me and other riders ahead of me forcing them to change lines or brake suddenly etc. they do not get givin shit because they don't dare have a go at others thier own age, i'm seen as just a weak kid in a way, and that you can all rant and dig into me all you want because you know i won't do shit cus i'm a skinny teenager.
but kiwibiker has givin me alot of new friends who would rather help me with my riding without digging into me and respect me as a human being, thats the only reason i am still on this site and take all the bullshit from alot of people.
i don't have a go at people ive been cut off on rides so many times it's not even funny.
and if i was older and bigger i wouldn't dig into a younger rider i would try help them.
yes ive givin a fair amount of shit on here because people gave me shit to start with, i spose in some stupid way trying to fit in and be accepted,

I personally dont see the point of "netbashing" any rider up about their skills in riding.
No matter what bike, and what rider, we all have a right to ride to ride on the road...(thats if you have a licence.) If it's safely or not, thats up to the individual.
A little id card saying what type of licence you hold dosent change the fact there are unpredictable situations which do occur beyond the riders control.
Leave the cat fights in the playground. Just enjoy the good things about riding on Thurs nights!! and hanging out with other bikers.

OK guys, after several attempts to keep the Thursday night ride threads on topic, this is the final thread....
This thread is to stay an information point, not a point for discussing crap...
Attempts to take this thread off topic will be met with the posts being moved to PD and an infraction to wash it down.
Keep it clean guys, its not on that thread after thread has to be started on the same topic to ensure a discussion/informative thread stay on topic.
OK, Mod hat off... enjoy the ride tonight :scooter:
edit: I have merged all the other 6 or so discussion threads, please feel free to discuss the rides in there...

What about a cbr600 or something. They still go hard and hold their own but it's lighter and more of a gradual step. Its just my opinion and it dosent mean squat, but i think a riders bike should grow in CC's as the riders experance and skill's grow. News to me (but that doesn't make it wrong..) Oil patches show up to me as a black, very shiney, almost velvet texture- as do wet tar patches.
The DD's I got have the golden lense too - not the dark grey and I find they seem to sharpen the focus... like the "blue blockers" they used to advertise> The miracle's in the colour/filter though - not the make model.
The polarised lense get rid of that super birght "spangle" you can get when the sun reflects off a car or other shiney object. So much easier on the eyes on a long ride on a bright day.

I have brought $45, $50, $10 and $25 pairs of sunnies and all of them have snapped one arm piece off.
Now the $2 pair I brought back in Oct 2003 when attending a funeral..... and they are still going strong. Ok they arent a fashion statement, but they keep the crap out of my eyes and the sun rays out as well.
I have to wear sunnies a hell of a lot due the sunlight actually hurting my eyes. And these $2 sunnies work a treat.
It's the putting them on and taking them off out of the helmet that damages the arms on the sunnies.

The trick for twin headlight bikes is to cross the beams. Unlike ghostbusters, you don't blow up:shit: , but when you tip the bike into the corner, the inside headlight is now pointing more upwards and round the corner.

I'm not so sure that you are doing yourself any favours here. The cheap ones may not actually have a UV rating in which case your pupils are wider because of the dark lense and you let more sun in to damage your eyes. Worth checking before you bargain buy, especially at $2.

appreciated mate i understand youre not having a dig, i wouldn't go for the cbr600 as i'm not a honda man myself i like the kawasakis
the main thing is at the moment unless they impore i do not like the new 636 and have heard from riders about them starting to get very feathery in the front at higher speeds, in reality i in no way need a zx10r for street use no way in hell you could use all the power on the street, considering on the open road a very rarely go above 110-120kph, except for when ive had a new bike and done the tradional how fast does it go routine,
wouldn't be doing that with the zx10 except for down the back straight of pukekohe which in reality by the time i have a zx10 will be paddock with horses running on it.
the thing is i really like the zx10 it's fast but still rideable for everyday commuting (didn't scare the shit out of me) could nurse it round or give it shit bbut very easily nurseable for commuting use, and i just found it so flickable, it felt in no way like a 200 kg bike flicked into corners alot like a 250 if anything it felt alot more stable than a zxr250 and so on and far more stable and flickable than 'the 600cc bike ive ridden in saying that i have only ridden older 600's in the past, but who knows when i get my full and it comes time to actually buy one i may go for a modern 600 and find thats enough for my liking, but nobody's let me ride theirs yet , and i can't do a shop test ride without a full,
maybe i'm just dreaming, i want to get into trackdays,
first call of duty is a plate,(before prices hike up to the $1200 they will be in 2008) then some leathers undecided on one or two piece yet i want two piece because easier for everyday riding , but one piece will be alot better for trackdays i want to do , and it's not like i can afford a one and a two piece set of leathers, and i know if i get two piece i will go heck i'm only going down the road i will just wear jeans and the top half. well i would rather put on one piece considering 2 of the times i have crashed have been within 1km of home,
embarresingly dad saw one from the kitchen window(got home and he was laughing extremely hard , i was too because it was a silly mistake (new tyres , had to throw it into a corner in a hurry hoped it would stick but hit the slick part and down she went, yes i already knew all about slick new tyres.....long story lol).
damn am i babbling tonight, and i'm meant to be fixing my r/c monster truck, (too many esses up the street sideways , stripped all the teeth off the gears in the servo, **whoops**) , hey i have no license gotta pass the time LOL.
up shut now will i, were you as.

Hey i am a skydiver and a biker. Wylie X put out these sunnies/skydive goggles. They are real good at 200kph as i do that most days out of a plane. When u buy them they come with clear and tinted lenses that are interchangeable. But wait theres more....... You can wear them as normal sunnies or you can take the arms off and clip a headband straight onto the hindge where the arms you have just removed clip on.
I sometimes wear them when riding as having no arms dosent apply any uncomfortable pressure to you temples. They wont budge because as i say i freefall with them at terminal velocity. Also they dont fog up.
A wee bit pricey at $150 to $200 but like i say sunnies and goggles.

Where would I get a pair from? And are there cheaper ones than $200?

Anyone wanting to donate a couple of bucks, see here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=46554). Get the money to me at the end of the ride/at the pub and we'll make sure it's passed on pronto.
Just think of it as buying a beer for the man.

if the ride is cancelled, does everyone still go for a drink??
YES, go to Bar Africa in Albany, if you can, bring something for Kerry and his wife and kids who have just lost their home and everything in it in a fire in Wellington. Clothes, shoes, toys for the kids, cash, etc.
Kids are 2.5 and 6 yo.
See here for the thread

The weather's cleared up 100% and the ride is still on for tonight!
Let's see the rest of you 'part-timers' turn up who were too CHICKEN to ride in between the showers last week......... would of thought you must all melt in the rain!
Couple of things to remember tonight:
1. Please change your visors to clear - I wouldn't recommend riding tonight till Daylight Savings in Oct with a tinted visor!
2. It will be a bit colder tonight because of the darkness, so wrap up and keep warm. :cold:
2. Change of venue starts tonight :Punk: - We are all finishing up at BAR AFRICA - Corner of William Pickering and Omega Place in Albany (See map at the bottom for directions..) Those on the ride tonight, we will re-group after the initial ride and go in convoy if youre not sure where to go.
3. Bring some $$$ Gold coins for a donation for a fellow KBer who lost his worldly goods in a house fire. See MacktheKnife for more details (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=985319&postcount=2250).
See you tuff lot at Westgate - Same time as usual 6.30pm!

I think the cheapest ones are $100 to $150. Any skydiving outlet will sell them or you could look them up online. I think rock climbers use em too. Give me a call if you have any trouble as i can buy them from work on your behalf if you get me the model no u want. ill get u the price.
Good luck.

..........yes :dodge:
Still cant figure out how i managed it, straight line, in the dry, nana'ing it, shortshifted first gear into second....and bike goes sliding down the road...
Got quite a buzz sliding in my leathers, til i saw the bike doing the same thing...
Anyways, like disco said on my behalf, many thanks to everyone who came over instantly and helped me out. much appreciated.
As for the bike... mirror gone obviously, not a major. fairings all down left side have minors cracks and scrapes as well as the tank - nothing a bit of painting and plastic welding cant sort. The biggie though is the air duct inlet which runs through the steering head - any impact pretty much causes it to cave it... speaking of which - Deathstar hurry up with the price for that please :D

was it because of the gravel? I don't know which road it was, but the one with all the resealing done on it (in patches) I came up to a corner started breaking before the corner and locked up the front wheel, lots of back brake and virtually no front .shat myself looking at the side of the road then realised i'd taken off enough speed to go round corner. Target fixation is a bitch but managed to remember I can turn the bike. lol

phenoix has bought an 07 zx6r now, a bit of a waste of a bike because i know from living with him in the past he hardly ever rides, i hope he rides this one more, and more importantly, gives me a play on it lol.
