Sweet, checked his two blogs and I will follow with interest to see whether he manages to have some "real" NZ experiences!
If it's not raining stify and I might come see you lot this Thursday...
:niceone:

Yeah - he's a top man. A funny guy. Need a lid, gloves and leather for him though. A medium - anyone out there able to help?

OK - a kind offer from a Stranger means Jonny's set to ride. The weather forecast is looking good and he emailed me confirming he's keen. And best of all - come Thursday I'll be able to shout

"Heeerrrrrrrreeeeeee's JONNY!"

See y'all there and then!

Well..........(melbournes) St Kilda thursday mystery ride sux - they just ride around the city through bumpy streets and stop at lots and lots of red traffic lights -the bike over heats, i overheat, left hand gets tired. though i was told last night by some of the regulars that it was a disappointment and its usually not that bad - so hopefully next time the leader will choose a less interrupted route.
I miss the ATNR.
BUT
i am yet to explore the mountains, i hear they surrounded by some awesome roads!!!!!

Awesome ride last ride Guys n Gals! Perfect conditions if not a tiny bit on the chill side but with summer just around the corner we will be able to enjoy the cool breeze of afternoon cruise!

Just a heads up for next weeks ride -

1. Since there is shiteloads of roadworks on the 'usual route' we might take a detour and head up to Walkworth (same route as the Anniversary Ride) BUt this will be WEATHER PERMITTING. Will annouce what happening the day before....

2. Tinted Visors. I know its getting brighter as we come into summer, however please take in to consideration that if we do the planned route for next week, maybe bring a clear visor since it WILL be dark after we leave Walkworth.

Lets keep our fingers crossed for good weather next week - I dont fancy riding over the roadworks and having my bike covered in lime.......

Just come out dood, really, and if your worried about the pace just nominate yourself TEC. I did the first 2 times I went out, and once after that when I felt like a ride but just a cruise, get to know the roads and no pressure.

and if the plan is what I think it is you really should come on the next one! That or EJ will just be able to PM you how awesome it was and you can wish you were there again?

Glad you enjoyed the ride. I felt last weeks pace was spot-on, I thoroughly enjoyed myself even tho I have been doing the same roads for more than 2 years now! Goes to show it WAS a great bunch of riders eh....and there is no need to worry about the other riders being faster/slower, just find a spot in the pack even if you start off just infront of the TEC (Tail-end Charlie) and work your way up the group. No-one is out for a race, IT SHOULD be about the ride and the social side afterwards..... :yeah:

You can bring your mates and get them to bring their mates. Just got 1 houserule.

1. Don't endanger any other rider by either cutting them off or by being blatantly stupid.

As you know I give a short brief before we take off and if you wanna do warp speed, you can (at your own expense). Everyone is reminded of the risks involved. I dont care who comes as long as they don't endanger anyone else and they enjoy their ride. See you on Thursday, the weather is set to be awesome! :sunny:

Just a couple of things:

We will be having dinner up at the Bridgehouse Lodge in Walkworth, not at Bar Africa (this week only)
Could be a presence of Roadworks. Parts of the usual ATNR are in gravel/limestone however we should miss the majority of it this week. (With all this good weather they should be sealing the roads sometime this week)
Second mention about Tinted Visors. Feel free to use but take into consideration that we will be having dinner at approx 8.30pm so IT WILL BE dark when we leave the premises. Probably wearing sunglasses and a clear visor wouldn't be a bad idea.
Rant Over. :msn-wink:

What colour was the undercover??

Seems like there's a whole new batch of assorted unmarked cars in the Albany area now. :2guns:

Let's start a new consiparacy theory and say that every Cop now has the salary sacrific option to get a "Company Vehicle" and as long as they write $1000 worth of tickets a month they get free fuel too.

Complete bullshit of course but I'm sure it wouldn't take long for this to become part of KB Folk Lore - "Yeah everyone knows that; they've been doin' it for years" :2thumbsup

Anyway on the serious side it's now at a point where I have to think that every car is an unmarked cop car because there seems to be so many on the roads now. And the real scary part is you don't even know they're there until you see them pull someone over - but that's the whole point I guess - Score 1-0 to the cops:argh:

Was at the pub tonight, and saw a cop car drive up. Parked on the other side of the road in a driveway, and waited.

Some poor newbie was followed by cop car...not sure what happend weather he was pulled over or not...but he wasnt doing anything wrong when he left.

Then saw cop car patrol the area hardcore!! as well as what looked like an under cover car..

Yeah they did mention it in the AWNMR thread. Someone got busted leaving BAR AFRICA (in a car and not one of our guys) last Thurs night just before we all got there. I think he may have been given a free ride to the clink for DD. So they are in the area but if you behave there's nothing to worry about. :innocent:

I think he came around the corner too fast and got a fright when he saw us all down the bank picking up the ZXR and rider, he then clipped my bike and another bike parked off the road before he took a tumble down the bank too. It was a fucker of a corner though, it was downhill and the camber was off.

Rueben thinks the guy in front of he suddenly slowed because of a car coming in the opposite direction and he had a choice of hitting the bike in front or sticking it down the bank.He reckons ,now he chose wrong. He couldn't go around cause of the oncoming car.

Unfortunately, I witnessed the whole incident of the Gixxer in my mirror.

One thing I MUST point out here is:

If someone comes off their bike, PLEASE think of YOUR safety first! Your'e no good to a person who has just come off, if you end up laying in the paddock next to them. As in last night my personal opinion is that those bikes that were hit were parked in the worst spot possible. Pretty much side-by-side and right at the exit point of a corner on a blind corner. Imagine a car coming around the corner instead of the Gixxer, the car would of wiped out the 2 bikes completely! I feel that the "Gixxer" was not entirely in the wrong and I will back him up if need be.

If someone comes off, ride past the incident site (get off the road completely if possible) send someone back up the road to warn oncoming bikers and always be cautious about being on the roadside. Common sense is your best friend.

The bikes were lined one behind the other and the tyres of both bikes were on the white line to the left side of the road 20 metres past the corner, not side by side as "seen in your rear view mirror". About 15 other bikes came through and did not have issue.
It was the bikers speed that was the cause of the crash.

QKCHK, I'd say I'd have to agree, I came through about 6 bikes after the 'bin' and those 2 bikes should not have been there. I know that both of the riders are insured and I think in all fairness they should claim on their own insurances - I think they were both at fault to some degree and it was just an unfortunate incident.

Always a bugger when someone comes off, I came up to that corner a few moments after the ZRX went into the ditch, saw the cloud of dust and grabbed some brakes before turning in because I knew what would be happening next...

Even after slowing down I had to swerve almost all the way to the opposite edge of the road to get around all the bikes being randomly stood up and panic-braked.

I'm not at all surprised that someone behind me stuffed their bike into a parked one and joined the first guy.

I second Qkchk's comments; guys, please, when someone bins, hold your line, ensure your own safety and the safety of those behind you, don't panic in the middle of a corner just because a bike in front of you goes ditch surfing. Nothing worse than bikes taking each other out on a ride.

Anyway, apart from the little mini-binfest, that was a fucking mint evening and ride last night, no better way to end a day.

Top marks Qkkies!

I'd have to disagree with that mate, and Dawn too... so long as the bikes were parked past the exit of the corner and on the other side of the white line, I see nothing wrong. They were only stopping to help and there were blind corners one after the other so pulling over too far away was out of the question. I have been in this sort of a situation more than once myself.

Whose ever bike it was that clipped the two bikes should not have been nailing it so hard so as to not be able to stay on the road. I believe speed was an issue here.

Hence, I was riding slowly... nevertheless, Hedgier1, Qkkid and JRandom appeared to be having a tough time passing Vale on his 600 puddlejumper until he backed off on the straights and let them pass ? Muaaahahahaa

If so, you really should appreciate that your first course of action should be to secure the scene and ensure no one else gets hurt.

For example, if there were twisties either way as you describe, did 2 of the first bikes there take the iniative to post riders both in front and behind to warn approaching motorists? Or did they simply run around like headless chooks?

Ok, I wasn't there so none of my comments are specific to this case, however they are relavent in all cases.

I wouldnt say headless chooks, more along the lines of "too eager to help". One of the worst things that can happen if you are one of the first to come across a crash scene - Tunnel Vision. One can become so focused on helping someone that they can forget the basics about looking after No1 and things can turn nasty real quick.

I hope at least we can all learn from this unfortunate experience. :yeah:

If my recollection of the road condition is correct, there was only a <1ft strip on the outside of the soild white line so it seems a bit suspect if the bike was said to be parked on the left of the solid white - but hey what would I know, I only saw it happen 20M behind me in my mirror. So it would be interesting to go and have a look at how wide the tar extends out to the left of the left soild white line. Cause who in their right mind would park their bike stand in the loose gravel on a slight downhill slope? But hey at least we are getting constructive now.........

Its prob the same reason why I decided to stop where I did further down the road cause the gut feeling was "Shouldnt park here its too close to the line of fire" and that is the honest truth.

yeah where we were parked was not a good spot. The zrx1200 binned right in front of me and I pulled over to see if he was ok, I wasn't thinking about my bike, just the dude in the fence...

It looked like the giiixer just took off sv's indicator and my mirror - no real damage.

To be fair, when he binned, we slowed down (he was right in front of me) and pulled over at the nearest spot, on the exit of the corner? Perhaps, but you'd have to be riding pretty damn close to the edge to come anywhere near the bikes.

Stupid place to park, stupid place to bin. Everyone was in the wrong place on that corner! Let this be a reminder to give the guy in front and behind you a good cage length of space.

On a side note, I think that will be my last ATNR, I haven't been on many, but its just too big. Whats the bin count at now? It will be pretty high I'm sure. ~0.86%, your more likely to sleep with someone with chlamidiya (sp?), if it was at the Outback in Hamilton, 10x more likely, if it was in the Outback in the 'Tron with Carver 10,000x more likely!

The point that I can see is most accidents (and I have been involved in reserching accidents in outdoors pursuits) is that very few accidents have ONE cause. Most have 4 or more contributing factors that were all needed to have the event. I'm never saw the bins and don't assume to have any idea to what happened but would encourage people to think through what they need to do in emergencies maybe when your in the shower and relaxed. It is alot better place to form some ideas in, if the first time you've had to consider your actions is in an emergency they will be very clouded with adreneline and emotion. Also, there can be trucks, cows, gravel etc all over the road. The thing being hit isn't as important as the fact that it got hit. Again, planning and knowing your limit. Target fixation too is a major.

Hope everyone involved has intact egos and wallets and friendships too and glad there are no Doctors bills to be paid.

Have to add that the bins I have seen on the ride havn't been regulars and they might forget others know the roads a bit better. Very handy when the road has ripples and holes on the exits of lots of the corners.

See you punks next week!

That's the spirit Raj, in true KB tradition, someone will always be there to argue against a patently self evident truth.

As for the new topic of who was to who was to blame for the second accident.
I was not there, so really am in no position to comment authoritatively, however I believe it was the jogger jumping unexpectedly in front of the gixxer.

A good post RM.

As to the second bin. In all honesty, this happens a bloody LOT. The comotion distracts a following rider, they target fixate and by the time they realise what is happening, it's all gone south.

It is not the ride that is dangerous, it is the rider that makes it so. If you choose to ride in a sane fashion you are no more likely to bin on the ATNR

Not true.

You get a large hall and blindfold two people and tell them to run around in any way they want. Then do the same with 30 people.

Which group is going to have the most accidents?

The first accident happened because there simply wasnt enough room on the coner for all the bikes.

So let me get this right, you are saying Not true to my assertion "It is not the ride that is dangerous, it is the rider that makes it so. If you choose to ride in a sane fashion you are no more likely to bin on the ATNR"?

Then you proceed to support my argument by pointing out that it was clearly rider error in your last sentance.
Why would you do that?

The blinfold analogy is really not worth addressing as, knowing you, I am sure it is a piss take anyway.

there is a little bit of truth to both our arguements. Yes it is 100% the riders fault that the accident occured. Would it of happend in a smaller group? I don't think so.

all the ones who crash are muppets i mean heck....

i hardly stay on a bike long enough to call it riding it, and i havnt crashed on the ATNR!

i mean if i havnt crashed on it like...wtf lol

they are not tricky corners.....people just get cocky in groups...hey they can do the corner at this speed i must be able ot too...i will just take a slightly different line oh look i'm running wide oh noes it's beoynds saving think of t3h chidrenz! stand it up on the picks....slides out from under them = one newb (with more soon to follow as they go omg oh noes somebody come off i will look at them instead of where t3h fux i'm goingz! )in a ditch with bike sliding next to them. :buggerd:

as you were :)

That's a little harsh. The guy's been riding since he was a kid.He' got a garage full of motorcycles. His kids have been bought up on bikes and are on their fourth or fifth now.He hasn't binned a bike on the road in over fifteen years,so he's no learner. He might be new to these rides but he's no newb and he's not a muppet. He was a victim of his own enthusiasm, fair enough, but he's feeling pretty stink about the whole deal at the moment and has just reduced the value of his pride and joy significantly. His computers fucked at the moment(like his bike) so I'm sticking up for him while he can't.Let's drop the whole subject and take it as a valuable lesson for all involved and be grateful noone was hurt.

I guess at the end of the day if i'd been doing 30 or 40kms less and traveling a bit closer to the speed limit i could have just dribbled around the corner and popped out the other side with a smile on my face... As it was i guess i had limited my options a little by being pretty committed to passing the guy in front of me. As soon as his line changed (maybe due to the car coming the opposite way?) i rekon i had 3 choices. 1, carry on with what would have been a pretty dodge pass getting close to another rider and a car coming the opposite way. 2, hit the anchors while stacked over and maybe run up the date of the guy in front and see what happens. Or the 3rd option which i thought was the safest was stand the bike up, brake hard to wash off as much speed as i could and take my chances in the ditch on the side of the road. I've done heaps of dirt biking over the years and grass ditch option didnt seem like a bad one at the time. I thought it was going ok until i got sight of the timber post which jumped out of nowhere and planted itself right in front of me! Anyway, shit happens. I dont blame anyone else for what happened, it was all pretty much self inflicted. I guess it'll probably make me think a little harder before commiting myself to passing for a while. Hey and besides, i was having so much fun on the ride the grin inside my helmet was pretty much ear to ear! I should know by now that when my smiles get that wide i should button off a bit... Oh well. Oh and while im thinking of it, huge apologies to the guy who was gonna pick me up on his ute, i should have grabbed his mob number but he had bailed by the time i thought of it. I managed to ride the bike home without too much drama in the end. And also cheers for the hand to lift my bike back up who ever you are. Nothing like good help when you need it. As for my mint ZRX1200R... Ive had the bike for just over 2yrs and its the first time its tipped over. Bugga! Suprisingly the damage wasnt too bad, the old girl actually crashed quite well. The bars are toasted, the tank got a good punch, the gauges are damaged beyond repair and the bikini fairing exploded into a million pieces. The engine cases came thru it looking suprisingly good with barely a mark and the radiator managed to get thru unscathed too. If it hadnt been for that dirty rotten 4x4 post it could have been a lot less i rekon. I think i had got rid of most of my speed by that stage but who knows... Ask the guy behind me he would have got a shit hot veiw! Hey and i rekon he did alright not to get target fixation and sail off the road with me. Anyway i wont let that little mis-hap stop me from riding bikes, but it'll probably slow me down...for a while anyway.

Hey guys, Get over yourselves...... The ride is over and yes there were bins.....So what. It is part of riding a bike. Everyone has one at sumstage. Who is at fault????The rider is at fault.
The Qkkies have done an outstanding job organising the ATNR for ages. Big ups for them.
QKkid was great riding with you again.
Yamahar64life (Raj) get an R1 and maybe you will be faster and be able to ride.
I am not a fast rider.

Ideally you need a loop. The only problem with heading up that ways is that you are limited to routes back.

10 laps of the Whenuapai GP circuit will do nicely tho...

Sweep off the west end of Kauri Rd and get some timing lights. That 90 degree corner on Totara will catch some people for sure! No bitching about traffic giving you a bad time either! Wonder if Westie will poke his nose in here and let us know what his best time is?

For going off topic... HI GP etc...

Oh I tried to be good.

Yeah man they have got the OK to hold two motorsport events there in the future but keep it hush hush. Waitakere City Council gave the approvals but I think they don't want it to seem viable as the debate for use goes on.

Manukau has approval for more runways as needed anyway and is barely at the good economy of scale point without half their traffic getting nicked.

Infratil just set up the business, they don't run it. Build, sell, see ya! Man it would become a slum eh. Hundreds of people working part time for minimum wage, awesome.

I think the only smart thing to do is motorsport park. Friday night drags, car club events, teaching/testing facility. There's a reason why they also race jetboats at Meremere and that international racers won't normally run there. It's a swamp and is all sunken and wavey compared to "normal" strips.

Mega access once the new M'Way is in.

One should not shun suggestions, as at times there may be room for improvment.

No one is moaning about how it is run, but enquiring wether or not a lil tweeking would be in the best interests of the ride. It may very well turn out that it is currently set up perfectly but you will never know unless the question is asked.

The ATNR is something of an institution now. It's fine as it is, and allows for some variation.

If you want to go for a longer ride then fine, but don't hijack someone elses pre-organised event. If yours is 'better' then surely people will follow. But you can start you're own thread for your own ride. Or just organise with people at Westgate who is going North and who is going East at Kaukapakapa and make sure that people don't follow you accidently.

There's no "other" ride and no hi-jacking. I'll follow the group on a group ride and go on my own if I want to do my own thing. Didn't think there would be such a passionate response but written stuff is easy to read a bunch of ways. I think that the qikkies have done an outstanding job for the time the ATNR was organised and they should keep running it. There have been other rides on at the same time and people have continued to do the ATNR. Everyone knows the roads so it becomes a safe ride. Yes there are a few offs but that that is due to people not riding to the road and their capabilities. If people continue to attend the ATNR then they will get to know the road. Personally I love the ride and was a regular attendee when I lived and Aucks. I still come back to Aucks to attend the ATNR and catch up with friends. Mainly I have to say a big ups to the qikkies for the ATNR.

One should not shun suggestions, as at times there may be room for improvment.

No one is moaning about how it is run, but enquiring wether or not a lil tweeking would be in the best interests of the ride. It may very well turn out that it is currently set up perfectly but you will never know unless the question is asked.

The questions have been asked time and time again. There is a reason why the ATNR does a certain route:

I have seen and/or been directly involved in approx 15 bins. Even after the pre-ride briefing, you still have people who 'gotta prove themselves' and 'dont give a shit about other riders' (not saying all bins have been related to this) and by limiting them to certain roads I hope to lessen the risk of bins or at least not give them a stretch of road that they could potentially kill themselves on. Get sick of picking up bits of bikes and bodies.

However, Im not saying NO to a change - as long as we can work it into our route without hassle and it suitable to use for the ATNR.

The ATNR is something of an institution now. It's fine as it is, and allows for some variation.

I hope I answer this correctly on behalf of the senior ATNR members:

Sure, some members are saying 'leave the ATNR alone'. They have seen it before with new riders trying to change the route and meeting place/time etc... The ATNR is based on the 'if its not broke, dont fix it' theory. I know its not fair on you newish guys but as soon as someone else new comes along - do we have to change things to suit them?

Hope this clarifies and not angerfies.........

Crazy, if the old hands are happy to pottle along the same, or similar route each week, then the new ones should follow along. Of course if you came north to Warkworth each week that would suit me really well.....:blip:

Seriously though you say if it is not broke dont fix it, I say why re-invent the wheel?!

:spanking:However we do vary it :niceone: We have lotsa different routes infact i can think of at least 7 varieties of the ATNR that :cool:we take so it is not always the same.

Yeah its the worst time of the year for many reasons - Work parties, tacky decorations, irate People fighting over the last car park and of course the worst thing of all - cheap Xmas Midi's that the Supermarkets play while you try and dodge swarms of people.

Becides all that - The ride will still be on for Thursday night, so you can still make one more for the year..... :niceone: Weather is shaping up nicely too.

Good on ya for joining the Rat-Race! :dodge:

The ATNR would be a good starting point for you, many a friend you will make - as long as you ride safely and dont run anyone off the road ;) We have quite a few Hyosung owners that come along, so it might be a good oppotunity to get some advice from other riders etc..

We have a mixed bag of different riding levels and the tail end charlie will make sure you dont get lost while on the ride. As long as you can do 100kph on the open road, then we will love to see you @ Shell Westgate 6.30pm on Thursday. (Provided it doesnt piss down)
