Speeds have not been mentioned.....you could be done for doing 110kph in an 80kph zone........or 90 through a 50k zone....:whocares:

I highly doubt that... wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where we were going... there was even a cop sat on Scenic drive.

All I can say is RIP Kiwibiker Group Rides. I'll start sorting rides by txt / pms from now on I'd imagine.

Except for Newbie Ride 3 however... weather is picking up so keep your eyes peeled!

Ok, of course. Wasn't there so assumed it was open road stuff.
Just getting pissed off that us bikers seem to be getting targeted. The infamous loop is being done over as well. Upper Bay of Plenty.

Looks like summers going to see a lot less bikers on the road eh? :(

The first thing my Girlfriend said to me was "WOW! I didn't know my bike could go that fast" ... which it can't, or at least the speedo indicates that it wont go over 120 kmp/h with me on it.

Anyway, can't wait to go to court.

Firstly, goes to show just how low some Police will go to bust the public. Secondly, goes to show how much the Ploice watch KiwiBiker to bust its members. Thirdly, comiserations to all those who got pinged and/or lost their licience. Finally, thank goodness I was not on this one, although I rode like a nana last time as I did not know the roads.

And the piglets wonder why the public is loosing respect for them?

That would be great - have a talk to them - have them advise the newbies on how to stay out of trouble, be proactive and supportive. Offer some education on police methods and what the penalties are.
It would be welcome I reckon - the newbie rides are a great idea and model of community co-operation.
The Police should be supporting it.

Well anyone that was pinged was done for license losing speeds... don't think anyone just rode away with points / fine.

Thinking it over in a more calm way, I'm sure they must have caught more of us for speeds that they could have booked us for, but can you imagine the riot that would have broken out if they'd have issued 25 tickets instead of 3.

Remeber the law states you are innocent until proven guilty.
If you havent admittde it, they must prove that it was
A) Your bike that they caught speeding, Radar is too open in gorup riding, you cant pinpoint 1 person.
B)You WERE the rider at the time of aleged speed.
ie, you MAY have swapped bikes to take your mates new ZXR for a ride.
And since you dont know exactually where they pinged you, unless they followed, AND had your in there sight 100% of the time, it is cirumstancial evidance.
Also did anyone check the EXP date on their radar/laser ?
Or the operating permators of said equipment, ther may be a clause about riding close together it can not CLEARLY identify said speedster.

Just my 2 cents, but rememeber that this is revenue gathering and if you fight it, it comes unporftable for the cops and they'll most likly drop it.

Can't be revenue gathering if they let the "mild" speeders go Phenoix.

One of the cops mentioned excess speed claiming that 160 was to fast....they where not interested in those doing 120.

Get the feeling that locals are complaining about the noise [bit of inside info!] more than speed. Something to think about.

Fuck-it I will be there every week...just at a slightly reduced speed!

McJim
9th September 2006, 10:52
A lot of bikes attracts a lot of attention. I would think that that reason is more likely than cops watching this site setting up a sting and plan to bust a whole lot of bikers.

Yep - with the run from botany the first one was seven riders the second one was more than 16 - could have something to do with it after all.

Big Dave
9th September 2006, 11:19
The Police presence on the site is hardly covert. There are blue and red 3 participants whose posts and perspective i enjoy - hardly a secret.

"Fuck-it I will be there every week...just at a slightly reduced speed!"

No Sixpack - don't do it - rage hopelessly against the machine - slowing down a bit is exactly what they want you to do! :blip:

Just a couple of points, as you say there were a number of riders who were being naughty, don't you think thats why the Police were selective in their enforcement using an unmarked car and all. Guess registration plates don't mean anything these days. By the way it is not a requirement to show the locked speed on the device.

No there were marked cars as well and they were just out numbered to snap all who were being naughty so the ones in front got done. Police didn't have a choice to be selective at speeds that were being done on the night. It was basically who ran into the lions mouth first got eaten away.

And yes it isn't a requirement to show clocked speeds under the current Land Transport Act 1998. But hey wait amendments will follow in years to come and soon we will be like other countries.

My point is though you can always dispute that you weren't doing the speeds cops "said" you were going at. Reason being; there were way too many bikes for only two cop cars to keep track of and chances of them making a mistake is high irrespective of the actual speed you were doing whether faster or slower than indicated.

Only in NZ eh...

Proof? We don't need proof, as long as I say you were speeding then you must have been.

What kind of fucking retarded system lets them just write down a plate and say what speed you were doing... given there were 30 of us, in the dark, and the coppers didn't know which bike was which, how can they say, beyond reasonable doubt, that they actually caught the people they ticketed?

A very good point and the fact is that they can't actually fully accurately tell who was doing what speed. True but sad that our system sucks big time. The equipment they carry aren't as advanced as you'd find in USA or UK and the law actually reflects that. Just spent few hours reading through Land Transport Act 1998 and it's dirty obvious that at the end of the day it's the cops word over yours. Sucks but I guess you have to live with it till amendments.

The regular cops on KB have nothing to do with it. Yeah, Spud would tazer his own mother just for kicks so we should probably keep an eye on him.

It's quite conceivable that cops do watch KB and target rides. Regardless, someone seems to always get pinged on TNR's.

We all know that the cops are their for revenue purposes. Either get a radar detector or slow down on these rides. You're making it too easy for them.

Sounds like a lot of you are being too paranoid about the cops. Sure they are appearing on places we ride, but they are places we ride frequently. They dont have to watch the site to know where we might be, but if you do 'the same roads' at the same time on the same night each week it wont take long til someone takes an exception and makes a complaint.

Luckily i've had good karma with the cops and only got pinged for 115 when I was doing 128 (he let me off the 128 as it was a first offence) and also once in town when i had an excessive display of traction resulting in the front wheel rising approx 3ft in the air as i travelled across an intersection.

Quite a few people have the right mindset - "it's part of the game"

Honestly, what makes you think that even though you are doing over the speed limit that you shouldnt be ticketed? Dont beat me up on this, i do it all the time. If you get caught you pay the price. Deal with it.

I will say however that it sucks for those that lost their licences in what seems to be a very dubious situation.

Now, i spent $95 on a track day and $150 in gas and accomodation and had a mint time riding knee down, as fast as i can and reaching speeds of 240kmh+... got photos too but no tickets!!! Sorry, couldnt resist but i did have an awesome time at Taupo!

Unless you're an exceptional rider or in the middle of an urban area with hideholes then you've no chance on a 250.

After 200, its usually classed as exsusively dangours.
Thing is, I doubt a standard 250 would do that.
And you'll also probably get a cop to call in the egale, that means above 240 on the straight, no chance on the back roads.

I would say go ahead with the normal ATNR. Leave from Westgate at your normal time and end up at the Speights Ale House, (those guys have really supported us, dont let them down). You just need to all ride sensibly and the cops will have nothing to ping you for.
Steve Walker, the constable from Warkworth even said, "Hey 110, 120, we dont have a problem with, you guys were all riding safely...its the 140's , 150's were going to get, so we will be back here for the next three weeks or so".
Now, the ATNR is about a social gathering and freindly ride to meet at the pub for a coldie and a yarn. Its not a GP.
SO everyone get your asses to Westgate at 1830 tonight, have a fun, safe ride, the police will be there, show em that they are wasting there time by coming.

I usually do the Thursday night rides.

I wasn't there last Thursday and I won't be there this Thursday but I will continue to do the Thursday night rides as often as possible. As Speedie says, this is supposed to be a social ride ending up with a few nibbles and drinks at the pub. It has always been held as a social ride and I for one enjoy the ride and the company.

Yeh, good luck with that.

If they don't get you for speed, they'll start targetting regos and wofs, once they've done that they'll find those breaking license conditions (ie. more than 250cc etc...).

Why not take the hint that they just don't want bikers going over there?

Get organising! It dosen't have to be you who leads/organises the ride, but just getting people together at a start point and thinking up a finishing place that may be amenable to a few extra patrons... Once the right things are found it will find it's own momentum.

So my posts will stop being generally jovial and I'll start getting abusive?

Have met shedloads of riders on the Learner Friendlys out east already.

I'm an L plate rider with a young family - too many commitments in terms of sticking to the speed limit (70kph) and putting children to bed in the evening. No experience of riding in the dark yet. Will come along when Daylight savings does it's thang at the beginning of October but would just be a liability in the meantime. Should be restricted at beginning of Nov and full licence end of Jan.

Have already promised Qkchk I would turn up one day....and yes..I really am a loud mouthed glaswegian in real life!

Will see how family commitments go to try and get an evening run started in this neck of the woods. Will probably avoid Thursday though in case some socialites want to attend 2 evening runs in any given week.

good to see atleast SOME of a turn out last night..... the rain held out till we reached the pub then it spat for about 5 mins then stopped......only saw one cop when we were at west gate scooping us out from behind the steering wheel of his under cover car......it was good to get out for a ride and streach those legs even if it was just a quick squirt threw riverhead......mark seemed to behave himself and kept to the speed limit and under it.....

thanks to the guys who turned up for the ride and the fellas who came to the pub

I and many others have found that meeting KBers in person changes your attitude and tone of posts dramatically, especially when you are publicly addressing them or a thread they are in...that's why WINJA is still such a blankety blank individual online, cos he doesn't go to KB events, so has hardly met anyone face to face! YOU may wanna think twice or else your online persona may not be so witty any longer?? :msn-wink:

A lot of KBers have met WINJA. I can tell you that his persona in real life is exactly the same as on KB. A top bloke who hates all of my bikes except for the Magic.

A good turn out with a mix of first timers and old hands. Ignoring the inevitable comments on Skidmarks behaviour (JSG returns reincarnated as Skidmark), everyone else rode well and it was a really enjoyable evening.

I don't believe Skidmark will be welcome on one of these rides again which is a shame for him really.

Only one cop spotted, parked up a side road off Peak Rd I believe. It's amazing how much fun you can have on a bike even travelling at legal speed limits...

Look forward to seeing the regulars back next week...:Pokey:

Why??
Surely this is an over-reaction, we all know that he is still learning and has a LOT to learn, but he has improved some and has shown evidence of listening to advice (unlike some others). If we all refuse to ride with him then we cannot help to improve the situation right?
Mark suffers from youthful stupidity, granted, but I think people need to lighten up on him. The 'brotherhood' of riding should be taking a bit more of an interest in helping Mark to overcome his shortcomings I feel.
Constantly bashing someone for the mistakes they make can only make the situation worse, and increase the likelihood of him not listening to advice because he knows it will only be critical and insulting.
Lets try to be a more constructive huh guys n gals?

Only the riders on the ride last night know what Skidmark did.

I was there but I am not going to put it up on here what he did for another Skidmark bashing from riders who werent there.

He apologised to those concerned at the end of the night and as far as I know it has now been sorted.

Lets leave it at that.

Mark is a young lad, and has a lot of energy to burn.... and he just needs to learn to direct that energy in the right direction. He will do that in time, just like everyone else has done.

Skidmark - I accepted your apology and hope you will take in what I said to you.

Definitely agree with you there Mac, no need to give him ear bashing I am sure he's had enough of those last nite he's a young boy and will learn over time. I think he should still come for rides with us, overall a good funny bugger he is ! :)

Well, it doesn't bother me if he rides with us again, I just don't think he'll be welcomed with open arms.

Apologies are great, but he also needs to follow this up with acknowledging his behaviour causes concern to those he rides with and take steps to rectify this. If he can do this, then I will welcome him.

Mark has stacked it on the open rd.
Mark came on one of the Scooterclub rides ages ago on a cheap shitty Chinese/taiwanese monkey bikes.
normally its only Italian/euro scoots, but we felt sorry for him and let him join us.
he was going sooo slow that we had to get him to lead the group otherwise we would have left him behind.
theres a section of tight twisties out west ......and you guessed it . Mark binned it and failed to take a corner.
Texmo saw it.
How can you go that slow and still fall off?

Black Bandit
23rd September 2006, 17:06
He has some good skills on his bike - certainly a more capable rider than I am and alot more confident. I think he just needs to work on his behaviour when riding in a group. The worst thing when group riding is not knowing WTF the rider in front/next to/ or behind you is going to do next.

Mark - I really don't want to be guessing what's going to happen next when rounding a corner at 100 km/h!

Don't ban SKIDMARK - The rides would not be the same without him:whistle:

Keystone19
23rd September 2006, 19:01
Nobody is bashing nor banning Mark. The comment was that he may not be welcome. You are exactly right when you say he needs to work on his group riding skills. I think the major issue is that for some of us, we've been there before with another rider, it makes one somewhat cynical. For what it's worth I personally like both Mark and the other rider. I just don't want to see anyone getting hurt either on or off the bike.

Why in the name of all that is ungodly would anyone be rash enough (and I deleted out several other words before settling for rash) to deliberately go on a ride that they knew the plod were targeting?

It seems to be to be height of folly.

I will always go considerably out of my way to avoid the plod. I cannot understand those foolish enough to put their heads into the lions mouth.

And do not tell me that humbug about "if you obey the law you have nothing to fear". I've seen that go wrong all too often.

Sorry all I missed the ride, work commitments.
But you dont need to do 180 on the straight to catch the group.
Dover may do it, and Dover may have lsot his liences a few times cos of it.
But do you look like Dover, god I hope not, ones enough.
There are markers at each turn, so you dont get lost, tho it seems it still happens.
Unless your were tail end charlie, there was still someone behind you, thus still in the group.

you will be loosing your license for longer than that..... and one hefty fine, cos you will be off to court.

So why do you need to keep up with the bigger bikes.....?????
Oh thats right you are full of TESTOSTRONE.....
The faster and bigger bikes always wait for everyone at the designated stops... so why rush......

When you sort out the testostrone you will realise that you dont need to be up the front with the bigger bikes.
I believe someone once said in a post somewhere on KB...

Unfortunately there was no pre-ride briefing last night which probably led to the unfortunate circumstances of the group getting split up and the bulk of riders being led by a rider who did not know the roads nor the Thursday night protocol.

I blame myself for this. I could easily have done a briefing but didn't.

That being said, Devil, Jonny Rotten and myself were tailed by that cop for quite some considerable time and were not stopped - for the obvious reason that we were obeying the road rules.

Oh well, ride at your own risk. There are sometimes pressures on people to ride faster and I have been victim of that too (despite my age, sex and wisdom). Most of us know the cops are watching this ride, but Lukelin250 may not have.

Good catching up with you all at the pub again. Bad luck luke, when I saw the blue and reds i was wondering what the hell I'd done wrong until I saw you zoom past after i pulled over! I wouldnt beat yourself up about it Keystone, we were talking about the rozzers targeting us at the start of the ride and saw at least 3 markeds zoom past as boomer said. Nobody was forcing people to do excessive speeds to find everyone, the lost group passed the pub and any lost riders could have simply done what black bandit did and pull in there. Agreed with MDU though, I may have been a bit over, but I dont have the guts to go any faster than that, I like my licence.

As i posted earlier I followed the lead rider off towards the wild blue yonder --looking forward to a thursday night ride with the crew.
It all started to look a bit pearshaped when I looked in my mirrors a few minutes in to see--well actually not a heck of a lot.
We stopped at the normal turnoff to old north road--and waited --and waited and waited.--Im not the most patient of people so I headed back to see what the holdup was.
I got back to the servo to see -once again--NOTHING.
Well bugger this thought I --Ill have a good toodle in the country with keystone--BUT alas--I got back to old north to find myself alone again.
I headed on up old north at a "quiet" pace.
and like Forest gump --I got to the end and I kept on goin -and goin and goin
Till i found myself in the fine lil town of Mangawhai
At one point I felt a lil er heat behind me so I thought perhaps staying the night in Mangawhai wouldnt be a silly idea.
I gotta tell you folks a dawnbuster ride down the mangawhai road is something else. The roads are empty and the traffic--what traffic??

I'm the fellow who came back for you on the loud black bike and your welcome dude, also you could try a fake vin, rego, licence and name.
seems easier to just not get caught though. It sounds irresponsible but if you really want to go for a ride, pull out a map, there's plenty of hidden roads you can do what you like on without a pig in sight. i dnt have the right licence and have been caining around on big bore bike for ages, and only got caught when i was doing what you were doing- fanging on main roads. Remember mad max 1 and go do what the fuck you like (just without the gay ZXR compulsary mohawk). In spite of the fact I have not attended an ATNR for nearly a month [bike trouble!] I have observed the ride proceed without any designated leader/leaders.
Clearly a great social ride but not without Police issues resulting in many lost licences and tickets.
The ride can and should continue and in my opinion needs some form of leadership [rotating?] to debreif and guide participants around the designated route at a more licence freindly pace.
The main obstacle to continuation is impressing on newbies the importance of not speeding, those of us that have attended a few ATNR's have witnessed first hand how anal the Police are about speed control and realise 'cruising' on this ride is not an option but a prerequisite.
This post should not be read as criticism of an individual's action but rather an observation that if the ATNR is to continue succesfully change is needed.
So how about it? if the Qck's don't turn up leadership could be designated to perhaps Keystone,Frosty,Blackbuell, Myself [any other senior members willing to put their hands up?].
Some comments people.

Here here.
I agree totally
I wouldnt class myself as a senior as I'm always getting lost.
I havent attended the last few due to bike trouble and work comentments.
Guidence is essintal as this is a SOCIAL EVENT not a race.
We spend more time at the pub than riding.
There will always be "speeders" but what needs to be pressed is there not the pack u should follow.
They know the risks, and have lost there lience on more than one occasion.
Its more about making it too the pub and enjoying ones self

Hi There,

I was thinking about coming along this thursday as a first timer, but am concerned about the police presence!!!

Roughly how big is the "precautionary" group that brings up the tail and keep their licenses?

Oh yeah and how many riders in total do you usually get along to a ride?

Cheers

The cops are only stressfull when your speeding.
Numbers vary from 10-40
Come along for the social side.

They dont just pull over everyone.
They grab the speedsters, which has so far been mainly people doing over 20K over.
But thats not a certainly.
Just stick to the limit.
The tail end charlies are usually good.
ANd its the pointers that help out, at every turn.
On occasion when people have got lost, someone has gone looking.

There is a pretty simple system that has been used for ages, most people know it, if you don't then ask, if you see someone who is a new face then explain it to them.

SPB what is this senior member bullshit? how do I get my senior member KB sticker, I think I've only got a junior KB sticker :buggerd:

Who care's about the Police, same with anywhere, you speed and its illegal so you'll likely get caught. Pick your moments.

They dont just pull over everyone.

Funny, that's exactly what they did when I went.

You ever think that when they can't get dickheads for doing 180 (or whatever), they'll start doing people for 120-130, and how soon after that before they get to 111kph and you're booked?

From what I understand the cops up that way don't want bikers up there, I'm happy to oblige, plenty of good roads elsewhere.

Easy or not newbies in particular do not read the thread or take warnings on site seriuosly, this results in virtually ever week some poor soul loosing their licence or getting a large ticket.
Impressing on them at the start of the ride how militant the cops are on this particular ride would go a long way towards stopping the tears.

have you ever been on a ride????? dont speed?? fuckin hell do you wana ride with everyone or by yourself buell and dover fucking stupidity??? yeah right it was on the longest straight possible i wasnt endangering anyone or risking much just catcing upto the group.......
I would be very careful what you say and who to on this thread. To enlighten you, Blackbuell is one of my main senior riders and has been doin the ATNR more times than yourve probably had head. I would advise an apology otherwise stay clear of the ATNR. We have been doin these rides long enough without a learner trying to tell us all about it.

Hmmm just goes to show how many people read the thread PROPERLY eh? As myself and the senior riders on the ATNR have many-a-times expressed, you speed at your own risk! Its called LOGIC :motu:

Apologies for missing out on what sounds like another ride annoyingly stalked by the coppers. Probaly wont be there this week either, gonna save my arse/bike/energy for the big ride up north on Saturday.:chase: Anyone is welcome to tag along for the ride but do so at your own RISK. Im not gonna hang around and clean up after ya like I am consistantly doin on the ATNR. If you cant ride at 100-120kms without being a dick or at even that speed, stay home. S I M P L E

What we really should do, is find a cop car and have 30 bikes just follow it around for awhile (After making sure everyones Rego ect is current)
Freedom to ride where we feel, it just "happens" to be the same roads as a cop is on.

Prob not a bad idea. They like to follow us around, so why not play at their game? I dont think there is anything they could do about it.

Seuoooooo Log onto forums at www.PolicePatrol.co.nz to look for patrol/cruise threads, then organise it on KB?

But the cops are watching KB, so they'd follow the group that follows the cops that follows the bikes and ....

The mind boggles!

Phenoix

And hell, it would be funny.
Espially if someone brings a camera to show the speed the cop car is doing, ie are they speeding ?
It'd be worth the tickets to match speed with the cop car.
Then publish it to the media and use the money to pay the fines and a shout at the pub.
