What we really should do, is find a cop car and have 30 bikes just follow it around for awhile (After making sure everyones Rego ect is current)
Freedom to ride where we feel, it just "happens" to be the same roads as a cop is on.
Sounds like a good idea but its STUPID, poke the bear with a stick and you will get eatten. Do you think the cops are stupid.
It may be true that there's nothing they can do, but how would you enjoy every time your seen your pulled over for a license inspection, vehicle check, or just a chat. I'm sure they can do THAT with no problems and it would sure take the fun out of riding.
My two cents or is it 10 now.

do I need to dignify that question with an answer??

With a long weekend approaching, I'm guessing that there will be an increased "presence" on the roads towards the end of this week.
Perhaps the reason the Muriwai to Mangawhai ride had a visitor at the beginning, since the police leave is (presumably) being saved for the coming weekend...

Are the cops stupid? huum lets see, they get paid approx $40,000 a year to get beaten, abused, puked on, threatened, ruin peoples days and have to wear those fantastic baby blue blouses- oh thats right they "serve and protect the community" protect us all from those scary bikers who fang aroung on desserted roads and don't endanger anyone but themselves.
Or you could be head of homicide, he gets to hangout with corpses for $65,000 a year. Are cops stupid? well their not the smartest civil servants out there thats for sure, take a paramedic- they have to get a degree before they can work. Now lets consider traffic cops, the lowest of the low, even sneared at in there own ranks. What do you do all day "well, i point a plastic gun at cars for hours and hours and...." you get the picture. Please don't for a minute think i'm being harse, they reap what they sow. Surely at some moment in time on the side of a highway somewhere the traffic cops thinks to themselves "am i sad?, do i have a life?, is this what being a cop is really about?, am i pathetic?" Well no they don't ask this, and why?- because they are stupid. Hope that clears that question up.:shit:

Um. Not all that many TRX850s around, I'd guess. Less still around Dairy Flat way. Glad I don't ride one. Mistaken identity can be a real pain.

I was wondering last night, why the cops take such a bashing?
How many of you out there have been written a lesser ticket than you deserved because the cop was allowed to use some discretion?
I know of 2 within the last week. And I'm sure you know of many others.
I think it has been said on this forum many times, if you get caught speeding take it like a man (no disrespect girls) and own it, you knew what you were doing... And thank God if for some reason the officer was feeling nice and let you off lighter than the law says you deserve.
And final thought, how much cheaper would it have been to head to Pukehoe for the day instead of on the ATNR.
Treat the ATNR as it is meant to be, a nice cruisey way to spend a Thursday Night, where you might make some really great mates.

Well that's what astounded me, they don't have to show you the laser readout! Apparently it's ok, because if they say that's what you did then that's what you did.
Forgive me, but if you've decided that you don't mind being paid for booking bikers on a dead road in the dark with nobody around then I can't trust your judgement.

.
I was being subtle. I wonder how many people who get a "lesser fine" actually weren't clocked on the radar properly. After all if a cop's just done you a favour the last thing you're going to do is call him a liar.

:zzzz:
Agreed 100%... but with a little cunning you can have it both ways.
Wait till the ticket is written, and then ask to "just check the radar".
If you are being accused of something the evidence needs to be there. If they have indeed done you a favour and booked you for less than the indicated speed, thank them.
If they don't have a speed on the radar or it's lower than the speed indicated, ask them what's going on and challenge it. There's nothign wrong with calling for another cop, or contacting central if the cops trying to do a dirty.
I'd be very surprised if they were - but hey.
The_Dover
18th October 2006, 09:37
that's the issue Nige, they are under no obligation (legally or morally) to show you a speed on the radar. fuck, they don't even have to have a "locked" speed, just to have seen the numbers flash before their eyes.
pack of cunts.
i don't do subtle

But if you decide to defend it then it's some extra ammo. I wasn't doing that speed so i asked to see the reading and he refused. Might not be a deal breaker on it's own but might make a difference........

Hey NIJANANA, this is why they get a bad rap, because they suck!
Normal cops are nessasary but traffic cops are just useless morons collecting on behalf of Clark and Cullen. With out normal cops they're would be anarchy.
But come to think of it that might not be so bad- remember Mad Max?, escape from newyork/la?, judge dredd? and Blade runner etc?
FUCKIN' RAD! - like road rash but for real. That's it fuck it i'm off to throw chains in the wheels of boy racers, if you see any burnt out wrx's or skylines with half charred corpses in them on your way to work tomorrow- That was me.

I'm getting fucken sick of reading this, I've been on a lot of these rides and I have NEVER seen anyone 100% obeying the speed limits. As I've mentioned before, speeds of 200 kmp/h + were not uncommon on the ride. This is why it has the attention of the police. A leopard can change colours but it will never lose its spots and this is the Police motto - regardless of what you are or were doing. Same route. Same people/bikers.
Just like with Gangs, some might say they're going straight and doing good for the community, but the Police will never leave them alone. Same applies here.
and how many houses in Albany get burgled on a thursday night?
Look it up http://www.police.govt.nz I think it averages out to 1.3 or 1.5 a night for the North Shore area.

Fuck up about the Police you old bitchy woman, not everyone is closed minded enough to canvas an identifiable group of 'people' with the same ignorant opinion. Some Police are dicks some aren't. Just like when you walk into a supermarket, some cashiers will be friendlier than others. Fact of life.

i did the ATNR on tuesday with a mate and our mate in the blue mazda 6 was out there potroling as usuall i motored on past him at about 120kmh and he didnt even batter an eye lid.....niether did his mate further along the route in a black holden.....so im sure they have there days when there out to get some of us and days when they are just after the high speed speeders...... as the copa said awhile ago "we dont really care about the ones goin 110 to 120 its the 120 plus guys we are after" and " we dont mind you guys having a lil fun as long as its safe and not stupid"
good luck to all that go along tonight....look forward to hearing all the storys at the pub

Ive been trying that mindset for ages now, but some still dont listen.......... At the briefing I have always warned about speeding on the ATNR "Do so at your own risk" but unfortunately some dont take this on and then suffer the consequences. What can you do? The ATNR can be highly enjoyable even at legal speeds so I dont know what all the fuss is about................

good to see everyone at the pub....decided not too ride this ride has too much cop attention now and with my 95 demerits i'm not keen on going into a bears cave and poking it with a stick...while it's hybernating.
anyways after heading home from nsr-dans place....saw a massive accident on the motorway inbetween market road and greenlane southbound...silver car overturned massive side damage and on it's roof.
2 marked cop cars one undercover all with lights going....a fire truck...not sure if there was an ambo or not...
cops talking to a bunch of guys...
just woke me up to what happens when something goes wrong... first major accident ive passed has shaken me up a bit...maybe what i need to sort out my riding...seeing it on the tv ad woke me up a bit but seeing it for real ...yeah feels weird.... i want to know what happened though as it was a straight... unless they were being chased by police and tyre blow out or something...or police rammed them?...could have been any multitude of things i don't want to make assumptions. if any attending officers on here or cops in the know are able to give me a rough idea?
well will see what happens will most likely see you all next week...

I think it was "Crashe" that followed me up the end of the northwestern into the gas station as I needed to get gas. I was on Honda VTR250 (my commuter bike). One of these days I will come along for the ride if I can get home quick to bring out the SV. I am always on my way home from work when I see you guys. Next time will stop and say gidday in person. Yeah sorry I didn't stop... I was going too, but perhaps became a bit shy and just rode on home. Yeah would rather ride my SV1000S as I get bored riding the 250 since I ride it everyday to work and back... perhaps I am just spoilt with the choice. But yeah will make the effort to leave work earlier and go home and get the SV and come and meet up with you guys within the next few weeks.

Hi Guys,
It appeared to my wife last night that if it had been me that crashed, nobody on the ride would have had a clue who to contact in the event (Yes I did fill in the Emergency contact when I registered on the forum - but being a neewb do you know I am-ok the avatar might give it away but seriously that might takes hours for someone to realise - not having a go at anyone???).
Even the police would take a while to work it out as I doubt any of my Next of Kin contact details are correct on any databases back home in Australia.
Needless to say I now have a nice little print out covered by sticky tape in behind my license with emergency contact details, should something bad ever happen.
Only took me 15min and it should mean that my wife will find out straight away if anything goes wrong rather than worrying why I've been gone for so long.
Cheers

Don't have a Nokia, but my k750i is pretty well protected when I ride and the ICE idea is a good one, done that. Also carry a medical directive which includes pertinent medical info such as allergies, current medication, (none for me), and emergency contact details.

Hi Guys,
It appeared to my wife last night that if it had been me that crashed, nobody on the ride would have had a clue who to contact in the event (Yes I did fill in the Emergency contact when I registered on the forum - but being a neewb do you know I am-ok the avatar might give it away but seriously that might takes hours for someone to realise - not having a go at anyone???).
Very good point NN. I think we have been lucky so far with binns, we usually have known the rider or they have had a buddy/somebody knows them. Probably a good idea to carry some id (Well it is law now to have to carry your license) but as in your case - Some updated info stuck on the back of your license or elsewhere isn't a bad idea.

It's a different way of showing affection for another living human being.
Some people dress up as Elvis and sing like him too, to show their admiration and interest for the person he was.
We're not that sad when you put things into perspective, really.
When we go around dressed in one piece leathers wearing socks and sneakers with holes in our gloves ringing the neck of our ZXR 250 with 2 inch chicken strips, talk non-stop and act like a clown in admiration and interest for Mark, then (and only then) may you call us sad.

I sit my restricted on Friday morning though so next week I'll get to see what 100kph feels like!

Hi all. Just thought I would take the time to say thanks to those that pulled me out of the trees Thursday before last.
Especially; a big thanks to Frosty for collecting my Beemer and the lass (name eludes me) that gave first aid before throwing me into the ambulance.
It was my first ride out with you guys, and not my last, but I am thinking there will a few months break whilst I get bits and straightened and roadworthy again.
I'll try not to make a habit of injecting so much excitement into the rides, last time I stepped off my bike was over 20 years ago :oi-grr: so I'm hoping next time can wait as long again.

he crossed out the higher speed and then wrote down the lower 160 so i get a better deal at court,,ill try post it up if you really are that keen. or just bring it in ohhhh wait 26 days now./...
Food for thought....
So the cop caught you at 180kmh but put 160kmh on the ticket.... Courts rule on the evidence/facts: You weren't riding at 160 as the ticket says - you did 180. The facts differ from the officer's notes... so you may have a legal defence in Court to get off the speeding ticket (which I assume was a traffic offence notice, not an infringement notice).
I'd write to the PIB and suggest they drop the ticket/charge given that the cop has not used the correct speed. It may save you your licence.
Don't get me wrong, I support the police, but if they do this sort of thing then it can be defended against. They have been told not to do it becasaue they may (will) lose in Court.

true but since the ticket is the fact i probly cant dispute it saying he radar said higher, although on the ticket he did make a muddle of writing down the speed cause he wrote 180 then wrote 160 over the top of it,thus making it look very muddled and messy, maybe that invalids it? . still i dont think saying i was ticketd doing 160 when i was actually doing 180 is a smart legal move, maybe they will just say that means a bigger fine if i actually admit to doing higher speeds.

true ....
I understand your point about making an admission.... if you know a lawyer who can advise you on the case law, it may be worth it if you are facing a conviction and loss of licence (and possibly your job?).
The police were told to cease the practice of writing down a lower speed on a ticket because it would risk them losing the case in Court if challenged - The speed indicated on the ticket was not the speed actually being done and may therefore may be invalidated. That is all I can recall sorry.
The issue would be that you were not doing that speed and the facts the police would use in Court would indicate an untruthful speed. You should need to specify the speed you did, but the cop will have to be honest and say that the speed he caught you at was not the speed indicated on the ticket and therefor you have been ticketed incorrectly.
Having said all that, if I may say so, the decent thing to do is take it on the chin, because you were exceeding the speed limit by quite a margin! I was merely pointing out a legal option for you.
