Very keen to turn up for a blat this week. Been busting to join in for ages, just haven't had the spare time. Where is 'Shell Westgate' - since I don't know Auckland that well (actually some would say I don't know shit about anything....)
Where abouts in North Aucks are you? I'm in Albany and can meet up with you.

Hi Qk'ies,
I'm thinking of turning up as this will be my last ride before the bike is picked up on either Fri or Sat morning.
I'm curious:
With 10 million bikes turning up - do you have a "110kmph" group that doesn't stop at every intersection and 100kmph group with all the 2nd bike stopping rule?
justsomeguy
24th January 2007, 10:18
Its alright SPB, I heard that the ride is cancelled for the next three months anyway
If you had shut up about it instead of crying in public you could have sneaked the odd ride in and no one would have known, now......

Fuck off cock, If you had seen my bike and where i live, There is absolutly NO point in riding it, Just WAY to obvious.
If you do actually go on this ride, maybe we can "discuss" it at the pub

I'd suggest that you be more worried about Mark turning up on some mangled death contraption than a spot of rain.

The ATNR rides as a 1 group but I can see what you getting at.......... time will come that the ride will be too big for itself and for me to handle. What will we do? We may have to make up 2 groups. But at this stage until I can keep my hair and my sanity it will remain as it is.
For those who do not enjoy 'doin pointer duty' have a thought for those new to the ride and how once you too were fresh.
Wise words of the ATNR:
"If everyone wants to enjoy the ATNR they too must sometimes sacrifice their ride to do pointer duty. If you do not point, the next guy (who may not know where they are going) suffers"
Weather should hold for tomorrow - Fingers X'd. :yeah:

Good turnout - big barn of a pub.
Apologies to anyone that witnessed my little moment when my anchors didn't provide quite the stopping power I expected at a one way bridge. Managed to avoid hitting anyone so no harm done and a lesson learned.
To the rider on the Black Bandit 1200 - was behind you a couple of times on the run - either you use engine braking all of the time or you need to check your brake light - I could be wrong but I never noticed any changes in your tail light at junctions.

Lol, there's a Hyosung 250 that has a permanently on back brake! But just a note McJim, I rarely use my brakes due to the VTwin engine braking, can be misleading for people following me who are expecting me to brake and I don't. I often warn people before a ride so as they don't get too close - mind you, that's if they can keep up in the first place...

The one-wheeled salutes were great as I got past (over and over again - nice). Made me miss my old gixxer - but glad my licence is fairly safe nowdays.
I enjoyed my lawn cutting sojorn after discovering the more limited steering range of the cruiser. Thanks to a fat-ass tyre being nice and stable.
It'll be good to meet some of the slower riders at some stage who cruise along a little more.

Yeh, that's a bit of an iffy corner for sure, I've personally see a couple run off that corner, and more than once gone into it too hot.
One thing I did notice last night was that the people that came around that corner and saw the crash were then slamming on the brakes and stopping right after the corner. On a ride of this size, it's really not a good idea to be stopping in an area that will be a danger to those following you, if others have stopped to help then carry on, or if you wish to stop, try not to just haul on the breaks, instead indicate and then pull over where there's space.

I couldn't make the ride so I grabbed two of the kids and stood on one of the known intersections. They waved at the bikes - had a chat to Noel (who is very good with kids btw...!)
Heading home Mia decided she liked the fast yellow bike at the front (Dawn...) and the one that "made a farting noise" when it went past. a GPX I think it was.
All good fun.

Some of us will learn, and some of us have. When the cop came past us there was a group of at least 7/8 bikes doing only 100 - 110.
Those that don't learn will continue to be fined / lose licenses until they are not able / not willing to ride this ride. Darwinism mate, those who don't wish to ride sensibly on this ride will sooner or later stop coming.

So was it the Ginga with the beard (Hilton) or was it the same guy that was in the Mazda6 the last time they pulled this stunt (Andy C****, the fuckwitest fuckwit i know). He has darker hair, short cropped, slim build caucasian, about 176 cm tall.
I will have a hunt through my tickets and get both their numbers.
In any case you guys wont learn that they scout that route. The last run in with them was when they stopped us all and took a few licences... thats the last time I did a Westie Thursday night ride.
Could not agree more. I loved the Thursday nighters, not just the ride but the socialising afterwards. Alas if fuck knuckles like Mark auckland did not turn up, someone either bins or the pigs ticket the unfortunates.

I dont come because either someone always bins it, gets lost or the cops are waiting around every straight. It is very frustrating and not at all enjoyable. I like the pub at the end.
True enough, but then the thursday ride does seem to contain a higher than average number of newbies.
I always ride sensibly, that is not the same as riding to the posted limit.
On a ride where there are known to be coppers around I'd say you were wrong. Whilst I may not agree with some of the speed limits around they are the law, and if you choose to break that law you have to live with the conseqences. If you depend on your bike to get to work and back, I'd say speeding on the thursday ride is indeed less than sensible.

Sorry guys love ya all but i got a few things to say
This is not a personal attack to any particular persons we are just letting you know how we feel okay.
We will say it 1 more time for those who dont get it. This is a social event ending at a pub for a feed and a chin wag , you do not have to go at break neck speeds to have fun, you can do under 120km and have a ball with all the twisties/roads we do.
1/ WTF? That incident was nearly 4 months ago whoopydo no big deal :nono: harden up its not like they are spending all there time waiting around for us :Police:
2/ We have alot of regulars that come on the ride. They are not all newbees so talk about something ya know. Yes we have newbees that come, whats wrong with that"get a grip" you once were a newbee
3/ Markaucklander has never bothered me,and i am in noway defending him but dont use him as a excuse to run our ATNR down. I have been doing this ride with QKCHK for over 2 years. We have alot of fun on this ride so If you dont like it fuckoff Dawn and i are not interested in hearing your bullshit.
4/ We care about the people who come on our rides. We dont have bins every week either. The roads we do have alot of variety and there are some bad corners that can easily catch you out, so yes you will have the odd binn and yes We do try and vary the route :shit: For what it is worth we have introduced into our ride 2 new shit hot roads:love: what the fuck would you really know  YOU have not done them. The ride is now 87kms long:Punk: We hardly ever see those that bitch about it.
5/ We are constantly getting 50 plus bikes on our rides ,so i guess the numbers speak volume:yes:
6/ I have never had a ticket in over 2 years doing this ride, so it can be done. Dawn hasnt had a ticket either, so there goes that theory of too many cops hounding our ride. And we are there every Thursday nite all year round. I am not saying i wont get one, but i probably deserve one, probably more than one, but we always say at your own peril if you choose to speed.
7/ We put alot of effort into this event, Support it or fuck off , we are not interested in what SouthAuckland ride does and we dont post in it. They are not binn free either and its a small group or riders. Anyway its none of our buisness or right to critisize or give our viewpoint on the way Dovers thread /ride is done. How about all you wingers out there do the same, or better still organise your own ride and turn up to it every week. It takes a little effort.
8/ I personally ride at the rear of the group sometimes in the middle of the group and sometimes lead the group, and i have started at the back being a pointer and gone through the pack to the front and in all that time I have never been close to being hit from behind or had any close shaves with anyone in front of me. The only incident we have had was with a certain JSG and he was told to hit the road (fuckoff) and yes we do talk with the people who have ridin issues we just dont post it all over kiwibiker okay.
9/ Lastly a bit of thanks wouldnt go astray instead of negative bullshit. And last of all dont tell us how to run our ride, be constuctive not destructive. :corn: Its comments like we see on here that give perception and it creates a false perception of the ride and all the hard work put into it.:yeah:

I guess the Markauckland comment was directed at me.
He is a talented young rider with barley a single functioning brain neuron, and he is dangerous to be around. A fact backed up by the numerous negative comments from many others virtually every time he rides, further more his behavior does not change. I do not want to be around Mark or anyone like him.
My perception [backed by numerous personal experiences] is that the cops target the ride. A major ticketing exercise I witnessed was so upsetting for many the ATNR was left to its own devices for many weeks, the organisers clearly upset as well. And the ticketing continues still.
Again my perception of bins is based on reality having witnessed a few over my time, and read about the carnage.
I decided not long ago that since for me personally the ATNR was not working, I could at least meet friends at the pub afterwards . On the couple of occasions I have the pigs are still sitting on old Albany highway when I go home; it ruins the night for me.
Understand that perceived negative comments are based on frustration that makes it less than pleasurable for me to attend the ATNR.
I am not sure what I can do or say to convince the organisers [qkwk's] that my comments are not negative nor targeting them or the ride. Taking freindly constructive comments personally is something I have no control over.

It seems to me that you northerners need to try a different tact. (I ride in Sth Auck)
Obviously you have too many riders (IMO) and the trouble with that is that others are not used to the riding styles of anyone else. If you don't trust someone's riding in a group, you won't enjoy the ride much or at the least, you'll avoid them like the plague.
You also DO seem plagued by the pigs.
My humble suggestions; talk personally or by PM to those who are riding much faster than the main group and suggest they organise a ride to a different location or on a different day. Post that the ride is a slow, medium or fast paced one but don't post where you're going at all (Thereby not giving the pigs a clue). Decide or inform at the pre ride meeting point just where it's going and try to leave in different directions so the cops don't get used to your route.
Personally I ride quckly but don't like going too fast.
The difference? Riding quickly can mean sitting on 100-120ish on the straights but not slowing down for the corners. Riding fast means exceeding the speed limit by a considerable degree like doing 160-240kph; I value my licence and life too much to do that often or at all.
On the Sth Auckland ride I sometimes like to go more quicly than the others but usually only for a small part of the ride. When I feel the urge I go off ahead by myself and that means others are not around to be endangered by my speed/style etc. However, when we hit big straights and 'some' amongst us twist the throttle and hit big speed; I generally am happy to let them disappear into the distance knowing that I'll catch them in the corners or they'll be waiting at some intersection.
Our sth Auckland rides vary from 6 or 7 bikes to about 25 bikes. Usually however, the ride splits up into fast riders and more sedate riders; none of us seems to have an issue with that or with the way others ride. The difference is that we generally know the riding styles of all our riders and know what they'll do in any given circumstance.
With 50+ ridiers I suspect that's impossible on your rides.
Anyway, I hope you figure something out, I've thought about joining you for a ride on occassion but I'm also put off by riding in a large group amongst riders I neither know or trust to be close to.
The last time I did so was with a Ulysseus run. I wasn't a member, just invited. I hated it: too many differnt levels of skill, speed and adrenaline to ride together safely. I too prefer groups of half a dozen or so and prefer riding with people I trust through experience.

Sure there have been some bins, but there needs to be some perspective. The ride has been going for a couple of years and regualrly attracts over 50 riders now.
The ride is in reality no different to any other, you are no more or less likely to bin because you are on the ATNR.
That said, you are more likely to be see or hear of one on this ride due to the numbers. If this upsets anyone, buy a cage.

Good onya Quicks for organising this ride... yeah there is a few neewbs on the ride each week, but riding with those more experienced is a great learning tool... ...as riders become quicker and more experienced they start getting closer to the front of the pack and learn from even faster riders and get better etc etc... The only gripe I have ever had as a 'newb' on this ride is the odd person zooming past me too close giving me a right old wobble. Always a small minority in any group of people that have to show off/go against the flow. I dont think newbs are a problem at all on this ride. Keep up the good work!
The quicks have always made it very clear regarding speed on these rides, if you dont have the restraint to keep your speed clean then what do you expect the police to do? ...sets a bad example to those learning.

As Jonny rotten mentioned, the only ones knocking are ones that don't attend. - there is nothing that needs fixing.
You also DO seem plagued by the pigs.
So what? At least we are aware of it. Like any other hazard, ride to the conditions.
My humble suggestions; talk personally or by PM to those who are riding much faster than the main group and suggest they organise a ride to a different location or on a different day. No one from this ride has complained (have they?) about mixed speeds - why fix something that isn't broken. Some ride quite fast, they never upset me, some ride too slow - I wait patiently for a good chance. Everyone is courteous.
The difference is that we generally know the riding styles of all our riders and know what they'll do in any given circumstance.

Ok lets put all of this in perspective for all of those reading this and wondering whether they will come along for their first ATNR,
6 months ago I was in the same boat as you, reading the thread thinking, is it worth it, sounds like everybody speeds and gets caught. I wondered whether I'd get left behind, or cause problems. Long story short Qkchk assured me it would be ok so I came along.
That first ride there were 8 bikes (early in the riding season I guess) now each week there's around 50 bikes.
Volume speaks louder than words, the ride is great, it is safe (disclaimer: until you are used to the route, take notice of the corner speed signs) and it is FUN.
The Qks run it well, you won't get lost and if you are sensible you won't lose your license from speeding.
All said come along, 50 people say its great, about 5-10 are saying it not for them - mind you I think they probably get there kicks at speeds slightly faster than 100km/hr.
oh yeah - SkidMark takes a lot of flack, some warranteed some maybe not, but if you think about it thats 1 in 50, if only 2% in every population were considered idoits imagine how great the world would be.

There seems to be a little bit of disillusionment from some of those doing pointer duty.
I have a suggestion - don't race to the front of the pack, the ride only needs about 10 pointers so let some of the slower-mid paced riders go first.
This might work - or it might not.

There seems to be a little bit of disillusionment from some of those doing pointer duty.
I used to ensure I stayed back a bit so as not to get snapped for point duty, that is until I led the ride one evening and had trouble finding pointers - the buggers were all hanging back and hiding.
Now I make a point of doing my bit and pointing. It is actually pretty awesome. Nothing like 50 bikes roaring past to lift the soul.
Then you get the chance to fang it comfortably. You can be pretty sure that any cops that may be ahead will already be busy.
I also find I get clear road, the group has sorted itself fast to slow and all I got to do is pick off a few straglers and the road clears cause the main group is well ahead.

Its an awesome ride. maybe the people who don't like the ATNR are searching in the wrong place for what they want. Theres no need to put down the ride becuase its not what your looking for.
if you like an 8 bike ride, then go ride that and don't mock a 50 bike ride.
Its a well organised social cruise/ride/fang(however you are feeling that night) followed by the overrun of an albany pub.
So thanks to the Qks!!! of the few who don't seem to apreciate it, there are 50+ of us that do! and alot more in the future that will.

Thu night ride...
I'm not here to kiss butts, I know the Qks put in a shit load of effort to get this up and running and who the hell are we to ruin it?
Constructive criticism is always welcome (well in my camp anyway) If I'm being a dick, point it out. No problems. I expect the same of others. Beat me up and I'll be pissed off but anything life threatening will get a mention. Skidmark and JSG come up for occassional comment, and no doubt so do many others.
Cops and tickets happen. It's their job so don't bitch about it. Stepping into the line of fire is a warning I've heard in the debrief at the beginning of every Thu night ride I've been on, it's even in the disclaimer on the calendar item. I do it from time to time, and should I get snapped I wear it.

1) Cats fights be taken outside. Why make enemies online when you then have to ride with them offline. Any shite posts in here get moved deleted or another thread started. Precious toes will be walked on. Accept it, move on
2) To the Qk's. I see the right to ban people from rides is mentioned in the disclaimer of the sticky. Dunno if that right is being exercised, but should you need to I'll respect it one way or t'other.
Despite it being a KB ride, there's no question who organises it, who's in charge and who we have to listen to. This isn't school, the Qk's aren't somehow resposible for our actions, but they do put the effort in, they provide an opportunity to have a lot of fun, and the bitching, backstabing and squabbling doesn't help at all.
At the end of the day, someone is in control - that's Steve and Dawn. It's a simple case of logistics. If you don't like the ride - don't come.
Fuck - this comes across so condescending - sorry guys... but... Speedie, 6pack - you guys have your reasons.. no worries. You choose not to come, or to come on occasion... whatever.
Maybe others should follow that example rather than turn this more and more into a weekly shitfight

Well said MDU, I agree with above quote... maybe its not being exercised. Its your ride qk's, so dont be afraid to ban people or even politely tell people that they cant/should not attend. Its starting to get quite large each week and you may need to start 'cracking the whip' a bit to make sure everyone knows who is in charge and keeps in line. You make the rules, dont be afraid to enforce them? Heck you got my support! and many others im sure...

Personally I am glad that someone (Qks) with their experience takes the responsibility and effort for organising the ATNR. Well done to you both for doing this.
I don't ride a sports bike so don't seem to encounter some of the challenges that some on the ATNR talk about. My bike is a little different to most of the others on the ride and not as fast but nevertheless I have felt welcomed. When stuff has happened on my bike (as I am still running it in in its present format) I have had nothing but helpful comments and suggestions where concern has always been expressed. Thanks again.
The ATNR rides that I have made have been a great experience for me. I am also sure that my confidence and riding skills have improved. Thanks for this.

Can't we all just get along??
Seriously folks, let those who want to enjoy this ride do so and those who choose otherwise enjoy their choice also. I honestly do not see any reason for the negative comments, the quicks do a good job in organising this run and yes there are those who push themselves too hard and pay the price, this should not be seen as anyone elses responsibility but the rider.
It is a fun ride with really good camaraderie at the end, enjoy it for what it is.
