View Full Version : Auckland: South Auckland Street Skills
Hey Gibbox - yep it was, was out to Cambridge. Can't wait to see the bike Spokey, curious now. Och Eldog, had a van with surfboards round the Kaimai windies last set of hairpin corners before Kawakawa township-but on the wrong side. Unsettling doing the Hunua windies at midnight, for a wop wop stretch a surprising amount of cages using that back road. mmm windies on the Coro loop, beware of boats being towed and in particular the ones that leave their rods upright, one almost clocked me when rounding a corner too fast dislodged the rod holder so it jutted out into my lane, had to lie over the tank and lean further. But puckered then continued on. Some rural car drivers baffle me...speed demons.
OK So do we need to add an exercise on to our carpark work on how to dodge fishing rods as well as boars on the 309:bleh:

You have summed up very easily about what it is all about.
FUN - otherwise how do you learn
And we are always looking for different games to play
A few simple rules though
RESPECT for everyone

Of course - That goes without saying!!!

whats the cost of ownership like compared to NZ?
do they even care about insurance, rego etc
is petrol similar price

whats the cost of ownership like compared to NZ?
Seems more expensive, but then they are not ridden as much as bikes here... Most of the classifieds for 2nd hand bikes read like this: "2010 Kawasaki Z1000 naked, low mileage of 9,000 kms, accident free, MY$43,000 (about NZ$15,375)"
But the difference is that big bikes (400cc and above are considered big bikes because about 90% of the 7 million registered motorbikes in Malaysia are 50-125cc scooters and motocycles) are only now coming into the market and are seen as a fashion statement by the well-to-do, with some hard core adventurers and racers.
Only Harleys had been well-established in the market, but now CBR600s and CBR1000s (and their equivalents from KTM, Ducati, Benelli, Aprilia, Triumph, Vistory and the usual Japanese brands) are appearing more frequently. I'd seen a few motards, tourers, racers and nakeds, most fairly new models. The range of models are limited, mostly to top-selling racers and nakeds. Only the Harleys seem to have a wide range of models available...
do they even care about insurance, rego etc
As the big bikes are more of a status symbol there (400cc and above), yes they do pay for insurance, rego, etc.
Similar costs to us here too for the kind of bikes we're used to, even though much larger population there (29.25 million). Almost MY$600 per year for a 1,000cc motorbike, compared to average MY$200 for a car (larger cc cars pay a lot more). A scooter or small motorcycle would pay only about MY$30 a year, which is why there are a whole heap of them there.
After conversion of course, the cost is a lot cheaper but again, they have the larger numbers...
is petrol similar price
After conversion, it is NZ$1.03 per litre... Dollar for dollar, it is MY$2.90 per litre there.
would be good to have you back
Thanks! :apint: Glad to be back in nice cool NZ!

On the way home, motorway blocked and detoured via manurewa, bike started playing up, I thought I had the old tyres on,all sorts of things occurred (as well as people going through red lights etc. Tyres looked ok, just got home, in the better light rear tyre was 1/4 down, found a whole pop rivet in tyre=FLAT
Taken tyre off - like I need the practise now to get it fixed, looks like I am going to invest in some gear to take with me in case it happens again
Want to make sure I am ok when I go to taupo for side cars, any suggestions?

would like to keep scorpio for commuting its a 10 min ride for me to work but regos a bit hard $ wise paying off mortgage :(
been reading KiwiRider and other mags, browing KB and other sites etc for reviews have a few options to look at first.
in the next few months we can talk shit about bikes pros/cons etc - still have to get restricted and full.
after nailing a few ideas down/options will summon up courage (my main failure) to try a test ride then maybe hire one that seems to fit for a few days just to make sure, dont have lots of money to throw around, and would like to be able to make some of the mods I have done to the scorpio as well as good headlight (maybe spotlight addition for long night rides approx 600 km) we will see what happens remember I am a procrastinator from way back and often need to be prodded/pushed in a general direction
It has taken me quite a few years to finally get a motorcycle, (part broken heart replacement :baby:) thats mostly behind me now - work has slowed in general - it is why I am cautious about spending.
but a list is already being made, by listening to you all and forming my OWN ideas I will get there eventually.... thanks for the advice  I am slow at picking stuff up - cu at SASS

Well a 900 Hornet is a good commuter and play bike. Not trying to sell you mine as I need it gone soon and you need time to look about. But they are cheap to buy and maintain. Nice power down low but wont rip your arms off but good boogie up top. Very easy bike to ride casually. Get revs over 7k it goes hard. But under that its a pussycat. Easy to get luggage and real good economy. Ive done a couple of 700k+ days with no worries. I wouldnt pay over 6k for one and as an idea im putting mine on TM with a reserve of $3999 and hope to get $4500. Thats a truck load of bike for the money. They will be around at that price when you are ready to move as they sold stacks of them if one spins your wheels.
600 and 1200 Bandits are great but a little heavy. There are some nice options like 650/1000 Vstroms if you want really upright.

With bike options dont be scared of bigger bore bikes. I went from a 400 to a 1200 with no problems. You tend to ride them like an auto to start with. Put em in top and just ride with the throttle. Rego difference is small so I would ride a 600 to save $150 a year.

OK I will get restricted May sometime.
After that we will look at asking Gremlin. Then Full License May 2015 so got plenty of time.
I want to look at what I need and physically I need to be able to do (eg: change tyres?) and fitness level etc
just the basic overall stuff, yes I have read the info on Iron Butt and suggested items. no brainer for those at SASS

no matter what it is, just keep one eye out - you might be surprised at what you might find, it might be better than what you were looking for, as you get wiser your ideals change, and there will always be something else better that will come along and take your fancy aye  and you can always go and try a bike and see if it fits.

Pete, we my be having problems also because we are still driving our cars subconsciencely as we move over to the left and the road bends to the right our natural instint to remain some distance from the curb from our car driving. As we need to do a lot more practise to remove this feeling from our skill set when riding the bike. We are the ones doing the least amount of riding per week I guess in our group. It is just practise, practise practise till its second nature. what do you think its still only part of the answer.

Its also that holding the tank with your knees, looking through the corner, picking your turn in point, counter steer, etc.
But you have mastered the hard part. You have realized you have a problem and are working on it which is the biggest step.

Anyhow folks algud. Catch yáll next time.
Congrats to eldog. I guess the roadworks proved you can ride through anything and hence the test was a piece of weez..I mean cake.
Sorry that we missed Big Dog at the carpark. Had we known, we would have made a point of catching you there. Maybe you should have waited around your home as we passed very close to Tuakau on our long ride. In fact we have actually ridden up the main street on some of our rides.
We rode Runciman Road in the opposite direction to our usual and that showed how different the same road can be.
Sorry that we also missed Makz at the refreshment stop.
By the way, our local is getting to know us very well. Not only asking us about chips but also anticipating the orders of triple shot coffees in handles (as in what a beer is usually served in). Yes you have read that correctly. I think we have trendsetters riding with us.
Party broke up before 10 pm. Something about riding outside of licenses was muttered but may be they just needed their beauty sleep.

If it helps any: with over 1/2 a million kms under my belt I still wash the front occasionally.
Much like a stage performance, you can wing it and sometimes your good, or you can rehearse, have action plans for disaster and have a better survival rate with smaller "bites out of the seat" when it does tuck.
I hit a tar bleed mid corner this morning, there are thousands on the road to the motorway from my house, so not worth trying to dodge them all, I just pick the best line and stay prepared for a little correction.
Plenty of room left to run wide so you get to just remain calm, correct slightly and carry on.

There will be wet patches of road even if it doesnt rain. Allow for this.

Its easier than you think. The low speed stuff is harder as the bike has more size and weight. Open road is easier as the bike will be more stable and less frantic to keep up with traffic. Obviously dont explore the rev range until used to the bike. Keep it under 4 to 5k rpm to start with.

Think Ive sussed out my dull tail lights. Being LED they are very directional. So with dropping the forks and lifting the rear the lights are aimed up. Spacers should sort this.

Something to chew on for those running non standard bulbs such as HIDs. If you blew a bulb in a little town like Huntley on a late night run to Hamilton where would you buy a replacement?
20 years ago when gas stations were mostly closed by 6 in smaller towns (still are in Tuakau) I used to keep a spare headlight bulb taped into my fairing where it was secure bit I could find it in the dark. Spare taillight in the rear cowl. The others you can live without I you have to. Led lighting is making that harder to judge because they go or they don't. There is no dimming. No browning of the bulb. Although you normally only lose one at a time out if an array.
Once upon a time in a land far far away... from Auckland I blew a headlamp between Hawera and Stratford. Not an open gas station until New Plymouth. $50 for a halogen h4 at midnight. 2 for 20 at Repco during business hours. That there be a lesson in economics. Supply vs demand dictates price.
Darken scary trying to make the choir between dipping for the oncoming car that is clearly swerving around because of your beam and having no light at all

Ah, you have much to learn Young Grasshopper.
Always carry a spare headlight bulb under the seat. And always have a small flashlight in your tool kit, you do have a tool kit?
Changing you headlight bulb on a faired bike without a flashlight may not work out well.

Keep the light in the tool kit so you know where it is.
Would you not know where your spare bulb is if you taped it to the inside of the fairing or seat cowl?
I know tools under the seat broke the bulbs when both the bulbs and The tools were in the same location. Pretty delicate things h4s. The glass tends to stay whole but separate from the bayonet.
Either way horses for courses. My point was more if you have a specialist bulb do you have a plan around getting a replacement?
If you are touring do you take one with you?
Do you know the best way to change your bulb?
Instruction manuals often have a way to change it including how to defeat any specialist mounts. This is not always the best way. Especially not at 3 am by the side of the road in the rain. Hayabusa for example recommends taking the top fairing skirt off on the right. This requires 2 Allen keys, only one of which is included in the tool kit. Valuable information before you need it. Removal of 4 bolts and a piece of plastic taking care to not snap off locator tabs.
Or if you've thought about it in advance you can turn the bars to the right.
Sit to the left.
Reach up through the forks.
You can't see what you are doing but you can feel the boot to pull back the connecter to remove an the cage to release.
Job done no parts to lose.
Current bike I need to remove 2 screws and keep track of them. But the dr is a nightmare in the same scenario. 3 unequal length screws and a small spacer to not lose and get back on in the correct order. And that is just the cowl. Then you need to pull all the wiring out of the way. Some will need to be disconnects to reach. Fortunately only happened to me while servicing the bike so far. 2x over 6 years.

But I am going to measure voltage at the light over the weekend and may well end up using relays to make sure its getting full volts.

When I have finished replacing my old an worn out gear I intend to upgrade the crappy factory unit with a dual projector lamp setup.
Each lamp takes an h4 so replacements are pretty easy to come by but similar in function to what I had in the Hayabusa.
Just two of them sharing high and low.
Can't remember where but they carry euro specs so should be close enough to legal.

Most GSX and GSXRs can have their headlight changed without tools if you come up from underneath.
Most faired bikes can unless they have a full skirt (collection of pieces that stop air from going up under the nose of the fairing so that all air going in goes to radiator) in the fairing.
