No ART days for me then until I get more gear. Good to get info about whats required
If that is only thing stopping you, you can borrow my back protector for the day. But it is an xxxl.

Another little rule i have not mentioned about the ART day. If you happen to have an off. Which is not likely, you and your bike will be but on a trailer. And driven through the pits. Slowly. You may encounter some ridicule from your fellow riders.
Marshals have first dibs on laughs anyway :bleh:
They also have the option of kicking you for being stupid, and the odds of this occurring are directly proportional to how well the marshal knows you :D

AWS, rule on the back protector. "It needs to be a hard shell and preferably articulated back protector. An in jacket one will be passed but not if it is simply a foam insert". But the comment was made that a proper Back protector is far safer and is the recommended option.
I've been doing a little bit of research on back protectors, and from what I can see it seems that the "hard shell" style of back protector is not the only way to skin a cat. It seems that reactive or intelligent polymers now form the basis of many of the higher performing protectors. Rather than using a hard shell and polystyrene to spread the loads, they use quite a dense foam that "hardens" on impact - rather like the way cornflower reacts to fast movement (look up non-Newtonian fluid). As well as providing top-notch impact protection, they soften when warm and conform to the users body shape, making them really comfortable too. While CE Level 2 back protectors need to transfer less than 9 KN in the standard test, some of the best ones can transfer less than 4 KN.
It's just my guess, but maybe in a few years these advanced materials will have taken over and we'll see hard plastic only used on the cheaper versions (if this does come to pass - just remember you heard it here first! ;) )
What's been good about this issue coming up is that it has made me realise that I could be using high performance back protection in my existing jacket on my day-to-day commute for a relatively modest cost. The problem however is that the "soft" system I would choose for daily use may not be accepted at the track and I'd have to fork out triple the cash for a hard shell protector that provides less impact protection over a slightly larger area, and that I will only ever wear occasionally... What to do...? What to do....?

Yeah, when I say new, I mean like in the last 5 or 6 years. But the materials are probably older than that - it seems like they probably came from the military - much like everything :)

And as you're in textile, what is the abrasion resistance like? I wouldn't mind a lighter one.
I don't know that abrasion resistance really comes into it. From my reading, CE Level 2 certification is all about impact reduction and coverage. To be certified Level 2 it needs to transfer less than 9 kN and it needs to cover a certain portion of the back. I didn't see any comment on abrasion resistance. Also, some people express interest in whether the polymer back protectors have the same puncture resistance as plastic (in case they get a footpeg in the back). However Forcefield, commenting on their "Forcefield Pro Sub 4" noted that this type of impact is exceedingly rare, so it is not normally a consideration. And any footpeg would first have to penetrate the leather or Cordura jacket first - not an easy ask.
Another reason I don't think abrasion resistance is much of an issue is that jackets are typically not reinforced on the back. They use their strongest and most abrasion resistant materials on the shoulders and elbows, but often the back is just normal Cordura, or even mesh on an airflow jacket. So I think the whole back protector thing is more about absorbing the initial impact, or impact on obstacles, rather than providing a surface to slide on.
Having said that, the material is quite stiff when it is impacted and quite thick, so you'd need to wear through probably an inch or more of it whereas hard shell plastic would be maybe a couple of mm before you are into the EPS (polystyrene) core.

As we are talking track day requirement, then a level of abrasion resistance is of significance if wearing textile. I believe textile is a one shot deal. My textiles when i slid after hitting a car were destroyed. That was at maybe 45kph. Knee burnt through to the pad, and jacket burnt on the elbow. Go for a slide on the track at say 100kph then you wont be re-using them.
Today a guy went down in front of my at about 80kph. Nice slide into the kitty litter. After finding a new lever blade he was back out. His leathers had minor scuffs. I noticed that most of the faster guys had scuffed leathers.
But for road use I would like a lighter back protector so if these polymer ones are any good I would take a look for sure. Thats why I got them for my knees and elbows in my leathers. I would not use a pocket type protector, it would have to be a strap type. As Sharry said, why protect only part of your back. And she is living proof.

Been doing a bit more reading on this whole back protector caper and it seems they don't really do what most people think they do. It seems that the manufacturers don't actually say that a back protector will help prevent a spinal injury, but they don't exactly set the record straight either. The Motorcycle Council of NSW has some very useful information on protective gear on their website http://roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.au/a/75.html (here) (see link near the bottom - No 8. Impact Protectors).
Based on accident research some 13% of people sustain a back injury in a crash, but only 1% due to a direct spinal impact. Most spinal injuries are caused by overextension, bending or twisting of the spine caused by impacts to the head or side - not something a back protector can help you with. However experts still recommend using a back protector since they do reduce muscle strains and bruising.
There is lots of other really interesting and useful information on the site - and they aren't afraid to point out that there are some things that no protective gear can save you from - such as hitting objects at high speed. Something I found really interesting is how much variety there is in the quality of basic gear (jackets and pants), how many would fail CE testing and how even leather garments aren't immune. I was really surprised at how many leather garments would fail testing - and not necessarily the cheap ones. The biggest problem appears to be inadequate seams bursting. It appears that it is quite difficult to get a jacket to pass CE testing so a lot of manufacturers don't bother - they list EN 1621-1 and EN 1621-2, but this is the armour rather than the garment - EN 13595 is the certification for the jacket. Anyway, have a read for yourselves... I'll certainly be taking a bit more interest next time I buy gear.

I suggest you know a bit more about back protectors before you start casting your opinion as fact. My back protector has interlocking plates that will prevent hyperextension of the spine.
I also love how you seem to think they don't do anything, when actually, they do... but hey, it's your spine.

Hey, I'm no expert of back protectors - I've just been looking into them and found some interesting information that appears to have some science behind it rather than just marketing hype and anecdote. But everyone should do their own research and make their own decisions. I've not used a back protector for commuting in the past, but as a result of my research I will be purchasing one shortly - so I am now convinced that they are useful :).

Good spotting. I didn't notice the dates of the references before - they do appear to be quite old. I don't imagine the main findings from the crash statistics would have changed much, but I'd expect and hope that the clothing and protection technology would be moving on quite quickly. It would be really interesting to see how current gear compares.
Another thing worth noting is that the statistics relate to road riding rather than track. So the injuries are related to hitting obstacles and other vehicles rather than just sliding at high speed.
Did you look at the page on what Australian Riders actually wear? It's amazing that over 50% wore jeans in 2003. I wonder if that has changed in the past 10 years. The fact that pillions are less well protected than riders I don't think was any great surprise.

In relation to people not wearing the right gear, when I started riding in 1979 the right gear was a $30 helmet, $60 leather gauntlets (sheep wool lined) buckled up, steel caped leather boots a $500 leather jacket and a pair of jeans (7 pairs to manage rain). I only saw girls in leather pants back then out night clubbing.
I still buy the best I can afford, now we have armour, pants and back protectors (they are called that as that is what they are/do)
Some people still chose to not wear protective gear, that is their choice but it doesn't make it the right choice ....... There is no helping stupid

Interesting point in the article. It says protectors wont stop broken bones, it just means you get fractures instead of breaks or compound breaks. So if this is to be believed, would you not rather a fractured spine over a broken one?

Just an idea Fraser, I have to go out tomorrow night and get spare fuel for my bike. I have a few fuel tins and can pick up 5 or 10L of whatever grade you need and bring it out if you want? You can just pay me for it out there. That way you have some to get home as well.

Not so worried about gas getting home, just so long as I have enough to get around the track without leaving. You think I'll have enough? 17L tank/roughly 220-240km on that.
If not, then if you could grab me some 95/98 then that'd be awesome, thanks. :)
Great ride last night, even if it was a tad chilly. I dressed up in leathers all for nothing – no chocolate heart, no free coffee. Lost my touch..

Depends how you ride it, but you're not going to get regular consumption at the track. Last time I did some track time, instead of 5-6L/100km, I got more like 10L/100km

Okay, so I've done some measuring.
Front forks have 20mm of static sag, 40mm rider sag.
Rear shock has 5mm of static sag, 20mm rider sag.
Based off of those RT videos, the static sag of the front seems too low but the rider sag seems passable.
The rear shock's static sag seems right on but the rider sag could perhaps be a bit more.
Idea on where to go from here? I haven't touched preload or anything on either yet.

I would add preload to the front and see how it changes. See if you can get the rider in the 30mm bracket. You dont have time for a spring change so getting rider sag right would be the goal. Your static will drop with more preload to. But remember that as the front comes up it will load the rear more so that may sort the rear numbers for you.
Good to see your starting to understand it. Not hard once you get an understanding.:niceone:

Yup, slowly getting there.
I quickly dialled my rebound back a half turn last night before going to bed and I think it tidied up that slight jump at the top of the rebound stroke that you noted on Tuesday. Front end seems a bit more responsive. Gonna dial in some more preload later tonight.
In other news, I got my Drift Ghost-S camera in the mail yesterday and tested it in the afternoon as well as this morning. The only bad news is that I just got word that helmet cams are allowed at HD but not at ART days.
I'm guessing cameras mounted to your tank are okay if you managed to get footage of your last time, Rob? Kinda shitty how my camera didn't come with any kind of mounting to be able to do that..

It's a curved adhesive mount. The camera is decently low profile. I can feel the weight of it on the helmet but it doesn't seem to attract too much wind drag.
I'm gonna go have a look for another mount at lunch. I hope they'll let me run with one. Yours is fixed to your tank right?

Aaand I just so happen to have made $20 tonight selling an old broken Xbox. Purrfect. Thanks again.
Got a friend to help me measure and set my preload tonight. Nows I got:
– Front 33mm sag in the front
– Rear 25mm sag
Not perfect numbers but definitely better than what I was working with previously. I'd like a a bit more sag in the rear but I didn't wanna muck around too much with the rear shock. I'll see how she goes on the ride in to work tomorrow.
My rebound damping is set a half turn softer than previously, which brings it back in line with the stock setting as per my manual and the compression is a 1/4 turn harder than stock.

Mike said you were very good. He enjoyed following you. So with being in with me in Group 2 next time you expand on what you get from G1. And will be in faster traffic. I have no doubt you will be faster than me next time.
And most importantly you now are starting to know what your bike can do if it needs to in an emergency on the road and how far you can really lean.
My top speed memory thingy came up with 190kph which puzzled me a bit. On reading the instructions it says it remembers the highest speed you have held for 30seconds.
Have changed the bike back from track mod now, put the mirrors back on, tyres back up to road pressure and gearing back to normal. Also got Sharrys bike out from under the cover and started on getting it back going.

Would've been, but was a car driving day today to go visiting family. Weather was mint again today for it though.
I'm looking forward to the next track day already. I think I will do another ART day but then after the next I might swap to doing twilight playdays to just save a bit of coin.
Watching my footage I already notice that I think I'm not going through the gears enough. Also be interesting to see if I can speed up a bit now that I am more familiar with the track. The first few sessions my mind was going a mile a minute just trying to remember what to do, let alone remember reference points for everything. Only really started to get into the groove of things in the 4th session, but by the 5th I was pretty knackered and focussing a lot on just not binning it.
I wanna get the theory from group 2 but the traffic in that group is pretty daunting. If only I could join in that group for the theory but then ride in group 1. ;)

Yeah occasionally I tapped it out and found out that there was quite a bit more than I thought lurking in reserve. I think the biggest problem was my pants. The lining in my textiles made it like sitting on a block of ice - sliding around all over the seat. Slide down the back under power, then all the way to the front under brakes. Kept forgetting to take the weight of my arms under braking and I think subconsciously that made me not want to go quite as fast because I was just going to have to scrub it all off again. That back straight just goes by so fast and then it's brakes, brakes, brakes. And the front straight -well that's just way too fast for comfort!

Some of those learners were pretty quick tho. I don't know how long Tania the vtr rider has been at it - she didn't exude confidence early in the day, but I could barely keep in touch thru the corners later on. What you weren't doing was supporting your lower body with you knees. If you grip the tanks with your knees all the weight comes of the bars and you throw less weight forward. If you dont have it tank grip helps.
The straight from turn 5 I dont brake a lot more roll off the throttle and use a little. Try to be smooth with it. In saying that I had one point where I had to much speed and had my boot on the deck and a reasonable amount of front brake on. I was amazed it held so from then on I went a bit quicker into it.

I only noticed I was doing that later in the day. Half of the reason is because my throttle gets really touchy in lower gears, and I even noticed it a lot out today when I went riding on my day off.
I'll explain what I mean tomorrow at the ride. George from MD told me that it was previously happening because my chain needed changing, then it kept happening and he said it was because it was loose after my tyre change. A week after the service it still happens though..

Turns out it's actually the textiles themselves. They just slide around on my seat. It's a bit disconcerting. MV actually sell a grippier seat for serious racers. I actually found it easier to hang off a bit as it stopped me sliding around as much.

Your welcome. I wish i could take photos as good as JDAS. JDAS are professionals that were at the event. When i got given a business card by the chick i was talking to, i figured they'd be charging for their photos (like the pictures taken at theme parks). But ya can share them off facebook. Perhaps if ya want a high def photo off them they'd charge ya?

Stepdad bought an LS650/S40 to get his licence. Ive ridden it a few times. Nice low end power, basically unstallable, low seat height and it will do 110kph no worries and will pick up to 130 if required (revving pretty hard). Only issue is it is a little cramped for a taller rider. The thing has a few vibrations in the footpegs at higher speeds but its a single, you cant expect anything different. The thing is bulletproof.

any recommendations for a camera (video type) which has good night use.
Only ones which are good for video recording at night is a DSLR, and then you'd need the casing, the mount, stabilisation kit or a dampener (even if the lens has stablisation although soem software is pretty good at stabilising in post-production, i.e. during editing), etc.
Serious dough for serious kit...

Did this loop a month or so ago. Those straight roads to Dargaville turning off before Brynderwyn are a drag but apart from that it's an awesome ride.

aws, I've lent out all of my USB sticks at the mo but I haven't forgotten about dropping that footage off to you. Hopefully later this week I'll get some of them back.

Back in the beginning of my riding, when I rode and it was raining, you got wet!
There was no gear available to keep the weather out. One had to suffer that wet feeling
You young whipper snappers have no idea :bleh:

Second bike??
yep, added another 4cyl 250cc to the stable haha
Picked up a mc22 to ride while I do some work on my zxr, wanted something to ride in case the work takes longer than expected. I originally wanted a mc22, so I found one that seemed in good nick and bought it. Was going to buy a zx6r... but decided not to risk it.
The riding position on the cbr seems much less aggressive than the zxr, so might mean it'll be more comfortable on the longer rides which is a bonus. Once I have the zxr all fixed up i'll take them both to the track and do some back to back tests for fun.... erm I mean "science"

That's harsh. Her name was Flo I think. Anyway missed a good learning ride this evening wet road some rain but not a lot. Good practice finding traction as Rob calls it. Went ok apart from a clump of mud in Regis lane. See you next week.

The only thing now about riding in the rain I dsilike is drying out my gear after, otherwise I'm not nervous about riding on wet roads or in the rain any more. I actually prefer to be able to ride when it rains during work days because of the horrible traffic that usually follows the rain...
Sorry I wasn't there last night, daughter had something on and I had to play chauffuer...

I wasn't there because I'm useless and thought it was Monday. Went for a good ride up to Wellsford, across to Leigh and then home on Saturday though. First time on gravel on the bandit. And I got to be immature with my big exhaust in the tunnel on the toll road :)

I went to the gym instead last night and noticed that it didn't rain at all. Was a bit gutted that I called that wrong, but I got drenched this morning. Karma.

That cutting out in Pirongia scenario wasn't a Halloween tall story...I reckon the smart security system signal from the key fob was compromised by radio and cell phone interference leading to temp machine shutdown and cut off. Once pushed out of interference range it was all hunky dory and had the electrics and everything else checked over once home. Remember, it was along the side of the road reserve...right where cabling and service lines would have been installed and there are in ground signal pads at either extent of town and new tower runs put in not too far away. I'd forgotten about that.

I might be keen but depends how my Sunday morning goes, might be busy. I'll flick ya a txt if not.
Word going around is that the cops are planning a blitz on bikes in Nov. Everything from regos and WOFs to speed. They often pick on bikes at the beginning of summer as some riders have had their bike regos on hold, and get the bike out before the wallet.
Saw a cop on the Wellesley St/Port offramp today pinging bikes. Luckily he had pulled another over already so I wasn't picked up. Too close.

All in the attitude, as I have proven. You need to ask at SASS. I wasn't even asked for my license. Talked about Harleys as opposed to CBRs.
Mind you , it could have been the girl card. Or the grey hair card. Whatever. It worked.

Essential info for the newbies to SASS:

Might be good to wait until the ART day if you can. I did one first and I'm glad I did.
I don't think I'd be that comfortable going to a playday straight away without any kind of guidance around the track. That might just be me though.
Although a buddy of mine did the opposite and did playdays first, although that wasn't without incident. He had plenty of footage on his GoPro of him taking corners wrong and ending up off the track or stepping his back tyre out on certain corners.
