a wise man /or was it a woman, once said he who rides in rain gets wet crotch, amongst other things. I won't be, got a MAG (09) meeting to attend and Ii've banned the other half from tonights affair. Tui's anyone?
I think it might be a Tui's night actually.
I will grab some dvds and go to ORyans :drinknsin
This all sounds a bit soft if you ask me! I was looking forward to taking the new wheels for a spin...

Not sure where I would mount lights - there is no engine guard like the Wee Strom. I haven't really looked for good positions. May just have to put one over the rear shock.
Lights in the rear shock area would work well.
You could also put them under the rear seat/guard so that they shine down onto the rear tyre
As you rode away I was thinking that your helmet colour doesn't match anymore.
Thinking of a new helmet too?
I'd get shot!
Anyway, blue and black go together OK. (Especially if there are some blue lights somewhere :msn-wink:)

Haven't ridden in the dark much (out of town) and the times when I have I've probably had a tinted visor and put my lack of vision down to that!
Anyway last night we came up behind a horse float and while Andrew sat behind it I was looking at the beam from his lights on the back of its tailgate. I sat in the same place and my lights didn't even register!
Stupid I know but I wrongly assumed that they were just crappy lights.
Got home and adjusted them up. Went round the block and got flashed whilst on low beam  Had put it them up too high and didn't allow for the drop in suspension when sitting on the bike. Minor adjustment down and now I can't wait to try the country roads at night.
PS Andrew's bike is nice

Yeah - Sky High is OK, but most of the bends are on the way down. I always prefer my twisties on the way up. It's just that much easier to ride when you don't have to drag on the brakes all the time. Thats' why I like coming back via Twilight Road!
PS - glad you've got those lights sorted out.

So today I helped a friend make short (extremely short) documentary about motorcycle safety. My friend is doing a film course in directing at South Seas Film School and he asked me to be the 'star' of a little production he was doing for a homework assignment.
We used the netball courts at Auckland Girls Grammar in central Auckland; there was me (the 'talent'), the director, a presenter, a cameraman and a pretty sound girl. The script was mostly written by me, in that I was asked to talk for 4 x 15 second segments about various things; the bike, the gear, and two exercises.
I demonstrated emergency evasion around some cones (a SASS classic). And then did some emergency braking (both the proper type and the exciting type).
They're doing editing now, I'll post a link in a week when it's all done.
funrunna
14th March 2011, 12:55
I'd say the vid should have starred the sound girl  would get higher ratings
Don't know whether I can make the charity ride yet - will know by Wed night

Won't be able to make it Wednesday, but if anyone is coming on the charity ride, I'm planning to leave from the Shell Station on Clevedon Road around 9:30 am. An hour should be heaps of time to get up to Dairy Flat.

Yes it seems that you're not the only one to think the F & Z make a pretty good R.
Haven't ridden the DL since I got it. Need to tidy up a couple of minor issues before I sell. Should take it out for a ride to keep the battery charged up.

Yeah, didn't make it to the ride, but thought I'd meet everyone down at Manukau for a bit of practice. No-one showed:violin:, so did a few slaloms and a bit of emergency braking practice. Laid down a nice long black stripe off my front tyre:shit:. Contrary to my doubts about really needing to load up the front tyre first - it seems that it does make quite a difference to the amount of anchorage one can throw out!
Maybe next week...

19th April 2011, 22:08
I will be there.
Hopefully on the bike. It's a bit worse for wear at the moment. I took on the back of a light truck on the motorway this evening.
All ready been to Manukau Police Station and filed a report.
I clipped the back of the small truck as I tried to avoid the texting bitch that was pulling into my lane. Almost missed the truck. Got a little wobble on after tapping it and remember adamantly thinking that I wasn't going to drop the bike in the middle of the motorway.
The Police have remained uncommitted about charges to be laid against the texting cow. I guess if she doesn't admit to it, they will not push it any further.
I stopped and had a brief chat with truck driver and then went to Papakura Police Station but they were closed.
Rode home. When Howard came home, I showed him the damage and we went to Manukau Police.
Now it is wait and see.
I have broken a piece of my faring and lost my left mirror. Funny enough, the indicator was caught in it all but it is still there, in one piece and it is working.
Thank Goodness for all the practising I do at SASS.
I wonder how I might have survived otherwise.

Don't think it was a white van. We pulled up at the lights on Redoubt Road to turn right onto the motorway. We had one vehicle in front of us.
This white thing pulled up beside me, yet they should have pulled up another car length further ahead. I was getting a bit suspicious but wasn't going to give them any credit by looking at them.
Anyway we got the green and we were outta there.

Sis, pleased to hear that practice has made a difference, well done.
Pity about the bikes damage, but that"s nothing when compared to what might have been.
Did the truck driver see what happened, better still did he see that cow texting?
Anyhow a general apology from us two for not being around much lately, I've just got back into full time employment and have systematically been decimating our financial reserves making the house look beautiful on the outside and both running bikes were out of rego and warrant. Fixed now and hopefully the pay cheques will be coming through soon so we should be good to go soon.

Maybe the cost is prohibitive, I dunno. Addicted; yup that's it.

Well, he keeps threatening to sell it. And I keep threatening to buy it.
Your addiction = your wife's affliction.
I concur about Wednesday. Felt great sitting in the middle of all that sweet engine noise.
We are all Addicted, no matter what we ride.
Guys,
Howard and I may be late tomorrow. We are signing the papers for the new house and that can take a while. I suggest carrying on without us. We will meet up somewhere, most likely at the car park.
Caseye - yes, the ZX12R could be for sale. I just have to convince Howard that we cannot afford it. His answer is to put the Harley rego on hold till October. This means that he needs a bike (ZX12R) to ride so nothing will be sold till October. That will give Grasshopperus time to save.
I have given up my dream of another bike for now (because of this house purchase that we are in the middle of) so its only fair that a bike is going to be for sale in October.:weep: And it wont be the CBR

I should have come along after all. I felt the need to get back up to Woodhill (mountain biking) after 3 weeks of no pedalling, but it backfired somewhat. Firstly I got into a huge slide on some wet wood, and when I slid off the end I must have hit a root or something, as there was a loud crack as my tubeless rear tire rolled over too much, popped the bead off the rim and deflated all in one go. So I had to run my bike several k's out of the forest. (from now on I'll be carrying a CO2 cartridge and a small bottle of sealant). Secondly my theory that a good bit of exercise would blow the vestige of a cold out of my system proved incorrect, and it was back with a vengeance during the night.

Howard and I will be there tomorrow night.
We are now esconsed in our new home and the bikes are accessible. Nothing much else is.

Hey guys Daniel here,
I haven't been for ages. So I'm most likely going to start coming along again in about 2 months, I see you've got a hornet now Alistair, good choice, too bad I don't have mine anymore!
So I'm looking at bikes with the intention of getting one in two months. Mainly looking at MC22 CBR250RRs, ZXR250cs, and also NC30 VFR400s and NC35 RVF400s, or maybe even a Ducati Monster 400. I started on an FXR150, a little bike that you can't really get into too much trouble on, and after I was completely comfortable with everything on that bike I went to a Hornet 250.
The Hornet was awesome and I got completely confident on that as well. So that's why I'm thinking of getting a 400 instead of sticking to a 250. I know that I'll pace myself in learning/testing the bike until I'm completely comfortable with it as I did with my other bikes. As for the legal side of things as I don't have my full, well I can still get insurance, and I don't think I'd be riding stupidly enough to get noticed.
And it's a 400, I'm not jumping up to a 600 or a 1000. So yea I just wondered what your guys thoughts on that idea were.
funrunna
21st July 2011, 18:07
Hi Daniel, as it sounds like you're eligible or should be close to being eligible for the full license I personally wouldnt get hung up on the 250 restriction. Book in and make yourself legal as fast as you can, but buy the bike you really want (whatever size that may be)

21st July 2011, 21:44
Was a good turnout on Wednesday; plenty of new faces.
Hi Daniel, long time no see. My completely unbiased advice is to get a hornet 900, they rule.
Like Funrunna said, don't bother messing around with an overpriced 250 like the cbr or zxr. They're cool but not much different to the hornet 250. A ducati will be pretty pricey with regard to servicing and stuff but they do look cool. A modern 600cc cbr600/zx6/r6/gsxr600 is only about 30kgs heavier than the 250cc versions of the same model so you may as well get something like that because it'll last you longer and make for an easier resale.

It's funny how wearing earplugs can affect your riding. It's probably got something to do with less sensory input to distract you from riding. Everything seems so much more controlled when you haven't got a micro hurricane going on in your helmet.

We talked about this last night at the pub. We reckon that if we did meet up somewhere central then we'd just be marooned in the city with no where fun to ride to; we'd get broken up by traffic lights and all that and it would just suck.
So yeah, either we have one week where we're all at NASS and the next all at SASS or we do something on another day. The problem with a weekend ride is finding the time and the problem with visiting the other's meeting place is the 30 minute earlier leaving time that the visitors will need to sort out (that's easier though).
Also, If we're going to do this I say we call it, not SASS, nor NASS, nor SNASS but ASS as it truly will be Auckland Street Skills.

There are a few issues what ever way it is decided.
If we are to meet up on a Wednesday night at the others' place, it is a hassle getting thru traffic to get there on time. This may exclude some. Also best done when daylight saving is back in.
If we choose a weekend and meet somewhere central, we may get more bikes that are able to join in but we may have trouble finding a venue.
Look forward to hearing people's ideas.

A weekend ride would be cool and all, but it isn't really NASS or SASS or even ASS, it's just a ride.
I vote for meeting Wednesday in the city somewhere - take a restrained cruise along the waterfront (no traffic lights there) - do Riddell Road (got to be the best set of twisties in the city) and then make our way to somewhere like Sylvia Park for the carpark.

Now come on mate, where else would ya get ta see a newb kiss ashphalt...hope i haven't dented ur enthusiasm on that score. For all ye other SASS members who wondered if i A) got the clutch fixed and B) got home in one piece after this weekend...the answer is Yes and Yes. Sos, after kissing ashphalt on Weds ride the following morning i headed to that place in Drury to sort the bent clutch...picked up some bags for storage, picked up ma riding hog buddy a.k.a the newb baby sitter and we promptly gapped it to Welly. Ride down was ok, mixed weather...but essentially quite picturesque scenery. Ride down we went through Te Kuiti Taumaranui...loved the roads once out of the windies...lots of bikes on the road this weekend. Wellys quite a nice place to pootle. Got to hand it to the guys who allowed me and my ho-bag to ride with them, they were pretty good company and imparted some pieces of wisdom re riding. Kinda unexpected. Today i made the ride home solo, having been ditched by the big boys who had mens business to attend to, and i wanted to get home. Weather was bliss, traffic wasn't too bad, but the scenery was amazing! Oh yeah, got my first ever ticket from the PoPoe today in Rangipo-Turangi as a consequence of overtaking a truck-trailor, was throttling down and getting back to speed limit when he clocked me...got done for 13km over the limit...bloody rookie couldnt stop grinning when i took ma lid off, bloody revenue gatherer... ah well, i was speeding...thems the breaks. Sucked to be me that moment. He asked what i thought about the ticket and I told him i'd frame it for posterity...gah!!!! I went back through Tirau Putaruru out through Taupiri. Anyhoo, got home bout half 6 after calling in at the trusty BP Bombay, where i saw a superb Triumph Speedmaster rockin the black widow colour scheme and a black harley sportster...very nice choices and the dudes riding em were real friendly like. All in all, really stoked at having taken a decent ride and then arriving back in one piece without anything catastrophic happening.
SIS-apologies, i gapped it to Welly otherwise i would have done that ride with ya to look at where i kissed ashphalt.
When are we doing combined SN.ASS?

Hey fellow newling, i highly recommend coming...everyones pretty cool, its fun and non judgemental. Always room for learning and cautionary anecdotes that are sobering but useful. I'm a walking cautionary note btw, but atleast you'll get the real deal in terms of keeping it real aye.
Hey SIS-fellow SASS riders, this week i'm prob gonna be late so will either meet yous at the carpark or the pub...depends how long my meeting runs for ok.

Yep-had the bestest ride yet...catastrophe free. HOG riding buddies didn't mind me and my neon orange hi viz self pootling on behind on the way down, solo ride back was even better...was everything i'd imagined - nice and relaxed with mint weather. Though, i made the mistake about telling them about Weds, which of course meant they took me on the route with the most windies like ever?? Alas back to reality come Monday, so know the feeling, i too am caught out by work...fingers crossed i can make it to the pub atleast. Roll on another weekend of fabulous weekend, i'll say a prayer to the weather gods.

Scenario-this evening i walk into Clendon New World Manurewa, going in for miscellaneous goods of the munchy variety and in less than half a minute accosted by the ol chodja pseudo security guy (who despises me from a previous 'incident') who has an issue with me and my medium sized back pack. I respond that they can do a bag search before i exit as the whole policy and exercise is geared toward nabbing shoplifters - thieves. Anyhoo, they're not having a bar of it and want my bag pronto...i refuse and argue the points..ie breach of civil liberties citing unreasonable search, that i resent the inference and presumption that i am a criminal because I’m dressed in my bike gears (carrying helmet) with pack in tow, cite the guard (old fart) having a personal vendetta and so being discriminatory, cite harassment and the inconsistent application of store policy relating to bags. They claim to have notices up at the entrance and inside the store-they do but it relates to hoodies and school bags? Being that I’m in my thirties, i don't have a school bag but a small riding pack. They target me for my back pack but not the countless women (yes i am a lady biker to) with fricken handbags bigger than mine, people with baby bags and buggies walking past the whole fracas. SO...belabouring the point gets me REFUSED service and or custom AND 'verbally trespassed' supposedly, from my local New World; young security guy unable to handle me and my big words calls police who fob him off, i take down details (manager, guards, witnesses, time) and am highly agitated by the whole ridiculous situation. Complying with the guards request but under duress, i gap it home to ring the cops, who tell me the verbal trespass is a legally grey area as the wording is vague and open to spurious interpretation, being that security dude didn't take down any details-silly male just wanted the argumentative female to leave. I left when asked but seeing as I’m a bitch on wheels, literally, am going to do a number on this one. Approach the owner as well as the Regional Manager of NW Enterprises, Human Rights Commission, seek Legal Advice and make this plea.

Though i realise this is basically a storm in a teacup and that I’m ranting, i am just so mad, i take this as a personal affront. Just read this. Very rough area. I live very close to the supermarket. I have once locked myself in the car while 2 gangs had a fight around the car. Called cops and they were "we will let it disperse". Police station is across the road.
i dont take my kids down there when I have them. Ive been stood up for money and got yelled at for wearing a red tee shirt.
Thats a bit rough Maggy. But there are way better supermarkets around.

If you can slow ride confidentally - everything else is a breeze. Well almost.
I liked your tip on the handlebars and levers setting- that when you are sitting on your bike, you shouldn't be able to see you brake and clutch levers. Then they are in the correct place. And you don't have to lift your fingers over them. It all helps.

Thanks to those who turned up. Nice to meet you Gremlin.
I was driving home and thought I will have some music (cos I was in the car) and put my hand into a hole where the radio had been .
I couldn't believe it at first.
Then went around to the police station and reported the theft. The worst thing is they took our cut tennis balls that we use. I am now imagining a thousand deaths with tennis balls that have been cut in half.
Not too upset, just annoyed. The left hand lock on the car has been busted as well. But damage is minimal.
I guess the message is clear - Ride the bike. Don't use the car.

When I left the pub last night there was a chap in a car opposite my bike, quite chatty to me (from the confines of the car he was sitting in with driver's door open). I did my best to respond minimally (not rude, but not too friendly either) - he was only saying stuff like "I hope you haven't been drinking and then going to ride", and "you take care riding" as I pulled away.
As I traveled home it crossed my mind to wonder if any vehicles would be targeted - you know when you have a weird feeling about something but can't quite put your finger on it - then worried about whether I should have checked the state of my bike before heading off, but it all felt ok. Must go down to the garage and check that nothing is awry with it 'cos I couldn't tell in the dark.
Sorry to hear about what happened to your car; seems to be the thing at the moment (Rik's car got done over in the undercover carpark at Manukau countdown only a couple of weeks ago; they went in through his passenger door as well). At least you are ok. Vehicles can be fixed, gear can be replaced, but your safety and wellbeing has no price that can be put on it.

I think the thief was interrupted cos he didn't get my toolbox that was in the very back of the car.:woohoo:
He also didn't get my fairisle beany. In fact I am surprised that said beany didn't scare him off to begin with. I have been on my own at night, waiting beside my motorbike , wearing said beany when 3 young men crossed the road to avoid me. I was just starting to think that there were 3 of them and one of me and how was I going to keep my self safe when I overheard their conversation- "Shit there's a biker, lets cross the road."
And on a more serious note, I think in future when some of us leave separately, we need to just accompany them and make sure they are safely on their bike and away.

The plan is to repeat last week, where we went over Twilight Road - it might be boring but it gives everyone a chance to concentrate on their corners, you know the drill, coming in wide, at a slower speed than you might usually take it so that there is no pressure and you can get your lines correct.
