I'm quite sure I'll be there tomorrow, folks, with my different looking horney Black Beauty! See you there, aSASSins!
Going for my learners today(monday), it will be my first time on public main roads so not sure if i'll be confident enough to ride out to south.
Maybe after I get a bit more experience in on main roads with cagers around me, also fucked up my finger so not sure if i'll be able to use the clutch
Good luck and join us for SASS, whatever the outcome. You'll get better with SASS...
But it is quieter now.

My bike doesn't have a fuel gauge so I have to continually open up the tank and check... Or maybe it does have one and I just can't find (?) lol

Don't know about Keeway, but old school bikes never had a fuel gauge - just a fuel tap to switch between normal and reserve - often on the left hand side below the tank. Run it till it splutters, then switch over to reserve - then you have about 30 or 40 ks to full up. Also used the trip meter to keep track of how far I'd gone on each tank. Still do this.
I used to hate it when my old TZR spluttered out at the lights. It had a vacuum fuel tap, so I'd have to kick it over heaps to pull enough fuel back through the carbies - usually with other traffic waiting to get going behind me  Not so bad if I was moving with enough speed to draw it thru before it stopped (and that's without grabbing the clutch). Had to know exactly where the tap was for a quick switch in those days!

Well you will need some riding before coming out on Sass, If you have not ridden at all on the roads it would be a long night for you. From your place and back would be getting up to 200ks.
Again happy to head out before if we can fit it in.

Good Luck with the Learners.
Try and get some riding in. Easy enough in the evenings with these long summer nights. Anything is going to be good. Even just pootling around your neighbourhood. In fact keeping to roads that you know will help you gain confidence. It helps to keep doing the same roads over and over. Get as many kms under your belt as possible. At SASS, we can do up to 100 kms (at an easy pace) before getting to the carpark.
About the fuel, I have a fuel light that will give me warning but I don't rely on it. I know how many kms I can get out of a tank of fuel. SO before I even start SASS, I have done a little bit of maths in my head. Do I have enough to get thru SASS or do I top it up before we start? Such a habit now that I don't actively think it, I just "know".
And that is what SASS is all about. When you practise so much that it is instinctive and therefore if shit happens, you are thinking of the important things and the rest just happen.
Hope the finger heals and we see you at SASS soon.

Agree with everything Sis says, also think quality riding, not just running along a straight piece of road.
Practise, Practise, Practise (yeah I need to follow my own advice)
Slow speed stuff really helps you bond with the bike and get more comfortable with lean angles etc.
I think Sis meant to say, most SASS rides are about 100ks long, some are longer, some are shorter.
Most rides are upto 100 kph (motorway).
It isnt a race, its about being responsible for YOURSELF and how you feel comfortable.
Once you are comfortable about riding at or near 100kph, and try not to keep up, ride at your own pace, save yourself some stress. You will improve it will take time.
Some learn fast, others at another pace. The Guys and Gals at SASS will accomodate you, you just have to make yourself HEARD, speak up, dont feel afraid to ask or feel that you will look silly.
Everyone started somewhere.
I know I have been there done that(done all the wrong things).
YOUR RIDING IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and BTW enjoy your riding. :niceone:

After the figure 8's, I bet you all found the corners easier. Having a bit of a play sharpens the brain.

Old-school biking : Use your trip meter as a fuel gauge. Every bike you own one of the first rides you take is a fuel run. Gas the bike full, set the trip meter to "0", carry spare gas.
Bikes with a reserve
Ride until the bike runs out of gas. You can change to reserve before the bike stops (vacuum dependent taps take a long time to feed). Write down the Kms (yes write it down). Ride until the bike runs completely out of gas. write down the Kms.
If your bike has a fuel light
As above but you have to keep a close eye on the fuel light.
As SASS starts at a gas station( this is not an accident) fill the bike. Don't forget the trip meter every time you gas up and always gas to full. If cash is a problem it is a lot more worrying because you are working at the bottom of the tank.
In the early 90s bike makers made fuel reserve tanks and fuel lights give 50km at the most economic riding. I only trust it for 30km(bikes are BLOODY heavy to push) Regards Richard

Ok guys, If you have thought about doing a ART track day book in for the next one on the 15th of Feb. They are not getting the numbers they need to keep it viable and may not continue.
Couple of points to make. Its not racing. Nobody is allowed to cut you off in turns etc. Its very controlled. There is no mass start. They let you out in single file and in low numbers at a time. There is theory training and marshalls on the track at all times. Anybody behaves badly will be dealt with.
These are really very good and it would be a great shame if they are lost. Thread about it here, http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/172461-ART-Day-15-February-2015?highlight=15th
My call is you will learn more about riding and turns than you would in 5 years on the road. It does not matter what cc bike you ride as long as you are under 1000cc in the novice group.
For gear you need to have leather or textile that zips together and a back protector. This is for group 1 and 2. Above that its leather.

Definitely recommend this to anyone who hasn't been along before. Plenty of instructors and skilled riders to chat with and lots of teaching to take advantage of. Whether you've been riding 1 year or 10 years there's always something to learn.

Just go do it. Track surface is stunning, grip everywhere. Even in the wet. Its made to be grippy. You can try different lines and it doesnt matter as nothing is coming the other way to hit you. Some of the corners are wider than a motorway, 4 lane motorway.

Spokes, made a decision about Track Day Feb 15, decided to go with original plan.
Booking some training with Phil at Riderskills.
I figure that I can improve my riding confidence and basic skills better this way at the moment. I have started again learning to ride.
This will fix up my skills and push me toward my full.
This is the same skill path I discussed with Phil when I did my restricted a few months back. Back then he and I both agreed I had to improve in some areas - and this required I did some on the road k's before I attempted this.
I might have to book a couple of sessions to iron out a few bugs.
Then I will book for my full test and following that after a few months (or earlier) I will do some training about riding a bigger bike.
Then it will be summer and the Xmas rush by then if the Track days are back and advertised earlier enough I will give them a go.
And yes I have been on a 4 lane road with no other cars etc and still been hit (a week ago) by something coming the other way (a starling direct hit in the shoulder-no doubt it didnt fly away) I was going at a fair rate of knots :innocent:

All good. Tiz great fun.

not difficult stuff, just need some one on one coaching and plenty of practise & a lot of this :spanking: for not practising :devil2:
don't want to be practising this stuff with others right behind/around me - had few close calls on my own recently - not very funny
I will be trying to do this at slow speed as when I did this last summer my control improved a lot, lack of riding since then.

With a bike like that full revs out of a turn can be a bad thing as it will lead to highsides. You need to get the bike upright before full throttle. And on the straights with the amount of traffic you dont want to end up hitting somebody.
The guy on the R1 was leaning his upper body but not the bike, looked very awkward.

just thought the revs were a little low, wasnt thinking full revs, just make it easier to add as you exit..
thought the idea of track days was that the traffic is limited so you could get more time to practise byself without having to worry about others.
are there instructors following you, or was this the end blat around the track?

I know you'll get this sorted out after your session with Phil. :niceone:
thanks mate,
Most of the things are to do with slowing down.
I have found a loop I can try this stuff out without causing the neighbours to much grief :nono:
and I want to setup something else too, I have a cunning plan.
but I need to see what the things are that are causing the problems before I see Phil.
Like everyone says more k's, but I reckon its more quality k's for me at present (lots of corners where I have to slow down a lot), not just throttle off and power on or one gear change. With the brakes being applied and the throttle adjusted. Found myself at full throttle trying to stop, change gears mid corner, aye fun:no:
Yeah its coordination - more practise, and then I will see Phil as I planned, iron out the bugs do more practise.
Then do more learning. more practise. so I can get back to the sort of level of riding I feel confident riding with others
F2dz - riding, I found out its 'your responsibility' for yourself. Glad to see you are working on your skills.

just thought the revs were a little low, wasnt thinking full revs, just make it easier to add as you exit..
If you thought that footage was lacking revs you wouldn't want to see my first track day. I was pretty conscious of this last time around though and thought I kept my revs a lot higher. Last time I lazily sat in third the whole way round.
As spokes said, I'm pretty concerned about highsiding coming out of a corner if I give it a whack of throttle although I thought I was coming out of turn 5 and 6 pretty well. Like he mentions, I also did struggle with some of the traffic being too slow and not wanting to go balls to the wall due to this. I personally think some people need to be dropped groups if they can't match the rest of the group as I got kinda frustrated with some riders doing group 1 speeds in group 2.
After seeing a Yamaha MT-09 blast past me on one session and disappear out of side I do realise my bike still has a ton left in it, but the rider on top is still too afraid of binning his pride and joy.
Gimme a couple years and I'll be getting a purpose built race bike and I'll ride a lot more ambitiously. :)
Glad you like the footage though man, I can talk to you about where I got my camera if you'd like to get the same. Don't buy them from NZ. You get charged roughly $150 more for nothin'.

I would like to see how you did on your first day, its good to see progress, being cautious is a good thing, take your time, it aint a race.

Yeah, apparently contamination is pretty common from lubing or cleaning products. Before replacing, first try giving the disc(s) a good clean with brake cleaner. Just keep it off your paintwork.

And finally have the zxr motor sitting on my table so that'll get opened up tomorrow to inspect. If there are bent valves I have another motor lined up which i'll install on my next days off. If i'm lucky I'll just be doing the cam chain and seals as it seems to leak a bucket load of oil.

I know this feeling all to well.
Its how you pay for the mbike, think about it so its worthwhile.
Its also why I dont improve, too little not often enough and its no use riding to work its less than 10ks at 50kph, takes me longer to get ready before and after the ride than the ride itself. I still enjoy it, but I need the car 50% of the time for work, so its a matter of fitting it in.
That and reasons above mean that I will be at SASS intermittently.

looking at another bike already?
it was the mistake I made.
no harm in looking get a feel for what you want to do.
Theres plenty of options/types
if you ask the others see what they think.
Get your skills up on your current bike, its less costly and easier to learn.
THE OTHERS AT SASS RIDE THEIR BIKES A LOT, THEY PRACTISE THEIR SKILLS DAILY
THATS WHY THEY MAKE IT SEEM EASY.
Play catch up at YOUR OWN pace. - That's what I am doing sorting out the bike and my riding at my own pace, because I don't get much time to do it. Its taking me longer.
However I know someone who started on a 500cc bike and never looked back-no accidents
I know its like being in a candy shop.

I think Peter's bike is a GSX650FU, unrestricted though. If you're buying new/young then I'd also recommend checking out a Ninja 650. Cool bikes.
Or the MT-07 - It sounds like an absolute weapon for a LAMS bike. Probably no point in de-restricting it.

It's called RadioDrive and you can download it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiwiandroiddev.radiodrive
It reads out text messages, speed, weather updates etc. and also notifies you of missed calls and the like.

Thanks, Interesting, worth a look. I can see it working, but it will depend.
Although I prefer to ride by myself at night in the rain and dark (no phone ON) - silence just me, the bike and the road.
I think this will be a good addition when I have the GPS (finally setup) for those long rides when I don't know where I a going (which is most of the time :brick:)

I have had my current interphone brand units for a little over 5 years.
They have been alternated as daily use items.
I have had to make a couple of repairs to them but so far have not cost me any extra money. Got 2 years problem free before first repair.
Cost $200 for 2 units. I just bought another pair 2 units for $120 delivered. Will fit these to the new helmet when I get rid of this whooping cough.
Dependable up to about 120. Beyond that the sound is distorted.
Under 120 the person calling normally thinks I am in an office.
One word of warning though listen to music or turn them right down. It still gives me the heebies when cruising through the country side and a voice suddenly pipes up "in 500m turn right" and it doesn't matter how much I expect the instruction.
Something to watch for when buying: volume control.
Not all units have. It can be very valuable to be in a position to turn it down. Especially if you have not normalised your volume levels across all your music in some way.
Buy the best units your budget allows for. Read reviews etc. Most expensive is not always best. On my budget i could have had much nicer brands but with only single device synch and no volume control. Or I could have had a cheaper unit with fm radio and a memo record but again no volume control.
Also helps if you take the time to practice operating your system with up your gear and no bike. Ie what plays music or stops it? How about making or receiving a call?
Does my phone auto answer when connected etc. Bastard things to work out while moving.

If you don't want the phone function there are units without the mic. Or there were in November. Search eBay for BT music helmet. The boom mike takes up more room than you would think.
I went with a full Comms because I hardly ever get calls but when I do they tend to be time critical.
At least one probably two high value contracts only came my way because I was the first candidate to answer the phone first time. A valuable asset in IT.

One touch to initiate voice operated 2 way coms. From there it is VOX until you switch off or receive a call. Wired systems normally require you to thumb a remote to speak.
No phone necessary unless you want to make calls.
Works rider to rider for up to a km of line of sight or near line of sight. E.g not through mountains or concrete. Maybe through bush. At 5 years old I get 7-9 hours o listening to music on my mobile. Gets a little less if I get a few phone calls. Rated to 3'hours calls or 12 hours standby. Charges off USB.
I was thinking if I was going away for a longer trip I would chuck a twin USB mount under the seat to have a spare and the phone on charge. And or keep a power bank in the tank bag or my pocket.
This far I have only ever carried a spare unit and a power bank for my phone.
I haven't used it rider to rider or rider to pillion.
Wired systems mostly don't require their own batteries but have issues with cable hang ups, broken leads etc.
Parts for wired can be bought in most cities.
Most wireless parts are model specific and need to be source before you need them.
Wireless has less bits to fail or snag but you need to be a little more organised with charging etc.
Wireless is dependent on software, which can be a limitation if you have to much shit on your phone but means you can add apps if you want to pre map rides, trace rides, listen to music, gps, inbound text, voice announce inbound caller ID etc.
It is a bit if a trade off.
What did I mend over last 5 years.
Broke several mounts putting bags on with helmet already on.
Had to put some plastic in between the PCB and the buttons because they were a bit soft in sunlight.
At 4-1/2 years I had to get the audio jack re soldered, and battery connectors that failed while fixing them.
I'd guess both units between them have 2500+ hours of use and still work.
Best dude to ask re Comms is probably gremlin. He has all the answers but tends to favour gear not in my budget.

Double tap both hips = stop when at next cafe or gas station.
Triple tap = stop as soon as you can.
Tap the helmet = slow down and put your visor up I want to talk to you.
Double tap both thighs = slow down.

I am not planning to do more group rides until I get myself a bit more bike sorted - I have pointed this out before. However much I enjoyed the SASS rides I dont want to put others at risk.
The only other group ride I may do soon is one for Northern Odyssey, if anyone is still interested.
I dont expect this ride to be a tight group, just people can go at their own pace, maybe smaller groups remeeting at each stop or similar. (a backup of sorts)
Otherwise I will do this by myself, I have already tested stuff out when I went to Taupo the other weekend. - thats how I know what I have to fix.
I am currently looking at late Feb or late March or Mid April - will try to avoid Easter unless others want to go then. Its approx 1200 ks from AKL
My current touring speed would indicate 3 days, however 2 days for more experienced riders would easily be possible.
My initial plan: day 1: Akl-Wanganui day 2: Wanganui-Tauranmanui? day 3: Tauranmanui?-Akl or similar
open for options, suggestions etc. Quite happy to be at the back, I dont have any experience as being a TEC but who knows.
I want to be able to see the sights not just blast up and down the country. I havent seen alot of the back country roads.

Well I'll have to ignore the cheap stuff (probably the budget Big Dog was talking about  ) simply because I don't consider it, and usually use extensively, so the cheap stuff often doesn't work out, or isn't compatible etc. Not worth the hassle which I've seen many go through. Getting parts for knock off stuff, while cheap, can be more difficult. I'd rather pay the extra for more odds of support (plus user gripes in forums pointing out any bugs).
Wired, the main brands are Starcom, Baehr, and something, sounds similar to Starcom from memory. I've used Baehr since circa 08/09, still have the original unit installed in the second bike. Probably done north of 150,000km, including bouncing down gravel, fording rivers etc, and still works fine as it's permanently wired into the bike. Never broken a lead either. German, not cheap, a complete setup is usually $3-5k. Comms to pillion available simply by talking, the unit has auto-volume when wind noise increases. If only rider and you talk, it's a sing-a-long mode, volume increases. I believe when two are plugged in, it cuts the music upon detection of voice and allows talking. I say believe, as I've never had a pillion with Baehr, being all proprietary, it would be a long term gf / wife (don't have either). Used to be used by police bikes, might still be used by ambo bikes. Also has additional modules for bluetooth, it's a powerful system, but as said, definitely not budget. The brains is a box under your seat, needs power.
Wireless, main brands are Interphone (boss had an F5 or something and problems), Scala and Sena (along with proprietary like Schuberth, N-Com). There is supposed to be some compatibility between brands now (used to be each brand could only talk to another of the same brand) but I haven't had this working yet. I've had Sena for a couple of years now, most in IAM have gone for Sena and we're regularly linking multiple units together in 2, 3, 4 way intercom (any Sena unit, pillion or another rider). New Sena 20S is capable of 8 way intercom with only itself apparently (previous units limited to 4). Batteries a little annoying (charging your helmet is a great gimmick for those that don't realise tho) but cordless... pros and cons. I have the GPS (Zumo 660) acting as the hub, linking helmet and mobile to it, allowing me to control the mobile from the GPS. Occasionally something in the bluetooth chain drops and I restart the GPS / Sena and all is fine again. I have a SMH10R installed permanently in my N104 (10R is modular and needed because of the design of the N104) and a SMH10B for installation temporarily on other people's helmets. Bluetooth doesn't need a central box, just link devices together.
I use both comm systems currently, but debating whether to remove the Baehr as most needs are satisfied via Bluetooth, but for example, I can't be bothered with bluetooth for a ride tomorrow, and the Baehr is instantly available, no charging required etc. Baehr audio installed in one helmet, Sena on another.

You don't want to try this on the Scorpio tyres I have, it took the tyre shoppe over an hour to get it right for each tyre what a drama. Something I need to learn but not with Scorpio, with another bike yes.

Ok, so I watched myself on the vid (thanks Rob) for 20+ mins. I discovered the high speed fast forward option far too late into the vid unfortunately!
Anyhooo, whilst I can see my mistakes I still don't quite get why.
All I know is that in the vid I corner poorly, as Rob said MX style with my body remaining upright whilst the bike leans.
I know from last nights ride that leaning forward reduces my wind resistance and helps me corner simply because my chest isn't taking a pounding from the wind and of course my arms, being attached to my chest, have more control.
However I also noticed with leaning forward I can stay far more stable on the outside of the curve and don't cross the centre line nor do I do the "multple stabs at cornering" behaviour that I sometimes do (the whole corner event is far more contiguous and stable and consistent curve action from me and the bike).
But I have no idea "why".
Plus, Rob, I was told to "look over my shoulder" which I have no idea what that actually means.
Whilst leaning forward improves my cornering a whole lot, in my mind I am still somewhat crossing my body across the bike as it leans into a corner, i.e. my body is not in line with the gravitational pull towards the tyres / circumference of the curve but leans into the curve waiting for the bike to catch-up. I'm still not in-line but just simply no longer sitting up-right. Is this correct?
I'd appreciate some physics lessons!!

I wasn't there so could be wrong however I believe what is meant here is that you look over your shoulder THROUGH the corner. If you look through the corner, it unconsciously makes your body more comfortable and in the right position for the corner than when compared to being stiff and upright.
Watch this when you get a chance:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVWLIfChUwg
It covers more than just riding position and is a must watch for all riders.

Look over my shoulder refers to being my pillion. As you were in front of me you were not my pillion. :bleh:
The why is easy, your arms are bent and you dont have weight on the bars so you are correctly guiding the front wheel not using the bars to hold on with.
For position it will be easier to explain in person.

Leaning forward has nothing to with correcting ''crossing the center line or "multiple stabs at cornering" another issue is a fault here.
I had a CB1300 and put a very small Givi screen on it which took the wind blast off my head area. The bike itself is designed for the more upright riding position and they go around corners (once you have sorted your corner entry issue) just fine.

These days anywhere from 6-12 people or so. No one with rider training qualifications as far as I know but collectively there's a lot of experience between a few riders who go regularly.
If you're after high quality rider training it's best to seek out a course on offer from a registered provider - be it through ACCs programme or ProRider, Rider Training, etc.
These rides are really just about the camaraderie of riding with some tips and tricks thrown in by the more experienced riders (at least that's how I view it! :P)

That's what my 'etc' was meant to cover, but yes, him too!
You get a new camera Rob? Quality looks improved from last time.
Bunch of rain at the start of next week so I'll wait a few more days before booking that track day on the 27th.

Nice - definitely helps having the mic in a less windy position. If I don't use the one in my helmet I may as well not have sound at all.

Spokes - would be good to talk about tyre heat......... :2thumbsup
really noticeable on the narrow Scorpio tyres - so little contact patch.
Bike works much better with a little weight added and I scrubbed off some of those square shoulders I have been building
have to get the tyre pressures just right and I have to check before almost every ride :pinch:
Sorry wont be there next week - got those rocks to break at Waitakere Quarry
so will miss the tyre heat stuff :weep:, but you will have the balls
Got the dates wrong - rocks for brains :brick:
twas a great ride, I tried some stuff and its starting to work, better control - needs more adjustment (Levers) and practise.

Speaking of tyres, how did your new ones go on Sunday, Rob?
I'm wondering if I should be changing my rear tyre before hitting the track again. Sitting at approx 3mms in the middle, sides are fine..

Very well. See pics above. They tip faster and it seems easier to hold the lean. Rear has a bit of a flat spot but thats reducing quickly. Say there is a good few more track days in them which is great. Happy with them.
Some may say the Hawk wont be doing much more commuting and Sass work now...... ;)

IMHO they tip really nice, they feel like a giant gorilla gripping the ground, they feel fantastic - I know, its amazing how they gave me confidence, and I was only along for the ride. Enabled me to totally look up thru the corner at the top of my visor, just like you see on the track. Great sensation.:headbang:
Cornering was just blip,- it was over, unlike my long sweepers :nono:
riding was smooth and predictable. learnt so much about position, speed, traction, angle, braking..... everything really what an eye opener! So much more than what I was told I would learn.
If youse get the opportunity take it with both hands. :not: and we wasn't going fast at all.
I thought 6 months ago that the Hawk may have another purpose, as a commuter
