To be fair I doubt I will be along for some time now. Sharry will need my full attention for about 6 weeks. And with my wrist surgery on the 14th I will be a one armed bandit for a bit. Will have to find some very waterproof gloves for doing the dishes. Have been told I need 2 weeks off work and do nothing with the hand. I didnt tell them Im going back to work after the op. ;)
Outside chance i will be there next week but very unsure at this stage.

It's a 2007 but there are just a few things that haven't been taken care of by the last owner, all things that weren't picked up by my pre-purchase inspection either, which is annoying.

And NO complaints about death star was because I was being polite. :bleh:I was counting all the drops on my visor as we pootled along. I could see every one of them because of the reflection from my mirrors. That's why i kept wiping my visor.

If you're commuting, get dual compound tyres - tougher centre will last long with stickier sides for cornering. I find mine still good in the wet, never slipped... Those are Bridgestone BT45s and now Conti Road Attacks.

..yea, heard good things about these too. Are these what you run? I wanna hit up the track later in the year but also trying to get at least 10,000kms from the next set.

My current tyres are dual compound but they lost a mm of tread after 1,000kms. I heard they only come stock with around 5mm of tread anyway from new..!
Big Dog
2nd July 2014, 15:33
The first little bit should wear quickly as the compound is oiled to minimise hardening the middle 1/3 of the tread wear should account for about 2/3 of the wear because this did the part of the lifespan the tyre is optimised for. Then the last bit wears quicker because all the oils have cooked off and the material is substantially harder.
This is not the same as a dual compound. It is just a function of they have to optimise the durability of the compound so they aim to make the average ideal. The outer ends up softer than ideal, the inert ends up harder than ideal.
Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

2nd July 2014, 15:35
The net effect should be they scrub in quick, seem to not change for ages then they go from plenty of tread to fucked really quickly.

Gremlin, NZspokes, and Big Dog they have excellent helpful advice,
Since you really want good wet weather grip for day to day use = PR3 pilot road Cycletreads
I got Bridgestone on the Scorpio for wet weather grip - much better than stock in da wet, even when it was cold
Drury Performance - excellent service. Dunno what brands they have which would suit your bike/requirements
I would go for them PR3, as they are on the new bike scrubbed in already :wings:

PR3s are a brilliant commuting and touring tyre. But when pushing them and under hard braking they squirm. Thats a mix of a stiff carcass, soft rubber and lots of sipes. You will see on the PR4s they have changed the position of the sipes and brought them away from the edges.
For normal riding they are brilliant. But pushing them they turn into average. Like at a track day. My guess, and its only a guess is they found this with the 3s and thats why the changes on the 4s. I would like to try the 4s but may go down another route for my next tyres.
You need to be careful not to over tyre a bike. Older designs can turn sticky tyres into leathal tyres. Say a Hornet can start to get flexing in the back end with race rubber on, and when that energy releases you high side. Sport touring tyres are fine. But for a GSXR750, go for gold.
I would tyre the bike for its main use. So commuting, get a good commuting tyre. I dont know what works best on a Gixxer but PR4s etc would be a good choice. If you want to track keep away from 3s. I ran 3s for my first track days and the bike felt unsure in corners. Superhawk came with old model Roads which felt great. No odd movements, well except when on the gas out of turn 6.:shifty:

Definitely agree that you choose a tyre suited to its main use. If you're not an expert and are just starting out on the track, I doubt the finer points surrounding the PR3 and PR4 are going to make much difference to you. I mostly commute on my Fazer - I'm looking for value for money and a generous margin of error in the wet - so I chose the PR2s rather than PR3s and I'm very pleased that I did. So far I've done 23,000 k's on them. They are just starting to show some squareness and I'm starting to notice the handling degrade a bit as the bike squirms a bit over cat's eyes and inconsistencies in the road. While the Fazer has a bit more grunt that the 750, I don't go fanging all around town, so this helps the life somewhat. The PR2 would have been the business before the PR3 came out, so it won't be a bad tyre performance-wise. I think the main claim to fame of the PR3 was wet performance with the inclusion of the sipes. However I don't go to the track so I can't comment on the finer points of using them on the limit. But I can tell you that I'll be buying PR2s again next time around. The Previous Conti Road Attack IIs only lasted around 15,000 km and they were pretty square by then.

The other thing I forgot to mention earlier, if you "over tyre" your rubber never gets up to temp. Leading to reduced grip and increased wear.
Sport tyres on my gsx1100f used to wear out on the sides while there was still plenty in the middle. Awesome for being silly on but crap for commuting.
Sport touring tyres. Got hot quick and were a little noisy on the likes of the coro loop but they stick and wear evenly.
Screw brand, get the best choice for your needs

it's got a good rain on at my wellys . And my bike is in the warehouse so i have the car 😡
I have just got home. Through all the mist , wind, and rain.
I have checked the rain radar and it is coming in. Apparently North are having wind issues.
I am making a call here - no ride for me! Sorry if I am being a :baby: but don't see the need to be out in the worst of it.
But I will be at Bronco's having a hot chocolate. Will bring along some of my mags - Americam Motorcycle Association , Ulysses, etc for a bit of reading
So if you want to join me, you will find me indoors at Broncos.
You might not recognise me at first as I will not be wearing motorbike gear:rolleyes:
Well I was dead wrong. Started raining as I was walking to the carpark then only got worse on the way home.
Wet and cold means quiet night inside for me. Sigh..

Something I like to remind myself if on days like today. If I had just left work and encountered the same weather I would have just dealt with it. The fear comes from the talking about the winds all day. Co workers and the press.
This causes doubt.
Doubt causes anticipation.
Anticipation causes stress.
Stress causes you to ride stiffly.
Riding in a stiff rather than fluid manner causes all impacts from the weather to be amplified.

Mostly consists of sitting in front of a computer. Doing stuff that puts people to sleep when I try to explain it.
Interrupted by trips to make coffee. Glorious excuse for exercise.
Being a news organisation every man and his dog stops by to talk to the IT/web guy who rides a bike about the tragedies that await him on out roads whenever unusual weather is about. Largely because although I leave later to avoid traffic rain or shine hail or sleet they know I will be riding.

Can't remember either Mack the Knife or Man Down Under had made one out of 9 by 2 with rungs nailed on for traction. Teeter about 12 - 18 inches of the ground...
Brought it along to NASS when it was still AWNMR and held at what is not the Oteha valley Park and Ride.
Much scarier trying to ride Morcs CBR400 was way scarier. So small. Handlebars behind my knees.

At Woodhill in the days I was fit we used to ride MTBs and we rode over structures 3 meters above the ground. Not me but you get the idea.
I was really hoping to get along for a ride last night since it's school holidays and so no netball practice for the girls. Then my wife reminded me that we had a meeting scheduled - darn! I'd been watching the weather and it looked like it might hold north of the harbour bridge for the evening - in the end the weather disintegrated, so I didn't feel so bad about missing the ride that didn't happen. :weep:
I'm not a great subscriber to the view that it's really difficult riding in the wind - in fact I kind of like it. I'm not that keen on moderate headwinds because it just makes the ride really noisy and uncomfortable. But I like really heavy cross winds - when you feel the bike get blown leewards a bit, but in the process it just leans itself into the wind. Just keep yourself in the right lane position and let the bike do the rest.
However, last night was pretty hard work getting home. The combination of heavy wind, rain, heavy traffic, poor visibility and night time at motorway speeds makes for a tense time. Heading up the hill to the Mt Wellington over-bridge it felt like I was doing 200 k's into the wind - it was one mean workout on the neck muscles!

I agree with you, It was the unexpected GUSTS which made it difficult, the constant wind wasn't bad-was kind of nice.
Different directions of travel some felt like there was no wind others not bad, but the GUSTS they moved the bike whole lanes at a time, which made it slightly worrying when being passed on a two lane motorway

A good start is being able to cross a curb without putting your feet down. Have you tried to ride the length of a plank without wandering off? For some this is a major skill in itself.
We used to play "follow the leader" at walking pace. Each rider tries to maintain a 2 second gap on the person in front. Person in front tries to pick a path that results in putting your feet down.
Usually that involves curb crossings, edge traps at angles, threading the laces, stopping on a spot without putting feet down and then carrying on etc. If you put your feet down your out.
First person to put feet down buys the last person a beer, same as a slow race but with obstacles.
Most of us will need to put a bike on a truck or trailer at some time. The worst time to learn is when you have to. So do you know how to load or secure a motorcycle?
Would you, could you and should you ride it up?
Do you know how to walk a bike under throttle? (stand beside your bike and power it up a slope or a ramp)
Do you know how to "apply a brake" to the rear wheel when walking a bike? Why is that an important skill?
Do you know how to pick up a fallen bike? What about a heavy one?
Do you know how to manage a scene if you are first one to an accident?
Do you know when you should remove a helmet at an accident?
Do you know how to remove a helmet?
Return to acceleration from emergency braking.
Thread the laces - start of in carpark a cross the carpark to the other side and do a uturn, how many car parks did that take? keep going and back at the start try and do a uturn the other way, was that bigger or smaller? Why?
keep going and do a uturn in the original direction can you do it in half a car park less this time?
Rinse and repeat until you put your foot down or you can't make the turn in the allowed space.
Peripheral vision awareness: stand in front of a row of shops. Look straight ahead. Read the sign. without moving your head or eyes read the one to the left, right and repeat. First try you probably can't but give it some practice and you will be more aware of your surroundings.
Bean bag tag around a set course. Everybody rides around a set course while people toss a soft ball or light item too each other without actively trying to hit the rider. If you hit a rider the person who was catching gets on their bike and joins the group of riders the person hit gets off their bike and joins the ground crew. This is an exercise in timing (because the tossing is reasonably choreographed) and in not being distracted by things that can't really hurt you as you do what you can to stay on moving.
I am assuming from the content of the thread there is regular braking, counter steering, cornering etc practice?
I don't know what exercises you guys have down at SASS and I have no intention of leading anything I am more interested in when time permits coming along and learning something new, but these were the popular ones at AWMNR / NASS.
The hardest lesson to learn is if you think you know it all, you just don't know enough to realise how ignorant you really are.

Will answer a few.
I can bring a bike along on a trailer if anybody wants a go. Getting it to stay on the trailer is about the right tie downs. Yup I ride it up, push it up, whatever I feel like at the time.
I dont pick up heavy bikes, I let the owner do it.
I like the idea of throwing a bean bag at people, lets do that. 10 points for a head shot?
Speaking of tossing at Sass may end you up in places you didnt expect.

I doubt many people could honestly answer all.
All were more questions to make you think in the right directions. No one person has all the answers but if you start out with the right questions you learn faster. Those were just some of the fires I tried to light to keep people coming by stepping a little outside the basics on a regular basis.

Hey guys. I have had no internet since the end of May/beginning of June. Got knocked out in a storm and had limited/no connectivity ever since until now. I'm good still doing up my bike as money and weather permits. It needs some mechanical love now - fresh fork oil and seals, brake fluid and pads etc - all stuff you expect at 50,000 kms. I plan to come back riding with all of you in summer with a bike which goes as good as it looks. This is how the bike is currently - it is the same one - remember the dented rusty tank lol?

Know what you mean, mate! Brrrrr! :cold:
Mrs Caseye (yes, poor long-suffering wife of the notorious Mr Caseye here on KB - yes, I'm talking about you! :Pokey:  ) suggested those cheap clear plastic gloves as a liner. They cut out the wind completely and reduce the chill... AND if it rains, your hands stay dry too.

Ok, to stay warm you need to have the layers like this. Waterproof/wind proof on the outside, insulation material next to the skin. I wont work with the wind proof layer next to the skin. That layer just becomes cold and is just as bad.
So get some over gloves, proper winter gloves or hand guards on the bike. Hot grips will help but the gloves need to be right also.

Put yer gloves on the panini toaster before you head out - works a treat!
Seriously though, back in my Michigan days, a trick we used to use was the run our hands under the hot water for as long as we could stand it, then dry them and put our gloves on before going out. Really toasty for quite a while!
Mind you, that was for -5 to -20 degrees C, so I'm not sure if that needs to be done here...

I'm surprised there aren't more heated gloves for sale...
Had to ride up to Orewa first thing Tuesday for work. Nice frost here when I left at about 7:30 just before sun-up. Haven't fitted the heated grips to my new ride yet, so it was pretty cold. Sun was up by the time I hit the city and my fingers were just thawing out - with a bit of help from the clutch cover on the downhill sections. Then I crossed the bridge and man was it cold - and it just got colder as clouds covered the sun towards Orewa - fingers were so sore by the time I got there. Couple of minutes holding the clutch cover with gloves on and they were recovering nicely.
The waterproof overgloves are supposed to make quite a difference, but they are fairly restrictive. Probably worth it on a cold wet day though.

Just seen the weather on TV.
I am taking my bike to work as I have an Ulyssian funeral to go to tomorrow morning. And then I am going to be at the SASS in the evening.
The weather may hold off and I will need some bike time after the funeral. No - it was not motorbike related death. Most Ulyssians funerals are not bike related.
I apologise for any spelling or typos. I am finding that my new computer is not the problem. It is the new keyboard on my lap. It bounces around a bit as I chill out on the sofa.

Big shot of whiskey will cure it!
Whiskey contains alcohol
Hospitals use alcohol to kill germs
These kind of germs travel around in our blood stream
