Most GSX and GSXRs can have their headlight changed without tools if you come up from underneath.

Most faired bikes can unless they have a full skirt (collection of pieces that stop air from going up under the nose of the fairing so that all air going in goes to radiator) in the fairing.

Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

full skirt - mmmmm will have to be non PC and look up there:killingme

will have to look with torch when I get the chance ;)

on a more serious note thanks for advice. I am sure I will get caned over this one

And what about demerit points? If you all ready have some they are added to the total and start all over again.

By the way, I have put my liners in tonight ready for tomorrow.

Nope. I've always wanted one of those ever since I had my 250 Ninja but the right one never popped up on TradeMe in time. I haven't even ever test ridden a 636, only a later model ZX6r. That's a beastly bike though.

Nice ride last night in spite of the cold, peeps.

For those of you whose hands have just thawed, try some of these: [URL="http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/parts-for-sale/handlebars-handlebar-parts/auction-734435002.htm"]. It looks like Cycletreads also do them for the same price. They are pretty easy to fit yourself as they are connected directly to the battery. The new controller is pretty good at switching them off before flattening your battery, so you don't need to go looking for a switched power supply.

Second bike with them. On an unfaired bike you'll either need hand guards or good gloves with more insulation on the top than them bottom to get the full benefit below 5c. Above 14c or for shorter hops I normally wear summer gloves.
For the price they are bloody cheap and seem cheaper the more kms you get out of them.

They definitely work. I don't use them all the time, but they certainly make a big difference when it's really cold. High will make them so hot that you wouldn't want to hold them with a bare hand while stationary. When you are riding they cool down really quickly if you're not holding them. I use a relatively light weight winter glove, and while the tips of a few fingers might get cold on the outside, the heated bar makes it really pretty comfortable. For less than the price of a decent pair of gloves, they are well worth it.

Oxfords are good and easy to fit with a good array of sizes to fit different bike styles. Sports are wider than classic for example.
Oxford do a set that Velcro over existing grips for the winter. Recommend you check the clearance between you grips and compressed levers before buying. I only sold 2 pair, both to people who wanted to return them because they could not effectively use the brake with them on. Both were warned to check this before buying.

Daytona are good but a little lower quality on the finish stakes and if you are not gentle on fitting one grip may be warmer than the other. ( or so said a customer who bought some who said they have had several sets before. )

I don't have any experience with any other commercial ones. But I have used oxfords for about 7-8 years.

There are plenty of do I yourself setups on the net. These carry a fair amount of risk with what you were talking about.

Simplest DIY instructions were in a Superbike magazine so could probably be found on their website.

check out what they ought to be, maybe different front - rear

I try and check pressures weekly and using the same gear, same time and temp - so results are similar.

I only have experience with Oxfords. My DL650 came with them and they worked OK. I think they were the standard model. I'm now on my second set of Oxford sports Hot Grips on my Fazer. The controller from the first set packed up after about a year/18 mths, I think due to water inside it - pretty disappointing. In the meantime, Oxford have completely redesigned the controller and it is a lot better and now completely sealed against water ingress. It is also easier to fit since it doesn't have a second controller box under the seat. The auto cutoff is also a lot more reliable and does actually switch the unit off after a few minutes of turning the bike off (it detects the reduction in voltage noise once the engine is shut off). The old unit supposedly detected voltage drop to switch the unit off, but I've had to push-start my bike on at least 2 separate occasions after forgetting switch them off. Not an easy task in a flat carpark wearing full winter gear!

The sports Hot Grips are a little slimmer than some of the other models Oxford offer. They are still a touch thicker than standard grips - but not enough to cause a problem with the brake lever. One person I spoke to said he had a problem with the rough texture of the sports grips being too grippy when reaching for the brake/clutch levers, but I've never had a problem with this. However I do seem to be wearing through the clutch grip quite quickly. Fortunately I have a spare set now since I didn't need to change them over with the new controller.

The auto cutoff is also a lot more reliable and does actually switch the unit off after a few minutes of turning the bike off (it detects the reduction in voltage noise once the engine is shut off). thanks AWS, nice review, still thinking about these above (heated grips) or glove liners, heated jacket with/out arms. They all seem to have equal pros and cons maybe NZSPOKES can point us in some other direction to look on the web, just cold one some days, would be nice if the jacket could act as a fridge as well on those hot days

Peter knows about SASS through Ulysses so I am not sure if he comes on KB at all.

But the REAL BIG question is if you bother to wave at your KB mates:no:

Well 3 of us were left speechless as you tootled past on that sexy beast of a bike. Maybe that is the reason right there.

We were stunned. We had our bikes lined up and MellowYellow was the first. How could you miss that beacon of a machine, even when it is silent.

Next time I'm gonna wave, scream and shout to embarrass you. Still dunno how I missed you all.

For those who enquired last night re Leather Custom Clothing.

Motorcycle Safety Wear

1 St Kevins Arcade, Karangahape Road, Newton, Auckland

If you go in person be wary of getting lost, its a little cubbie just at the top of the stairs (hang a right, its a single doorway with leather racks etc if you go down the long flight of stairs you've gone too far). Its unassuming so be warned. :wacko:You need to be certain of what you want, maybe bring some pics or sketches in to maximise your time and her expertise, she knows what she's doing and is reputable but be realistic cos its leather. Girlies, great corset shop upstairs opposite the cafe...just saying...luscious stuff in there.:msn-wink:

Whatever you get, just make sure the lining is long enough. I got a new Rev'It jacket a few months back, but now that it's getting colder I've discovered that the lining is probably 6 inches too short. I guess it might be OK with textile pants under, but I usually wear Draggin jeans when it's fine and now I get a really cold line around my middle.

For those who don't know Ulysses, we have a runs list that is about 6 months out. At the beginning it is stated to turn up early with an empty bladder and a full tank. You would be amazed how many of them will suddenly pull off for petrol or a potty stop at the very beginning of the ride. Hence Theontidote's comments. He will have witnessed that a few times too.

I should also mention here that 10.30 is the leaving time.

So empty bladder and full tank.

We also have a ride briefing before we jump on our bikes.

I think the Waikato group will be at Autobahn about 9.30. I am planning on lots of chatting and a coffee before the ride.

I am taking an Ulyssian Ride on Sunday . Leaving Bomaby Autobahn at 10.30. Showing the Waikato Ulyssians a bit of Hunua. Some of the roads that we have ridden. Like the Gorge Road, Skyhigh, Twilight and West.
You are most welcome. Come along and mix with a totally different bunch of riders.

We will leave Bombay at 10.30 15th June.

Lou and I are doing a reccy on Sat. Yep, Maakz that is Lou, the one who chatted to you. (she is irresistible or was it Mellow Yellow?)

Sorry, I have Daddy duties this weekend. Have fun.

Essential info for the newbies to SASS:
South Auckland Street Skills or SASS

WHAT: Learning and improving Riding Skills
WHEN: Tuesday Nights
WHERE: Meet at Z (ex-Shell) Service Station, Cnr Great South Road and Taka St, TAKANINI (the one with a Burger King)

I have been out on my motorbike on Sunday. Twice I rode Twilight Road. And twice as I came over the top of the twisties, I had a bike with its wheels just on their side of the road but with theirs bodies and heads on my side. I guess they have no wish to live long. If you or your loved ones ride, please gently remind them how to live longer. It might not be me but a truck next time. Take care.

I had posted the above on Facebook.
Very ironic when, at SASS, we encourage how important it is to keep your head on your side of the road, yet twice in one day I encounter riders who are risking their lives.

People quickly forget: the biggest difference between the road and the racetrack is at a racetrack there is a reasonable probability there is nothing coming the other way.

remember the car which pulled up just before we left Z, and what i said... :brick: maybe new car drivers should have a green flashing light for the first 5 years or foreign drivers could have orange ones and LED arrows on dash of rental vehicles. Stop sign. Sign written Holden introduced itself. Luckily they went for the sustained loss of traction. I managed to hold the Holden back with my DR350. Not without $3800 damage. But at least I was not thrown under the car currently occupying the intersection at speed.

I didn't get knocked, just lucky I planned ahead and left it gear (some instructors suggest put it I neutral)
scorpio better in gear - neutral can be tricky - not worth effort unless stopping and getting off

I was in gear but had nowhere to go. Car moving rapidly right to left occupying the only forward space. Given the confidence I now feel on the DR I might have tried to jump the curb. Not sure that would not have ended worse though.

I bought the DR for economy reasons in 08. Promptly took it off road a few times.
Even after 15 years as a road rider, it made a learner out of me. It has made me smoother on the road, and better at controlling unexpected slides etc. I really need to find the money to rebuild the engine and do some more of roading.

After 40,000 kms my only regrets on the DR would be not off roading more and not getting a dirt bike for commuting sooner.
If I did not have so much motorway to cover daily I'd still be on the DR for commuting instead of selling the 'busa to buy the CB.

There is also more of the work you can do yourself and parts are cheaper.
Had I known that I would have a small windfall of 2k just after I sold the busa.
I would not have bought the CB and the same 2k would have gone on rebuild or over bore kit for about $500 a throttle cable and left me enough cash to upgrade my gear. And I could have kept the busa.

Still happy with how things played out, but in the long run this will be the more expensive option.

how does the busa compare to the CB, different horses for different courses?

Doing work myself, I have 2 left hands and two right feet, always well meaning but seem to do things backwards first (just me) so takes longer.

I have been offered rides and lessons for off road experience for free, which is nice, but haven't taken offer up due to work, not sure if confident enough and wanted to offer to pay - something maybe I will do over later (want to be able to pay for use and damages )

Completely different beasts...
For a trip to Taupo from here I'd rather take the Hayabusa.
Gnarly as down the back straight of Pukekohe the couple of times i have been round on the way out from marshaling. Absolute mile muncher, still pretty sharp round the Coromandel loop but it makes you work for your lunch.
It will turn very tight with the right in put. With a bit of practice I could put it round the RC track including the dreaded hairpin... but that is tethering the clutch the whole way. The big downside to the Hayabusa is that when lanesplitting you get very sore forearms. From a heavy hydraulic clutch and gearing that has a minimum recommended speed in first of 20kmph (but to be honest 35 is more realistic) and the low bars.

I have not had the CB long enough to form that kind of partnership but it turns so easily I doubt it would be hard.
It does everything you could ask of a commuter exceptionally well except be thrifty with the fuel.

The CB is quite sedate by comparison happy to lug around below 5 kmph without the clutch, although that will probably change a little when i put a bigger front sprocket on, but she will still have a go at pulling your arms off.
CB is superior below 80kmph. Hayabusa superior above 130kmph, to the point the CB feels almost like you are being mean to it going over 120 so I never have possibly because it only has 5 gears and in top it feels like there ought to be one more.
I suspect the previous owner went down a tooth at the front or up 3 at the back to improve acceleration. The other one I test rode did not feel like it ran out of gears so early.
When I have a little spare capital I will add a tooth or two to the front this should remedy the thirsty nature... hopefully without ruining the low speed handling.

If I could have both I would. Selling Cleopatra to buy Jezebel was a purely financial decision. I could not afford the upkeep of a bike that needed types of maintenance that were outside my skill set. The CB is much simpler mechanically.
Selling Cleopatra was made easier by the fact that she had been parked up for various intervals totaling over 2 out of the last four years. I felt guilty owning a bike like that that was not getting used because it needed bits I could not afford to buy. The new owner has fixed her up real nice.

IF I ever find myself in the position to indulge myself in a toy bike (and I already have the Alice DR running) I have no doubt another Hypertourer is on the cards. Maybe not until I can afford to go touring regularly... until then I am sure the CB will do a fine job if the opportunity arose to go do a south island trip... especially given I have done a Cape Rienga trip on a 110 cc scooter. Size is not the be all and end all but the boy inside likes big bore bikes:drool: At least 1/2 of that is that I like a bike that is physically larger.
IF I can find a good one the Hayabusa is likely to be a preferred choice. I have to be honest having not ridden the newer model I prefer the looks of the older model.

nice! I havent ridden a busa or a CB but appreciate the info - makes sense to me. I would go with the CB as it sounds more practical and reliable but maybe a little boring. enjoy the ride, make use of its nature. My Scorpio is great loves going from 50 to 100 = SASS as the local roads suit it.

I wasnt thinking about the bike, just interested in how other people see bikes, why they buy them and what they use them for. After you buy them then you begin to notice different things - sounds(muffler), comfort, economy blah, blah , blah and what really matters is when it is being used day to day and what people feel after they have had several different types of bikes. For some reason motorcycles seem to be traded quite rapidly, cars dont seem to traded as much (to my mind).

He was one of the people who got me interested in biking again and take the plunge into giving it a go, rather than just dreaming about it.... followed by confidence boost by joining SASS

I didn't get knocked, just lucky I planned ahead and left it gear

Yep, you planned ahead and stop playing it down. It was more than luck. It was your skill. You were obviously watching your rear and had a hunch that the vehicle was trouble. Amazing how skilled one can get at reading what a vehicle is going to do.

OMG

I would so love that.

But I instantly see the issues with the exhaust system.

I am having enough trouble with my existing exhaust system. I dragged it again on the ride on Sunday. Something about being out on the roads and enjoying the company, the day etc. It makes even more noise now.

I think the real answer is to have no muffler. Then there will be nothing to drag on the road.

In isolation that sounds so dirty. Especially on mobile where the emoticons just show as text.

Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

Stink, whats it not doing? Ive been known to fix the odd bike.

it's not revving! well past ~13k rpm anyways, don't know what's happening and so busy at work i haven't had much time to look at it. I'll not being sent away for another week atleast now, so if the weather clears i'll get some gopro footage of the issue

Looks like it might be a lovely afternoon tomorrow at Maraetai to sit with a coffee and watch the world ride by.
Anyone interested in joining me?

Is this after some work on it or it just happened? Pull a plug and see what it looks like, post it up.

Yes we could do action shots on a particular corner so I could get a good pic without being in the way. So it has to be fairly open.
Also the rest of us need to park up nearby, safely. And you will want to turn around in a safe spot and return again and again. Thinking caps on.

I would be up for that. Finding the right corner would be the hard bit. Something without to much traffic.

A roundabout would be good.:shifty:
