Yes suspension all sorted. Gone from 90mm to 75mm length cushion rods. Changesd the spring setting back to std and repositioned the front forks and unwound the susp back to std. Oh and yes I did remember to adjust the side stand at the same time. All that is left is to adjust the headlamps back. Bit wet tonight so tomorrow job.

Lol, yeah, shoulders felt better by the next day. It'll take me a while to be comfortable on longer rides (than my 10 minute work commute), but it's still a fun bike to ride, so I can forgive it that; it's really me, not the bike anyway. The more I ride, the better it will get no doubt.
I didn't get your question about tyre age... I'm sure there is something you were getting at, but I'm not sure what... Care to enlighten?

Tyres that look good sometimes are old and hard. You can date the build time of your tyres. If you buy a second hand bike you dont know how old the tyres are.
Pro Tip, the build date is written on the tyre. Tell me when yours were made....

Oh cool, that's good to know, thanks. I'll take a look in the morning out of curiosity and report back.
When I first got my VTR250 it had old, hard rubber on the tyres, and they were really slippy, especially in the wet. I couldn't use the rear brake without it wanting to lock up and overtake the front, and had to be super careful with the fronts. So I replaced the tyres with a nice set of new Michelin Pilot Streets, and it completely changed the nature of the bike, it felt like a different bike to ride. It inspired way more confidence cornering and braking; it just felt more planted and stable. Best upgrade to that bike ever.
Something I only learned recently that surprised me is that bikes that come with OEM branded tyres - like Bridgestone Battlax BT016 (for example) - have a different, inferior version of that tyre variant than the aftermarket tyre with the same name and labelling. That's a bit of a sneaky trick. They should have to name them something different to differentiate between the better, multi-compound, aftermarket version from the lower quality OEM spec version.

Funny you say that. The tyres on my bike are Oem off a GSXR750. Seem to hold on fine.

If that was who waved at the bearded dude with a nearly one year old. Hard to tell with the sun behind.
When the group was approaching I instinctively nodded then had a good laugh at that. Meanwhile miss started jumping up and down on my hip and waving.
When the biker waved back she giggled like a looney. Miss 2 was waving frantically from inside the car.

Here are some interesting (or possibly, depending on your point of view, mind-numbingly boring and pointless) stats about last Tuesday's ride:
Distances: My home to Z Takanini: 31Kms. Z Takanini to where we stopped at Mercer: 52Kms. Mercer to Broncos, Manukau: 58Kms. Broncos to (my) home: 24Kms.
Total Kms ridden: 165. (The ride took my odo from 93Kms when I started up to 258Kms when I got home.)
Fuel: From filling up at Z Takanini to filling up at Z Mt Albert at the end of the ride: 6.18Ltrs consumed to do 134Kms trip, which equates to 4.61L/100Kms.

I thought that when I wasn't there you did bigger rides. Apparently this is not so.
I can fill at the beginning (put my mileage to zero) and when we get to Broncos (often missing the carpark) it is reading just over 100 kms. This is when we do Waiuku Tuakau Karaka loop
You guys need to toughen up and do a big ride when you say you're going to.:scooter::scooter::scooter:

Date wrong. Got to go back to that dreaded four letter work to appease the creditors. Were thinking next week or weekafter but weather starting to look like mush. Never mind it aint going away.
Spent most of day riding. Out on the GSX round waiaua pa this morning(roadworks by 7 day cafe n vege place. Note for tuesday ride). Then after some home chores out to Clevedon on the VL. Cant waste these great days.

last week I did the tues night ride :Punk::Punk:
i did did the same run Thursday and included the end of the waiuku run, grandas favourite:drinknsin
made it home just in time for curfew. Unlike Tuesday when we got talking.
i have already done a big ride recently, it wasn't a challenge. It was a great boogie out in the middle of the island. It was a great unplanned trip. No balls no car parks. Just me and the road, and the odd other road user, who were very nice. The roads were on the whole much better than Sth all tar bleed crap.
pity more SASS members weren't on the ride.:corn:
i passed Yes I PASSED :yes:about 20 other bikers who were pooling along on their Harley's.
very gratious they were too:woohoo: true story

maybe we should do a 300 k run no fuel stops that would be a challenge:devil2::devil2:

as the saying goes ' at the raising and settling of the sun, we shall remember them '
its a good time to slow/stop as visibility is reduced, esp when travelling toward the light
ride within your lights - granda nice to see your lights have improved - you will need to adjust to your new suspension settings too.
Sis, you should consider a light augmentation as well, your light is like a candle in the wind.
still got to finish my light wiring :brick:
levers adjusted - much better, need to get adjustable ones to make it 100%. But riding is a whole lot better, I can reach the brake at 50% of the throttle.
doing longer rides to build up muscle lost. Then will do those rides that require more control like Maraetai etc.

I rode past him the other morning about 8:30. Bike on its side in the fast lane right in the middle of Tip Top corner. I didn't see what the bike was, but he was wearing a red and black jacket and leaning up against the median barrier holding his left shoulder. While he didn't look real bad, he didn't look very comfortable either and had obviously been there long enough for an ambulance to turn up - it was parked in the fast lane south bound. There were a couple of cars stopped, but not terribly obvious what had happened.

so who was asking about a economy run? 300ks non-stop? Im in for that challenge.
I'd be up for that... My best economy on the GSX-R was 4.3l/100kms. I have a 17l tank. The maths says I only have to average less than about 5.6l/100kms to make 300kms, and I've never really ridden this bike in a deliberate attempt to be economical yet (well it's only got about 600Kms on the clock so far), so I'm pretty sure I can do 300kms on an economy run... Challenge accepted!
I went for a little blat out to the lookout point at the top of the Waitakere ranges today (Pukematekeo Lookout) to test out my Contour Roam camera. What a beaut ride! Great road surfaces and nice curves complemented by fantastic scenery. The cam was disappointing, cos of the low light performance, but I got a couple of nice shots with my phone at the lookout point. Whr r u front braking at 50% throttle
the more experienced riders should be answering this
but here I go:
when you are riding you are one of the following
stopped
cruising
accelerating
coasting
braking
- in my case singing and asleep.
when slowing down, I don't want to be rolling the throttle fully of before engaging the brake, as the front of the bike lifts and rolls a longway BEFORE any deacceleration. Every second at 100 you delay braking is quite a few metres you have travelled before you START decelerating. is that the right word?
BEFORE I adjusted the levers (and I still want to get adjustable ones - can anyone point me in the right direction/shop) I had to roll of the throttle fully and just caught the levers with my finger tips, sometimes there was a slip:brick:
Had a few good moments on several parts on my ride to Taupo, no accident but...a few OMG moments..
does that answer your question?

Nope, Heel and toe, One hand One foot.. Or do you have 2 right hands? Or do you reach over with the left hand to use the brake?
unless you have an extra left hand brake? they exist but mostly for racing. Or have one of the older bikes with the brake on the left (Sis do you remember those?)
Not just for the track either or racing, its about control and not letting the bike coast when you want to brake. Think about it.
and Rossi is for the track. You don't see Rossi on the road.
Maybe some of you don't understand.
And Granda, For the NO I need to go to Whanganui, so I saw a film the other day about the general Neighbourhood - Deliverance :corn:
maybe you should see it to be familiar with those neck of the woods, as I have to go via the River Road, where they have horses with odos - so they say.
and those night riding in the countryside, be aware of cars with only passenger headlights travelling in the middle of the road on left hand bends - DONT ASSUME ITS A MOTORBIKE

Maybe we should have a Challenge every couple of months - not something impossible, just to test and see what people know about their bikes and capabilities (rider/bike awareness - its a combination - to be as one on the road)
We are all different with different bikes so the Challenges need to be appropriate. or tailor fitted.
its doesn't have to be a ride, it can be technical like Spokes questions about tyre age.
eg Cant expect low fuel useage from a Honda  esp RED ones

To be clear it could be unsafe for riders to try this on one leg. I would advise regular breaks for water etc.
So umm.... what's the challenge? Can we double it? Wait... I still don't see a point
Yes yes, I'm on my way :chase:

Left foot braking is a car thing. I know what he means. Heel and toe for downshifting back when cars were manual shift.
Some couldnt get it and end up flying into the shrubbery. Yup I used to teach a bit of that back in the olden days. Apparently I was an ok driver. :shifty:
Lots of overseas drivers use the left foot, you can see the brake on while accelerating, as well as the rear tail light. And quite often in a panic they end up in the shrubbery.
hence the practise of E braking at Sass is a good thing, repetition breeds automatic response and familiarity with how the bike responds and what you can do next.
noticed how you didn't rest with your hand op last time. But good luck with the leg. Take it easy.
MOST IMPORTANT GET ACC NUMBER. In case something else happens later.
i am just starting to reuse my foot and shoulder and it's been a couple of months since my second accident. It's coming back to full use, takes longer when your older.

it will be tailored for each rider to take their own assessment and see what they can do. 300k won't be a fixed point but rather a goal for most mere mortals.
i don't think you will achieve yours..... Watch this space......

Don't forget ya chaps.
Im also a little unsure of my future at Sass, it would seem im suffering a little from exhaustion. :( I may need a break for a bit. Will update on this when I know more. Also turns out I may have fractured my leg a week ago. Monday I will be seeing about an Xray. Little pointless as they cant do much.
Rest up man, a break is usually never a bad thing.
I should be there tomorrow. If Rob isn't there and someone wants to be followed and filmed on the ride then let me know.

You can brake and blip the throttle at the same time , lock up your left arm a bit and use your Palm the thumb to control throttle . I have big hands which help abit .lol yes XXL gloves for me .

brake then blip = YES, otherwise bike rolls forward under no control and front rises as drive is lost. causes all sorts of hassles for a noob.
Palm - Sounds good, i will give it a wurl, thanks.
Still think adjustable levers would help too. going to have to visit a bike shop, i guess.

yeah thats what I have on my bike.
Remember to write down the pressures so you have a record. Check tyre pressure regularily. My tyres loose pressure when left for a few days.
they are great tyres in the wet. Doesnt take much to warm up. Check tyre temp each time you ride, gives you some idea about grip.

I have to say, commuting is progressing my skills bloody quick ( i feel ) in bike control, lane position etc, being forced to deal with it. Quite comfortable chucking the bike around, having the tiny frame its got is fantastic around the city. Not bad along the motorway either.
Definately need to get the clutch sorted though, its getting worse slowly, but only when i'm ripping through the gears with a good whack of throttle. Little gentler, its fine.
Got a bigger payday this week, hopefully i can get hold of some tank grip, that should help a bit, theres absolutely no grip on the tank LOL

I found a simpler solution when doing NASS was to have 1/2 the people throwing tennis balls to each other randomly accross the exercise area.
If lobbed, a tennis ball is unlikely to do more than cause a distraction but forces the rider to pay attention to their surroundings rather than look down.
We also tried calling out sequences for an audio distraction which worked well but tended to give people the wobbles so not good for the person still fresh enough they look at the switch when indicating.
When I was a rookie I did not have anyone teaching me so I sat on my running bike (on the mainstand) with a blind fold on and had my neighbor call out instructions. E.g bring the revs up to 3 and a half k, left indicate, lights on, dip, right indicate rear brake only, etc. until each was something I did not look down for and I did not have to think about.
To be fair that was before I did my BHS.

SASS Challenge #1
For me a Challenge is something that takes me out of my comfort zone, it may or maynot be possible to achieve. It may mean that extra work or something else is required to achieve goal.
It doesnt mean life or death type of experience, this is a thread for learners. It is to enhance the understanding between rider and bike, develop a relationship that enhances the ride and enjoyment while on and off the road. It will require some thought about rider and bike capability.
It may require risk but you will be in control, you need to plan and access any risks you encounter.
Above all i will remind you YOU ARE RESPONCIBILE FOR YOUR RIDE.
In doing this challenge you may need to get assistance from others you trust, it doesnt need to be done in one go. It may require you to stop and get refreshmnents or take a break and walk around, check the bike or map etc. For those crafty buggers it doesnt mean refueling mid run or putting the bike on stands or altering any part on the bike (like a bigger sprocket). If you cheat then you are only cheating yourself and your own self repect. It isnt a time based event, speed is governed by the standard road rules. Yes its based on the road not a track. Standard fuel not Avgas - SPOKES. Sounds complicated right? Its easy, as long as you keep yourself safe.
If you have been riding for a while, (some of you have) then you will know what you current expected tank range is. The challenge here is to run 50% further on one tank (the one you usually have). You may take a reserve fuel to get you to a petrol supply as a backup, but not counted in this challenge. Using normal Road rules and keeping off the State highways as much as possible try and keep this to a minimum say at least under 50% of the total ride. Keep the use of the same stretch of road in either direction to less than 10-20%. It will take some planning and maybe a few rides to sort out what you are capable of. You might need to do it over several runs or take breaks whenever. You decide, the reward is knowing that you can plan and be in control with your bike.
So for most their range is typically 200k, at 50% this would mean 300k trip on one tank.
I suspect true sports bikes I would look at say 25% extra range. You decide what you feel is a challenge. BMW 1200 GS riders with a standard range I would guess of 600k (maybe more?) at 50% 900k would be your goal.
Anyway it is a test of bike and rider combination, see what you can do. Remember to keep your fluids and stop brakes up as this will help with concentration, good road position to make best use of lines (economy) and smoothness.
have fun. Eldog :2thumbsup For those experts, extend yourself further, I will still catch you. :bleh:

then you need to increase the %, increase 50% to 75%. then see what happens. it supposed to be a challenge if you can do it reguarliy then its not a challenge its what you could do without effort. reduce motorway use to 5% and remember no using the same road in opposite direction <5%. if you can do 100% increase then that would excellent

Just worked out my fuel range on the 12 should be 380ish ks.:shifty:
Google was telling me it would take 1:09 to get from Newmarket to Hill Road on Friday night. The southern motorway was showing as "black" (congested) all the way from the Harbour Bridge to Hill Road. So I decided to try Manukau Road and the Southwestern Mway. Took me just under 30 minutes and I hardly had to split traffic at all. I reckon it would've been 40+ minutes splitting all the way on the Southern.
I'm finding the southwestern to be a quicker, easier, and safer option on those nights when Google puts the travel time at over 50 mins. I'm just trying to work out which route is the best (i.e. has the best bus-lanes) - Manukau/Pah Rd, Gillies/St Andrews, or Mt Eden Road. I'm also considering whether to try some of these on mornings when the Southern is particularly slow.

Here at SASS, we try not to be judgmental but encouraging as we try and stay on top of the game.
I have to point this out to you here, seeing as you wont be along tomorrow. Otherwise I might have done that ear-twisting thing that grandmothers do :killingme
Too many out there are riding too fast. If they think it is showing what proficient riders they are... well it doesn't do it for me.
Nice to know some are being careful.
Well said Sis.
Time some realised that speed in and of itself isn't an indication of proficiency in any way shape or form.
Merely the precursor to a horrendous crash!

His twin brother must ride on the Southern - there's a guy on a brand new Honda Repsol CBR600RR who wears full Repsol leathers rain or shine but he crawls along.
Don't think I'll be there this week sorry. Got some work I have to catch up on so might need Tuesday night free.

I don't think people go fast in order to display their proficiency I think most just ride fast to ride fast.
Didn't mean to come across as judgemental re that guy, just that usually most would assume that a guy in a Marquez helmet, Repsol leathers and Repsol bike would ride like he's dressed. But therein lies the problem with assuming..

Ok you Orrible lot. Your homework for next week is to get your hands on a 3B1 note book or the likes.
On the front page I want you to write down as many specifications of YOUR motorcycle as you can find either in your manual or online. The one you will need for this time will be front suspension travel.
Bring the book and a pen along with you.

Just added this to the NASS, seems alot less structured over there than the SASS but here you go. Some Dutch shit
https://www.cbr.nl/motoroefeningen.pp
These are the excercises that have to be done in the Netherlands if you want to get your license. Can't get google to translate the website so here's a little recaps:
It is mandatory that you complete at least one excercise from each cluster
The examiner chooses three exercices you have to complete
So in total 7 excercises have to be done with confidence and up to standard. If you give the examiner the idea that you're not in control of the bike, you fail. If you can't get it right on a second try... you fail. (no pressure there)
Cluster 1:
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/cluster1-Achteruit-parkeren.jpg
Parking the bike, you'll have to push it back into a carpark. (Can't be on the bike)
Cluster 2:
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/cluster2-1-Langzame-slalom.jpg
Slow slalom (mandatory) - Done at walking pace, with your feet on the pegs and without touching the cones
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/cluster2-2-Wegrijden-uit-parkeervak.jpg
Riding out of a parking space - Sharp corner to either left or right without losing balance
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/cluster2-3-Denkbeeldinge-acht.jpg
Figure 8 - Write a nice smooth number at a constant speed within a rectangle
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/cluster2-4-Stapvoets-rechtdoor-rijden.jpg
Riding at walking pace in straight line - keep your feet on the pegs and don't go faster than the person walking next to you
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/Cluster2-5-Halve-draai.jpg
U-Turn - speaks for itself
Cluster 3:
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/Cluster3-1-Uitwijkoefening.jpg
Evasive manouver (Mandatory) - You're riding 50km/h and oh shit there's a truck/car whatever suddenly on your side of the road. Miss that shitty driver and get back to your own side of the road before you hit the wall.
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/Cluster3-2-Snelle-slalom.jpg
Quick slalom - min. speed 30km/h and do it smoothly
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/Cluster3-3-Vertragingsoefening.jpg
Delay excercice O.o - from a full stop you speed up to 50km/h, slow down to 30km/h after the gate and shift down at least once, and navigate the cones that follow at that speed.
Cluster 4:
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/Cluster4-1-Noodstop.jpg
Emergency stop (Mandatory) - min. speed is 50km/h and stop as quickly as you can with the shiny parts up and the rubber on the road
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/Cluster4-2-Precisiestop.jpg
Precision stop - min. speed 50km/h and stop at predetermined spot.
https://www.cbr.nl/imgcontent/Cluster4-3-Stopproef.jpg
Brake excercise - Just regular braking, just before you come a complete stop you downshift to first so you can ride off again. (think of it as a traffic light excercise or something
-----------------------
If like me you started with your motorcycle license, you're not allowed on the road unless you got your vehicle control certificate.
If you already have another license it's up to the instructor whether or not he thinks you got enough control over the bike to take you out for a ride on the road. And even then it usually consists of riding to and from the storage to training area.

Pretty smart marketing when you think about it. How do they remind you of the brand? By getting you to go and use up some of the remaining life of a product they sell!

On the way home, I pulled up behind a vehicle at the lights. I gave myself heaps of room in front and watched as the following vehicle came in behind me. I was ready to gap it, if they weren't going to stop in time. They did. Parked right up my arse because they didn't like the gap I had left in front of me. Light changed to green and the vehicle in front suddenly put its hazard lights on. It had died. Well, I had so much space in front of me that I could get rolling and then do tight manourvering around the stationery vehicle and GONE . Hehehehehe
