Details of what will be happening each week will be posted on the thread.

Check the thread for more information...

who is going to mentor these days?

My husband and I for a start.

We do mentoring with Ulysses. Trained by Andrew and Lynne Templeton , paid for by ACC.

And I am hoping that other mentors out there will help out too when they can. Spread the workload and then SASS should keep going.

Good on ya. I'll bring my gf to this ride for a bit and will help out too when and if I am needed. I'm not trained or qualified by anyone but I can ride, 2 wheels and 1 with God as my witness!

If you don't need the practice on the open road yes it is OK but the ride is part of Street skills . As Sis is running Sass she is the only one that can reply to your question Regards Richard Nass

Hi

I have an idea of the ride I want to do to the car park in Manukau, from the Service Centre and I need to go out and check it. That will give me an indication of how long it will take and then I can let you know about what time to expect us there.

I will confirm times later this week

Papakura Cervice Centre is the BP on the southern Motorway. Sis can confirm when she is back from holiday,

Whats to confirm? The Papakura BP also known as the Autobahn is located on SH 1 going south take the exit "after" Papakura, it is sign posted by Gas Station and Mac Donalds signs. Hard to miss. Whether this is the place we are meeting or not I don't know, but that's Papakuras biggest service station.

Thanks for letting me know about The Bog. Shame but there are other places in the near vicinty so I can't see a problem.

Now that I am back from holiday, I am keen to get SASS started.

See you on Wednesday.

2nd March 2010, 19:55
OK so we are on for tomorrow night!

Just got back from checking out the roads. Planning on taking it easy for the first night and just doing a little back road near Clevedon. I reckon that eventually we will do quite a bit of the infamous roads around Clevedon such as Ponga, Skyhigh and Twilight but that's in the future - something to look forward to.

We should be at the carpark on WiriStation Road, directly opposite the Police Station about 7.30 or later. So if you don't want to do the ride, we will catch ya at the car park.

Also checked out The Bog and yes it is locked up! Thanks for the heads up Birdhandler. Had a look around the Manukau Centre and the Republic looks good. we can park our bikes with in sight. It is around the back, beside Nandos, I think, and near the movie entrance.
If we try it and it's not so good, we will try something else another time. Taking that thought further, it could become a version of a pub crawl. But of course we don't drink:innocent: so we would have to call it something else.

Looking forward to meeting you all

Sorry

So keen, I forgot to confirm that it is the Service Centre between Papakura and Drury and only accessable when you are travelling South Bound on the Southern Motorway.
There is an Autobahn there but there is also another Autobahn at Bombay. As I can get confused real easy, I keep referring to either Papakura or Bombay Service Centre, and not Autobahn. So it is the PAPAKURA Service Centre that we will start from.
I will try and park outside the Autobahn (depends on space).

Glad you could make it after all.
We certainly gave your brakes a bit of a workout too.

We did Twilgiht Roaad tonight and found that we were a bit late in getting to the carpark. So we will have to say that we will get to the park about 7.45-8 pm.

Then we had Mike pop over and have a brief chat before he was back to work, sorting out the cleaners at the Council.

Bikes bring out the bikers no matter where you are.:Punk:

I liked the Republic. First time i have been there. Not surprising really , for some one who doesn't drink:innocent:

See you Wednesday

So Sis you doing SASS every day 7 days/week for rest of the year till 16 December. Looking at calendar is on today, and every day, and today is not Wednesday. So I see you and your hubby are mentoring with Ulysses, so are you going to ride like them, bugger that. Well done .
O and other thing you saying it is all pay by ACC, so if you doing this every day, you are like full time employee for ACC. It is about time for someone to get some back from ACC, is that what you and Ulysses are up to? I'm just curious.

Thanks for the Heads Up about the event listed on the calendar

Don't know what is happening with it.

I have deleted it off the calendar for now, tried to put in a new event on a weekly basis but it still came on as daily.

Got myself a bourbon .:drinkup:and will have another go soon.

As to being paid for doing this. Nah, voluntary.

Been riding bikes for about 40 years (off and on - mixed in with raising Family) and I was self-taught. We had no training available back in those days. I was given the opportunity thru ACC and Ulysses to be trained as a mentor and I have taken full advantage of it. Now I want to pass on the knowledge so that we can all enjoy our bikes and avoid the hazards out there.

Edit: It's on the calendar correctly now. Amazing what one can achieve after a bourbon.

Last night's SASS meeting was hella-awesome.

We spent a lot of it practicing emergency evasion using strong countersteering both on the road and at the carpark later on. After practicing that all night my bike now feels incredibly easy to steer, I'm having trouble remembering how I used to steer beforehand.

The carparking area where we practice is really well setup, it's like a big oval course; one length was for emergency evasion and the other for slow speed slalom (actually the 180 degree turns at either end of the oval are fun too). There was a really nice flow going on there.

Thanks again to Howard and Jayne.

Safe and sound Jayne.

I think we left the pub at the right time, there was a good lull in the rain.

Was thinking about our ride out to Clevedon last night; I think going at 70-80km/h when we have 'L' platers in the group is a good idea but on some of those 100km/h zones there was some dodgy cager overtaking going on. I wonder if going at 100km/h would have been the lesser of two evils.

Sis
28th March 2010, 18:43
Hi

I'm back from a weekend in Christchurch.
I was thinking along the same lines, about the 70kph.
If Twilight Road is to be ridden, the speed has to be increased on the Clevedon Road.
We can discuss it this Wednesday before the ride.

See you all then

For those of you who weren't there, my headlight had blown low beam, after we had started our ride. I had Grashopperus in front of me and to save him from being blinded by high beam all the time, I dipped (no light) when the road was straight and there was no traffic.

I really enjoyed riding with out lights. Wasn't spooked at all. Didn't mean to give you any problems Grasshopperus. It was easy not to have lights, with the full moon and you in front, and Thaeos following.

Bought one of the newer lamps (I think they refer to them as blue ones).
You can't buy one, they come in pairs.
Apparently they are 40% brighter.

Hubby has put the other lamp into one of his headlights ( ZX has 2 headlights) and he is noticing the difference.

When I came home from Saturday's Compass ride, I did notice the headlight on the garage door seemed to be brighter, and that was in the daylight.

Will be able to see what it is like this Wednesday.

We did more of what we had done the week before.

Then on the way home, the motorway on-ramp for south was closed so we went around the back(Alfriston). Coming into Papa
kura saw more orange lights flashing up ahead, so turned down Walters road. There was more roadworks and another road closed there too but that didn't affect us. Seemed like all the road works were on last night.

aws
10th May 2010, 22:41
Yeah, I found my favourite on ramp closed the other night too and had to take a long cut home.

It'll be great to catch up with you again, when you do get a chance to join us.

Weather isn't looking too bad for tomorrow night.
The plan is to do a short ride thru the counrty, just to acclimitise riders to night riding. Then get to the car park for lots of practise avoiding tennis balls. It may seem boring and repetitive when you do it every week but it works. Once a month isn't enough really. I have noticed my skills are sharper for practising every week.

Hi Caseye,

Ratbag's a good sort, a real pleasure to have along with us. Unfortunately, Howard, who has a habit of corrupting us learner riders, let her have a sit on his Harley and I think she fell in love with it :)

When Howard attends SASS and there's a few more people we generally split into a 'spirited' ride group and a more leisurely one, so you're welcome to attend too.

Cheers

When Howard attends SASS and there's a few more people we generally split into a 'spirited' ride group and a more leisurely one, so you're welcome to attend too.

Cheers
Al

Yes she did and NOW People I've hells own job trying to get her to stop drooling when she sees or hears one.
Many thanks for the invite one of these days i will come along.

Great mentor to student ratio there the other night: 2-on-1. Thanks guys! Decent emergency braking practice too! My bike probably still doesn't know what hit it. Need to crank up the speed a bit more now and see if I can hold those stoppies a bit longer. I thought the bike would be a bit long to get the rear up so easily. Would be good to set up a longer run-up maybe down the road in the middle of the carpark so that we get a bit more time to settle on a target speed before hitting the picks.

See you again next time - but maybe not next week.

Practising emergency braking using just rear, just front and then both brakes was a good experience. It was also interesting pushing the front brake to the limits :innocent::shifty:

Hi there,

I am a total newb (almost 40 but licenced riding for the first time), but for various reasons (age, height & width) I'm excused from the 250cc limit, however I am not planning on doing anything stoopid while on a larger bike. Obviously with a bigger bike comes bigger risks, but I'm trying to mitigate them with proper training and hopefully not forming bad habits from the beginning.

I work in the city, and probably would struggle to make it to Papakura by 6:30 or 7 - is it possible to meet everyone in Manukau?

I am VERY keen on making full use of something like this. Advice is always appreciated - even though SWMBO has upped the life insurance...

I think you are on the right track. I was self-taught. Forty years ago there was no training or education. Now I am trying to correct some bad habits.
I suggest going to a licensed trainer to get a good start on riding.
We are just a casual group that get together to sharpen our skills. We are not licensed and we are not trainers.
You are most welcome to join in (as long as you don't expect to be trained) and we tend to get to Manukau anywhere about 7.30 to 8.00 pm.

peetah
17th July 2010, 21:58
Correct - I am going to get the bike first (bought all the gear today), and then have been recommended Trevor Birchall for some training and then hopefully you guys to help with advice & tips. Be nice to have the basics right first time rather than having to correct bad habits after they become ingrained. My apologies for suggesting that I was going to get training from the group.

Sis
17th July 2010, 22:04
By the way, Welcome to motorbikes. ( Sorry bad manners)

You suggest starting with a bigger bike.

I don't know your bike history but I would seriously consider starting with a smaller bike. This will give you the confidence and you will quickly move on to other bikes soon enough.
If you get something too big, you are going to scare yourself and it will become a mind-game that you will loose. I have ridden with some who have done just that - started on a bike that was too big and gave them some seat-puckering moments. They developed some nasty habits that they seem unable to improve on or remove.

Lol thank you!

I have been having an argument with myself about that exact same thing. The issue that I have is that I am 6 5 and about 130-mumble (on a good day) kgs, and I was out today and just don't fit on any 250's. My commute is from 'rewa into the city and I have to be comfortable. I am not the sort of person that has 2 speeds on the throttle (off and full-tit), and think I have the self control to handle something slightly bigger. I am not looking at a 'busa but something around the 600cc mark.

BTW I got your pvt message, but due to me being such a newb I can't reply. I DO understand what you said in it though, it was my thoughts all along, I just didn't word the posting correctly!

Don't bother coming out tonight.

I will pop over to the gathering points in my car, just in case someone has come out tonight.

Then I plan on checking out venues (pubs/cafes) that are open on a Wednesday night that might be helpful in being able to show dvds. The idea is that on evenings like this we turn up at chosen venue in whatever transport, to sit in a warm dry room, with our chosen drinks, watching dvds of such things as The Dragon's Tail or Isle of Man TT etc. A bit of theory . And a good laugh at other people's mistakes.
If you know of a place in Manukau ( cos its handy to everyone) please let me know

Welcome to the group. Look forward to meeting you at SASS sometime.

I can see why you'd be struggling on a 250. I've just got myself a DL650 VStrom after a 20 year break and I think it will come down to the style of bike you choose. Even at your height my advice would be to go with something reasonably compact (i.e. not tall like the DL). It is much easier to learn low speed control on a shorter bike where you get better leverage from your legs.

Anyway, that's my $0.02 worth.

I couldn't find any suitable venues but since then have noticed that The Bog seems to be back in business. I suggest we try that tomorrow after car park skills.

The Bog is now called O'Ryans and is under new management. They are very ameniable and welcomed us with open arms. They are only too happy to have us there on a wet evening and will let us play our dvds. If there are other events on, we can use a private room. Otherwise we just remain in the bar and watch on the big screen:Punk: They talked of supplying nibbles too.
And we had easy parking under cover, right opposite the main doors.

I can see us in summer having a lovely time out on the deck. But for winter, it was lovely and warm indoors beside the fire (there is one outside as well)

This venue is excellent and really suits our needs. We could easily make it our very own if enough of us "move in" as their patronage is on the small side at the moment. They do meals and are prepared to keep the cook on late if there is a need.

I feel very satisfied with this venue and think that SASS is really up and rolling now.

What a great venue for a winters night bike destination/start.stop point. Freindly staff and accomodating management, could not have found a better place if we'd tried really really wheely hard!.
Nice to meet up with the SASS Crew and enjoyed a quiet but relaxing video show and a couple of quiet Guinnesses ( naturally made drinkable by the application of a dash of Raspberry cordial)
Did I mention that management made sure that our vid was on "all" of their monitors including the big drop down screen im front of our own booth, sound everywhere too boot!
We'll be back next week and I'd encourage anyone learning or getting back onto a bike to come along, course you white knight riders wot know everyfing could come too if ya promise to behave like!

Hey guys, good night on Wednesday eh? Small group but plenty of learning was to be had. We went on a great ride through the Hunua gorge, up Jones Road then followed Creightons Road back to Clevedon where we proceeded to traverse Twilight Road. What was extra choice about the ride was that it was still light at around 7:30pm when we were cresting Jones Road and you could see a mint sunset over most of Auckland and the Waitemata harbour.

Big thanks to AWS and Sis who let me try their bikes out, I'm still buzzing over the powerband of the CBR600 and the DL650 had power at any RPM.

Meeting at the BP as usual this week.:scooter:

But we need to discuss whether it would be easier if we gathered from another starting point.

See you on your bikes tomorrow

Sis
11th November 2010, 16:41
After much discussion, we are going to try meeting at the Shell Service Station on Clevedon Road, Papakura. It is near the roundabout and the Massey Park pools. Starting from next Wednesday 18th Nov

The idea is that some riders may not like travelling on the motorway and this is easier for us to head off out thru Clevedon or Hunua for some great bike roads to practise on.

I will be late as I will check that there is no one at our old meeting place first

Andrew turned up, after doing Twilight Road thru to Regis and back down Redoubt. He wasn't as late as me but got to the meeting place just after 7. I was soooo late that I didn't even try.
We had a bit of practise in th ecar park and then played "Sticks" where we try to put them down that tube while riding the bike. I need a lot more practise yet on that one.

We do mentoring with Ulysses. Trained by Andrew and Lynne Templeton , paid for by ACC.

And I am hoping that other mentors out there will help out too when they can. Spread the workload and then SASS should keep going.

Thanks for the evening guys.

I had a great time! This was my first time out of the city streets and the ride out to Maraetai was sweet. It's amazing how much more confident I feel after just a couple of hours. And after playing around and getting a bit of a lean on in the car-park, I've managed to wear off another row of chicken strips. Very pleased.

I'm an absolute novice with less than 1000km under my belt, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Anyone wondering if it is all going to be a bit intimidating needn't worry. Everyone there was super cool.

I recommend SASS to anyone.

And let's not forget the free fries at O'Ryans.
