I'm out for tonight but are there any interesting rides this weekend?

I am "In" for tonight...any pub is fine with me...If we are absent from the $250.00 draw for a week we may be better appreciated next time we go there.

They have headed towards Awhitu, kindly dropping me off at work at Glenbrook on the way past :(

There were a few in leathers hoping for a fine night but the rain has started falling here already

It was good to see Barbender and oldguy out and about, but it's just not the same without the 'Cs' (caseye and Crazy). Hey Din, are you still in NZ?
See you guys in two weeks, (Longer ride in two weeks time aye!?! Keep taking those HTFU pills every morning) as long as it's fine. I don't like riding in the rain! :-)

Ok I'm going to say it - tonights ride sucked the big kumara. It was way tooooooo slow, ok the weather was crap but who cares.
Sorry can't do speeds like that even if I'm not on a sports bike its way to boring, I'd rather stay at home and work on the Rat Bike.

Puddy I'm with you - longer ride and at a good pace.

That's all i'm interested in. If it isn't at least 120km (preferably more like 200+) I wonder why I bought my bike.

Short rides should be more like this: "Hey dudes, anyone want to go to the pub?"

Real rides are like this: "Hey bikers, wanna go for a bike ride? We might even find a pub on the way but if not, never mind."

As for the pace, you all know I hate slow. Don't mind waiting but slow aint for me.

Too slow? if last night ride was too slow, then I must have been moving at a snail's pace. Being new to group riding, and not knowing the road, i was a bit cautious. A lot of good that did me. I got as far as 13km from the Manakau Heads on Awhitu Road when I got blinded by some headlights on full beam on a blind corner. My bike hit some gravel, and we both hit the road. Ended up in the A&E :doctor: with fractured ribs on my right side and massive brusing all down my right side ( arm, leg, knee, ankle). My bike is f@#%ed, all bent and broken ( kinda like me).

I discovered three things last night
1. I was outclassed and outskilled by ALL the riders last night.
2. Group riding doen't agree with me.
3. The road doesn't like me!

Don't know when I will be riding again:(
Stay safe and have fun!

Bugger.... bad one Clinton and I thought last night was going to be third time lucky and you were going to have a great ride. Mend well, fix the bike and get back on it, come on a few daylight rides properly a better was to learn to ride with a group.

What happend last night? What were the speeds you were doing. Sorry I woosed out due to having a cold (which I'm dying from!)

I've gotta say though, I struggle to ride in the dark, so I'm trying to come along to these rides to better my skills. If the group is going to start zooming off at higher speeds, I'm not going to be able to come along anymore.

In the same respect - surely if you want to do those sorts of speeds you should be on the track not the road. The SATNR doesn't want to end up with the same reputation as our West Auckland counterparts!!!!!

What we all need to learn from last night is to stay away from Waiuku, it started raining when we got there and once we left the general area it was no longer raining again.

When I left and returned home to Pukekohe there was a beautiful clear night sky above me, go figure.

Tongue in cheek.

I've been happy with the pace of the previous rides. It was an absolute bastard that it turned out to be a wet one but at least I got to have a bit of a play later on when a Korumba, Lula and I took off for a squirt. The ride back home was good too once I got some heat into my tyres! Poxy winter. Thanks for running point there Lula!

I think plans are already being formulated for the route next week, I look forward to exploring some new roads. :niceone:

I wasn't referring to us doing high speeds but 70km is just not ideal for me so maybe I'm best to save 100km for the track? Or maybe we have a slow and fast group?

There seems to be a bit of a concensus that the speed needs to go up a notch. I'm happy to bow out of the rides until I feel comfortable sitting at 100k's in the dark.

Best off me do that rather than the majority pulling out cause I'm too slow. :baby:

Don't see what the problem is, people have said they're happy to wait but they just don't wanna go a slow pace... Surely then everyone should just ride their own pace like you should anyway and then the slower ones will catch up at certain points.

If the pace is too slow... Pass them?? :scooter:

P.S. I really need to change my cooking night to something other than Thursday :oi-grr:

The pace we had last night you would've been comfortable with. It was just that some people wanted to return to the pace of previous weeks to get their funfactor on. People shouldn't feel left out because of their pace, that's what the TEC is for, though we didn't have one last night. I'd be happy to run as TEC from time to time if needs be to stop that from happening.

What happend last night? What were the speeds you were doing. Sorry I woosed out due to having a cold (which I'm dying from!)

I was not here last night so can't comment on their speeds. However, when I say I like riding fast, I mean quick. That does NOT necessarily mean well over the speed limit. In fact my KTM would not even get close to double the legal open road speed and it's bloody uncomfy there.
I mean quick as in straights are boring; show me the canyon roads and I'll have a ball.

I've gotta say though, I struggle to ride in the dark, so I'm trying to come along to these rides to better my skills. If the group is going to start zooming off at higher speeds, I'm not going to be able to come along anymore.

Don't worry about that. As noted, quick not fast and we always have a mixed group. No-one has ever complained about waiting for slower riders in the SATNR. Each to their own and for my part, if you'll take the advice of an old fart with a high opinion of himself; I'm always happy to offer advice or look at your bike setup (suspension settings etc).
In the past a few blokes reckon they've had much better bikes after letting me fiddle with them.

In the same respect - surely if you want to do those sorts of speeds you should be on the track not the road. The SATNR doesn't want to end up with the same reputation as our West Auckland counterparts!!!!!

No Billie, see above comments. Corumba reckons we are more adult and I reckon that's how we like to keep it. That doesn't mean we're slow though.

Could be htis is being blown out of proportion. Frankly, my 50 year old eyeballs also struggle at night particularly with the glare of headlights behind and Jafars bloody stop light in front (if he starts in front cause he'd never pass me once moving: chuckle)

Not required Lulu; all we have to do is wait at some intersection and have a chat while the others catch up. Even going 'fast' it never takes more than a few minutes or ten.

sometimes we have an unofficial TEC but generally its not required as we always wait at intersections.

From my extensive experience (2.5 weeks) I have made the following observations . . .

There are 2 reasonably distinct groups
The experienced riders on the big bikes = the ones that usually go at the front
The inexperienced riders on the small bikes = the ones that usually go at the back.

I've found myself pushing myself pretty hard and sitting in between, I really should be taking a chill pill or I am going to end up like Clinton and Gummie :-(

I am also almost certain it must be bloody frustrating for the "front group" to have to sit and wait at every corner but we do really apprecaite the gesture.

I propose we run 2 groups and we have 2 options to facilitate this
- Both run the same route. I have a pretty good knowledge of the roads our side of Auckland so provided I talk to the leader of the front group before we leave we will catch up to you at your final resting errr socialising place eventually.
- Each group plans it's own route to reflect the time, speed and skill level - the slower group avoiding the darker, trickier roads. The 2 routes can end up at the final destination at a similar time with some very basic planning.

I think the fact we have had 2 bins in a month is really saying something.

I have been really impressed with the camaraderie (sp?) in the group in my short time in it, we can't have that trashed by those that want to go faster (and totally understandably so, it will be me one day) getting itchy feet and us slower folk pushing too hard and breaking ourselves.

Meet 6-6:30pm at the AutoBahn Cafe southbound at Drury - between Papakura and Drury offramps where the BP etc is.

Definately come along, we will get this minor speed-bump sorted real soon and the good times will continue to roll for everyone involved

I think thats a good idea for when there is learner riders in the group. How was the pace the week monkeymsea and I came on the ride? I know I was struggling a bit and he usually stuggles to keep up with me so he really must have been pushing himself. I like the idea of a fast group and a slow group and then meeting up at the same point later in the night.

From the last 2.5 weeks - me, you, monkeymsea, prettybillie, clinton, etc are similarly paced - we can do our own thing as long as we know where the others are going.

There is also a possibility that based on my/our local knowledge we set off behind them but take a few shortcuts and then they will catch us up again etc.

Sorry to hear and an unfortunate way to end your night. I hope you're ok and on the mend.

First time with the SATNR crew. Thanks for letting me ride along. Im looking to do a few more in the lead up to the GC. (:msn-wink: eh Patrick...)
so plenty of time for introductions as the weeks and miles roll by.

Gwinch you slim shady - you should have introduced yourself and your skipping rope.

Bit shorter than what I expected but IMO knowing and agreeing the destination and route at the start is a key element. Also bad weather on b roads will always spread the skill level and kill the 'fun' factor. But hey - we ride, learn and when conditions allow we ride our own race. Im not sure what happened with Lonewolf but I did think the group was well led once we got going. Normally there's enough inflated ego on group rides to raise the Titanic and not many would think to do a group count or ride to the conditions.

And besides the old fella and I managed to have a play on the run home. Still got it eh John?

See you all in a couple of weeks time and happy to be TEC on that run.

What the bloody hell are you guys and girls playing at?
No one is ever expected to ride as hard or as fast as the lead bikes.
The lead bikes have and always will, stop and wait at major intersections if required.
Speed is not the reason they're the lead bikes, their skills and proficency mean they' are simply quicker and as safe as they can be doing it, than new riders with no experience.
Night riding is a skill that needs to be practiced, how fast is entirely up to the individual riders concerened.
If SATNR has a or any rule , it's essentially that!
"Individuals ride at their own pace and no one is left behind".
I've ridden behind the main bunch for almost a year now and never had any problems with how fast or slow the riders in front were going. As the last one to the next major intersection, when I roll in it's usually taken as read that everyone is present.
The system (loose as it is) works, it has as long as I've ridden with SATNR.
The bins that have happened lately are reminders that inattention and inexperience will get you, so watch what you are doing,(this includes speed if it worries you) watch the road in front, the oncoming cars and look! hard for centre lines wet bits etc.
This is probably one of the more important reasons why we still ride at the same time on a Thursday night.
So those who feel they want to get better and more proficient at night riding can, in as safe an environment as possible.
Certainly it's why I'm never worried about taking the tail end charlie role, to see the newbies who arrive and ride and do it thier way and improve outa sight is awesome.
We ride together, we foster the youngsters and the newbies and if advice is sought we offer it to the best of our abilities.
So come on you lot, lets try and make sure that the riding experience is good for all and that as we always try to achive, we all get home safe and sound with some more experience and after having a damn fine time riding/socialising with our friends.

I had no idea it was you! :( I would've introduced myself if I had known there was another prolific member of the "Get In Shape" KB group there. Will have a good chinwag when you come along next time. :) I'm mixing it up a bit these days anyway, the jump rope gets slightly less use as I'm making good use of the freeweights I have at home... but that's another conversation entirely.

Yep everyone riding at their own pace is what's definitely needed, but having a TEC definitely takes the pressure of those who don't wanna be left behind especially on night rides. When I pop along I'll be all good to be TEC and cruise along. Though if it's as cold as it has been then I'll probably freeze if my body ain't forced to be throwing the bike here and there!

puddy
12th June 2009, 17:36
I agree with idle.... As long as you know where you are going and don't feel pressured ....all good! Never had anybody moaning about being held up by slower riders ..... don't know if we need two groups though. If there's only one 250/slower bike, what do you do? Go back home?
If we rode the same route EVERY week, and had, for example, caseye as the Grand Poobah, that nobody was allowed to pass, or even look sideways at. And maybe if the second rider (obviously the GP would be there first!) was to wait at each intersection until everybody (up to appointed TEC) had passed.... sound good?

To those that just said yes, GO WEST, that would be best!:clap::clap:

I think the same route every week would get boring fairly quickly. I think my main reason for riding as I did was because I had no clue where we were going. Maybe making sure that everyone knows where the stopping point of the ride is would be a good idea as well. I dont know the way that we went last week but I could have found my own way to Patty if I had got separated from the group.

I think that you are spot on! But apparently SOME PEOPLE find the certainty very reassuring (I know the Police do!)......

and that's part of the issue with the northern crew: the coppers know where they are likely to go.

in Sarf Orklind there are many more choices and we should take advantage of that.

As for you slower folk: I don't care how slow you are, I'll always wait at intersections so you don't get lost (not completely guaranteed though).

You don't bore me, I enjoy everyones' company.

Tell ya what though; I'd like to see a SATNR ride on a sunny day on the weekend some time. I reckon a few could help others sort out their bikes, riding, group skills (it's an art) and confidence if we didn't have night-time, wet roads and glare to cope with.

That way my wife could come too (she has almost zero night vision).

I think her Buell is deregistered for the next few months though.

I'm definately keen for us as a group to do some daytime stuff too.

Weekends are good, I'm a shift worker so week days work for me sometimes too, anyone else?

Ignore my speil above if the faster guys are happy to wait for the slower ones at every intersection but on the nights where there are 2 distinct groups some sort of split could be achieved quite easily.

Wolfrider
12th June 2009, 19:57
I think that scott has the right idea, maybe there should be two groups, I know last night i felt that i was holding people up,( my apoligies to those that were behind me), I don't like holding people up, as those with more skill and knowlege tend to get pissed off with us "slower" riders. Having one experience night rider opting to "watch out" for us newbies would really go a long way with encourging more new people to join the night rides. By the way, was I on the right road trying to find the group last night, i beleve i had my spill at the Awhitu/Brook Rd corner. I was going about 60-70 km.

Thanks scott for the advice last night. Would like to go for a ride with you sometime during the day when I'm riding again.

I think this group is great, and would like to get to know you people a bit more, but it is a bit daunting when you get left behind, and not knowing if you are going the right way. I am not saying we should ride the same roads every week, as that is just boring after awile, just that if there is a place that we can all meet up, so the ones that want to go fast, can go fast, and those like me that are "slower", with an experienced night rider, dont feel like we are holding everyone up and not worry about getting lost.

Those are just my thoughts as a newbie.

A lot has changed since I logged on this morning, sorry to hear of your Off wolfrider, heal up mate hope to see you soon.

I was TEC for the ride, you were in front of scottpalmer, i could see the tail end of the main group from where I was, so when I saw you turn off toward the steel mill, I thought you knew where you were going I knew scottpalmer was heading to work so tooted as i passed.

As for splitting the group, NO ive been with this ride since its beginnings, its had its teething problems, but hey shit happens.
What need to be established.

1 Destination, where we are going on the ride, everyone must know this, so at lest if someone does get lost they can just head too the Destination.

2 route, Idea on which direction we want to go, and any side routes or loops we want to add to the ride

3 Stops, Where we going to wait for the rest to catchup, or cigy stop

4 TEC, so those who are new to the ride, don't panic when they see the faster riders disappear out of site, and think they are going to get lost if they can't keep up

The most important thing and it has been said time and time again

RIDE WITHIN YOUR OWN ABILITY

The reason I don't lead anymore is I'm ether too fast or too slow, in the last year its been more of the lat_er.

Yeah it's all my fault, I put him crook by indicating to turn off to work which he saw in his rear view mirror. I stopped and told him the story and told him to carry on as the group would be waiting for him at the next intersection (in Waiuku). That was the last he saw of the group.

My bad, I should have made sure EVERYONE knew what I was up to.

Well Said Caseye, I don't really have the right to go on about whats right and wrong on these rides as I've only been on the past 2, but it should be all about riding to your ability and improving on your existing skill set, a little communication to the entire group at the start would go a long way to ensure that everyone will end up at the destination if they do get misplaced along the way, yes TEC is there to try to ensure everyone gets there, but ya know things happen people miss turns etc and sometimes people get overlooked especially when the weather conditions turn to shite like they did.

scottjpalmer
12th June 2009, 21:34
I appreciate the efforts to keep the group as one big group, but it does seem all us slower folk have the same feeling on the situation.

How about, at least on the rides I am on, I make sure I know where the group is going (as I said previously I have a pretty good idea of the roads in this area) and we can be a sub-group with the faster riders only stopping 2 or 3 times along the way for us to catch up rather than at every intersection?

Or would you all prefer multiple shorter stops than 2 or 3 longer ones?

oldguy
12th June 2009, 21:38
No its not mate, Its just shit happens, i could see the tail of the main group from where I was so i assumed he knew where he was going. MY Bad:nono:

Well said OldGuy, this solves all the issues, end of story.

As formal as it is, a brief of the ride needs to be given by whoever is going to lead, a TEC should be identified so we all know who that person is.
The basic route of the ride should be given so everybody knows where they are going and as mentioned, major intersections should be used as areas to bunch everyone up.

Thats my $0.02

Slack , isn't the word!.

Roads super slippery where we went today, being in the heart of the Meremere swamps was no fun today, rain squalls everywhere.
Rangiriri pub couldn't do eftpos and had a full house of hot rodders so we bailed from there up to the Muddy, lunched here then off to Tuakau and then home, not an ideal days riding but better than sitting at home.
C u an Stu on Thursday night then.

We went thru the hunuas, then across the lake waikare rd, back up toward tahuna but with a gravel road detour just because we had a rubber band drive rider. tahuna to paeroa, over to waihi with a detour on the other side of the river, up to whangamata, to hikuai and stopped at coroglen for food. Round the top of the coro and back home via kaiaua and kawakawa bay.

just under 500km.

a little rain, didn't actually get wet.
both had a few rear wheel spin ups, stu had a front go zip but no scars and no real drama.

Yeah 5 k's into it and my front wheel decided to head south and my balls shrunk to peanuts, was a timely reminder that I'm not as brave as I used to be, was good times watching Idle's rear end drifting around corners on numerous occasions. The XBr's rubber band isn't the best thing to take adventure riding, reminded me of an appropriate picture (see attached)... and my wife saying yeah sure go for a ride Sunday didn't quite equate to a "Day Pass" as I found out when I got home, oh well the dog has some company in his kennel again.:argue:

Thanks Caseye! I am concerned that we have riders saying - the speed needs to be at least 140k's. Joke or not - that is a really stupid thing to say and totally against what I thought this ride was all about.

As a relatively new rider I've really appreciated the likes of Caseye, Crazy Steve and Jafar who have looked after me, made fun of me (but never offended me) and have been instrumental in improving my riding skills. These guys are mondo experienced riders and have never had an issue with being TEC or waiting for us at major intersections!

If the attitude of we need a fast group and a slow group and the rides suck cause they are too slow, simply means that riders such as myself won't want to be involved anymore as one of the ways you learn is being with more experienced riders and mimiking their skills.

If you riders want to be mega fast and do stupid things - go and do it on your own ride - don't take the enjoyment and socialness out of the SATNR who really like it the way it is!

A couple of crashes here and there have made some people think twice about things... Better to be safe than sorry!

All it needs is rather then "turn up and go", make it "turn up, take 5mins to communicate directions and ride structure, and go".

OK I will be there on Thursday night, I'm happy to go TEC and I think from now on if I'm not going to be there that we designate someone else as TEC too.
Second, we can and usually do tell everyone present where we are going.
Most of the time, bearing in mind that some nights we just don't know where the ride is heading until everyone has got to the start point.
The issue of speed needs to be put to bed once and for all.
So here it is.
If you don't want to go faster than you feel comfortable with, DON'T.
Ride to your own ABILITY and enjoy the ride.
If conditions are rough, slow down, no one is going to give you a hard time for being SANE!'
I think it is a good idea for everyone who wants to ride on a Thursday night and get some experience at night riding and riding as a group( not necessarily in a bunch) to Pm either Jafar or myself and let us have your cellphone numbers.
This will enable us to keep in touch with all riders before during and after a ride.
Jafar rang me last Thursday night because I had said I was coming and I hadn't shown up.I thank him for that as I may well have been lying in a ditch on the side of the Southeren motorway, instead I was at home cursing at my inanimate computer.
So, if there are any more concerns about the SATN Rides please voice them here and lets get this thing put to bed.
As far as I'm concerned personally, I'd be disappointed if people still wanted to have two distinctly different groups of riders out on the same roads on the same night.
I feel it's not necessary and defeats the purpose of riding together (figuratively speaking) and gaining expereince from seeing what the older and or more experienced riders do in different situations and under different road and traffic conditions.
That my two cents worth.

F**k sake's, clear things up,

this is what normally happens someone has and idea for a ride, discuss ride where we are going, if you think its too short say so, the lead rider dictates the speed, which is normally a speed he or she feels comfortable with,

(don't shoot the lead rider) he/she is probably doing it, because no one else will, and just to get things going, otherwise we will be still pissing around.

They usually set the pace at a speed that suits there style of riding,

If you feel its too slow for you, by all means take over lead, no will be offended, you will find other faster riders will follow. Remember there are differing skill levels, the rest of the group will be fine, hopefully riding with in their own ability's.

The idea is to enjoy the ride with other like minded people who share the same passion for bikes.

Well I really i only came along because I thought I could pickup chicks:doh:

Oh and on the off that happened that night, had nothing to do with speed or someone trying to keep up, we lost a rider, he was trying to find us, out in the middle of no where, dark, raining, and the bright lights of an on coming car, read his post on it.

I miss you guys.

Sharper_XB and I ride at different paces, no-one got lost, no-one buggered off, we met other riders at the Coroglen, had a few wee moments each and great kudos to him for riding the Buell over 10km of ugly gravel when we screwed up a little.

Both the wives complained we were out too long but we couldn't hear them on the bikes while they sat at home so nya nya to them.

Lifes good, that's what it's all about.

Next time some of you others should come: it would have been a good day to do suspension setups or discuss lines and how to ride in a group etc.

The pace would have suited everybody, with pretty much every sealed back road in the South covered, fuck it was real dark on one road...a few marbles in places, damp spots here and there but all ridden to the condition's and the group stuck together. I'm only assuming this is about the same thing . . .

Tell me to butt out but I recommend Victim Support if you feel you have unresolved issues / thoughts / feelings about it. It really does help to talk about this stuff when you are ready. A quiet beer with mates can sometimes be just as good too, depends on the individual(s). I wasn't there but I know a bit about what happened, if you want to bounce anything off me please feel free.

My thoughts are with everyone involved.

scottjpalmer

No worries, it's a shit situation to be in and I feel really really sorry for you guys, been there done that so many times :-/ Did the cops at the scene give you victim support pamphlets/advice? Counselling sounds a bit naff, and I have personally never used it (the quiet beer with mates works for me) but I know guys who have and it has helped them no end.

Ha ha the good ole never ending draw. I'm working 7am 'til 7pm so I'll just mosey on along there (it's quite convieniently on my way home from work :woohoo:) and get there about 7:15pm, I assume you guys won't be too far behind.

If anything changes can someone please flick me a TXT (number in my profile).

Cheers, take it easy, it will get better soon

EDIT: So I'm a 'tard and thought I was sending that to Lula as a PM as I had had got the PM advising I had been quoted. Anyways, it applies to all and you have all seen it in your new post notification emails anyway. That's it from me on that subject.

Any volunteers to walk the dog so I can come along....

Well leave work and ride directly, sure the dog won't starve for one night.
Or send Jafar, me,oldguy, Idelioli or anyone else you can, a pm and ask us to wait oh I dunno about 15 minutes or so longer.
Seriously the ride doesn't leave till 7pm most nights and if we know we are waiting for someone we will wait longer.
Lets know.:soon:

Cats suck though - they are needy, demanding, bitches who only want you when they want something.....hmmmm sounds like a woman mwahahahaha

Just get a couple of cats to keep the dog company, eventually they start molesting each other
I should be a starter for tomorrow.

Haha - the dog isn't really the issue.
Right now I have to wait hand and foot on my flatmate who is on crutches.
The biggest problem is that the dog is smarter than she is and I get nagged.

Won't be a problem for too much longer as I'm selling the house and spending all the cash on bikes and other new toys.

Cary- Is that your business ? I'll likely need something like this in a few months.

Got a bit wet at the pub too - someone decided to throw their red bull in it's glass at me, even got broken glass in my wedges

And guess what, still no $250. I've worked it out though, we need to sit "inside" near the bar, that is where the winner is always sitting

I think we need an independant person to draw the winner; I suspect only locals will ever win this thing..........................

Haha sorry. I only hold a visitors permit to this ride as I am a woos and don't like the rain or cold (ha), but the team meet and leave from the BP station on the southern motorway just past the papakura exit heading south. They usually meet between 6 and 6.30pm. The route and destination is decided at the time as there are often riders of varying skills so to set a standard route is hard. I'm the one that sits in front of the Tail End Caseye cause I'm always the slowest ha
