That's what we are about. Egos should be left at home. There were some very competent riders in last nights ride but you may not of picked them out as we were keeping an eye out for everyone in the ride.
Pity you didn't stay on.
I managed to get my balls out - for the first time this year.:Punk: We all admitted we were a bit rusty on the carpark exercises (where I set up the balls for some counter-steering and braking).
Then on to the pub where we talked heaps of shit as well as some interesting stuff. :woohoo:

it was one of the best organised group rides i've ever had the pleasure of doing...and yes the lil dude was extremely popular with the whole group...i forget how many but between 100 - 200 after hamilclown and no incidents the whole trip...if you're thinking of doing a weekender this is a great one to lose your virginity on...
lil antidote took out the biggest prize of the weekend...a brand new Ferrari...well a ride homme from school in one...
sorry i missed u guys i'll be turning up once dude is back at school and things settle this term at work...looking forward to seeing maakz, sis, tigs, mr gibbo, mr fish et al...
until we see u again please ride safe, have fun and don't hesitate to pop in for a coffee...just txt me to make sure i'm home...flat whites, lattes or long blacks are free for fellow aSASSin's...pm me for number if you don't have it....
and in support of sis...you'll see us early at the helicopter run coming up...rain or shine...

I have been thinking and instead of a ride next week, what say we do Twilight Road and West Road, round and round, focussing just on cornering.
You would get some up hill practise and then some down hill control.
I would recommend buddying up - that is doing it in 2's, one following and then commenting, before switching and being the lead. So bring along a riding buddy if you want.
I am eagerly looking forward to everyone's thoughts....

I like the idea Sis just not the location. Maybe Skyhigh Rd? Twilight is to tight for it I think.
I will try to be there next week if life allows. I have a few ideas for this from things ive been learning at the track.

The idea is that it is a small circuit so that one can get familiar and go round and round.
I think Sky high is too big to go round and round.

I do get that. The problem I see with Twightlight is that its has to many tight turns that you cant see through and you wont be able to see your buddy. I know of 1 crash on that road that was caused by drivers crossing the centreline.
How about Runciman Rd then go up to Bombay, back down Tigadee Top Box road? Bit longer but plenty of vision and lots of places to stop and discuss. We could even use Ararimu, Paparata Roads? Ararimu would be good as again lots of vision.
Things not looking good for me making it sadly. Good few stressers happening next Tuesday.

You are sounding like a woman - can't make up your mind
But it would be good if you could make it.:niceone:
I have done mentoring training course using the lay out I mentioned. The stop is at the Clevedon Hall where there is a good car park (as well as toilets). So you just keep going around the block and coming back to the hall. You get to know the corners quite well.
Some of the corners are tight and blind - good practise. Also so slow that you are going to keep a pair of bikes reasonably close together. You don't have to be holding hands.
Also we know that the major help with cornering is the speed/position that one enters and the buddy will be able to see that.
Also the point with practise is not to go fast but to get everything correct and practise practise practise. Then before you realize it, your speed will have increased and you will be riding safer, without having to think of your lines - it will just happen.
Leaving you to enjoy the ride and keep an eye out for other dangers

Also, I like the Twilight idea as long as we're going up Twilight. I'm not such a fan of Skyhigh as there is a lot of braking coming down thru quite tight corners. I'm not such a fan of West Road compared to Twilight, but overall I like the idea. I think the key with Twilight is to not rush.

Don't think I'll be able to make it tonight, got a domestic situation that needs keeping an eye on...
Rats, and I really wanted to meet up with you and your VTR250 tonight, F2dz!
Weather will be fine, no rain. Clouds are good so there'll be no sun strike while out riding... T'will be a good evening, so enjoy!
Well we're having a mild network meltdown at work today so fingers crossed. I'm sure I'll see you at one of these things soon enough, Tigadee.
Hopefully you will actually get to see my VTR – at this rate maybe I'll only get to one once I get my full and the new bike! Tuesdays really aren't my day of the week it seems..

use google maps for kms and times.
When I go to Wellington, I use Highway 39 from Ngaruawahia to Otorohanga and then onto Highway 4 through Taumaranui and on through National Park, Paraparas Wanganui etc. A scenic route.
I also get to Palmy from these roads too.

You will have rides where it just doesnt seem to come together. Good part is you know how it feels and you work to improve on it. Not try and be Rossi. Night riding is a new skill to be learned.
On a motorbike you get smells that you are not used to, like water burning off your headers which smell like your clutch. Or a car went though a few mins before with a stuffed clutch. Your bike is way to young to have an issue like that.

Don't sweat it... Can be a bit tough on a light little bike with a little tank but you'll get there. Maybe an excuse to look at a bigger LAMs bike? :blip:
Easier when it's still daylight and on familiar routes. We should take the Maraetai route next week...
And some counter-steering exercises in the car park. I suggested to Sis that we could re-introduce the one-handed steering. I realised on Tuesday that it will actually teach a lot about counter-steering (illustrating more vividly the pushing and pulling on handlebar during counter-steering).

metal was in the centre of the lane, you seemed to ride right into it at times, just be careful out there
the large amount of chip seal carried out lately hasnt been swept properly and the council should check and sweep all (esp rural) corners on a regualar basis, maybe the ACC should look at this, as could cause an accident.
I think this should be investigated further

Was good to learn a little about motorbike set-up, seeing as my background is in vehicle dynamics. The terminology was a bit.... off though.
Increasing pre-load doesn't increase the spring rate it increases the baseline force needed to start compressing the spring.... the rate at which it compresses after that does not change with the preload. Fs = Fp + Ks*X is the relevant eqn. So the ride rate isn't changed... and given that the rider weight variation has a much more substantial effect on ride rates on a bike (rider weight ~30-40%) as opposed to a car (where the driver weight is < 10%) the spring rates can easily be wrong and only changing them will fix the issue... changing the preload will not.
The below image shows what I mean.... the slope of the displacement/force is constant once the preload force has been overcome and is not affected by the preload amount. You could dial in a ridiculous amount of preload such that your suspension wouldnt move when you get on the bike, but wouldn't track the road very well as it will have no jounce travel.
http://i.imgur.com/y6gENOB.jpg
Now damping.... hard/soft vs fast/slow. Why do we need damping!?! Well without damping a sprung system (your motorbike) would bounce down the road, because there is no force opposing the motion.... this is an unstable system. Meaning that the wheel is not under control, we add damping so that the oscillation dies so that the wheel will be ready for the next corner/bump.
We characterise the damping by a zeta value.... with 1 meaning that the system will oscillate once, less meaning some overshoot (bounce back as we saw) and higher meaning it'll take a longer time to return to the initial position. I don't know with regards to bikes what zeta values are ideal, but with race cars... somewhere in the order of 0.7 gives fast response times whilst not allowing excessive overshoot.
The image below illustrates the effect of the damping ratio on the response of the a sprung dampened system.

The frequency of the response to input or ride rate is determined by the spring rates, bike geometry (which determines the wheel rates.... which are the things that actually matter) and the damping (your bike has 4 different damping rates btw)
Ok bawked that's all good and well but how do dampers stop a system from osciallating? answer: by opposing motion... and the amount it opposes motion is dependant on only direction and velocity. So if your wheel ain't moving, a damper ain't doing a thing... whilst a spring probably is!
This is getting rather long for my liking so i'll end it there.... I've barely touched the surface and I tried not to get to technical but probably failed. I just want to get the right terminology out there...
* I haven't really looked into motorbike suspension, but I have done suspension design at uni

Was good to learn a little about motorbike set-up, seeing as my background is in vehicle dynamics. The terminology was a bit.... off though.
Increasing pre-load doesn't increase the spring rate it increases the baseline force needed to start compressing the spring
I keep it simple for a brief 15 min basic setup. And use terms most understand. Get to tech on suspension and people turn off.
You will see above Brian had an improvement from 2 bars of preload and half a turn off of rebound. And you would have seen from the static and rider sag settings his springs are way out of range for his weight. But we made the bike ride and handle better by simply turning his adjusters which also makes the bike safer. Ideally I would set his bike up with a .95 fork springs and a 1000lb rear, run 10w oil in the fork with a 125mm air gap.

the large amount of chip seal carried out lately hasnt been swept properly and the council should check and sweep all (esp rural) corners on a regualar basis, maybe the ACC should look at this, as could cause an accident.
I think this should be investigated further

Increasing pre-load doesn't increase the spring rate it increases the baseline force needed to start compressing the spring.... the rate at which it compresses after that does not change with the preload. Fs = Fp + Ks*X is the relevant eqn. So the ride rate isn't changed... and given that the rider weight variation has a much more substantial effect on ride rates on a bike (rider weight ~30-40%) as opposed to a car (where the driver weight is < 10%) the spring rates can easily be wrong and only changing them will fix the issue... changing the preload will not.
My understanding is the increasing preload will likely reduce the spring rate slightly as the spring coils become closer together and less able to resist the compressive force. Most springs lose rate as compressed, unless they are specifically designed with variable coil spacing to give a rising rate. Having said that, the linkage design in motorcycle rear suspension can be used to create the effect of rising rate as the suspension compresses.
Which is not to say that adjusting preload isn't helping to correct the problem :)

Back on track then - I quite enjoyed the longer ride. I'll have to remember to change out my tinted visor for a clear or lighter smoke next time though.
I dunno about others, but having a long ride like that every few weeks is quite a nice change from doing the drills in the carpark, even though I do still enjoy those.
One suggestion for next time, especially if we have new people, is that perhaps we should determine who is learning/needs/wants helps with their riding and have them near the front? As it stands it seems like people just pull out of the Z in any order minus assigning the leader and TEC.
On another note, I've gotta try to tweak my suspension this weekend all being well. My rear shock seems pretty squidgy, ever since I got it actually..

use google maps for kms and times.
When I go to Wellington, I use Highway 39 from Ngaruawahia to Otorohanga and then onto Highway 4 through Taumaranui and on through National Park, Paraparas Wanganui etc. A scenic route.
That's the route we took to Wanganui, too.
SH4 is a lot more 'interesting' to ride or drive than SH1, but don't spend too much time admiring the scenery!

I think we just need to space out the experienced riders (front of course, then middle and tail-end). Middle rider should also be familiar with route taken in case the group gets split up...
We should also talk position/formation(?) and spacing when riding on wide and narrow roads.

Ive had one for a couple of years and am not a fan. They fog instantly and the optics are awful. But thats on my cheap LS2 lid. I hear Shoei has better optics but it will still fog when you need it. I get by with a strip of tape at the top of my visor and another bit at the bottom. Works well.
Good time to bring up an old tip. Polish your visor with pledge before each ride. If you get caught in the rain the water just beads off. And it keeps your visor in top shape.

I'm on my third flip face helmet with integrated sun-visor and I wouldn't even consider a helmet without one. LS2 fogged with no pinlock, but was really noisy, Nolan no fogging, quieter, but still noisy. Shuberth C3 is so quiet in comparison. Way quieter than the Shoei Neotec I test rode. The sun-visor does fog a little, but only when stationary and I just open the main visor. When it's raining, chances are you don't need the sun-visor anyway. It's mainly caused by the excellent wind seal around the neck which stops warm breath from escaping - just the price of having some quiet.
Never had a problem with the optics on any of them, not in comparison with the double vision you get thru any pinlock at night. Still, seeing two sets of all the lights ahead of you is much better than seeing nothing at all thru a foggy visor. So as well as a sun-visor, a pinlock is definitely on my must-have list.
What I have discovered after about a year with the Shuberth (and I'm fastidious about keeping my visors clean) was that you do need to remove the pinlock periodically and clean both sides of both visor and pinlock. Somehow they do get dirty in between and need a little periodic TLC. And if your pinlock itself is in contact with the visor like the Nolan (i.e. doesn't have a little silicone bead around the edge) then definitely take it out and dry it off every time it gets wet. Otherwise the pinlock material sticks and leaves little beads of material on the inside of your visor that WON'T come off and look much like really bad scratches after a while. Ask Sis about that!
Personally I just use water and a tissue to clean my visor, but I believe that Pledge is quite good too. I just prefer not to put anything on my visor where I'm not sure of the ingredients and what effect they might have on the anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings applied by the manufacturer.

It was around $1,300 at the time and I kicked myself afterward that I didn't at least try it - but I certainly wasn't planning to spend those kind of $$. loose gravel - I could keep a roading crew busy for most of the year doing fix ups.
there are so many badly done chip seal jobs lately its not funny.
check out any rural road around, cnr Fitzgeralds RD and Drury Hill road and the end of Waihoehoe Road spring to mind. I could go on and on.
Some of the jobs in Takanini recently had one sweep, a lot of loose metal was thrown onto the verge/grass (its great to mow) and there is still a lot left loose.
Some jobs are just small patches across corners - 1-1.5 metres wide a few metres long, even on roads that were recently just been redone with hot mix.
It is a pet hate of mind how the roading jobs are done (some of the motorway work is very nice now)
Maybe ACC could investigate some of the road conditions and place blame for crashes etc partly on the road shape, condition, lighting etc than just on riders
Most jobs could be fixed with a bobcat with an enclosed broom and bucket to sweep up excess or back onto properties, just a thought.
It makes it more difficult for us learners to get the confidence to ride due to be slippery nature of gravel on our roads.
I know its off topic-but it makes a good talking point for all
back to topic
Thats why I like being part os SASS so we get to see hazards (NZSPOKES makes an EXCELLENT job pointing out hazards as we come upto them :Punk:) I have learnt a lot of what to look for from NZSPOKES in ths regard and thats what SASS is all about i guess

My head didnt fit most of the ones I tried, only Shoei and Schubeth were close, the S2 was perfect but I chose the C3 - learner, ease of getting on and off, integrated sun visor, would recommend visor for any one, its so handly for the SASS rides - sunny then dark during our rides. Didnt fit the pinlock at first, I didnt know anything about what happens when riding - fog, heavy breathing, rain, mist, insects, diesel, etc. Fitted the pin lock  most of problems went away(dont have any problems with double vision with pinlock fitted, maybe after pub visit). if the visor mists up open front visor slightly, C3 does have a constant flow of air around the chin - which takes some getting use to but nice on the hot days. I always leave it with the visor up and the sun visor down, if the sunvisor gets wet just leave it down, it will be ok in a day or two - dont rub it. Use a moist microcloth and place over the main visor and leave overnight to soak off bugs etc.
The schubeth sun visor doesnt have 2 positions like some models, you can place it anywhere and I found that it doesnt come down too close to my nose/face etc.
$ - I know how much my head costs and its nice to be comfortable on these SASS rides

But basically gravel on the roads doesn't matter, just be smoother on the controls.... it's the same as wet roads. We can complain all we want, but it's a common hazard and so you've got to get used to it. If you can ride down a metal road, then a little gravel dusting is nothing.

I totally agree with you on all your points  (yes I need some more gravel training on a road bike-it will be later in the year I hope).
Wet roads - I just went and brought brand new tyres to cope with this as it was something I could do (didnt need new tyres, but winter coming).
But I think you are missing what I am saying. It would be nice if peoples whose driveways becomes the loose gravel on the road side could keep it tidy it would be nice.
AND it would be nice too if the road contractors did their job properly as well, got to wonder who signs the jobs off as completed. just saying it could be better.
see NZSPOKES reply earlier about who to report road conditions to, I think I will take the opportunity to give this a go and see what happens (no money, cant happen, not a priority, its someone elses problem, next budget :innocent: - sorry is am a pessimist). Interesting - I've found the C3 to have a better seal around my chin than any other helmet I've worn. But I have left the extra chin seal in all summer. The fresh air vents do a pretty good job of keeping air flow across the visor. I hate having to clean my sunvisor, and it is really hard to get out, so I only really use it on it's own at low speed. Always use the main visor to keep bugs, water and dust off the sun-visor.

I think the vid they are thinking of is "Twist of the Wrist 2" which is not quite as old. I remember my brother had the original "Twist of the Wrist" book back when we were young whipper-snappers riding our bikes around the countryside far too fast. They are books/vids by Keith Code who is the guru of motorcycle racing training and founder of the California Superbike School. It says on Keith Code's Wikipedia page that Twist of the Wrist was published in 1997, but I know for a fact is was much earlier than that. It was certainly around by 1990/91. It's more of a how to ride fast on the track kind of book. The TotW2 vid has a bit more roady stuff in there, and some general technique, but is still focussed on riding fast - rather than defensively. Still it's an awesome watch.

Gravel is one of the reasons I'm not too keen to spend much time riding on the left hand side of the lane, and certainly why I won't try riding the outside wheel-track up Twilight Road. I think you just need to be vigilant about reading the road up ahead of you, getting used to where loose stones are likely to be, and taking it easy and sticking to one wheel track on newly sealed road where it can be really hard to tell whether the stones are stuck down or not.

Its another tool for new riders. It teaches concepts in a way I have not seen bettered. Age of it does not matter as physics doesnt change. The use of the SR concept is very good also.

Start getting used to needeing to carry gear for cold. If you are getting cold during the ride, stop and get changed into warmer gear. Nobody will mind this.

I'm good to go – I put my liner back in my jacket this morning. Back to feeling like the Michelin man again.

Unfortunately my older girls have netball practice on a Tuesday evening this year. I had to call on all my brownie points to get out the other week. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get there again.

Haha. Well I'm sure if you asked nicely you could get the waitresses to bring you out some nice celery sticks instead of the fries. :P
Didn't find out where you were jetting off to but have a safe flight mate! Will see you in a few weeks.

Almost the same things I found with mine.
I have put the extra chin seal in to reduce noise, air vents good as long as I don't block the exhaust at the back of the neck.
I never use the sun visor on its own, never got it out, never cleaned it, I did read that you could clean somewhere.
Use a damp micro cloth on it overnight seems to sort out the bug problem :2thumbsup
Never really compared helmet weights till Tigerdee compared mine with his
Nice ride and good practise in car park last night, did however get a small surprise at Duders Beach (Umupuia?) when the front wheel lifted off the road after I hit a bump :eek5:
xXGIBBOXx - I will keep an eye out, should have my restricted and a bit more experience by then
NZSPOKES - do you have track days on sunday? Do they have spectators, thinking about riding down and a having a look see - work dependant

You guys must really feel the cold. I only just started wearing a really thin microfleece top under my summer mesh jacket this week. Just to take the edge off in the mornings. But still plenty warm enough for mesh most of the rest of the day IMHO.

I should be there tomorrow all being well. I did our Hunua run again from a few weeks ago yesterday – quite a nice straight along it that I'm gonna make a point of revisiting with a new bike.
A couple sketchy drivers crossing centre lines though which put a bit of a pucker on my seat at times.

Yep, Hunua steerers not drivers are particularily bad at cutting corners, sometimes the whole lane , Franklin drivers are similar :brick: Watch out for quads drive out from driveways without looking. These been some chip seal left all over the place so keep to wheel tracks.

Still planning on being there tonight. First SASS of the year starting in the dark. Eep.
Still playing with the tail. This time its because I want change the way I've mounted it, since its all over my driveway I'm not riding tonight.

Hey Gibbox - yep it was, was out to Cambridge. Can't wait to see the bike Spokey, curious now. Och Eldog, had a van with surfboards round the Kaiaua windies last set of hairpin corners before Kawakawa-but on the wrong side. Unsettling doing the Hunua windies at midnight, for a wop wop stretch a surprising amount of cages using that back road. mmm windies on the Coro loop, beware of boats being towed and in particular the ones that leave their rods upright, one almost clocked me when rounding a corner too fast dislodged the rod holder so it jutted out into my lane, had to lie over the tank and lean further. But puckered then continued on. Some rural car drivers baffle me...speed demons.

I liked the change in the carpark stuff too this time. We gotta do more of those slow races, good times.

assumed from picture and 'bike gunna be a little different' message that it has changed our bad.:spanking:
thought you might have upgraded to CB1000RR, or supercharged the 919 :msn-wink: during the week
did like the eights and the slow race. thinking about adding some lights to the bike :devil2: so you dont have to worry about the dark f2dz:niceone:

And we are always looking for different games to play
A few simple rules though
RESPECT for everyone
