One thing all these record as they speak videos have in common is the rider clearly demonstrates how little distraction it takes to affect your riding. Clearly competent riders are no where near as smooth when speaking and their clear space out front is far more elastic.

www.acem.eu (http://www.acem.eu) and
http://www.acem.eu/index.php/lucky-13/english

the motorcycle industry in europe

a little something that may highlight some safety tips, filling in gaps for people like me and proper trained riders. things like small branches, pine needles can really stretch your traction

its the small things that will catch you out, be vigilant.

this might be too commercial for some, but has some interesting stuff there

cornering it takes so little to stuff it up, especially when a vehicle is right on your tail and wont back off

are you sure BigDog, would have thought INcompetent riders would have stressed voices and they wouldnt be able to see much passed the current situation. but i always remember that these professional trainers have been over these courses hundreds of times before, they can relax a little and yes always be alert to any changes due to road maintenance etc. Correct me if I am wrong.

Been there done training like that, worked for me at Riderskills, which reminds me I have to do some more.

Got my office Xmas party tomorrow so won't be there.

I'll be going riding during the break and probably do a big one between Xmas day and New Years if anyone's keen. I'll post it up here.

Also be heading along to the ART training day on the 11th of Jan. Thinking of doing the Taupo one the weekend after but gotta figure out if I have the funds to do it all, as well as source a trailer to lug my bike down/or find someone to stay with down there.

Mery Xmas all anyway. Have a good ride tomorrow.

I am not saying it's not valid training. I am saying if such a small thing makes such a noticeable difference to the riding of an experienced and competent rider we all need to take care to keep our own level of distractions within manageable levels.

Some people will find the presence of a clock on the dash sufficient to reduce their attention span. Others have handlebars that look like the cockpit of a spaceship.

Talking reduces the available processing power quite dramatically. This is even more dramatic if you have to think about your answers.
E.G. I ride with a BT in my helmet. I answer the phone at least a couple of times a month. But if I have to think about the answers I pull over to talk.
I am sure if you rode with an intercom every day it would be less distracting, but it still is.

I found it quite easy and you got instant feedback. Also when I had my turn you realize how much you are looking at, scanning, checking your motorcycle function and on top of that formulating into comprehend able language. Again I found it easy. Shame we dont have headsets at Sass.

I'm not surprised the rider was nervous and struggling with smoothness with all that feedback overload distracting him.

Some have head sets so they get the automated breathe in breathe out message......

I doubt the boys (us) would get a word in, and yes there is someone who sings

For some it would be a nice option, there should be talkers and listeners, those who dont need it, those who should listen and learn. Each and everyone has different needs and abilities (some arent interested in all the technical stuff they just want to know about their riding)

It could be an informal option but there are so many types it would be currently hopeless - IMO

A bit like getting people to take the roles of Leader and Tec - some are ready, some are not sure, some need some encouragement, others dont want to just yet, some dont want to. It was a really good idea and it needs to be tailored to suit.

As I have been told SASS isnt a formal training ground (I knew this). Its upto individuals to ask questions. So if you have them ask.

Will the singer amongst us please stand up :sweatdrop

It was a great ride and I found the biggest kick for me was watching and listening to you all at the drinking hole. We had gone straight there from the ride.
As soon as the helmets and gear were off, you were each picking out bits of your riding, where you had gone not-so-good and other bits that were fantastic and what a great ride you had had. You were LISTENING to each other and giving advice, support and encouragement.
BLOODY FANTASTIC:wings::wings::wings:

Funny but true with the previous answers.
Focussing on the oncoming car (and whatever it was trying to do in the gutter) would not have helped.

I didn't like his lines. Could have kept out wider before turning in.
Was watching something on YouTube and was about to skip the ad but it involved a motorbike so I watched it. It was an ad from Auckland Transport and it was showing why to stay wide on corners with little flags showing the hazards. But I chuckled with the last hazard. A bit of tree. And the commentary was saying to flick (countersteer) around it. Instead the rider went over it.

nzspokes

Rider was to shallow going into the turn so couldnt see through the corner. Rider did not look through the corner as you can tell by his head movement. Rider did not counter steer just tried to turn.

Interesting point s the camera bike behind him did the same thing.

bawked
28th December 2014, 08:40
His bad lines aside, he just didnt tip the bike over enough.

I've only ever crossed the centreline once in a left hander, and that was in my first week riding. I figure that bikes have an intense amount of grip and you can lean them an insane amount without them slipping, so just tip it over as much as possible and you'll be fine.

f2dz
28th December 2014, 11:08
Hey, at least he got his knee down. I heard that's what counts..!

Just looked like he was going too fast for his ability and not enough counter steering. I would probably take a similar line through a corner like that because of the possibility of people cutting the corner and clipping you, which happens all too often. He has the drivers coming the other way to thank for his not ending up another statistic I think.

too fast into corners
wrong position/speed on most corners entries
moves arse, but not shoulders and head
could have used brakes to reduce speed on corner entry, looks as if he is using the engine braking only

didnt seem to consider other road users, if he was in auckland he would have met one or two cutting the corner :shit:

last corner used brakes and bike stood up

I could be wrong, generally am, I am sure you will let me know

its the type of thing that SASS should ask riders, yeah I know SASS isnt formal training. But it asks questions about how people percieve what happens on the road. They could be doing this stuff too without realising it :niceone:

its these things that I would like to promote along with gear, bike stuff etc.

Instead the rider went over it.
https://at.govt.nz/driving-parking/road-safety/motorcycle-safety/

Maybe it was the Prorider instructor doing the riding? :clap:not following instructions? Maybe needs a bigger stick

Meanwhile all over the AT road network there are other DANGERS such as, holes in middle of road, metal drain covers on corners, deep gravel left by road workers without signs (xXGIGGABOXx do you remember my battle with the gravel at Puni? - I have done some slow gravel work a while back, got some more to do) and of course my favourite WET TAR BLEED, all over AT road coverage network. Noticed the rider took some lines right over the tar bleed, would be awesome in the wet :nono:

and yes they did fix one of my complaints, well sort of, removed a sudden depression in road, created a flat and a smaller depressions and ridges. :killingme

The person in charge at AT re the road maintenance obviously doesnt check the road or just catches the bus/train :banana:

What did this rider do wrong?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uqGwbUKdr0

Anyone notice how he only seems to hang off on left hand bends - but almost never on right hand bends? He also seems to have an unusual habit of dropping quite abruptly into the bends. I find it difficult to be sure given the quality of the video, but it looks like he probably grabbed the brake rather than leaning harder into the bend. I also suspect he was looking where he went rather than where he wanted to go.

+1 on all your points. Notice he doesnt move his upper body, arms, head etc.
He dips into corners at different places on the corner, like he sees the exit and nails it.
Almost could see that he accelerates hard while still leaned over (not really sure)

Agree with you, regarding suddenly seeing the car and then the bike followed his view, but I am not a :Police:

Feel free to come along. Neither Sis nor nzspokes will be there, who are both the people that 'officially' run SASS. I'm just wanting to get out riding whilst still on break.

Open to suggestions on where to go also. If it'll be the four of us I'll still be keen for the usual Maraetai, Sandstone, Regis Lane route. The regulars should be familiar with this route too so we can take turns leading.

Look back for Tigadees post on SASS rides. He gives more info. Unlikely we will do the carpark, just a gentle ride (we dont have split balls)

Nice to meet new like minded riders.

Thanks for the comments Jeeron, they are appreciated, now just need to countersteer, brake before and through the corner and to tip in when required.
Its so nice to move all over the bike and be smooth. Your comments about having to really ride the bike sum it up for me.
When I started I was slow and got frustrated, having ridden a bigger bike since, its way easier. On the smaller bike, much more effort required. :niceone:

Just need to get that control sorted and add about 20 kg more of gear and that shouldsort the bike out for what I had in mind on the longer trips.
I was testing it to see how it behaved under more load. It handled it quite nicely.

Kiwi_on_wheels nice to see the little things being done properly - It took me ages.

Re: stalling, I find the easiest way to do it is . On the clutch lever there are two nuts that hold the cable in place unwind them or wind them till the lever goes tight to pull in . Them unwind it a bit till you can fit a coin in the lever and the perch it sits in . Start the bike and put it in first gear with the clutch all the way in and slowly let the lever out , you will feel the bike pick up the clutch from there you move the nut till when the lever is the right feel for you . Wind the bigger nut down the the perch to lock it in place . Job done . It may take a few goes to get the right feel for you . Me I like it disengaged with the lever on my knuckles and the bite point about 10mms from there . Hope the helps

Follow the cable to the clutch drum and there is a perch the cable goes through with a threaded tube and two nuts at each end is there a room to move the tube in more to give play to the lever ? If not yeah a new cable is in order

Had to laugh to myself at 2 this morning about comments at the Pub:
-All of the bikes I have owned - I brought unridden, untested (bar 1 - Thanks SPOKES for that)
-I found with the Scorpio, I did need to ride it the 200 ks before the die release come off the tyre, and when it did I really noticed it so much more grip. Most likely because the bike is light, I dont ride like a maniac and it doesnt have much HP to scrub the tyres. And yes I had 2 punctures during that same running in time, so I was careful.

- I did wonder about the extra weight I had last night, sometimes the bike tended to side slightly both ways - I did check the tyre pressure before the ride, it was down, and I have just checked again, down slightly which is OK. I am thinking because I ride with the bike vertical almost all the time, even in corners, it might have been just the side edges wearing off - anyone else has any ideas

- xXGIGGABOXx & AWS good comments about the clutch stuff - I will check it out too
- I forgot to readjust the throttle cable yesterday before the ride, so much loose play I couldnt be sure went things were going to happen (Yamaha Manual says 3-5mm loose to avoid problems when turning the handlebars) I prefer much less

- Jeeron "Action Shots" I didnt know the pictures/video you were taking were so good resolution. I am Impressed by what I saw, no not by the rider in front of you.

- I have been wondering about getting a camera which also has a rear camera as well - just thinking about it. Any suggestions.

It was a great night and ride. esp liked the tart <_<

Usually the bar length wouldn't make any difference to the cable pull as it's the difference between the cable inside and the outer sheath that creates the pull. If the whole cable was too short, you wouldn't be able to turn the bars to full lock on the left hand side.

I agree with AWS, unless you have pulled your bars back so far you can see cable between the sheath and the perch. You should find the cable also adjusts at the other end. Sounds like it might not be properly adjusted. There is a simple process for adjusting this but differs from bike to bike. Do you have a manual?

Trying to get things sorted so I can come this weekend. Front tyre is nearing the end of its life so don't want to pay and then turn up on the day and fail scrutineering, combined with waiting on a new chain to arrive from the US I think I may be pushing it to make it this Sunday :brick:

Stripped the fairings and broken brackets off the cbr this arvo, got some new ones on order. To be honest, it got off lightly in the crash. Probably won't make the next couple rides since stuff is coming from overseas, but it'll only be a 10 min job to get it ready when the parts arrive.

Keen for a good ride tuesday, rewired the whole front end of the bike today, found the headlights have 55w h3 halogens in them, so with wiring in a dedicated feed to the relay i've managed to get a MASSIVE increase in light output. Stoked. And to relay the fullbeam light should be a lot easier, just got to get a relay.

Brake light has also been fixed (i think) turns on and off correctly so far, need to take it for a good ride to check it.

Hi, I've been lurking for some time and I'm finally ready to get some 'edumacation' but I'm not sure if SASS is aimed at me.

Background: I was riding a VTR 250 for a couple of years back in 2007 and then I sold it after dropping it and didn't touch a bike until mid last year when I went out and bought a CB1300 (mid life crisis!).

I.e. my sum total riding experience is ~three years (though I commute daily and have done a few long rides around the North Is.)

Apart from having done the basic skills handling to get my learners back in 07 I haven't had any formal training and figure I ought to invest some effort in gaining some good skills. I figure I ought to take advantage of the ACC stuff and I'm considering some other options as well.

So, will SASS be of benefit to someone like me or is it aimed just at beginners?

Also is there a session planned for tomorrow (13/1)?

Apart from having done the basic skills handling to get my learners back in 07 I haven't had any formal training and figure I ought to invest some effort in gaining some good skills. I figure I ought to take advantage of the ACC stuff and I'm considering some other options as well.

So, will SASS be of benefit to someone like me or is it aimed just at beginners?

Also is there a session planned for tomorrow (13/1)?

Come along and see what you think. Everybody can learn. If you feel you need more talk to Phil at Riderskills.

Yes we are riding tomorrow.

Hi, I've been lurking for some time and I'm finally ready to get some 'edumacation' but I'm not sure if SASS is aimed at me.

Between everyone there is a wide range of skills. Some of us are beginning, and some of us have been around a little longer. All sorts of bikes too. I turn up (when my bro isn't in town) to keep my road skills sharp. And there is always something new to learn.
The other main issue I find is that it takes a LOT of practise to over-write the bad habits and everyone under-estimates how much practise is required. Only when it turns to shit and your mind goes into "instinct" mode, do you find out. So by practising , we are training our good habits to become instinctive and not reactive. There is a big time difference there and it could save your life.

Anyway, that's enough of the serious stuff.

You will learn more if it is a heap of fun.

So come along and check it all out.

Ok tomorrow will be a completely new route. Sharry will be along again. I will be leading, who wants to be tec? I think Lance said a while back that he wanted to give it a go. We need to be away right on time, so please be prompt and be ready to ride at 7. This will be a great run to try get the lines right everytime as you will be on roads you dont know.

Rules that we need to tighten up on, main one is the 2 second rule. Lots of us were to close last week. Spread out its not a race. You will be able to watch lines better when more spread out as well. Second is speed on which I have spoken about before. Other motorists will expect us to be able to hold or be within a reasonable margin of the speed limit on the highways. If anybody is struggling with this speak up and we will work on the route to allow for this.

Update on Sharrys bikes. Im getting parts now for the CBR. Just managed to get a fork top yoke that will allow for running normal handlebars. Doesnt hurt that it looks bling. Just need to get some up and back risers for it then some new bars to suit. I need to get time to take the swing arm for welding for bobbin mounts then the frame and swingarm can go for powder coating.

Did some work on her Hyosung which Im going to try to have ready for the next track day. A lot to do between now and then but I think I can. Working on the quick action throttle tonight as she does not have full wrist movement yet. And need to make a gear shift yet....

Two, Hyo 650 which is her old track day bike and the CBR600. CBR will be her long term bike as it will be lighter and easier to ride, Im taking weight out of it where I can. Hyo will probably be to heavy for normal road work as its a bit of a tank. But as its a V Twin has nice low down power so good for her to get going on again at the track.

They are pretty much the same motor as the Hornet 250 which goes very well. 100 is no problem to them.

If you have worked on wiring and tidied up earths etc it will be running better.

yeah it desperately needs a carb balance, poor things been rolled trolled and assholed, think my oilchange the first weekend i had it was the first the poor thing had in years, all the oil was thick black and sludgy, started to notice a bit of clutch slip if i'm too rough on gears too. aahh well, runs mint for a 26 year old bike thats done 62000kms. puts a grin on my face and that's what counts. could very well be in for a strip down and rebuild over winter... maybe. i'd imagine bike mechanics get a bit cheaper in the middle of winter too LOL

Great to hear that you're mostly okay and even better that the bike is better off than expected

+1 Get well and get back on two wheels soon!

If I still had a 250 I'd be wiring in LEDs like I used to have before I got told by the VTNZ to remove em. I remember when I did ride with brighter lights it made an absolute world of difference.

No probs, glad you liked it. I get shit for having that helmet cam during gear check but I definitely think it provides better footage than the usual bike mounted angles.

I'll have to rewatch those clips to see what I was mumbling to myself that was so funny, haha.

I don't think I was very frustrated in those sessions, except for maybe that first one with all the traffic and strange passing. There were a couple runs in the middle of the day that were a lot worse when I got stuck behind the much slower riders. Thanks for the compliments though Rob, definitely felt improved over last time. :)

If coming from H-Town there's two ways I know to get to Pukerewa - take SH22 and go through Waingaro and the other is via Rangiriri-Glen Murray Rd (past the dairy factory on the corner and follow that all the way to the first T intersection and hang a left)...that's gnarly and that's the route I took. Also, once past Nikau Cave Cafe the meander gets tight as you head back into the interior. The last portion was through private land and up the ridgelines on metal road with horrible pot holes in places...literally up to the highest point that gives a panoramic view of the coast and interior Waikato. My tractor wasn't meant to operate as a trail bike much less go where I make it go hehehehe LOL...of course, every single person I asked for directions beforehand said "naw its peasy to get to and all good, just go to Nikau Cave Café and its not far from there..."IN A PIGS EYE it aint far!!!!! LOL i'm so naďve...was definitely fretting about my precious and laying it down. On the upside, I went to the Meremere drags today-great if hot and finally got to go to Puhoi Pub...lots of dickhead boy racers out too, very aggressive and prone to baiting. Stupid "male chickens" ...
