View Full Version : South Auckland Thursday Night Ride

Good call. Caseye probably wrapped up in cotton wool asleep:yes: it's easing off but decisions made. Next week or sat/sun. Already been to downtown Ongarue this week for work.
I resemble that remark!@#$%
Next week it is, no sense going out and dirtying up a perfectly washed, polished and shined motorcycle on a Thursday night for no good reason.
Like we used to do most winter Thursday nights some years back, remember starting in the rain and finishing in it, including the pub/cafe stop before heading home.

No, missed that one. Did avoid the road kill on the way there though
its an area that has the odd deer on the road.....
that's the second time I have ridden that road. Just as memorable as the first, just different.
miss them old times.
its good for me to get out and visit all of these different places/people - a good change from work cheers guys.
Amit - hope you have had time to adjust your headlight.
No worries about hi beam.
just be careful of areas especially on corners/intersections where rain/traffic washes out stones etc onto the road
Twilight Road/Kimpton Road intersection will have metal across the road and the road will start deteriorating over the coming months
just be careful there.

19th May 2016, 17:39
is this rain going to stop?
Keen to go, but held up at work for a few minutes, I can hear the rain outside, maybe its just a shower.
it was very pleasant out this arvo:headbang:
Off home and then we will see.

Ok will give it a go.... Even for a short run, it will be the only run till next week
so did anybody make it for a ride today. delayed at work wanted to come over. well always been used to riding on asphalt , definitely on the chip seals the confidence level goes down as the fear factor kicks in( loosing traction). will need lot of practise to cope up till then probably have to hold you all back

The was someone slower than you there tonite.
understandable about traction but it's relative to how much loose stuff is present - there should be none on good stuff done properly and rolled and swept. Trouble is current method is to use vehicles to do the rolling etc.
practise - go at your own pace. If you feel under pressure, find an area to pull over safely and let them pass.
its definitely getting cooler and the rain is chilly.
Leathel - looks like I will have to save up and get myself some Dragons.

Once more the 'Orrible Lot went for a ride.
There was no storm just a few skiffs of light rain and a few vehicles who were all to keen to overtake and light the way......
Wasn't cold or wet, so the winter gear has passed the test, yet again
More interesting sights at the autobahn and surrounds. Driving skills and what people wear...... Or don't wear:crazy:
May not be there this week, off on a long journey over QB
and yeah Tuakau was almost shut, just a few hardy souls visiting the chemists - and the waterfeatures were non existent.

Nice night for a cool ride.
bark busters - yes
heated grips not required.
just the old tee shirt underneath
yeah the fire was nice.
for some reason felt much more comfortable on the bike.
will have to get a bit more practise riding in before the summer comes.
but opportunity will be intermittent.

Just get out as much as you can, concentrate on cornering well with plenty to spare and then look to get out of them a bit quicker, the rest will follow. T Shirt Pfft, I nearly choked on my Lemon Lime and bitters when you told me thats all you had under the fabric jacket.
Leathal, next time, say na, riding first! and as a mate of mine is wnat to say, "better to be pissed off, than pissed on"

Depending on who shows up might ride passed yr way or not as the casi maybe
I have 3 away tomorrow and probably more won't turn up either
Bike isn't used much lately so was surprised it started lol
- Yep, I got the weather right, drizzle, rain, lots of headlights, slippery roads, the usual suspects and dodgy drivers in Tuakau
a few road repairs using cement (3+) - I can always find road repairs
Caseye, I did have a lower air pressure 30-32 in the front, I checked my log. front - its better but still no good for those cooler nights.
its was a nice pootle...

If you are going around the Kaiaua loop in the dark, beware of the patchy road repairs at the top of the hill just south of Kawakawa. They have been mentioned in here before but as seen last Saturday, have continued to deteriorate and spread even more loose gravel around the general area.

That will be why you didn't answer my call letting you know what I was up to, and the text reply you sent was after I hit the road home so didn't see it come in (well after the ride start time anyway)

Walked down to the Lighthouse in full gear, No Problem, bit of a breeze going, easy as. Walked? stumbled back up taking advantage of the well placed bench seats, had to dis robe out of gear and carry it. Got my daily walk in that afternoon.
Great ride up north, roads were awesome, not much traffic, worst at Wellsford and bloody warkworth. F...ing wankers letting arseholed form Highway 16 into the line in town was main one at Wellsford.
Just cruised up alongside all taffic and got thropuhg in 5 minutes, while cars were taking up to an hour and a half.

Cheeky young WHIPPA SNAPPA is just poking the BORAX at us older less inclined to ride in inclement weather types, me included and probably the main one.
Don't worry about ol Doggy, he rides most Thursday's and his ol Bolly can be heard from a wee way away.
You are of course welcome to come along, we ride a group system where we do have a ride leader and a TEC (Tail End Charlie, usually me).Ya don't pass Ride Leader without a very good reason An if you need to stop or go home you let TEC know.
Otherwise it's pretty standard stuff, you are expected to "ride your own ride" IE: Don't attempt to emulate anyone else, just remember, the objective is, to have a nice quiet ride in the countryside, enjoy the company of other riders at a destination that usually has cold and or hot refreshments and then getting home safely.
the SATNR has been going for quite some time now and is once again becoming well attended, so, as always the more the merrier.
See you tomorrow night at the BP on the Southern Motorway just after the Papakura off ramp heading south for a 7pm ride off, we usually start congregating anywhere from 6 pm onward's.

Twas a good ride. Once again on some roads unfamiliar.
Dodged the rain and had a great time.
Nice break at the port,(way better than Makara beach) could watch the waves crashing for hours.
And food welcome at the stop.:Punk:
The usual drag race at the papakura offramp due to road works, amazed me how desparate several cars were in overtaking me (it was a close thing). Had a big small though when I easily passed them and managed to slow them up all the way down the road. All good.

I look forward to the day those back country servo's get 24 hour card access as that will open up new territory for out of hours rides.....

09/03/2017 Ride report
I have summarised the ride report to the following.
Apologies:
The Couch Potato Gang was unable to attend - no reason given - will need to explain
Leathel et al - unable to attend due to work and/or other commitments - accepted
Minutes: There were a few minutes wasted waiting for the rest of you
Preride talk: Was quite interesting - all about bikes and how different people upgrade their rides.
Ride: Introductory ride for the new member - so not as long as std
RIC - had no idea where the ride was going (I have the same problem following the normal ride)
We dodged the rain and took in some quite nice scenery (not literally) and cloud formations
Plenty of curves and some slippery parts of the road from washouts and pine needles
Note for Munster: Your favourite bit of road has some small amounts of road metal washed across it.
There are long rows of pine needles in the middle of the lanes on a couple of bends (pine trees each side of the road)
There is a hidden washout on the end downhill run (approx. 1m in on the left hand side x 20m long - could be difficult to see in the dark
- but some clever spark has put out a shit load of road cones and made a nice job of it too.
Ride was enjoyed - I actually got to read some of the road signs - normally just a blur
Stopped at the usual for more chin wagging - all bike stuff - I learnt something which was cool
Meeting closed
We agreed to meet again next week
Then as the clouds closed in, we rode back along the return route, covering both lanes it was cool.
Got home and reminded myself, must clean bike, helmet - nah there's always next week - it might rain.
So once again - those who listen to the weather forecast and don't look out the window, you missed an opportunity to ride again. :bleh:

good on you for getting out, If you went passed work at the end of the ride I was likely still there.....shortest day this week was 12 hrs so far with some closer to 15, might get out slightly shorter today.
I figured the roads would be a little littered with shit... but even on a fine day I was busy...getting a job ready for its cert, the certifier arrived today and didn't even look at the car, was happy with what he saw last week, so why not give me the paperwork then and I finish the "make it look pretty" work when I had more time?????

Cool, I expected that you might be busy :Punk:
Work must take priority - it pays the bills - how else can we afford a motorbike?
Been doing a few all weekend jobs for the past month or two. Got some more to do as well.
Now it is starting to pay off.
It just means he has more excuse to come and see you (travel out of office)
We didn't go past you as the RIC - thought maybe next week we would go that way - maybe, if he doesn't get lost first.
Other rider was getting his mbike legs back after quite a few years and its a much bigger bike than he's used to.
We took it easy.

We do indeed get the odd 250 on the ride, We don't ride to break speed records and regroup before intersections if the group gets spread out... Normally take windy back roads often and a 250 should keep up OK (we normally have a TEC if enough people turn up)
