Well, what I thought was going to be an excellent maiden voyage on the midnight special, as above had a cruel twist with sparkles coming off his bike tonight 30 metres from my driveway!! I can only guess he had been out to chase my tag and was on his way round to show me the tag and to look at the Buell, came round the corner into my street gave his bike a handful of throttle, hit loose chip on the side of the road, got into snakeys, bike gripped as it bit into the seal and threw him off, sliding down the road 20-30 metres. Sparkles was falling in and out of lala land trying to sit up etc, etc, he did come round and was with it for a while, but turns out he doesn't remember most of it. he will now, I'm sure vouch for having decent gear, now he has had a slide, because the track pants he had on the bottom half of his body, let me say didn't work!!!
Any way enough as I wanna say onwards and upwards!!
Fri nite ride was great once we got going, took it easy on the new beast as you do, with run in and rider inexperience on a newbie, thanks to all tonight enjoyed company!!
Now to get my mind off Sparkles.

Any signs advising loose chips? If not remind the council of their contractors duty to inform road users of hazards. There has been a bit of resealing out of Dannevirke, and mostly swept and on straight roads, but signs and speed limit signs warn, and with a visor full of bugs I managed to grab the gas and for a second(half)rear slid and was fun.Was showered with small chip from the car in front of me as they thought be fun to hit the gas at end of new seal, luckily I was 10mts behind, passed them then my turn to repay them at next reseal area hehe.

Coming to think of it, it was resealed when the street was done up about a year ago, the loose chip was about a foot wide against the gutter! Bad luck and to much throttle the problem I say. I've ridden in and out twice daily for 365 odd days and no worries:(

Had a work mate fall off his excessively powerfull CT110 when I worked on a MAF research station years ago,he had overalls on,boots(luckilly not his redbands)managed to crash on a race(after another guy had graded it)was pulling out gravel for a while, and he reckoned he was going 30-40km max, luckilly he also had work gloves on,usually hardly ever used them, saved his hands.

Keep the updates on Sparkles coming.
I dunno, perhaps we need to get a bit more structure back into FNR's...
ie:
Head count before we leave so we are all aware of how many riders are on the ride.
Reiterate that at the beginning of each FNR that rider should ride their own pace and not be drawn into riding at an uncomfortable level.
TEC and make sure everyone is aware of the route before we head off and should NOT be concerned if they are riding at a slower pace and worry about holding things up, short social ride, not need to rush.
Any other things? I'm sure there will be plenty of points i've missed.
This year FNR's have gotten off to a pretty soft start what with the weather and all, the number of riders have'nt as yet been what we were seeing last season but i'm picking once summer starts proper we'll see a few more turning up Friday's.
I know being a social ride we don't really want to get all bogged down in rules and such but I don't think a little planning and structure would go a miss.

Sadly I'm with you both on this one, I don't see the need to be a bit hero, cause as we all know there is no such thing as a dead hero.
I have no problem being passed or riding at the back, we'll all get there eventually if we ride to our skill level, but sadly I suppose, It will get to the stage were we'll say certain people should stay away till they get there head around how lethal there things can be if throttle is engaged and not brain.
Rant over and out! I know I'm in the trade, but no need so young:mad:

yeh, tbh i was a bit surprised at the lack of structure on the first fnr i went to (only been to one so far cos ive been a bit busy with vannage since then), in saying that though, it always comes down to every rider should just ride their own ride; perhaps why I got left well behind on the vinegar hill run

thats the whole point! There has been attempts to structure it in the past and its just about ending the week with a social ride. Its all about just doing what you want to wind down from the week.
Perhaps it's time for a mid-week cruisy/learner ride.
others have broken off and made a wed night ride. Tues night ride. Its all good. The fri night rides starting from Ashhurst mobile station will be here for time to come and as always, its an all skill level, no pressure winddown from the week.

FNR is meant to be a cruisy chill out at the end of the week. Everyone taking it easy and riding within their comfort zone. That's great and the two FNR's I've done were mint.
What I'm talking about is something more structured around learners and low experience riders. I went on a few of these in Wellington and once I got over myself I gained a lot from listening and following the advice on offer. Each ride started with a rider brief covering specific rider skills appropriate to the route. There were regular stops where the riders were shuffled so that everyone got to follow the lines of the more experienced lead. It was never fast - not even a bit. There was a huge focus on technique in the approach to corners. Hazard identification was often discussed.
I'm not talking about singling out the noobs. Noobs should still do FNR. Rather I'm suggesting a separate ride where being a noob is expected and where the active focus is on learning rather than chilling out.

Back on the positives. An awesome ride last night. Great company comfortable pace. :2thumbsup Apiti tavern gave us a pretty good deal, juicy scallops. Any newer riders would have found it quick:whistle: but then we usually always have a few slower riders at the rear with a TEC. With the exception of Monamie it was pretty much a Friday night boys ride. Kudos to Flynn for his good work. I like the idea of some weekend or weeknight slow rides, need to promote though.

if you still have a wof I think you are still insured, as rego doesnt affect the safety/risk... factor of riding, just a legal thing. Best to check it with insurance first though!
back to fnr's etc, hopefully ill be able to make it to the next one, may even bring summat a little different! and I'd be a starter for any newbie training days

I was'nt really even referring to your issues mate and I guess structure might be a bit too stronger word but I stand by my post about FNR's, they are'nt rules just more consideration for the situation really considering it is a group ride where we have riders of all experiences.

FNR rides are good,as said catering for all levels, and sometimes following experienced guys /girls helps each one of us,hell on Friday I didn't know I could lean so far, wasn't a fast corner, but standard 65km(usually take them at 80km or so 2 up)this time decided 100km and no problems, basically the saying more miles equals more fun/experience imho anyway. The main problem is shingle or unpredictable happenings.
My first big ride was when the Manawatu crowd did the Palmy-Whanga-Palmy loop a couple of years ago,and being relatively knew to riding again, was passed by all, didn't worry me,as we all caught up at stops for photos etc,and eventually the pub.End of the day just cause someone passes you,you don't need to try to keep up if you feel unsafe for whatever reason, sure is good to watch the lines until they dissapear.

Sounds like a good idea. I was thinking about setting up a learner ride next weekend. weather dependant. You want to team up? A more frequent ride during the week could be a good idea.
To ride as good as you cowboyz, do we all need to have a green bike? I have a spare $500 so might be able to pick one up the same.
Will you teach me?:2thumbsup

I don't think its necessarily being passed and trying to keep up. Over confidence is more insideous than that.
As you become confident you take corners a little faster, lean a little further and because it works you get suckered into believing you're better than you are. Trouble is that while your experience of riding "when its working" grows quickly, the experience needed to deal with the unexpected omes much slower.
I learnt a painful lesson on the VTR when everything seemed to be working mint, confidence was brimming over. All it took was a simple distraction (imagined as it turned out) at a critical moment and then by the time I looked back I didn't have the experience to deal with what I saw. I failed to take the corner because I froze, panic braked and failed to corner at all.
It makes complete sense to me now. I wish I'd had that insight before I'd set out that day :(

I remember that ride Tony, that was my longest ride not long after I got the Monster. I remember the Tar being melted that bad I was sliping and sliding all over the show. Very hto day that was, had to drop my pants to the ankles to allow air flow to the important parts whilst downing a bbq sausage or two. great day that was.

The thought did cross my mind. That way the Mrs could have a learner bike to gain valuable knowledge and skills on. Being green and 900cc is perfect for the learner. Can't have them learning on something to powerful now can we.
The other option was a honda but they come in gay colours like "two tone sapphire":buggerd:

Must do it again, thinking go reverse way and stay at pub or Tahora, that way after a few beers it's a relatively easy ride home if hungover.

Mind you kwakas are really well trained, they don't kick the walls or partitions in floats unlike other goods transported that way.Mind you 140000km speaks volumes, most others will be dead by then.

justto be clear, all piss taking aside! Yes I am confident on my bike, but there are plenty of manawatu riders who will leave me in their wake any given chance. Ive seen Dogs, 86, Sarge etc disappear into the distance. It all comes down to the realisation that you are enjoying what your doing because your doing it your way. Not someone elses!

Ive been going out on a Tuesday night with a couple of riders who are helping me with my new bike to gain expereince and learn a few things and we are looking at doing that on a regular basis. Will post up if we are doing it on Tuesday

Pleased to hear your ok sparkles. I think youll be the first to admit youve had a couple of unneccesary offs lately. Nobody means to fall off, it happens to the best of us but it is very important to learn by the mistakes made and not do the same again. A wise man once said "only a fool makes the same mistake twice".
The friday night rides are generaly non structured, which is a good way to have it IMO
However i think a little more informative would be good, especialy for newcomers
These are my suggestions
Keep everyone informed of where the ride is going and where we are stopping for refreshments
If you organise the ride before friday night. Post it and the details (no excuse for anyone not knowing then)
If the ride is organised on the night, whoever suggests the route needs to make an informative speech, detailing the route and refreshment stop before the ride leaves
If someone wants to go TEC then they need to inform the group before it leaves
Hopefully if we all are informed there will be no need for those who dont know where we are going to be compelled to try keep up when they are not capable
Lets keep it simple, enjoyable and safe

Back on the positives. An awesome ride last night. Great company comfortable pace. :2thumbsup Apiti tavern gave us a pretty good deal, juicy scallops. Any newer riders would have found it quick:whistle: but then we usually always have a few slower riders at the rear with a TEC. With the exception of Monamie it was pretty much a Friday night boys ride. Kudos to Flynn for his good work. I like the idea of some weekend or weeknight slow rides, need to promote though.
Someone had to keep you guys honest!
Pleased you are ok Sparkles-take it easy boy!
Yep to Sarge and Meanie-FNR is for all levels and a good wind down from the week-basic group ride rules should be applied. (Respect your fellow riders, ride your own ride, know where you are going and have a TEC so no one is left behind to get lost.....the rest is up to the individual).

looking forward to a ride if the weather is fine enough.
Got the new gear so will fill the tank, dust off the boots and clean the visor and show up at asshurts mobil 6pm friday night to follow the leader. If there is no leader I will call in on Meanie and Monie for cake and coffee. Adn if they not there then I will call in on Cowboyz for coffee.
Now if all that fails me then i will head home and drink my own bloody coffee. Either way I will be there tomorrow night......
Have to try out this new gear you know lol..
