Good turn out and ride tonight. Bobby is getting the hang of Norman. Well done girl. Lees considering a few mods for the RF and Helens V-Max is the bomb.

yep. Nice pootle. Mrs C is doing better and better as the ks go by. Little disappointed you didnt use the time on the 14 wisely (or unwisely considering how big sarge is) for wheelie practise.

Well went to work this morning feeling all giddy about tonight, kept clock watching and I
am sure I saw it go backwards a couple of times!
Finally it got to four and I was off to the dreaded (wil not mention the name) motorbike shop to buy some
decent fitting goves thanks to the advice of Monie. They worked a treat!
Raced home to get ready and decorate Norman with his newly made keyring, six oclock yay we can finally go.
Sarahtvet turned up right on tme and we were off to mobil where there were alot, and I mean ALOT of bikes already
there waiting. After alot of talking and more talking we were off! I was determined to stay at the back cause I wasnt too
keen on holding anyone up and my wonderful husband pootled in front so I could keep an eye on his lines and sarah very bravely
sat behind me to ward off any cages. Thanks sarah felt very safe with you behind me.
We got to colyton turn off and I was feeling quite comfortable, there were a few bikes waiting there so I came to a stop put
my left foot down and got nothing but air! Norman decided he didnt want to stay so rolled off to the left and I didnt want him
to leave me behind so I fell ( quite slowly I think!) and took him down with me. It was a nice soft landing, though my leg doesnt
agree!! I hit the ground and just started laughing, Meanie and Sarge came to pick up Norman and I couldnt stop laughing, I was thinking
how funny that must have looked! Did a quick check on Norman and the clutch seemed a little tight so Lance took him for a quick spin down the road
to check everything was alright. All good so off we went to meet the rest of the crowd in colyton.
You would think that having a kickstart would make you learn to not stall pretty quickly, but not me from then on I just kept stalling
almost everytime I came to a stop!! Aaargh I was geting a little frustrated after the third time! i think manwithav8 thought I was swearing at him!
Anyway met up with the rest of the crowd again at the top of mount biggs and asked Lance how far are we from feilding, he said five km so I said lets go
I am hanging out for a smoke and a cold one by then! This time we took off in front and it was awesome just being in amongst the group. Finaly got to
feilding and just couldnt help myself but to stall one more time!!
Well after a few laughs and a catch-up on how the ride went we had to leave to go pick up the kids. Lance went off for gas and me sarah and lee
waited on the side of the road for him. Once we got out of feilding and through bunnythorpe I decided to pin the throttle and got Norman up to 120
woohoo!!!
What a great ride!!
As Meanie says, I have the bug! Looking forward to the next one!!!

Way to go Mrs C,we all drop the bike once,as for stalling with electric start no one notices you have stalled but with kick start is difficult to hide what you're doing.
Be good to see you with full license and Mr C on the back(will be his excuse to let ya ride as sober rider?).
Much like the mastercard adds once you have full license-New helmet $200,new tyres $550set,taking the ZX9 when Lance not home-Priceless.:woohoo:

Well done Mrs C, you rode like a champion, and you have an excuse for your little tumble, where as I don't. Beginners go through those issues which is now making me think am I still a beginner lol.
Now you have the bug and it will only become more fun as you ride for longer and faster ( within the limits of course).
Was a good ride last night, I'm a little gutted about the tumble but as stated over a cold beer, "rather it happen like that than out on the open road"
The RF isn't looking too bad at all, a clean and a polish will help the cosmetics and a new indicator lens will see it safe for the road again.
The fairings will come off sometime soon for a little sand and a temporary paint touch up. Brand new paint job and exhaust when I get back from overseas I reckon.
And thanks to who ever helped lift that heavy sucker back onto it's wheels, didn't see who you were cos I was too busy hiding my head in shame...
But I stil have a great night..

Pleased to see you behave yourself Lance and good on you for encouraging Bobbie with her riding, now you better say goodbye to the savings as you prepare to fund two bikes on the road. It gets bloody expensive, but worth it

At the pub in Feilding.. Went to stop in the car park and grabbed front brake on the gravel, down she went, I think if I was on tarseal I could have caught it but my foot went on the gravel aswell so was easier to let it all go and try to pick it up afterwards

Well my South Island trip is officially underway, even though it's about two weeks till I'm on holiday, as I've now booked, paid and printed my E-Ticket for the Bluebridge. I will be leaving on the 31st on the 8am departure and choose this day as I hope a Sat will have less traffic on the road to Welly.
I'm pretty much planning this trip as a solo adventure but don't mind if anyone wants to tag along parts of the way if anyone plans of heading south on the same day. It would be good to have someone show how to properly tie down a bike so I don't make an arse of myself
But anyhow got tickets so hopefuly next week my givi screen wil arrive at City Honda and will find someone to get it painted red to match the bike so all I need are small things like tie-downs and puncture repair kit.
Accommodation shouldn't be a problem as I have secured use of a crib(Scottish for Batch) in Arrowtown as well as a mate of my old man who is a fellow Hornet rider in Dunedin who said I can crash over at his place. Will look at Hostels amd cabins at holiday parks for rest of accommodation.

east coast from chch to picton is pretty cool, once you get north of cheviot
try and do all the roads that cross the island, i.e. westport to murchison, greymouth to springs junction, kumara to chch and through haast pass....awesome
you can get some reasonably priced tie downs from super cheap or repco, good for 450kg each...if they can handle a concours/blackbird, they can handle a hornet

Look like good routes. I got a map of the South Island, that also shows Mobil stations as well, so I've got a rough idea of the route and senic routes I might take. In all I have about 11 days to play around with.

Ditto on all the routes.
Also, I have a strap (made by Oxford) that goes over each handlebar and allows you to hook the tie-downs to. It helps to keep the tie-downs away from the bike - I've even slipped some old push-bike tube rubber over the webbing to minimise any rubbing. Leave bike in gear and spread tie-downs as far apart from the bike as possible.
Don't let anyone parked next to you wander off and not strap their bike down. I had this happen and as there were only crappy pieces of string available, I tied one big loop over the guys seat - too bad if it damaged his bike, I wasn't gonna come back to it leaning on mine!
Have fun!

Great to see you out
I was tempted to bring SK1PY but need to get reg sorted and the blue beast is going better and better so very hard to leave him at home

!!!
A miracle I know but for such an auspicious occasion I managed it (with some sneaky acceleration on the way:lol:)
Thanks sarah felt very safe with you behind me.
Shows you were snifffing your gloves too much then honey
Truly a pleasure you were bloody awesome and acquitted yourself fantastically.
Norman decided he didnt want to stay so rolled off to the left and I didnt want him
to leave me behind so I fell ( quite slowly I think!) and took him down with me. .
It's a honda thing I think, SK1PY has history for it, likes a little snooze on the grass occasionally
I hit the ground and just started laughing, Meanie and Sarge came to pick up Norman and I couldnt stop laughing, .
It was good to see the three men running to help, what gallantry, well done to them !!
You would think that having a kickstart would make you learn to not stall pretty quickly, but not me from then on I just kept stalling almost everytime I came to a stop!! .
Don't be silly why would you want to do that. Kickstarts are such fun exercise. Anyway good for the boys to wait, it teaches them patience :innocent:
Once we got out of feilding and through bunnythorpe I decided to pin the throttle and got Norman up to 120
woohoo!!!.
You certainly caught me by surprise and the blue beast was growling for the chase after you :ride:
What a great ride!!

Welli way, Rimutakas maybe tomorrow if weather improves:ride: You can drool over the blue beast
Sorry I missed this earlier you could have come to Opunake to the Triumph mechanic of all times. Great ride and he took me pillion. Blue beast was unstoppable and when we got back, me with the fixed cheesy grin, he had expected me to be paying attention to lines and rpm. Riders who don't pillion have no appreciation of how exhilarating a good pillion experience is. Guess I shall have to pay attention next time!!!!

Barefooting! Of course you'll need a suitable boat, probably 150hp plus outboard and a driver, but you can do it all year around!
Oh, there is a down side I should mention. You need a high pain threshold and you end up with a fat neck!

Eating dust? Nah, not unless there's a bike swap!
I took her out Rongatea, Glen Oroua way as she wants uninhabited straight roads at the moment. She's doing really well and stalling seems to be a thing of the past. However I thought I should come home for a nana nap as the lack of speed was making me sleepy! I think I managed a 100kph for a moment or two.:zzzz:
Going to head out again later for another session!

Good on ya Al .. I remember those first nervous rides .. was lucky 86 came with my first forays out on the road, then Dogs & U4ea joined in as well, certainly gives one confidence to be with experienced riders .. actually still remember my first nervous solo effort as well.. now I never give it a thought ;)

21K is a lot of moola to lay down for a bike alright :pinch: Even if it is a new Sprint. That's what the Tiger cost with panniers, but I've justified it to myself now tho, wasn't too difficult in the end

Too much moola for me at this stage.. More important things on the way that are going to cost enough as it is without financing a new bike aswell..
I am more than happy with the RF, even it's new cosmetic character lol... A few little mods and it will be a beast...

first friday night ride - good fun riding in a big group and stopping for a beer. thanks for introducing me to a few people sarah. i buggered off back over the track.. must remember: clear visor next time!!
had to ride the track with visor up and went through a bloody massive insect swarm and ended up with about 5 billion insects stuck to my face and glasses. about the only time that i've been glad to wear glasses.
Nice to meet you last night, like your bike too even though its not a kwaka
Awesome ride and great company yet again thank you all. Love those roads out the back of Pahiatua, and what an awesome night for it

True. I did see a 1Tonne stall at a Manfield track day and they had similier gear that had all the bells and whistles. I would love to have one but are they as strong as your normal helmet?

i think it is time to address some issues that have appeared with the popularity of the friday night rides and remember why the friday night ride was started in the first place. There has always been pacey riders on the friday night rides as well as plenty of newbies and alot in between.
Like always speed is not a prblem on its own but it it seems some are forgetting the spirit of the ride and not being as considerate around other riders as they could be.
The friday night cruisy ride was created to end the week with a social get together and would be good to not lose the purpose of the ride. Its a great way to end the week.

The rumors are true. I spoke to her on Tuesday
Helen is in hospital and is having an operation to repair her hip on friday
She apparently hit some loose metal going into a corner somewhere out the back of pahiatua and ended up in a ditch. It was on the radio news on Monday morning, i think they mentioned her getting air lifed out.
Not sure about the bike i have heard rumors about it being a write off but Helen seemed to think it wasnt too bad.

Been thinking about this for a couple of days now and think we need to keep things in check to keep everyone safe.
One thing i would like to see happen is the second from the lead stops at the turn off... All turn offs, so no one gets lost, especialy with so many showing up to do these rides.
And we need a dedicated tail end charlie that stays at the back the whole ride so the point person recognises the last person and can join the ride instaed of waiting for phantom riders. Above all i think we need to ride safe and promote safe riding and leave our egos at home

The problem with second in line stopping is at the start of the ride the faster riders get out in front, where they should be keeping out of the way. If one stops to give directions that puts a fast rider at the back of the field. They then have to decide to ride at a pace they might not be comfortable riding or pass everyone. Problem.
The friday night rides are short enough and the routes are seldom complicated. Maybe we can put a bit more emphasis on where we are actually going. If a little attention is paid to ride speech then it shouldnt be hard to not get lost.(bearing in mind one has to know their left from their right).
From what I can see there are 2 problems.
1. riders are getting too disorgainised at stops and fast riders are heading away too late. If you are late on the bike then it goes that your ride is going to be slower than if you are right out front. Sure you can pass your way through the slower riders but are just going to have to concede that it is going to take a long time to get to the front. One thing I would like to see stopped all together is multipule bike passing manovouers. Especially at high speed.
2. Riders getting red mist and *having* to be at the front. The whole spirit of the fri night ride was to be a cruisy ride.

agreed, i don't have a problem being passed as long as i'm not getting my wing mirror shaved and it isn't on top of a corner
i don't have a problem with multiple bikes passing but if you're not the front bike you need to be DAMN sure there's enough room for it to be completed safely
You had enough pies.
I'LL decide when I've had enough pies, thank you very much.
In saying that personnally I don't think many of us (those slow to moderate riders like myself) that do the ride mind being passed, if it's done in a safe manner.
exactly, there's a time and place, etc....
I'm not particularly interested in putting 'rules' out there as I'm sure most people aren't interested in being told where, when and how they should or shouldn't ride, especially when there's an open invitation for anyone and everyone to come along and we are all adults. I'd rather people took it on themselves to consider the consequences of decisions they make when they ride.
I have a perfect example from our trip down south; Meanie and I were heading up the hill out of Nelson on the last day. This is a sizeable hill and the section we were on was essentially nonstop twisties, mostly 35km and 45km corners with the odd short straight in between.
There was a reasonable amount of traffic. Meanie and I were passing where we could. After passing a few cars I came upon a Commodore who was stuck in a line of cars from arsehole to breakfast so was therefore going nowhere fast. As I nipped past between corners he decided that he was prepared to risk my life by accelerating in a childish attempt to prevent me from getting by.
This is what I'm talking about: think about it first, it doesn't take long, if it's a little bit risky then just don't bother. It just isn't worth it.

Put on this thread clear instructions and maybe a map with route shown for anything a little complicated
Then its up to the individual to ensure they know where to go

Yes, I don't think that things should get too organised, it just creates confusion. One good ride speech at the beginning by whoever's idea that night's ride it is should be sufficient. Then it's up to the individual to know where they're going. I don't think any one has ever got lost yet have they?
Went to see Helen tonight. She's OK and said I could quote her. A dislocated hip which had just redislocated itself and a few bruises. She reckons she'll be walking with a limp in 3 weeks and back to relative normality in a few months.
She did indeed hit gravel which had apparantly bounced off the back of a road works truck. That really pisses me off as these clowns of 'roading' contracters just don't seem to give a shit about bikes. Whatever happened to sweeping and rolling down the loose stuff, as happened in the old days! She may be able to take it up with whoever is responsible for resurfacing the roads over there.
The bike apparantly has about 8K damage.

well mostly adults anyhow. Agreed, making rules and plans and the such takes away a bit from the ride. The Ashhurst rides have always been a bit haphazzard and no one really gets lost - much. Thats the charm. There is enough police around without making too many rules to stick by.

I am leaning towards the idea that come up several months ago and changing the ride to the friday night smart peoples ride. If you arent smart enough to listen and follow a few basic instructions then your probably not smart enough to be on the ride.
The original point was about considering others riding around you and if one of you consider a move safe and the other consider it dodgey then its dodgey.

Best thing about the rides is the fun element,I don't mind being passed, but it can be tricky if the bike flies passed out of nowhere,i.e you check the mirrors, noone behind into a corner then a bike goes passed just after the corner, especially on the twisty roads.Had the odd time thinking thank god I never veered wider.TEC seems to be self organised anyway as most intersections are patrolled so to speak.
Maybe if the faster guys left first which doesn't always happen due to drink or smoke needing finishing, and the group leaves.
As a newer rider I like sitting behind say Al,Sarge,Bones,Jonno,James to try and catch the lines they use,if I feel uncomfortable I will back off, usually I have to think of the passenger(letting her out of kitchen),and the fact these bloody brilliant roads are new to me,not ridden hundreds of times.

I agree we dont want to have to make lots of rules, but everyone needs to realise that we have a huge range of riders from experienced to very new, and some of us on new bikes who are still getting the hang of them.

i hear she went for a third ... but you would not let her pass..
It would be nice too if the riders that have stopped to give directions take note when riders do come into veiw and direct ;). It's not hard. i think i may have done this i am to busy talking...
Knowing were the watering hole is would take high priority I should imagine.
i agree again ...
no bringing your packhorse along, that's cheating! and as for you shut up i am not a pack horse .. you can talk bring a car for the ride...lol i forgot it was to carry your make up

Obvoiusly time for them to pull their heads in and realise it is a group ride. With no prizes for being first.
And leave the radar detectors at home maybe?........ The last time I went it felt like a race till we got lost and it settled down no end. Got to see the v-max and have a yak, shingle off the the back of a truck means a loss of load to me being a truck driver which is an offence and causing an accident from it is exactly why its an offence, I'd write them a letter asking for damages or tell the insurance company there details after talking to mr plod....

Having a radar detector doesnt make me ride any faster :oi-grr:
I like to travel around 120 kph on the main roads where its safe too but unfortunatly thatll cost me a reasonable size ticket, hence the detector. It has saved me a few dollars over the short time i have had it

Couldn't agree more. Apparantly there were pics taken at the accident site, but none of the gravel! These roading authorities need to be made aware just how dangerous their slack practises are to bikes.

As a newer rider I like sitting behind say Al,Sarge,Bones,Jonno,James to try and catch the lines they use,Lines? What lines? Surely they're acute or optuse with the odd reflex angle in my case?

I am more than happy to be TEC some nights, as happy to cruise along.
I agree we dont want to have to make lots of rules, but everyone needs to realise that we have a huge range of riders from experienced to very new, and some of us on new bikes who are still getting the hang of them.
Maybe we do need to have a speech at the beginning of each ride since we seem to be attracting lots of new riders to the Friday nights.
Yep, a short and clear riders brief would be the way to go now we're getting the numbers :niceone:
WTF is a TEC. From MADAR. Good call on the clearer briefing. There is a often a degree of confusion. Experienced / faster / smoother riders can be a bit intimidating on a ride when overtaking and I've probably been just as bad. Now I snooze - sorry cruise.
And leave the radar detectors at home maybe?........ The last time I went it felt like a race till we got lost and it settled down no end. Been there with the race track thing - What's with lost ? - GPS gurus on hand.
A real concern with Hanshi and the roads situation. :argh:Roading teams have been held liable before. I encountered those Pahiatua roads when they were sealing them (Caravaning) and wanted to post / warn but had no internet. :Oops:I was hoping no one was riding that way for a while. Is there a roadworks log that can be accessed or approach Higgies etc. for pre warning?
Does Hanshi need help with the kennels? One man band?

You are way to bloody modest mate, shit even on a 20yr bike you make it work well,a joy to follow and learn off. Then you go whoosh and vanish lol.
And as for truckies losing loads when we had a glass claim the insurance company asked us if it was xyz company, yep we said to them, insurance company had spoken to cops and the trucking company were sent costs to fix on behalf of them (insurance co),at least 3 or 4 claims from one insurance company.

As usual the big get together at Ashhurst.........Bonez did the pre talk and I agreed to lead...coool and away we went noticed cowboyz doing 20 in the 50 zone it was plan he so didnt want to be 2nd at the 1st intersection thanks Sarge for stepping up....once onto pohangina valley east road it was time to play in the bends had a good flow going..and tooted as went past Halina...she says thanks too all those who tooted and its envious as hell now.....:baby:
Not too much crap on the road as the locals would have it but if your a country road Virgin more than you would like...while all this was happening the 9 had vanished from the mirrors so that saying things appear closer than they are hmmmmm gotta think about that now!!!!:Pokey:
still going and stopped at highland park intersection sarge and cowboyz came into site so carry on no time for smoke breaks tonite and once at pilgrims rest time to slow down as it was a straight yip more bends at the end bikes insight........10ks up the road 86 came into sight cripes mate you took your time
down through the hills to umutoi waiting for 86 oh here he comes time to go 14ks to Apiti YAY!!!!! this is going to be a Ashhurst record 60ks with out a bloody smoke break :2thumbsup all parked up in apiti I whipped round to see if Mark was home caught him unawears and said come down the pub...as it turn out he had been watching criket and had falling asleep guess cricket would do that:zzzz:

Yeah, was looking forward to following the 14 through the twisties but unfortuntely with Sarge being relegated to the back I had to put up with a triumph instead.

Chased you for 10 or so ks before giving up. As those 45s kick in and the trees close in I just cant convince myself to commit to those corners at that pace. Still had a magic ride out though.

86 and gsvr caught me just before highlands. Sarge was still playing catch up. Let both past as didnt want to hold them up. Played follow the leader till first sight I caught of you was Umatoi. Good run through to apiti though.

Wasnt happy with the sand on the road going up the hill just before the turn off to Kimbolton with no warning signs at all. Thankfully we got the heads up in Apiti Think i,m gonna make a phone call on Monday to complain
