Looky looky, weather forecast for tomorrow has improved considerably (metservice and metvuw) although it might be a bit breezy perhaps.

Yep, it's about time to put on the thinking cap and organise a decent ride. Easter may be a good time, and maybe something before that too........Very keen on the Waioeka gorge again. That may have to be an overnighter tho, that way we could squeeze in the east cape while we're there...........
TT2000 next week end, still not too late to come

Well after much procrastination I got on the bike and took a run through to Hastings, went via the Matamau bypass and Middle road via Racecourse road in Waipawa, that was a mint ride as I think finally the sweet spot has been hit in the suspension set up, just one more thing i'd like to try. Thanks to 2wheeled Gasman for sharing the wealth and furnishing me with a copy of Twist of the throttle 1 and Twist of the throttle 2. Cruisey ride home down the main drag. Only a couple of light spits of rain on the visor, FMS!

2 days 555km and 661 km
the map not real good at showing when overlaying 2 days on top of each other but it basically ashhurst to hicks bay then round anti clockwise to opotiki and through to gissy and then back sh2 home

It's a great ride-we did it not long ago and stayed at a camp ground on the beach just out of Hicks bay-they had a `hot chip` van there and the shop had `Hot chooks`(not chicks), so just lovely after a long ride...no cooking....no dishes!!!

If you're heading up along Stratford-Opunake Rd keep a lookout for damp corners, even in afternoon they can be slippery, stay on that road till Stratford, new coffee place by turn off to Whanga on roundabout is ok apparently, diagonally accross from Shell servo.

Well I stupidly thought I could get a bit of a ride in today. Had a bit of a near miss. You need to look more carefully for Grey cars in this grey weather don't you.
Bonnie got me through though, and all is well that ended well. Just found out how much further I can lean my bike than I thought I could, & accelerated at the same time. Another lesson learned, I hope.
By the way it is friggin cold out there.

I like reading ride reports, not writing them, so I'll keep this brief.
I met NZSarge at BP Rangitikei and hit the road at about 9.30am. We had a coffee/bite to eat at Stratford and waited for 86GSXR to arrive from Opunake.
That sorted, 86 led us down the Forgotten Highway to Whangamomona. A magic bit of road, though wet and a little greasy in places, so caution taken. Lunch at the famous Whangamomona pub (Whanga burgers all around), a chat with the publican and we were on our way again.
We stopped for pics and to remove sunnies before entering the tunnel, which was actually longer than expected. A word of caution: Don't fiddle with things, fidget etc, while riding through the dark tunnel. I managed to hit the "kill switch" throwing everything into darkness. The end result after some fumbling, was everything lit up like a Christmas tree and the headlights pointing closer to the tunnel ceiling, rather than the road:shit: Hardly the place or technique to practise wheelies:nono:
Next up was the gravel section, which was hard packed and easily handled, so not much to say about that except maybe................meh:mellow:
The rest of the FH was pretty mint and we arrived at Taumarunui for a break and more shit talk. On the road again to Raetihi for gas and then the Parapara's. I love that road and 86 set a nice pace through there, all the way to Wangavegas...............and beyond:niceone:
NZSarge took the lead through Halcombe:bye: and we pretty much parted company at that stage with 86 & Sarge heading home via Ashhurst and me heading to Palmy. Awesome day riding, but shit I was glad to get home:cold:........................:zzzz:
Cheers guys, the FH rocks!:D

Nice dude, was a mint day, had my doubts just quietly when we were heading west, thanks for putting up with all my phaffing around with wet weather gear that was'nt really needed in the end. By the way, I can recommend the over jacket as a good addition to a leather jacket, kept me reasonably warm on the way home particularly considering I left Cowboyz place at 11:30 and the further east I got the colder it was.

Plenty of riding - averaged over 500km a day. But it was good to stop and get the pics - even in the pouring rain!

tbh. I was a little put off by the colour in the photos but it real life it was fucking mint. Anyhow.. still on the 9 for a while yet.. I really think its got alot left in it.. I never really got a completely clean lap I was happy with. if I did turn 1 mint I would make a mistake on turn 4. Get turn 4 good and make a mistake on T7. I reckon the bike is capable of 1.16s in the right hands. Just got to learn how to get it on its side without destroying my boots!
Oh... and loving this pic from Cindy! The red duc is ridden by RobertyDogs mate (sorry cant remember his name. He was quick too and the titianium knee sliders were awesome!

Unfortunately the local dealer here doesn't trade jap bikes,so the bloody one I wanted was sold, also the trade in was pathetic due to them not selling jappas, but they did have a TL1000 and Hyosung is close to a jappa.

Yeah I reckon I had about a thousand K's left in my rear but I biffed it anyway, would rather cut my loses and get new one put on, AFC have some sharp prices on PR2's for your bike at the moment, particularly 190/50 rear's.

compression? right amount of fuel? big enough spark at the right time? if its been stored for ages its probly one of the first two, if you aint got a compression tester just clean the carb and see if it makes a difference.

probably 5 yrs or so,
seriously. I used to own it.. It was my play bike back in the 90s. I gave it to my brother in law when I brought the XRs.
It was always a pig of a thing but when it goes it goes REAL good. just got to argue with it for a while. My brother in law used it a couple of times down the beach and then threw it under his house. It fell over and was sitting in the damp and upsdie down for years. so just needs a bit of a clean up and then it should live again. The oil in it. (all about 200mls of it) was like glue when I took it out. everything will just need stripping down and cleaning and putting back together again. I was hopeful to get it firing though before I do much else.
bogan
19th April 2010, 12:58
I'd start with the carbs, 5 years will have caused the fuel to harden into a laquer like substances, which lines the jets and changes their size. You may get away with leaving the engine in one piece and just give the old oil a bit of a flush out soonish if it runs.
cowboyz
19th April 2010, 15:13
this bike is so much fun to ride every time it gets taken out it gets ridden till it runs out of fuel!
just had carbs apart. Jeppers! need some bits and pieces so putting it on hold for today. when did manufacturers decover nuts and bolts and start putting bikes together with those rather than number 8 wire?

Any shop that sells that sort of thing...it's just a little handycam that records to SD card. Mounting is the tricky bit sometimes...
Kiri
19th April 2010, 18:19
did you make a mount for it?
banditrider
19th April 2010, 18:37
I've got ramsolutions (http://www.ramsolutions.co.nz/)stuff. But the little mount that screwed into the camera broke while trying to turn the camera on one day. I was very lucky to catch the camera and manage to hang onto it as I stopped. I've since bodged a new mount out of bits and pieces and it's doing the job nicely.
Don't now how you'll go on a twin though - I've bought another little camera which I've tried mounting to my VTR. Haven't had much luck - nothing but shaky images so far. Using the other camera on the VTR is not an option.
Pinned to my jacket...

Should be a good day out for a good cause, plus the opportunity to get in the track, Mangamarie, and the Taka's on the way down.
Tentatively say 8 am departure from Ashhurst?

Glen our vidoegrapher on the Drift Team designs and fabricates all his own mounts and dollys for the car and the bike vids he gets of us. If you wanted a decent looking custom mount at a reasonalble price that will fit your bike and eliminate vibration hes the man for the job. Hes a CAD wizz and pretty handy on the lathe too.

As much as I'd like to do the Paekak hill in the morning... it would make sense, IF your really wanting to play in the Rimutakas to hit that first via the Wairarapa. by afternoon the sun will set faster on the wairarapa side due to the hills so you'd want to be coming home via the Paekak hill and up the coast. Sun till 6.15pm that way. Less wind chill.
Leaving from Ashurst ex Mobil at 8am?
Or you could justgo the coast, over the Paekaks, up the Rimutakas and back down to Maidstone park. That would give you an arrival time of 10.30 but no dawdling.

PR2's were at a very good price (can't remember exactly, but a lot less than usual) but they were going out the door pretty quickly. I layby'd a set for the Tiger. May pay to get in there sooner rather than later. Angels - probably can't go wrong there either.
