If anyones interested Douge (Pantah 500) and I (on Gerble) are going for a wee poodle tomorrow Pahongina Valley, that place with the DC3 , Hunterville, Fordell, Turakina Valley, Marton, home.
We're leaving Palmerston North around 10am and will swing by Ashhurst Mobil but we wont stop...:shifty:
Will be a nice sedate pace don't want to get back home too early ah?

Chateau to Plateau tomorrow:
Right here's my plan (and at this stage there's at least 4 of us: 2 x Connies, 1 x Bandit, 1 x Fat Boy & possibly 1 x Horse): we're meeting at BP Rangetiki and leaving at 06:30 (that means wheels turning at 06:30). Heading over Vinegar Hill and up SH1 to Turangi, breakfast at the truck stop, gas up and then over the Hill to the Chateau. Riders briefing is at 10am so need to be there before hand for registration etc.
We'll probably hang back at the Chateau for a while to keep out of all the traffic on the FH. Stop at Whanga for lunch with the rest of the ride but possibly leave early and just come straight home via the 'naki (possible diversion to Inglewood).
If anyone wants to join us on the way up that's fine and then they can either stick with us, go with the main bunch or do their own thing...
Oh, it's gonna be HOT!

Doug and I had a good ride. Called into Barrys and was introduced to Mellisa. Decided to go right instead of left at the Apiti T intertection. 10 kms of unsealed bit before you come out at Rangiwahia. Needless to say Doug was swearing an curesing at me ;) Met up with a chap on a black SV1000 (ezirider) there who waited for us at Ashhurst, but left around 5 minutes before we got there. Thinking we'd missed him he headed up west valley rd to Apiti so the SV was a bit dusty and the chain needed a bit of lube lov'n. Doug to the rescue. Also met a nice couple at Mangaweka on a silver Bemmer and 90s CB400/4(non v-tec project big one). Mentioned about the Friday night rides, so may have another couple there at some stage.
Left the DC3 and toodled (with the SV1000 in tow) down the SH then onto Hunterville, Fordell, Turikina, Marton, Makino rd home.
Had a nanna nap then went around to Douge and Robins for dinner. Nice and cool now so am tempted to get out again.

I haven't had my greatest day ever.
Just out of Taumaranui I got stuck behind some slower traffic and lost sight of Banditrider et al. And then going up a hill on some recently resurfaced seal (with hot tar providing little grip to the stones, so each bike was leaving a sparse fantail of gravel behind them) my bike broke its drive belt.
I was eventually picked up by the TEC vehicle, we loaded the bike onto the trailer, and kept on trucking. Got to Stratford, the bike was secured at one of the bikeshops there (the owner's a Lions member) and I managed to get a lift home (in a car) with a couple from Palmy who'd been in NP yesterday and had hung around in Taranaki as the wife's parent's were on the ride.
I think this bike's trying to break my heart. I'm going to arrange to get it transported back here in the next couple of days, at this stage I'm planning to park it in the shed and leave it there until sometime in March when I might be able to afford to fix it again.

And still the mounds of metal on the side of the road with no road workers in sight?
Well anyway I started to pack a bit to see how much I could fit into my pack, turns out not a lot for a 51 litre capacity. But luckly I just scored a 35 litre Ventura pack off Trademe not long ago for $100 so hopefuly it will arrive before Friday and I can zip both packs together. :woohoo:

Just making mention of the track day to try and drum up some custom for em (sorry mate figured you would be at work but ummmm it's tag and you were it lol) Sorta like, if no one shows they might not do it again and thats just wrong !
Sooo as a plug it goes like this !
There is a "Slight" chance of getting some informed info, from a not a bad sort of rider down at manfield morra !
Along with a team of coaches, some bloke by the name of Slight will be on hand to help any (learner road riders to racers) that may want a little advice or help !

Thanks for the kind words, I'm fairly gutted atm.
BR - would have phoned/txted, but there's no cell coverage of any kind along the Forgotten Highway, except on a few hilltops, and certainly wouldn't have reached you in Whanga.
Bonez - yep, I really love the bike, I love the way it looks, the way it sounds, the way it rides, it just doesn't seem to want to love me back. :)
Owl - such a thought did cross my mind today. <Insert rant about shitty state of our roads>
Thing is, something like a 1/4 of the bikes on the ride today were probably belt drive, not just Harley's but also like the Kawasaki VN900 the TEC vehicle had to pick up a bit after mine (with a flat tyre). They all went over that same patch of crappy seal, I just drew the lucky number and broke a belt. :(

It'd be worth going over the belt guards and looking to see where stones are getting through. It may be possible to modify the guards or fabricate something from acetal or nylon sheet to eliminate gaps and weak spots!

Sorry to hear about that Horse-I think Owls idea of up-grading/adding some kind of guard might be the ticket. The Beastie has a small guard under the belt, but I have found tar and small stones stuck up in there so it is only a matter of time until it happens to my bike:pinch:

I spoke to a mechanic at City Honda today and we talked about belt drives and he said it's so common for belt drives to snap if a stone gets flicked up by the wheel and into the guard.
Is this the reason the major manaufactures haven't converted to belt drive?

Not really! Harley's are made by Americans for Americans and they don’t face the same issues that we have here. The belt drive is great in its home market i.e. quiet, smooth, reliable, low maintenance and possible to achieve 70,000-90,000 miles on a single belt. It just doesn’t fare too well here with our crap roads!:msn-wink:

Heavy & loose a bit more power in the drive train. Not an issue on cruisers or big bore tourers.
Though a lot of scooters & most quads are shaftees...

Well, starting to develop a slightly more positive outlook than I had on Sunday night. Plans are afoot - I figure if I'd have to park up the bike for about 6 weeks before I can afford to fix it, I might as well have a go at replacing the belt myself, as that'll probably take just as long. :)
Garage space has been arranged thanks to a friend, and a service manual has been ordered (which I should buy anyway). The procedure looks a bit daunting to me, but it'll be a good learning experience.
Thanks again for the support; I'll start a thread somewhere here (probably in the cruiser subforum) once things get underway for real.

Sweet, did you look into the cost/viability of converting to chain drive? The part I like the most about that is that in theory you would'nt have a major dismantling job on your hands every time it needs replacing.

I wouldn't make a torque wrench priority mate.. A good one isn't cheap and that money could be well spent on other things. ( good socket set, good screw driver set, good ring open ender set ) These are the basics that every person job will demand.
With the way things are put together these days there is so much lock etc etc a torque wrench is rarely used. I'd only recommend it for engine internals, everything else just make sure it is secure.. ie tighten, go for short ride then re-check..

No doubt I'll get all the bullshit about budgets and contractors, timelines, efficiencies, resources and accountabilities and all the rest of it. Seriously though, maybe you shouldn't tackle unsealed roads with a rubber band (although if a Buell Ulysses is supposed to be an adventure bike then maybe it's ok) but you should be able to ride on supposedly sealed routes...

Wherever you head around here the roadworks is very poor quality. It seems to be either too much tar and not enough chip to cover it or bucket loads of chip which hasn't been rolled. Do they still do that? maybe they've only got one sweeper.
It is total crap and this year is definitely the worst. I saw the biggest balls up yet on Rewa Street and this was sprinkled chip as a footpath. quality control is lacking.
The more complaints the more chance of action _ Ministerial maybe?

Wow now I know why you guys rave about Vinegar Hill, went there to Taihape to meet a mate at Mangaweka,in best Manawatu fashion we left at 1.15pm instead of about 11.00am,as they were later leaving and enjoying the ride down.Recieved text at Taihape saying they left Waiouru about 20min earlier, returned to his relatives home at Mangaweka and proceeded to ride home.
Two things of notice gang members don't wave back, and all others did. When stopped at lookout on Vinegar Hill and realise petrol bar drops to last it makes for fun riding, seems it had 5.5ltrs left, only bad part is 1.5 ltrs left when last bar flashes with fuel symbol.Road surface was pretty good, new stone chip well swept in most parts.

I'd be interested to hear what sort of millage you get out of it, last time I checked mine it was 19.6km/liter so on last fuel bar you have almost 100km of juice left.
