Wow now I know why you guys rave about Vinegar Hill, went there to Taihape to meet a mate at Mangaweka,in best Manawatu fashion we left at 1.15pm instead of about 11.00am,as they were later leaving and enjoying the ride down..
Sorry our times didn't match up, I was in Turangi by then, awesome day for a ride :ride: Beast was on form

Two things of notice gang members don't wave back, and all others did.

Funny you should mention gang members, we followed a bunch of Warriors through desert road and they had some huge apehangers. I was intrigued to know what they were like to ride with, bikes handled like shit:lol:. Kerry jumped the traffic and them and headed off and I pootled with them, too chicken to overtake on those bends:lol:

The guys got ahead of me and then they saw Kerry stopped and went back to see if he was ok and ruined that photo opportunity. We had a quick chat and apparently your arms don't ache when you have them over your head all day!!!

They have some good taste though, they liked the blue beast and particularly the noise it made :sunny:

Had a couple of near misses with the law but somebody was smiling on us. We went Bulls, Turangi, Napier and PN but had a few bits to do enroute so took 12 hours to do it !!!!!!

Worse km/hr than the average manawatu ride

Yep it's a good run through there aye :)
I'd be interested to hear what sort of millage you get out of it, last time I checked mine it was 19.6km/liter so on last fuel bar you have almost 100km of juice left.

Not to sure of distances, but the manual says 5.5ltr once the symbol flashes,so at say 12km/ltr expect about 70-90km,when the bar flashes it is almost oh shit empty.1.5ltr won't get ya too far.

rottiguy
7th February 2009, 15:51
yeah made me nervous as hell the first time the fuel gauge started flashing, only recently realized ya still got about 100km to go but don't like the no reserve buzz, must check my millage now I have over 4000km on the clock.
Happy trails :)

That 5.5 ltrs left when the light starts flashing can not be too far off, I usually fill up as soon as it flashes & still have over 5 lts in the tank .. did a trip to whitby a while ago & since I was running late did not gas up .. did not run out either

yeah it says 5.5 liters in the manual but like a typical NZ male I never read manuals until after the fact

Going for a bit of a ride today if anyone is keen, either going Apiti way out toward Hunterville, or if the weather looks better the other way will go through the gorge toward castlepoint.
Meet at Ashurst Mobil 10am leaving by 10.30

Well it was good to see the weather played ball on the western side so we could keep the plan of Apiti, Vingear Hill, Halcombe loop.

so waiting for Balzy & Cj this morn, good chance to scrub in the new tyre, and my g/friend gave her partner a leave pass for the day so the duc monster made the trip.
so off to Ashhurst & met up with Rottiguy & Owl .. a few mins later & Sugi rocked in ..

so 6 bikes 7 ppl made the way out to Apiti.. Glad we missed the sheep but not the shit

Roads in very good order, & nice to see the publican advise about the grit at the turn off futher up the road.

Totally a fun ride & thanks guys just a great day to be out on the bikes

photos soon

Yep was a premo ride in sweet as weather, and the roads were sooo much better than they usually are. Every time I do that vinegar hill and Halcome road I like it more and more. My little ebony ho just keeps getting more bettera each time I get on her :p, she might have earned herself some new bling soon

First of all a bigs thanks to all those on the trip during the weekend, best ride ever I reckon (for me anyway). A huge thanks to Meanie's mate and his family in Ngatea for making us all feel so welcome with their generous hospitality.
Thanks to Barbender and Puddy for joining us on the loop, really nice to meet you guys.
A lot of lot of piss taking was done and a lot of fun and laughs were had.
I thought the most outstanding roads were the east side of the Coromandel, a lot of the road between Matata and Hicks Bay, all the way from Tokomaru Bay to Napier is top notch!

As always it was a collabration of everyone on the ride to make the weekend run so well. It was fantastic to have all adults taking responsibilty for their own actions and a group working as one. I was a little surprised (but shouldnt have been really) how well the group stayed together (overall) considering the wide range of pace that was capable on the ride. Already pointing my thoughts towards the next one which may not actually happen till next year with the southern cross looming.
It was awesome having you along.

For anyone who's interested, I've started a blog (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/blog.php?u=14469) to talk about my bike, with the main focus at the moment being the DIY belt replacement. Not really much of note yet (oooh! I cleaned it! Oooooh! I didn't fix the side stand! :) ) but just thought I'd give a heads up.

And maybe for just 5 mins it'll stop you lot talking about what a great ride you had last weekend. :D Bastards!

Had a nice wee run up through Kimbolton where Sly offered me the use of the Triumph. Just a short run with my head below my bum height going down hill and through a swarm of hundreds of bees or such. (attracted to bright colour). A very firm and responsive ride in stark contrast to the cruisy Kat. Very torquey motor. I got my own ride back and we alternated following each other to Camp Rangi Woods. Just as we pulled up we met Freshtracks on the Scorpio just leaving. She said she only had togs on under the clobber, but maybe not.:gob: Campsite is looking mint but the Totara Reserve side is looking sad.

We headed back to Palmy together encountering lots of loose metal and a right noddy in a Terrano who decided he would accelerate as Freshtracks went to overtake and pull alongside then kept pace with her as the Scorpio slowly inched past on the 2km straight.:scooter:

A nice run. Gutsy riding Freshtracks. Awesome bike Slydesigns.:Punk: Looking forward to seeing the refinements.

Cheers chaps. I'm writing this with one hand so she's a bit slow. Yeah, went for a ride with Kerry Sunday morning. Over the track and as we come through the first set of twisties onto the uphill straight, the front let go during the turn. Managed to catch it but by the time that was sorted I was in a massively unstable oscillation (tankslapper) from which the only thing I could do was try and ride it out. That didn't work so I had to bail. Landed on my back REAL hard. All blank after that until Kerry had me sorted. About 20 Auckland RATS helped out too and I got an ambo ride to Palmy hospital.

My gear's not too bad and I've been on the phone to the insurance companies so hopefully won't be too long before I'm decked out again. Already had a new helmet lined up so will have that soon.

Ride safe out there! And HTFU yourself :bleh:

Cheers for all the well wishes, support, visits, help with the bike and all the logistics guys, that's what I love about this site eh

The insurance issues seem to be coming together very nicely with AMI (gear), ANZA and the bike insurers all doing a sterling job to see that things are happening quickly.

Don't know if I'll be back in Black or Blue just yet, but I'm not particulary fussed either way. A new black one would be rather nice though

Personally, I'm doing quite well, still sore but nowhere near as bad as a few days ago. I'll be glad to see the cast off as it's quite heavy and hurts an already hurting shoulder.

My hand feels fine which is a surprise as the X Rays were a shocker! Bones everywhere. But I'm assured I'll play the violin again very soon which is good as I didn't play one before

Ribs are NOT designed to be broken, take it from me they hurt when they are! So please people, look after yours!

I thank the biker gods I was wearing good gear. If you look at my gear and then look at me you will see why. My upper and lower body look just fine, on the outside, while my jacket and pants don't. They held up bloody well all the same.

My helmet was completely munted particulary around the frontal facial area. Always remember to make sure it's on firmly as I'd hate to see my face if mine hadn't been!

I count myself very lucky to be up and mobile so soon, especially after seeing Helen still in a wheelchair and still in hospital.

I have wires in my right hand which will come out in a few weeks time, and I have a very large hole in one knuckle of my left hand. It will be interesting to see how that heals.

I'm very grateful I did most of my former binning on dirtbikes, as once the front initially went, reactions took over to prevent what could have been a very nasty highside with much more serious injuries.

Kerry saw the whole thing in his mirrors and confirmed just how violent the tankslapper was. I have some very interesting pics of the 'trajectory' too which shows the forces involved.

I'm pleased to know that once the bike became (VERY) unstable, that there wasn't too much I could do, apart from what I'd already tried to stop it. Bailing off was the only decision as it was literally uncontrollable :bye: I did try getting the power on but it was out of my hands so quickly. I'm just thanking god there was no oncoming traffic or any other obstacles in my path. No matter how good the gear is it don't stop the 'g', which is what does the damage.

So as said, a huge thanks for everything from me

Looking forward to the next chapter now. Take great care out there everyone :sunny:

Case in point for the new ICON Field Armoured Vest I just purchased. Its a fully plated kidney belt/back protector/chest and shoulder rig thats lightweight and comfortable but offers protection to one of the two plces that still concern me. The chest area.

The other being the front of the thighs. Something to be said for the storm trooper look. I wear a ton of gear when I used to race at Mystery Creek in SuperX, yet out here on the roads there is less protection worn.

Lucky you wrap up good, and obviously bail out well.

Now go buy an Xbox and play WSBK-08 until your better.

Yeah a number of manufacturer's are making intergrated amour vest now, Knox also do a nice back and chest protector combo too.

Interesting points raised here. My Triumph gear was VERY well protected all round, which is why I suffered 'only' impact injuries which not much could have prevented.

I've just got back from Whitlocks in Wanga's where I scored a brand new Shoei Patriot off TM for $750.00. A bloody good buy, fits real snug and really light.

Stage one of the gear replacement has begun. I'm expecting AMI to come up with identical leathers and I may get the old ones back which I'll repair. I'm a happy camper.

Looking forward to seeing that 675 Sly, real glad you got that issue solved mate.

Lol, no worries EJK. I can't say for sure but I can confirm it was greater than 30 k's. Just one of those things really, the front loses grip for just an instant and the rest of the bike needed somewhere to go :shit: Unfortunately it wasn't going where I thought best. Something to do with V2 I'd surmise. And a few of Newtons Laws thrown in for good measure. And I certainly couldn't break them any more than they were already.

Thanks for the thoughts  The Tiger isn't too happy, now that I can confirm :(

The whisper kit definitely helps quieten things up but I still wear plugs. Some people complain that it make the helmet warmer but I'm undecided - when it's hot it's hot. Others say you can't get ya camel bak tubes past them - still haven't tried mine out (should have had it on our wee loop). Incidently when I left Waiouru with the helmet undone (twat!) it didn't even lift at pace and I only discovered my dumarse mistake when the strap started beating on me. Small investment for a bit more comfort...

The insurance issues seem to be coming together very nicely with AMI (gear), ANZA and the bike insurers all doing a sterling job to see that things are happening quickly.

With luck you won't have the same claim's handler I had at AMI.

I have a very large hole in one knuckle of my left hand. It will be interesting to see how that heals.

Picked up my whisper kit today and the patriot is quiet as a mouse now. Pretty warm day and I was pootling in town as well as a blatt home to scrub in the new front tyre and the wind noise was minimal. Didn't make the helmet hot as it has those nice vents top and bottom. Well, in a few weeks I'll be able to road test mine and make a decision then. I must admit I do like a quiet helmet so I'll probably go for the kit either way. I've had a good look at them and they do look the biz.

General advice here. If your strap is not secure, STOP, and make sure it is. Not preaching, just want to emphasise how important it is after seeing the state of my old one.

Yes guys, the Tiger doesn't LOOK too beat up I agree. It's got way more damage than the Toolman's though and his was written off. I haven't heard the decision on mine yet so I can't say if they'll replace or repair. I'm not really worried either way and my policy is for full replacement if it's written off within the first year. I'll just have to wait and see. ANZA did indicate they could get me a black one if it goes that way.

Hmmm, a deep philosophical question there Tone. Normal. In this context normal means waking up and being able to stretch and sit up without sharp stabbing pain coursing through one's upper body. It means being able to move freely in bed at night. It means not hearing the crunch of bone on bone. Not taking an age to shower and dress. Not having to be on painkillers constantly which have their side effects and only dull it anyway. Knowing that by the time 5 pm comes around you're going to be hurting and that's that until bed where it's just a different pain. Sleeping in a sitting position, hoping you don't disturb the bone regrowth from the previous day. Worry that it won't heal straight. Coughing or laughing is painful but necessary. Plaster casts are heavy and horrible. You know.

Had a good night last night. Bandaged up my ribs and had heat therapy, worked really well. The current medical philosophy is not to strap ribs in case you use them. So they just leave you in pain, bugger that, I'm going for strapping :calm:

Cool, checked the weather and it seems to be a little worse on the west coast precipitation wise but breezy everywhere, I don't think it's gonna be particularly wet tomorrow but the wind might be a bit tiresome but I can put with it just as long as it's not blowing a howling gale.
Will check the weather situation as soon as I can tomorrow morning and give anyone interested the heads up as best I can.

Sorry to have missed you, would have been pootling through the gorge with Pinky on my tail about then

Considering how the weather started I managed an absolute mint adventure :ride:

Gorge to Tui for a mocha, left family on tour and Mr n Mrs Ynot having some lunch and went to see if I could retrace the route Bonz brought us back from the Annie. After some great twisites and a few gravel excursions (I shall save for SK1PY) I found the route to homelands and returned via bluff road :niceone:.Lunch and a chat about the summer event next weekend, 3.5k tickets sold, can't wait :2thumbsup:

Whilst the sun shone I took the family up to the WINDfarm, bit breezy but the saddle road was dry and in about the best condition I have seen it for ages. Took them back to woodville so had to use ballance and the track to get home:ride:

Loads of bikes out and all happy and waving. Nice 1k behind Rebyl but he went for the gorge.

Slight breeze but what a storming few roads and all within 40k of home.

Hope you all had as much fun as I did :sunny:

Did mean to try the anti-mist pin lock visor thingy but forgot and as I only met 1k of rain the whole time probably not a good testing ride anyway.

Quick bike repair update - Bonez' primary locking tool worked a treat, I now have the entire primary assembly removed from the bike, and we're mere moments away from fitting a new belt. I'll update the blog as soon as I get a spare moment, which at this stage looks like it'll be sometime next month. :)

I'm now on the scrounge for a small torque wrench. I've got a big one that goes up to about 150 ft-lbs, but I could really use a smaller one with a max rating of 40-50ft-lbs for some of the small stuff. Anyone locally got one I could borrow for a couple of days?
