Yep hot as on the track at taupo yesterday too. And again today. Watch some awesome racing with 86 doing a fantastic job and cowboyz setting pbs all day. Nice. Nice ride home with only one top and one car deciding that a not look pass maneuver was ok! Only to find i was right in front of him as he pulled out round a blind corner! Go figure! Anyway v.hill to home 28 min best time. Slippery in places on such a hot day otherwise perfect. :scooter:

For all those keen to do the run to welly on the 19th I'm organising a group ride for those heading down.
Will be leaving Levin at 9am from BP station, heading into Otaki via Waitohu Valley rd/Rahui rd. Stopping at Mobil Paraparaumu to pick up any Kapiti riders then heading over piecok hill rd and taking paremata rd to the starting point.
As Flynn has stated above meet in the square and then head on down to levin BP.It would be great to have some Manawatu riders to ride with.

Yeah, it's good fun alright. Can get a bit freaky when there's 220kg of bike moving around under you - more often than not a few more herbs gets ya out of trouble. Rear tyre is pretty good but think I need to look at changing the front soon - fairly worn.

Don't follow too closely - looking at the tyre tracks behind me, she chucks the gravel around a fair bit...

Can't wait to get her on a decent gravel road - one with not quite so deep gravel or with some decent wheel tracks (yes, I'm a wuss).

220kg is quite a load alright. DR is 166 and feels like a feather. You could maybe trade for a lighter bike? There are plenty to choose from and all have plenty of offroad goodies to add on - tanks, bash plates, seats etc. Thats my plan once the finances recover a bit :shit:

Yep, fair enough, wouldn't be keen getting stuck too far from civilisation, especially if she went down. I got the DR for its light weight and I expect it will lie down on the odd occasion but I also think she'll go pretty much anywhere.

I wondered if you hadn't compromised your comfort for getting to metal roads (on longer rides) by buying a more dirt orientated bike like the DR but there is the ability to do trail rides now too so that expands the possibilities a fair bit, you'd want to ditch those standard tyres though...

To a certain extent, yes I have. But there are some good seat options out there and the DR certainly has the poke to get to places. And once its there, it has huge flexibility. I'll look at tyres when these ones are dead, they are Bridgestone Trailwings, not too bad really, no chicken strips anymore anyway and they are pretty capable of a good pace offroad.

Yeah i was refering to the tyres when and if you decided to go do trail rides, would be seriously limited grip off road, knoblies and trailer it to the event.

I think that's what I've got on the front at the mo - it's fairly worn now and I think it may even be the original tyre (at 14,000km). It's got a pretty new Michelin Anakee on the back so will probably match that when I change the front. Got no idea at all about adventure tyres...

I think if you were going to take a V-strom off road you definitely need more aggressive tyres as it spins up at anything above idle in the rough stuff. But I'd say tyre life would not be good...

86GSXR
15th May 2011, 13:03
I met a couple of blokes last week, both on DR's who recommended some type of Michellin. Reckoned it was damn good for the gravel and mud with decent onroad performance too. It was quite a hefty looking number with good knobbly looks. I'll have to find out what it was. I'd believe 14K for a front as well.

15th May 2011, 13:17
It's quite funny getting into a different sort of riding where you know stuff all and have to start learning again. The Stromtrooper Forum is pretty good although it's like any forum - take everything with a grain of salt...

Michelin Anakee below, apparently there is a '2' version as well - no idea what the difference is or what's on the DL...

It is a bit weird eh. My main issues will be getting a bashplate and maybe a seat mod. Heated grips and a Scottoiler would be nice too. Really have to research tyres at some point but I'm not looking at serious hardcore mud. Although, I do want to get into some pretty remote spots.

Those Anakees look like they'd deal with most dry stuff quite well....

banditrider
15th May 2011, 13:28
There's a guy on here somewhere selling bashplates - do a wee search. Already got grips sorted and Scot Oiler was on it when I got it. Gonna get a lube tube to connect to the Oiler as the reservoir has been put in a real dumb place - it'll also increase the time between top-ups.

Totally awesome day. We spent all day being 'out the back' of Marton, Hunterville, Mangaweka, Kimbolton and Pohangia. Who would have thought there were SO many great gravel roads withing a stones throw of Palmy!!! Great bunch of guys and wow, talk about pace on some of that gravel! I highly recommend a mandatory dirtbike in everyones garage. Do it! Awesome!

Awesome ride today! Did the whole Ridge Rd down into Apiti, past Makoura Lodge, Utuwai, Pohongia, Finnis Rd, then cut back to ZigZag and Watershed. Stunning vista's and 95% gravel!

Took me 5 hrs to do 134.2 km so quite a typical Ashhurst ride  That used 7.05 litres of 91 which means the DR achieved 19.04 kms/lt and cost $14.50 (not including the Latte at the end). Not too bad for a spectacular and brilliantly fun days motorcycling

Ouch, annoying and expensive. Reminds me a little of the damage done to the Tiger, but that tyre and wheel were destroyed. Would pay to have a very close look and a think about replacing it.

Given the day i thought i'd try out the Gentle Annie as it seem it's had been fully sealed now. Set out from Vegas at 11am and did the boring straight through main drag route to Hastings where i fueled up and had some lunch. Once sorted I set out to Omahu and the turn off to Gentle Annie, got buzzing along and was pleasantly surprised by the flow of the road, lots off well surfaced sweeping bend punctuated by the occasional 45kph posted corners.. Nice! There's some lovely scenery through there early on which gives way eventually to forestry which reminded me a little of the Napier-Taupo road back in the day.
Further on through the forestry parts it began to tighten up with signs of the afore mention finished road works but all good then I hit what can only be described as some piss poor tarsealing! The tar itself was actually sticking to my tires and they in turn were picking up every loose stone in sundry, I can only imagine what the inside of my front guard and hugger look like after being scraped by a million and one stones that were stuck to my tires. I stopped at a bridge and had a look see, summarized that if taken gently said stones stuck to my tires would eventually fall off and the tires would clean themselves up, had a death stick and went gingerly on my way, after another couple of k's muppeting along taking corners with tires fully loaded with stones (which is a weird feeling i tell ya) I stopped yet again and decided that i'd have to clean the tires by hand as centrifugal forces weren't doing the job for me and I was worried if i rode the bike any faster the stones flying off at speed my do some damage.
Once this was taken care of things came right and all was well, there are some steep roads through there but nothing that couldn't be handled.

NZsarge
1st June 2011, 20:25
The tight section and bad tarseal out of the way the road once more opened up into some lovely corners and scenery again punctuated by the odd tighter section, good stuff! There was bugger all traffic and I wound the bike up a wee bit as the road was open and readable but kept things in check, just quick enough to enjoy the 14 under a bit of load in the corners... :niceone: :D
So, even though there some hassles during the ride through I highly recommend the Gentle Annie as a ride, just take something to brush the stones from your tires after you get through the shit tarsealing job and you'll be golden if you give it all the respect a country road needs to be given ie; damp patched in sheltered areas etc...
Wouldn't recommend it in the wet though. Could be a bitch after a frost too...
