I hate yellow but I do like those "Go faster" stickers. For as hard as it would get ridden (not hard) the 16 inch tyres available would be OK. I remember the Cycle World spread on them when it was a new bike. I lusted after one then. But its got to be the Maverick colours .... Say I own it for $5k. Up from Qtown say another $500. I reckon you'd budget $5k (more if painting) to go thru it and get to a point you were happy - less if you were lucky and the bits in the boxes were good and fit the thing etc. stock Exhausts used to last three years. I said no more four cylinder four strokes because you have to buy fucking four of everything.
Heres a plan. You buy it and do all the work and I will take it for a hoon.
Yes I remember them from 84/85,,, In the longer races there were some over heating probs and of course the 16 inch front wheel was fashionable then. Aussie Len Willing and Kiwi Iain Pero peddled them well in Australia.

I might have a punt at this. Depends what it goes for. I never owned one back in the day - I had GSX 750's and GPz750 then one of those 500cc Kawa twins.
awesom in there day, mean lookers sooner the 750 turbo tho
Clearly has not been run since the exhaust was poked through the plastic side cover and the brand shiny new rear shocks were put on.
If you can't do it properly and aren't going to get it finished to a working condition, leave the bloody thing alone.
mate... its gona look fucking cool on fire...
Lord help us all. Love the obvious question.
LOVING the exhaust exit... thats cool man... serious, but yeah needs a meter droped through the tripples...
What an abortion this is,
I mean, just, . .
FUCK YES... thats well done, I like it 3k only cos of the TL brakes
Awesome patina apparently.
Yes, yes. It is covered in patina.
$50... ok 68 bucks only cos its the same year as me.
Heres one of my perennial favorites. The multi bike sale
At least I think hes selling them all as an auction. It's not very clear. But who wants or has space to buy 4 clapped out small cc trail bikes? Not everyone has a business yard to store things in for 15 years.
yeah not sure how that works, they be worth more sold seperatly... but hey he wants em gone... $700 is my offer.

Engine has been checked over- what? By this gimboid? That might mean it isn't seized and the valve covers were removed and some cigarette paper fitted under the tappets as he'd heard that was how you Didthetiming from an uncle.
To be fair it's redeeming feature is that it doesn't look like it's been left to rot outside since the 80s.

When I was reading Brit bike mags a common view was that the CB500 was a better buy than the 750. The 500s are cheaper and a nicer ride. I agree - but I'm biased.
In a spirit of generosity (or something) I'll leave that particular bargain to be snatched by somebody else.

Thorpe Bros Engineering in ChCh used to do it too. Tony's still going but solo now, would probably do it if wanted. I've seen a couple of fronts on race bikes widened where they were orphan hub widths or strange disc bolt patterns. Needed to be a really good reason to do it. $$$

A long time ago I was looking for another wheel for the back of my speedway bike - they used (still do) a fairly narrow rim for a 3.50 x 19 tire and Yamaha cast front wheel seemed to fit the bill, however upon finding of one at the bike shop in Pretoria Street, Lower Hutt (it was that long ago) revealed that it was quite heavy. Closer inspection revealed the words "malleable iron" so I put it back, and got a 40 spoke Honda CB750 rim laced onto the hub instead. I figured I was slow enough already without cast iron wheels.
BUT much later (about 5 minutes ago) - I found this "Yamaha didn't make the wheels. They were made by a company formerly known as Asahi Malleable Iron (look carefully it's cast into some of them) now known as Asahi Tec. They appear to be a Tier 1 OEM supplier to both the automotive and motorcycle industries. https://www.asahitec.co.jp/english/product/wheel.html If anybody would know the type of aluminum alloy used, they might."

Koosman used to do a lot of that sort of thing with Suzuki GSXR etc wheels it was cheaper than new aftermarket rims.

Koosman used to also make the plasma coated alloy disc as well as a lot of flash adjustable yokes etc.

Thats brilliant - the entire front end could be grafted - the forks are OK if you work over the cartridges, the brakes are pretty good stock and can be improved, the forks are long enough and like you say the rim sizes have modern tyres available. I believe there are a couple of VFR400's around with Triumph wheels in them (675 not Bonnie). I think I saw one on Glenn Hayward's bench a while back.

True. The thing is: if you are putting shit on tardme the idea is to SELL it. Not to wave your dick around and be coy and say "Well at some point in the future then this might be for sale, because my hectic jet setting lifestyle only gives me a limited window for you plebs to marvel at my wonderful taste and fabulous collection". I dont care. I am actually his buyer for that at reasonable money - I love these tiny jewel-like things and I only regret selling two bikes I have owned in my life: My CB400F and the immaculate CB750K2 I had.
As a grumpy old man myself, I have limited tolerance for grumpy old men. :)
Anyway, if old boy does get serious about selling, I might have a punt at it.

i would expect to see more exhausr tape and brass.
That front end is itself of a iconic bike Gilera cx 125.
my old man said he called in at RNZAF Woodbourne and nearly cried as someone there was in the process of cutting off a completely intact vincent twin gearbox so the could use hardley 5 speed
https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery/GIlera%20CX125%2091%20%205.jpg
Gilera with the cx125 only made 1000 bikes that 10% of how many vincent twins were made in 1953. let alone the comets.
Just looked it looks like 3000 comets all up.

few have got their original belly pans, they were a weak spot. $70 and the bit you look at, the dash and surrounding foam is wrinkled, Piccies show very little actual condition, more like a brochure, wonder what it's really like and where's the original front brakes and pipes?

Not sure it's worth 90k though. The Classic bike market is one I always keep my eye on.
this is where I have to say... how is a bike with SFA miles on it worth so much? take your mx asuming its a stroker... well if anyone was wanting to fire it up they would have to do a full engine strip down, bearings will be coroded, seals britel sorry but id sooner have a mint bike with milage on it, the RG5 in OZ... will only sell to a colector that will have a very expensive static model, Im not about that.

Thoughts? That's about the best you can realistically hope for on one of those. The market is relatively of what a good one goes for.
The best way to keep a 2T motor happy if you're going to store it is to park it it up with a dry motor, ie no petrol in it . The Crank seals will appreciate it.
Not sure if a Collector would care either way...
Are you special needs?
The only way to store a 2 stroke long term, is to fill cases and cylinders with oil. Any other solution leeds to perished seals and fucked bores.
Best leave the plugs out so as not to break anyone's knees when they try to kick it over 20 years down the track.

They came about due to production racing regs which stated that the original bar mounts had to be used.
So mimic clipon bar position.
Fitting a set to my Mach 3 was the 2nd best thing I did to it. Weight forward and lower really helped.
Best thing was fitting heavier clutch springs. Stopped the factory slip.

So I was happy with the A10's which I think were old BSA bars ? (Hairpin at Levin I think 73?)

Kirby crashed like a sack of spuds too. Those of us who raced the kawa triples in the day are a dying breed.
The usefulness of the 500 as transport was summed up by the mileage. 8mpg on the road, 12mpg on track.
immense fun though. Ride it to the drags and finish the day running off against the top car. Then ride it home.

He's still around and upright. Do you mean GSX750F ? Steel frame and full fairings ? Probably a red one ? GSXR750M short stroke engine ?
He had two GSXR750H models which were both raced. From memory he sold one, wouldn't surprise me if he still had one tucked away.

Nah, GSXR750 1985, hence the 'F'. Here's the bike. As you say he had two of these, my brother and I were going to buy both but just ended up taking one. He said they were both ex-proddy race bikes and was told by him that both engines were blueprinted and balanced and ran oversize carbs, all I know was it pulled a lot harder and longer than my friends std 1986 G model. This was the bike I paraylsed my arm on, this pic is from after the crash.

They were earlier than I thought then. Both sets of carbs were bored oversize. One to 31mm and the other to 33mm. Before he landed two sets of RS flatslides they'd been used on the 1100 he had at the same time. Cams were stock and on stock lobe centers. I suspect both had the ignition advanced 5deg as was a common mod. First season of racing the 1100, there was always a spare 750 on the trailer as a backup.

I wish I still owned that bike, but at the time I figured riding was over for me. He told me that one of them had done maybe half a dozen races and the other was a back up bike. Reckoned he showed Slighty a thing or two as well, no idea on that one, in 1985 I was only 10 and my interest was in dirt bikes.

I remember him warning me of the dangers of drinking coke, said he used to drink a big bottle every day and now look at me he said haha. Yup I dealt with him at a few of those places too, he always had time for me. When I first took the bike for a 'speed test' it threw me into a massive tank slapper at well over 200kmh. I took it straight back to him and he promptly fitted new tyres to it free of charge, solving the problem.

Yeah, well, remember Slight was new to 750's - and riding an FZ750 which wasn't quite as quick as the GSXR. His best story on the 750's was the first Taihape GP where you came over a rise to a fairly slow corner. Kirb was just over the rise and hard on the picks when Robbie Deans flew off the hump and finished up with his front wheel jammed between Kirb's bike's muffler and the back wheel. The bikes weren't easily separated so both were DNF.
That incident got a bit of airplay the year we ran Robbie in the SI. Worth it though - it was Robbie's only F1 title.

I wonder if the slappy tyres were pirelli phantoms? It was well known even from mere days after the F's release, that if you put pirelli phantoms on the 750 - it then tank slapped like a muthafuka.

Not sure, at that dumb age I didn't even regularly check tyre pressures let alone brands ha. The tank slapper was the worst I have ever experienced, I passed my mate on his 750 with the throttle pinned on the road towards Tai Tapu from Halswell. The last I checked the speedo it was showing just over 250kmh (so maybe 220 in real terms) and as I crossed the centreline back into the correct lane I hit a small bump. Next thing I knew I was over the front of the bike looking at the front wheel and road going past me. I did nothing to save it, the bike thankfully settled itself. We pulled over, with my mate saying I turned into a blur in front of him. Once I got my composure back we rode straight back to Trev's, he took one look at the tyres and apologised saying they had been sitting on the bike for years and all he had done was check the pressures.

For most of that period trev ran the big production bikes on Dunlop 591's It was a long time before there was anything better.
The very early 750's had a short swingarm which made them prone to tankslappers.

Yeah 10mm shorter. But after changing tyres I never had it throw one like that again. He thought those tyres might have been on the bike since it was parked up, which would've been going on 10yrs maybe.

Ha! Sounds like a close call :sweatdrop
I have a few slapper tales - like the time crasher invited me into Wellington Mortorcycles to ride one of the first TL1000S bikes in the country - pre steering dampener with about 2 liters of fuel in it. Went up Mount Victoria, pulled out to pass a tourist bus, all fucking hell broke loose and I ended up lock to lock tank slapping up beside the bus. I remember the surreal look of all the Asian faces peering out the window down on it all happening. I managed to rip up the front end and straighten it that way, whew!

I only had the 750 for about 6 months before going to a G model 1100R. I "think" I used michilin high sports on the 750 to good effect. Then went Dunlop for the 1100. I think it might have been a 391 front???

Thats it. The prices for 90's stuff is going up because those guys now have the inclination and the disposable income to relive their misspent yoofs. Same as what happened to Brit bikes - the values just plummeted. And old boy saying "well it is advertised internationally". So what? people over there might have heard of them and all, but it was completely specific to the NZ market and the rule "workarounds" (far be it for me to say "cheating") happened here.
The only thing I can think of that did have proper international impact was the Britten. And a bunch of our racers of course - Crafar, Holden, the Hiscocks etc etc.

they were also built for the south african market, as for being a cheater, at least they were built at the factory, unlike the earlier black pipe gsx's. There will be a katana die hard somewhere in the world who will want to head hunt this. Ash King took decades to sell his 'brand new' HONDA CB1100R for less than half of that figure, and they can be authentivated, unlike this where the seller is the only one who has the numbers to authenticate it....

The reality is that NZ castrol six hour was a huge race internationally and that's why the factory made specials simply. Whoever won that race had order books filled in the northern hemisphere for people wanting a competitive proddie racer, and the public also wanted a winning machine. Anyone here who brought one new would be mid 60's now and likely want something a bit more upright to ride. Carl also wants $320000 for a personalised plate BEV of which pretty much no one will understand that either.

Rusty, doesn't charge properly (sure, its the battery @!).
8k buy now don't risk 7k auction. Line up line up.
I think what I object to to the most is the poor returning biker who thinks yeah I'd like to own a bike again and ends up with this pos and what great bikes we're missed for thus sort of wedge. They would give up again after such a charade.

Had a new Croz Z1 build call in to my place as part of a group on the way to the Burt.
And yes, that was roughly what he'd paid for it.
Slightly worryingly, it had 2 blue pipes. OE points ignition....i offered the use of a timing light to check and reset but they were booked to stop in Oamaru
and were happy to run it like that till then.
If I'd paid that much I'd have wanted sensible upgrades.

Look at the nastiness that is happening in pic four directly above the shock. Looks like a bit of D12 up in there somehow and the frame rail has been chewed to fuck. There is no way this can be road legal, regardless of having no mufflers…

They don't, that's why none of them are advertised with WOF and rego, just because there's an old plate bolted on doesn't mean it's in any way legal.
The paintjob looks as good as the one on the bike I sold in around 2010 as a reasonably tidy bike with all it's original bits except replacement mufflers, that's now lost it's fairing and headlight, and had a rattlecan paintjob without even removing the decals from the tank
