If you're asking that much for an odd hybrid which is neither Rg400 or 500, you'd at least proof read the bloody ad.

To be fair, maybe he does have a rare set if Bremcos and it is LVTA's typo. Took them three attempts to still get the LVV plate almost right on my RG hybrid . Yes I do have one, but mine would kick that ones arse. And I'd never expect to get 32k.

OK, so I have sort of decided that I might buy another sports bike. I want "the one that got away" back in the day - Honda RC-51 VTR1000 SP1 or SP2.
I remmebered The Bike Dealer had one and checked out his website.
He does still have his lady friend draped all over bikes as his banner. He doesnt have those pix on tardme any more. Its weird and anachronistic
Just so you know. He's sold all his RC-51's too.

:D I bought my Ducati off of Costa a year or so back (actually 18 months... time flies). It was as advertised and as inspected. It was an interesting experience though. I responded to an ad for a bike at one price, emailed him and said I will take it, and when I want to pick it up the price had increased..... Oh, and as soon as I got it I spent some money on consumables that had been tickled but should have been replaced. Whatever I was pretty flush at the time.
But I do get where you're coming from.
The guy who had the RC-51s is this guy out of Wellington I think: https://thebikedealer.co.nz/
Costa is Motorcycle Imports Direct: https://www.motorcycleimportsdirect.co.nz/bikes-for-sale really the most offputting thing for me was the memes on his noticeboard comparing Jacinda to Hitler (yes, really, in public) and Radio Christian Fascists playing on an out of tune tranny* in the showroom. He had some cool old bikes too which I got the feeling were part of his collection and not really for sale given the prices - like old mate with the $40k Kawa H2.

I went to his shop when he was in St Asaph St a few years ago, the guy is a wanker.
I was looking for a Speed Triple back then and he had the bike on the floor. I asked Costa if I could sit on it. Politely, as you do. He said 'only if you want to buy it ' in a threatening tone. Costa has been a germ on the scene for a couple of decades now.
Caveat Emptor. Stay away from this guy. I walked away too, bought a bike from somewhere else.

Neither Tommy's nor the two shops that have been in Brighton are in the same class as Costa. Tommy's staff would be obliging to make a sale. Yes, it would sometimes be overpriced but he was basically honest.
Pacific Motorcycles after the shift to Manchester st became dodgy cos of one person - working I believe on commission - who pre sold bikes which did not arrive.
Genuine sales through the shop were backed up properly.
Darcy Watson's shop existed only as a base for the race guys operating out of it. Stu Avant would occasionally sell someone a bike. Laid back beach side shop which I'd doubt ever made money.
Costa, I've dealt with when I was in the trade in ChCh. Always wanted something for nothing. Suspicious amounts of money in hand with no apparent income stream. If there was a repair to be done it was as cheap as possible. Then tell the customer they were new parts....

Imagine, spending a bunch of money then just giving up motorcycles as they haven't really improved, in fact they are a bit shitter than you remember.
When for the same money you could have bought a clapped out CB500X or ER650, ridden around for thousands of kms and realised how fun bikes are nowadays, . . . then only to realise those were just the crappy starters.

They came out at the same time as the Paul Smart if I recall. I seem to remember a road tester whinging about comfort. That's a lot of money to pay to make yourself miserable.
He starts it up and the noisiest thing is the clutch. Would anybody accept that crap from a Japanese manufacturer?

6th April 2024, 13:05
As regards the Paul Smart replicas, the unsigned ones are the rare ones. When Smart was last here in NZ, the model had been out for about 18 months.
Nearly every owner of one made the trek to Puke to get theirs signed.
Guy local to me went and told me how many were there. When I pointed out the scarcity value of an unsigned one he went away to think it through.
Haven't seen the bike since so don't know what conclusion he came to.
Ducati have mastered the marketing of "limited edition" "collectors model" motorcycles. Function is irrelevant.

I think that bike looks great and was contemplating one when they came out. Problem for me was no Ducati dealer within easy range of Dunedin for when it might need some attention. The last two new bikes I bought (KTM and Suzuki) both developed a sudden fault that made them unrideable and needing to be picked up by the dealer. Didn't fancy the risk with a Ducati but shit, ditch that exhaust and I cannot think of many better looking bikes than that, and thankfully not in red.
I'd be willing to go to something like $7.5 for that.

Can you imagine how miserable they would be to drive? That scrapes the border of my experience. Cars of that era were Dreadful. Bikes just pissed on them by a much larger margin than now.

Looking at that webbs catalogue, one expected price stood out as very optimistic.
The Maserrari - built by G Macrae. The 260M Zephyr single seater went recently down here for about 1/10 of the expected price of this.
A car with a better history and ready to race vs something with little recent history and needing recommissioning.
I suspect they're equating the Macrae name with added value.
Not a bike but IMO wildly optimistic.

I'd like to know it's history. Years back - 1970's - a mate of Russell Gillard had that exact combo.
It went on most of the road trials held then.
Haven't seen the outfit or the owner for decades.
How many of them could there be in NZ ?

Looking at that webbs catalogue, one expected price stood out as very optimistic.
The Maserrari - built by G Macrae. The 260M Zephyr single seater went recently down here for about 1/10 of the expected price of this.
A car with a better history and ready to race vs something with little recent history and needing recommissioning.
I suspect they're equating the Macrae name with added value.
Not a bike but IMO wildly optimistic.
the first couple of auctions went, Tom Sturgess of nelson classic bike museum, and another were locking horns and paying silly money, i don't think they sold a single bike in the last bike only auction, a mate paid to have his bikes shipped from timaru, and back, plus more too. he was not happy about it all,

retired experts are better, keen on rolling their sleeves up for a short job, pliable with wine maybe? The buyer base is shifting, a few years ago VMX bikes were of a value to people that had one when they were young had to sell, or dreamed of one, now they have chance to go back and relive that, those guys are too old to ride by and large so the next wave just wants a tool to have fun on, doesn't have to be a 1980 XYZ or the first of the prolinks that they dreamed of, and when they dont need to be so picky the market is wider, and cheaper in the end.

Yeah but the point he is making is amplified by VMX scenario where people have to bail from riding as dirt is punishing to 65 Yr olds and MX earlier.
But Croz will fail to find a Market for top end restoration Z900 very soon as they are big and heavy for a 74yr old.
Younger blokes want a GSXR anyway, so the Z will fall in value.
Ooh, the GSXR stretch makes the bones ache a bit. . .

Honda did the 450 plus the real equivalent would be the crappy 400 twin. Which they made even worse with an automatic version.
The Kawa 440 is the direct ancestor of the EX/GPZ500. Same bottom end layout as i found when developing the 500's for F3

Oddly in the photos he has several more bikes. Is he trying to cheap out on listing them, despite wanting moon beams?? Showing off? One of them is an actual Good condition TT500, a later model like I had, but in attractive orange.
But they weren't the Game changer. The XR was. And even then, only compared to other 4 strokes. In competition the 250 2 strokes roasted them, let alone the 490s etc.

Erm first link is to a generic mazda ute. Is there something you want to tell us?
I rode to a mates to show off my tuff TT500. He had just bought an XR500. Had a ride on the road. My TT was pretty average in comparison.
Bear in mind at 18 or 19 on suburban roads these were beasts.
Then I took my TT on the motorway. Something I rarely did then. Hmm. Actually a bit anemic. Low gearing made them awesome in suberbia.
Oh alright. Here's my favourite TT500 story . Bought it on a Sunday. Went to show it off at young lass place. Stayed to watch the Sunday Horrors. Which were a thing back then. No offer, (or chance really) of staying the night.
Rode off in a blaze of glory. Just down the hill. Bububa. Changed to reserve. Erm, What the?
TT just has On/Off. Competition bike.
Kawharahara (sp) so miles from anywhere. Footpath is gravel by railway. Push to next gas station.
Which is close on a Sunday night
Finally arrive at CBD Shell on the Quay.
Can barely talk.
Kick, kick, kick. Wait. Gas gets through and finally away.

Not sure if this is "optimistic" or not. I think it is but he is absolutely correct in that it is very rare, it is a first press, and it is a piece of a very important slice of NZ music history.
It shows that the most expensive record I ever bought (a week or so back - Gordons 2nd LP, original press from 81 cover VG/vinyl EX) for $300) was a bargain.
The most expensive 7" I have personally bought was only $150.
It does strike me though that all these things are valuable only to a certain subset of people and that "collector value" will decline as the audience ages and dies.
Anyway: your record collection from your teen years might be worth money, i smy point. If you still have it.

If you have that poster in good condition I will give you $200 for it. When you walk into my house the first thing you will see is a Gordons gig poster I stole back in the day, stored for years and had framed. I would love another deep sea diver poster.
John Halvorsen released a solo album last year under the name "Vorsen". It is cheerful, quiet and upbeat like the best Gordons work was. Fun fact - the first Gordons LP was re-released last year [edit: 2021] on Flying Nun and came with the Future Shock EP. https://www.flyingnun.co.nz/products/the-gordons-the-gordons-19812021-reissue?_pos=1&_sid=80517c3ad&_ss=r - I actually bought one so my OG '81 copy doesnt get any more worn - though it is in VGC.
My ears are still ringing from Gordons shows at the Gladstone and Hilly in the early 80's. :)

Sadly don't have the poster, found the pic on the interwebs of the one I remember being stuck on walls, there were smaller ones that were on lamp posts. Have to make do with a framed talking with the taxman about poetry tea towel instead.
I spotted a gordons poster among the images of christchurch past on the interactive picture wall thingy at the new library place, so somebody considers it to be historically relevant.

Why do people let their bikes rust like that and then think its some sort of badge of honour? Just bloody lazy.

the coolest pushbike wheels I ever built were red rims, stainless spokes and black hubs with whitewall tyres. Had the frame powdercoated and it was frickin cool. Sold it because I needed to thin the herd and never rode it.

Don't know about only 2 in NZ. Went with the old man and my brother to look at a pre-war Universal in ChCh in the 1950's.
JAP ohv V twin apparently made under licence in a fairly rugged rigid frame with girders.
Last I heard it's in someone's collection. Bro didn't buy it as the vendor wanted too much and wouldn't haggle.

Absolutely it is. I actually had one and it went really well. Objectively a better bike than my 83 GPz750 as it was shorter in the wheelbase, quicker handling and (marginally) lighter. It FELT lighter to ride because it changed direction quicker. There are some cool custom ones too where people have turned them into reps of the racebikes or resto modded them with modern forks and wheels and brakes. They got a reputation for having camshafts made of chocolate causing engine failures but Honda fixed that fairly early in production - my theory is any still running will continue to run forever. The reputational damage was done so they went to the VFR soon after (86?). But Freddie Spencer raced a VF750F in the states and did OK on it. Its my desktop wallpaper at the mo.

From an engine builder/tuners point of view the VF is much easier to tune. With bolt on sprockets on the cams it's easy to change the timing or install bigger/longer cams. The VFR gear drive pretty much sticks you with what Honda thought was best. Which isn't.
Both families of engines need crank massaging to make them reliable.
And they're a porky engine too.

We got unloaded a bunch of 700s from the US. Tarrifs on 750s upwards to try prop up their shitty home market offerings. Pah. Like that would sway a buyer not wanting a boat anchor. Ohh I'd never considered a wobbly cruiser throwback, but wait, the gummermint throws a grand or whatever on the price of a GSXR.

You're right the cowl it's a little amiss, The Rothmans colours, like the pepsi for the Suzukis or the red and white for the Yamahas are some of the more memorable colour schemes.
I like the front guard on the VF750 its shared with the CBX750F, IMO one of the prettiest front Guards ever made in the period with RWU forks.
I read something that the first VFR750's were all made at a loss to fix Hondas engineering reputation.

Was this a K100 BMW? Did it blow up in a fairly big way at some time? A mate bought a rather scuzzy K100 some years back off TradeMe, was reputedly a 6 hr bike that had dropped a rod and been rebuilt overnight (?) While replacing a clutch and fixing some other things he did find evidence of some damage including a rod that had been installed wrong way round on the crank. Ran ok but had evidence of a hard life, front disks were worn way past limits. He had a couple of replacements turned down from LandRover flywheels - top grade cast iron gave superb braking

Lol a mate from Lower Hutt , we met in about 1966 on 80cc Yamahas. Always admired his riding skills big talent. Rode to the 1970 Aussie 6 hour, took off the handlbar fairing on his CB 750 and put on some bars.Ran out of brakes and pitted but was gunna win it solo !
A group headed off to Sydney in about 68' I still had 3 mths to do on my apprenticeship so was delayed.
Craig got into some silly stuff and became a 501 couple of years ago. Lives Mangonui up Nrth.
Mystery man for sure !! I could write a book lol. (well I have, half way thru !).

Thanks for that. At that time here in the SI we were sharing race days with the cars.
In the long gaps between our races there was usually a group formed to talk - well, gossip would describe it better - and of course after that ride his name came up.
As I said, no one had heard of him. So we went back to asking Nev Landrebe about the US....

Dont know what standard K100 brakes were like, but these disks were really good. Probably illegal as not from an approved manufacturer. They were very well made and the only way you would now they were not a "off the shelf" part is that the threaded holes where the clutch cover bolted were still visible. And the light film of rust every morning, whcu went away with the first application of the brakes

"Two Wheels" did a feature about him after the 6 Hours, titled "A star out of nowhere", mentioning he was known in NZ as the "King of the Rimutaka hill"/
The story mentioned that he was unable to get replacement brake pads, the local distributor being unwilling to take them from a bike on the showroom floor, and that was the main reason for not winning. (Shit I wish my memory wculd recall useful stuff)

Shades of the Yamaha TX750's at the Aussie 6 hour. The factory bought the only one that finished straight out of the impound area.

Which is funny as even Honda tried pretty hard as they put on Alloy rims.
By all accounts the first wings were quite sporty more in the vein of a VFR than a modern goldwing/winnebago
from memory they cut some pretty decent top speeds and 1/4's

i phil carmen told me a few months ago he raced a gold wing and yes they wore through their pipes, before the race he went back home and had to weld all the pipes up to be allowed to race, he asked the other team how they got on on a gold wing and they said they simply bogged up the pipes, enough for scrutineering as as soon as they were on the track no one would know, imagine how much bog was littering the circuit

That's just depressing. Recently I was thinking about Bond, James Bond. I never much liked the movies but did like the books. In a recent conversation I mentioned Bond's car and the person to whom I was talking assumed I meant the Aston Martin DB4. Nah, that's the movie. In the early books Bond drove a vintage Bentley like those big green lorries that won LeMans in the thirties. That seems odd now but in the 1950s when Fleming wrote the first Bond books those cars were only about twenty years old and that's when cars tend to be at their lowest value. Of course, most of us would probably have to take out a mortgage to buy one of those pre-war Bentleys now.

Given that a lot of the membership of the VCC are now in their 70's and 80's I can understand why there are so many going for the more comfortable modern machinery, but still plenty willing to get the older machinery out, 200+ entries for this years Canterbury Branch pre-1932 vehicle Irishman's rally.
For context, anything 30 years old is Vintage Car Club eligible, so our Peugeot 306 cabriolet makes the list next year....

If you still had a running Cordia turbo it would get plenty of interest. The 80's cars are the current machines of interest, slowly catching up with the escalated values of the 60's & 70's machinery that the moneyed up young boomers and older Gen X have outbidding each other for

The British cars were terrible, OK mine was more worn out (a mate went to look at it and for some reason I bought it) but they all got rooted extraordinarily quickly because, ironically, they were made out of the shit metal that the jap crap cars were supposedly made of.
That said, the Cordia turbos probably all went up in flames along with their turbos.,

It's not everyones cup of tea but if i saw a red GS5500EX like my first new bike i'd be very tempted, got way better bikes but did 36000kms in 18 months on it and it was a fine machine, my next bike did everything better but it didn't have that place in my life as the GS did
I had a blue one, one of my least favourite bikes. Maybe coming after a couple of 2-stroke triples didn't help, but it simply was not fun to ride.
At the time I could have bought a low mileage GS1000E for the same money, which would have been the better buy. But I wanted a new one.

Interesting term, what is a wounder? Someone who self harms perhaps?

Equally it could be someone who wounds others. I'm imagining Chopper Read

Bot an optomistic seller yet, or even pessimistic but, what would be a fair price for a pair of Suzuki 1100s, one a 84 GS1100G and the other a 82 S1100GK.
Both are complete, run, have good seats, exhausts, tanks and side covers. Registrations on hold. Cosmetically ok but a long way from perfect. Also have a box of random spares including another engine lacking pistons or carbs. Getting too old (me) to finish

That's drawing a long bow. To be fair, neither were stand out bikes eg "Classics'' in the making. What were you thinking ballpark ?
The only 'classic' bike I have is a zero hour CR500R bike sitting in the back of my shed. Been there for over 22 years.
I know they are not classics, just old UJMs and not expecting anyhting like your cr500 would be worth. I know they are only worth what someone will pay for them, thats why I threw it out here, as it seems to be where somehat knowlegeable people comment on prices. I also know I cant take them with me.

Whatever you do, list them separately.
Ideally not at the same time. Not everyone wants two enormous bikes in the garage.
I got pretty good money for my 1100. Lordy, was that 20 year ago? Geez almost. Was a great tourer.

the value of those is largely in the rego year, $60 odd for a full year rego, none of this leave it on hold and miss a good day riding, GS's are good solid old gals too, someone will enjoy them

I dunno really. Not a self harm type though.
What does the collective reckon a 86 GSXR1100 is worth? Complete bike, tidy, all original.

I'm advised that a wounder is generally someone who likes old shit eg crap Mitsubishis.
Possibly some self- harm involved once the old shit is purchased

1st model. I'm no expert but if one fell into my hands I'd try auction it with 10k reserve. That was fairly ground (&bone) breaking bike, unlike a lot of the shite being touted as special price book.

Yeah, I kinda thought the same thing.

Polish polish, take it to a nice venue and take good pictures then write something honest with a decent description.
All the opposite of most of the features on this tread.
Good luck.

I'd want to think in running condition around 12k each - advertised separately. Those are great bikes.
If you ever let the '84 go for 6K it would be a steal.
Somewhere between the two maybe?

they say the paint isn't broken on that dent, looks like it is in two shots, if it isn't why does it look that way?

I seriously doubt that. Someone has made a good enough offer probably. Pity it's 'only' a 250. It does need rescue, but it won't be cheap.
