No idea what is LAMs, to old to care about that malarkey. Just know what obviously fails the criteria with mods.
Learner Approved Motorcycle
All sorts of interesting bikes on it, all the BSA range, Diesel Pig went through the process and got the Suzuki T350 added to it, the Beta300 range is also approved
https://www.nzta.govt.nz/driver-licences/getting-a-licence/licences-by-vehicle-type/motorcycles/lams/lams-approved-and-prohibited-motorcycles/
Any modification that increases power to weight ratio and it is no longer LAMs eligible although under 250cc are allowed full exhausts and tuning
There's also a fair few bikes I've seen advertised with obvious frame mods which should have certification

Yeah it's always been a larf that the NC35 is LAMs but the NC30 isn't. Obviously it fulfills the criteria of claimed power to weight ratio.

Ha! Beta 300RR approved, but my XTrainer with same engine but slightly lighter, not so. Actually with std pipe is about 1/2 the power.

I only did that because it annoyed me that when I had a looked through that same List for LAMS bikes it had T500s and T250s Listed and the T350 is right between those two in power to weight. So I e-mailed nzta to whinge and they e-mailed me back that if I could prove that, They would include it in the list. As I had the factory manual for it, I scan the Title page and spec page e-mailed them to the nzta. When they e-mailed me to let me know it was on the list I was so pleased I printed out the e-mail, framed and hung it above where I park my T350.

Government agencies are often fun to play with, A while ago I laid a complaint with the advertising standards authority as there was an advert saying '30% of all men suffer from premature ejaculation'
Basically I said it was anything but suffering, after all when you're eyes are rolling back in your head, your toes are curled up and you're pumping population paste it is anything but suffering.
Got a letter back saying my complaint had been upheld and advert removed.
I was the first of a few to complain about the same advert, it was for another reason it was withdrawn however.

I think this is what 'those listings' had in mind when they figured they could do similar and started unbolting large chunks off their clunker.
Then they typically run out of competence.

I watched battletruck the other week, that CX reminds me of the bike in it
It also had cliff from cheers in it as some post apocalyptic macgyver/a team fabricator.
I remember my father made a model of the truck from some sort of traveling thing that went with the movie release premiers.

Festidious regular tank draining and cleaning is the only answer to an 80's Suzuki that goes outdoors at all.

The weather is occasionally mildly controversial in Taranaki. A few years back New Plymouth recorded the highest sunshine hours which must have come as a surprise to those in the corridors of power. They said the figures were wrong and ordered the measuring equipment replaced. Next year, with shiny new equipment, New Plymouth again recorded the highest number of sunshine hours. Nature's way of showing the middle finger?

Lol I have a mate who's a retired boffin ,he loves data. He put a rain gauge on my fence to collect data.
I'm close to Lake Horowhenua and the weather is totally different to where we were before, close to the Tararuas (rural) Levin.
Another mate is close to where we were and our rainfall here is always about one third of the old place.
Haha, messes with Mr Boffins head !!!!!!!!!!!

There is a weather station high on Mt Taranaki that completes with one high up a gorge inland from kowhiterangi for the most rainfall each year.

Paul Smarts Imola winning 900SS? Or the thing that won Daytona built by Phil Schilling and Cook Neilsen? (the cooler of the two, no doubt)? I dunno, man. How is it different from an equivalent year 900SS? cast wheels vs spoked but the motors the same? Or is it like those 748/749R where the motors were sandcast and came with Ti rods and valves and were built in the race shop? I have no clue, as you can likely tell.

Some people get caught up in their own emotions on what a value is. Or what they think it should be.
That price is very interesting considering the price on this one.
https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/classic-vintage/ducati/listing/5227920973
In total they made about 7200 MHRs
From what I seen they made about 16000 sports classics.
Neither really float my boat.
Give me a 851/888 anyday. They only made about 3200 ish of these.
I thought it was 5k but what ever it is it was smaller then the number of RC30's built so go figure how one of those si worth more then a 1990 SP2 ho,olgation special that was only one of less then 400
The made about 400 Green frame 750ss which are highly prized.
Which is what I think makes people think somehow all Ducatis are collectors items sure to be worth zillions in the future.

I had one exactly the same as my first "big" roadbike. It was significantly quicker than my mates CB400N. I paid $3000 for mine slightly second hand out of Wellington Motorcycles in late 81.
I religiously look at "Classic and Vintage" but i am not drawn to stuff that I had back in the day... I want stuff that I didnt get beck then. I have never owned a DOHC CB750/900/1100 for example. Or a GPz900

I cant remember exactly how it went but there was a story of him falling of a bike in the the Euro MX series where he crashed off and ran into his team mate and he was that angry that he took off on his team mates bike by mistake, and rode like a demon got back to second of something only to be black-flagged for not having his own bike.

if you look at the 888 ducatis they have a position for a kick starter, The original design was for a 350 and 500cc belt drive aircooled 2 valve twin. While I am sure they might have recycled some parts, the life expectancy of an early 851 crankcase bored to full oversize and having its nuts revved off is far less than 300 km. Lots of early engines never even lasted a race. I know at least some Corse cases were sandcast; they went back to this again with later R engines.
This does not in itself not make them stronger ,but is cheaper method of making heavier designs and faster changers.
Later 888 models (1990 SP2) and onward are stronger but still not strong enough. The 916 is better, and the 996 is better again. Later deep sumps are better still. From memory, Cathcart was at times using one case per meeting on the tricolor kit bike, which is why it was almost brand new when he sold it. As even with his special relationship with the factory he could get all the cases he needed.
Every iteration was ever so slightly different, according to Rankin, with webbing and changes as the factory tried to make them work within the confines of the limitations of the molds and tooling they had. Also, the design, although better than the non-Mille bevels, still resembles a significant compromise, as it has outer roller bearings under preload, which places loads on the case. The Supermono had plain bearings all around as an attempt to show what could be done with the next engine; Bordi had hoped to make the 916 like this, but they couldn't afford the new tooling. The rollers also limit the material and space they have to add material compared to plain main bearings. Remember the ducks have the two small outer outrigger bearings as well to stop the crankflap. if you look at the Ducati or even a old pommy parallel twin you can see why they need outrigger bearings.
Two years ago, Superbike Ducatis regularly broke the main bearings out of their cases, making one-race-percase the rule if 11,000 rpm was used often. The cases were later reinforced.
actory Ducatis employ relatively heavy, Austrian-made Pankl con> rods in steel. There have been occasional failures of the very heavily loaded rod bolts, for the Austrians don’t yet make use of the multi-phase steels pioneered by the U.S. firm SPS. Multi-phase steels not only have extremely high tensile strengths, but they also have high elongation before failure-they stretch before they break. This means it takes a lot of extra energy to break them. Eraldo Ferracci uses American-made steel Carrillo rods and bolts in the engines he builds for Doug Polen, and has never had a rod or a bolt fail-even in cases of piston break-up.
Kevin Cameron Daytona 1992
COntrast this with Slight on the works RC45
People think in a factory team you just bolt stuff in and out but we didn’t. Everything had a life. We didn’t just bolt engines in and out. You might pull down an engine and even re-use the same rods and pistons, just put new rings and valves in. We never used a whole new engine all at once. It had an optimum running time and was changed accordingly. It amazed me. I used to think well, you’ve got the engine apart, you might as well use new parts in it. There was no rule against it. But they didn’t. They were like, well, it’s run in now, might as well keep using it. Leave it alone. But because we were using a different gearbox every weekend, and that meant the cases had to be split, the engine was apart all the time. You could’ve put anything in it you wanted to.
356217356221
While it's true the crankcase design goes back to the pantah. The gearbox centers were moved after the first pre 851 748ie as the 748 had to have a rather weak 6 speed to fit in the extra ratios I think they keep these centers and widths with some later bikes, Maybe the 350/400 six speeds. (edit seems to be 600/750's these were reused in the 800 series too according to BradB)I have never questioned why, but I know The belt 750 cases at least up to the mid 90's don't fit the std 900/851/916 6 speed. (edit you can used the 6 speed from the 696/796/800.in the 600/750 5 speed cases)
looking into it The gearbox it seems was moved for to reasons the swing of the crank being one.
This kind of reuse old shit designs is not restricted to old pommy twins and shitty Ducati's have a look at almost any MF tractor up to the 1980 an you can see TEA ferguson DNA.
Not to mention the venerable VW, 350 chev 6 cylinder and 308 Holden etc etc.
The Desmoquattro engine itself, with the valve spacing originally designed as a 748ie, (which evolved to the 851 that won the Daytona Bott around 86?87?) designed by bordi and migoni (sp)
places the valves too close together which limits the valve size able to be used when used in a bigger bore engine, leading to the engines having to use almost two-valve timing. Plus, greater revs are needed to make enough power. It is said that later 996 works bikes had wider-spaced valves and special rockers, but I have never seen photographic proof.

My SP2 has the AA spec cams the are rather too much for the road even for a lot of tracks. Unless you are a works class rider. You can spend $$$$ chasing that last few HP.
If you have a look at the 748SPS you can see why the top ends were so short lasting

He's also mentioned previously he was one of those that cajoled Dallas into putting the speedway headed version back together.
That said I never picked up they deleted the flywheel and used the cover as a form of Brace??)
This makes sense now as F&F ran a ignition trigger on the clutch hub and a 900SS ignition this is possible as early Ducatis have a 2:1 primary later ones are 1.8:1
They removed the alternator, cut off the end of the crankshaft and made a replacement outer cover-plate to strengthen the most stressed side of the crankcases.

Even more damming is according to the renyolds guy Ken Sprayson .All Norton featherbeds were made at renyolds as Norton never had the facilities to weld frames.
No idea of where the manx ones were made but I guess they would have brazing facilities...
okay edit
All Featherbed frames from Jan. 1951 to 1970 were made at Reynolds Tube Co. in two basic versions, Manx & road, the only alteration to the Manx being the shortening & welding on of the rear subframe in '53/'54. They were made in 531 tubing of 1 /1/4" & 3/4" both 16 gauge & bronze welded. Frames for Inters were as Manx but made from A grade mild steel, & had a flat on the top tube to clear the taller engine. The road frames were made from B grade mild steel tube but in 14 gauge, all arc welded, & had a reduction in bend radius under the seat tube to give more room for road equipment. The only differences being alterations to mounting points for various engines.
All frames had a headstock angle of 64 deg./26 deg. as this was never changed.
Note there was bolt on subframes and slimline wideline version each frame had over 40Ft of tubing. 10Ft of bronze welding wire.
The original works frames were made by the Norton works were not well equipped so the sif-bronze welding was undertaken by the McCandless brothers who produced the eight frames for the racing team by hand.
On the wiki page I found this you have to love Easter eggs.

I have a Sprayson article somewhere as well as one of the mccadless bross they made a few prototype frames for Norton one for a four which I think had a car engine and one with a monocoque subframe.
As it would have been a fabrication jig, Renyolds would have made there own production jigs.
But you can see why the pom's failed when the cream of the crop don't the brazing facilities.
I have a feeling they were sidecar racers or owned a garage?
much like BSA not racing the MC1 and they needed to guarantee to management that it would win its first race

Interestingly, Norton didn't have the facility to produce the Featherbed frame themselves, nor could Reynolds (the tubing mf'r), so Rex brought his own jigs over from Ireland, and personally built the Works Norton frames from 1950-53 (that original jig, as it exists today, can be seen in the pic below - what a historic piece of scrap iron!).

They were all old shit pampered by 40hp engines and bakelite tyres.
No mystery, just slightly better than worse shite.
I sound like I've been drinking, but honest.
We had a crew at the dyno, mate of a mate, but one of the bikes they had on, something special. But the frame had a squashed tube at the front and looked agricultural. British stuff of that era was bent gaspipe.
Saw them later in a mag going to Classic IOM.
Pity year or a few before one of the riders got killed there. Him and his Dad were nice guys.

I haven't seen him on KB for a few years malcy25 was Alister and Kerry was I cant rememeber?
Its a similar price to other similar era 851 SP's I have seen, plus more realistic than a RC30 price appears to be now ,and far rarer. (the OW01)

the RZ250R hes selling is a minter aswell, that fzr is cool but meh... having said that the RC30 theres 2 in Oz at 100k and one at 110k in rothmans markings... well spose the FZR is way beter bang for buck... that said this is also 40k and a fraction of the bike the FZR is but id prefer it as fucked as the price is. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/classic-vintage/honda/listing/5341181335

there were a lot less OW01's than RC30s made as well. according to Gooooooogle 500 Yamaha vs 5000 Honda
I kind of thought i had said that?
I hope to have my 851SP2 (1990)on the road for summer 2027 (380 made).. I posted a while back that Honda had made more RC30 than all of the Ducato 851 888's stradas and all. So its kind of perverse that a RC30's are then worth more? Same as the OW01's Should be on par or worth more than a RC30.
that said I am surprised its only 500 especially has Aussie got 26 and the UK 150 odd?
that said off google
https://www.cyclenews.com/2023/04/article/archives-column-1989-yamaha-ow01/
guss as the OW01 never won a championship unlike the RC30 and 851?
.When launched in 1989, the Honda and Yam were poles apart price-wise, with the Yam a whopping £12,749 and the RC30 £8499. By 1991 the Honda cost £11,337 and the Yamaha a princely £14,816. A lot of the price differential was made up in the race kits. As standard the Yam had more trick bits on it, so the race kit cost around £2500 compared to £8500 for the Honda
Despite only 500 OW01s being made between 1989 and the end of 1992, Pete reckons he’s had ‘around 50’ of this total. And of that 500, only 140 or so were imported into the UK.

Yeah, the OW is mine. It's parked next to my TZ750 and TZ350!
I don' have an RZ250R for sale DD!
The OW01 is cooler than RC30's - they're the thinking mans bike not the "me too"buyers bike
Google is wrong about how many built. the 500 quoted was year one for Homologation. They built more in 90, 91 and 92. I think about 2000 or so. Most have been rolled bowled and arseholed. I'd estimate 2000.
There's multiple different yamaha Model codes depends on country , germany, UK, Swiss even( had a rectangular single head light, eek!, as did the 916!) , JDM.
I think they only made about 500 RC45's .
The Rc30's are very "Honda" the Yamaha is quite raw in comparison. I go a bone for one after Scott Buckley passed me at Ruapuna in jan 93 laying rubber and then popping and banging like a bastard on the over run into the next left. I was on my RS125 Honda on the open practice before the GP meeting. He'd bought the BP bike that Chris Haldane had broyght back from the US.

Ducati got their shit together and spoiled the party in that respect. I think the Yam proved to be a better bike in WSBK through 90-92 than the Honda. Honda riders were moaning from about 1990 about lack of speed .
V&H got over 150hp from their OW's at the end. The story goes that they blew a rod out the front of the cases on the dyno. RaNg Yamaha with a" WTF , those are Ti rods". Yamaha said "how many HP?" V&H said " >150hp". Yamaha said "we only designed for 150 - never thought anyone would get near that!"

Honda only would have had only one if Ducati had have turned up to NZ and Tadozzi on the yam fz powered Bimotas had have not fallen off in the rain here the same year.89?
If Yamaha had of added the flat slides I think they would have been competitive longer.
Greg always said you could make a Yam 5 valve fast or accelerate but not both. iI you had a high comp it spoiled the combustion shape t never rev'ed as the shape need too much advance.Awesome in std trim on the road though.p
Pretty sure Doohan embarrassed everyone on one at Aussie just berore HRC picked him up. Gobert and corserwas able to win/nearly win a championship on RC30 just before the RC45 arrived against t well supported Ducatii Aussie team (Fraser's) but that RC30 was very special and not maybe 100% legal. (the Same as Gobert)
funniest fact I can think of about OW01's is Tony Rees has been around now that long he was racing them new....

Mick never raced an OW. They didn’t arrive until after he left to Honda, but Scott did later on. Mick destroyed everyone on the old FZR.
The Aussie last hurrah of the Rc30 was the Winfield bikes and they were seriously trick, lot of work.
Yeah, Tony and I have talked a bit about the OW’s. Told me earlier this year about getting his. Raced it pretty well much with not a lot of work at all.
The UK in the early 90s I found out a while back to compete with the ducatis , a lot of the four cylinder bikes like the OW and ZXR were actually more like 840cc! Gentlemen’s agreement they wouldn’t protest each other🤣
Stock carbs are the same basically as the FZR1000 and later the TRX850 actually. I can’t remember whether the last OWs had FCRs or just allowed to use. A mate has one with them.
‘Twas 88 at Manfeild that a Bimota was laying on its side at splash on the warm up lap of the last race. I got a photo just after and that was the only year I made it there.

yeah full engines RVF F1 spec straight from Japan but with Std type carbs.
looking on Google Corser was ran a RC30 for a part of the following year as well.
Lots of protests over airbox etc which is hilarious as the Ducati Corse airbox is 100% different then the SP airbox.

I remember there used to be a lot of arguments over carb stuff. and over fork eligibility.
plenty of honda converted race bikes like hawk bros used to use RC kit carb internals as well I do recall the kawak had FCR
I think there was a later on rule that the carbs had to cost under X $ as one crowd was offering 12k kit carbs?
Kawasaki's def had flat slides later on, as did I think the later GSXR?

that crash wasn't an accident the word was that bimota couldn't actually supply the paperwork with valid engine and frame numbers for the 200 manufactured bikes they were supposed to produce, and if they finished the race and scored points the protest would have been lodged.
