That poor bike, shame I can't buy it cheap and rescue it from his butchering. Wonder if that's why there's so few GN's going about, cunts like this knob trying to "Bobber" them.

And yet it 'sits comfortably at 130km/h' - I'd like to see that! It must be the new carb, as standard ones fall somewhat short of that.
Also, watch out for the fork 'gators' - they might bite...

Straight from google:
A café racer (/ˈkæf reɪsər/ kaf-ray-sər or less commonly /ˈkæfi ˌreɪsər/ ka-fi-ray-sər) is a light-weight, lightly-powered motorcycle optimized for speed and handling rather than comfort — and optimized for quick rides over short distances.

The bikes were modified (stripped to bare essentials) for short races between cafe's (Cafe being another term for "Drinking Establishment). The resulting power to weight ratio helped increase speed. No set maximum speed ... just the faster the better.
Looking the part ... like the racers of the time ... was a bonus.
These wankers need some history.
Perhaps ... as do you.

In the 1950/60's apparently 'the ton' (ie 160 kmph) was really really fast.
Add a can of redbull to the tank of your GN250 and you may hit it.
Are we not blessed with excessive amounts of reliable horsepower now.

The origional Cafe racer culture was about going fast and looking good, they were for the time fast road bikes stripped into racing trim, thats why the quientesential cafe bikes were BSA Gold Stars and Tritons and SS Nortons.
Later on especially with the American influence in the 70's it was solely about looking cool.
The factories responded to the popularity of this movement by producing such bikes as the Rocket Gold Star and the Continental GT. Plus numerous other Ducatis.

looking good compared to some idealised template, is what all cutural movements are about.
Cafe racers was about looking good while going fast, as well as at a standstill.

Trade meis littered with examples that haven't sold. I think others just go back in the garage as the owner is too stubborn to admit reality, or in the hope that one day a GB400 is worth $6000. Then that'll prove him right. He'll be able to tell everyone how right he was. Yeah.
Two years later his wife sez - you haven't ridden that bike for years, I thought you were going to sell it. I should have married your brother you arseplumber. The kids are all his. Honda owner. Mum warned me.

Exhaust air filter and re jet would net you a fair amount of hp. What do they ride like? I was wondering if a 400 is a viable option for the bit of riding in between my 250 and a 600. It seems like a good mix of power and economy.

It was a 750 with 900 cases for the 6 speed gearbox (in at least one incarnation), racing in F2 class beating the TZ250's it used to have a bit of nitro as well. which was legal at the time, pretty sure it was housed in a old Ducati F1 frame.
Robert Holden's class was i think more the key to its success. Along with Dicks prep work.
Pretty sure it was measured after a Robert Taylor protest in the mid nineties.
Pretty sure Robert (taylor)was instrumental with getting the nitro banned as well, he was certainly pretty vocal about it.
The 851 steve roberts framed BMS with mechanical injection was i believe a full liter many years before Ducati got even close.

you have to put a bit of effort in: some pipe wrap, some cans of spraypaint, fuck up the seat and dont forget to ruin the handling. You can safely ignore stupid pointless stuff like engine condition, oil changes or maintenance because its just gonna get parked outside a trendy bar by a hipster

I still own my Street Triple which is all I actually need in a road bike. Its also a better and more modern bike than either of the ones you mention. In fact I owned an SV650 and have ridden an RC31 a bit as a riding buddy had one.
The problem I have with riding the street trip is that I give into temptation way too easily. .... so I was looking for something to bop about town on. If the SR400 had say 45 hp it would be fine. My CB400F would have thrashed it. Maybe I should just STFU and get one of them again.

I always just had a warm memories of the Bros/Hawk sweet little bike, much underated.
I am warming up an Aircooled RD350 at the moment in TZ style, i think it shouldn't be fast enough to endanger, me too much.
I just want something fun light and different at half rego. It should be safe enough with modern tires and brakes suspension
45 hp is possible with the SR they have quite a cult following in Japan. 35 is more realistic in the mode you wish to ride it in though.
Grumph will tell you how much that would cost. likely not that much, as it has few of everything.

Well, down here last weekend at Levels there were several that appeared to handle pretty good. One won pre 82 junior doing lap times which made me wonder why no one tried one on alky or nitro in period for F2....I seem to remember the 600 being the weapon of choice in Junior Production and there don't seem to be many chassis differences 550/600.
Oh and the 650 bros needs cams, a decent pipe and headwork to turn it into something close to a SV650. I did a conversion kit for them and did about 7 or 8 of the bastard things.

They weren't F3 legal in period anyway. The trouble is that all the versions of that oddball motor weigh the same. Tony McMurdo actually had a 400 and looked at boring it etc for F3. Too heavy. From memory the 400 had a 6 speed box - which doesn't swap into the 650.

I subscribe to Performance Bikes and they do project bikes. They did a TL1000R over about a year. rebuilt the motor (moar power and a Nova gearbox) , complete front end swap (a BPF GSXR1000 front end complete), Ohlins or Nitron rear shock, and some fairly radical weight saving. I hate the big bulbous arse ends on these (and SRAD GSXR's too) and just putting a different tail on it shed 20kg (visually anyway). If I was doing it it would end up owing me $25k but it turned into what Suzuki could have built if they kept developing it.
I am sort of keen because i have got the SR400* out of my system and am currently thinking seriously about a VTR1000SP1 or 2.
*I like, but 500km is enough to make me certain I dont want to keep it. Gonna cost me some money but oh well....its been a good year.

It would be interesting to see all right. The TLR has identical HP and torque, but it's 12kgs heavier. That would have to be a great shock, because the Sachs in the Aprilia is not a bad shock, and the Ohlins model is even better.
And I always thought the TL-s had 125HP and the TL-R had 135HP... must be that extra pork on the R that kills the poke.

I always liked the tlr, I had an RSVR with full Harris system and twin cans but reckon the tl sounded better. A mate had the s and that thing was scary when pushed on challenging roads, very easy to completely loose it. Would still like to own the a tlr but that thing looks well weathered and to be fair, out of its time now, especially for that money

Once followed a chap on one who was pushing a TL on the Akaroa GP, was bloody scary watching the way it took a corner, was relatively easy to sit behind him on my GIXXER 600 thinking "Fuck I am glad I am not riding that bike" That said the rider could just have been shit.
I do have a hankering for a big twin, been debating a SV1000 for many moons as a 2 up bike for me and the Mrs to float about on.
