I can't recall seeing a Ducati powered sidecar outfit here.

Couple of years back a 900 cambelt engine powered speedway sidecar turned up at the "Day in the Dirt" Talking to the owner it was an older chair repowered for BEARS and twins meetings. Neither of which I knew existed in speedway...
It went quite well too. He'd had no problems with it - but only running for a few minutes at a time, you wouldn't expect to.
He was keen on selling it at the time as he wanted a more competitive "modern" outfit. Never seen it again.

They managed to describe a four door "coupe" (go figure) 1300 four speed fiat with silver painted steel wheels, a Haynes manual and some English made spot lamps screwed to the bumper as "desirable options"
https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/fiat/auction-2203148139.htm
They pulled "est 1911" out of their arses too, the company was formed in 2012 & is Australian owned.

I had a four door coupe, a Volkswagen CC.
Mind you that 128 fails the original the original definition of coupe - "cut", ie a cut or sloping rear roofline.

I thought the 860GT was the ugliest...the GTS had a bit more shape to it.

Some one in the add is a little confused though as the 900 is the same capacity as the 860....864cc. the 900 was just a badge exercise.

Dad bought one in '78 near new from Aussie. Had it three weeks. Some guy arrived from Wellington with a pile of cash and rode it away....apparently Dad spent 45 minutes trying to get it started with that stupid kick start after a late shift one night and was enough....the electric starter even less help.

A nice 90/6 with twin discs replaced it.

Yeah, there are. I think there's enough evidence now to prove that buying a cheap one - and trying to race it cheaply - is a good way to get hurt.
They're tyre sensitive - brand and condition - and need to be kept up to scratch in the suspension too.
A number of people have seen how cheap they have been and thought - what a good way to go pre 89 racing...

I suspect they already are.

My brother bought one off my neighbor a few years back, a reasonable price then was around $2.5k, so if that one sells for asking then they've obviously bottomed and on the way back up.

Very nice machine to ride, even for someone as old as me who doesn't bend as well as he used to, and more than enough horsies to keep me amused.

Ducati used to have a clear strip in the fiberglass tank.

WMP were afaik the last to be still using them they were meant to go this year, might just get translated into mandarin instead now.
even the 180000ltr silos still had them.

I particularly like the tool roll that will smack the front guard at 1" travel. Or the kickstarter that denotes the correct swears to use while trying to start that POS. (the other side says King Jesus).

that's not a tool roll, it's for carrying his "bag for life"

A Classic is when your mate hits on some chick at the bar but she turns around and it's his sister.

A Vintage has something to do with wine, but in most households it's drunk within 24hr of purchase.
But I stock up when there's specials so it could be weeks, or up to 2 weeks old.

Glad to sort that out for you.

To me, two drum brakes means classic, I asked a mate 20 odd years my junior, what he thought denotes classic, he said anything air cooled. If I asked my dad he may say anything with leather belt drive.
Classic is something you remember being modern in your lifetime, vintage is something that was old when you were born.

Good definition.
I go on the odd Vintage Car Club Motorcycle section and even on a 45 year old BMW its considered Modern by the old boys as they remember them new.
Just sold my 53 Triumph Thunderbird today, can't really say I'll miss it and its vibrating 650 engine.

I feel like that bike in paticular is an absolute steal & still fairly handy.I owned that bike for a year or so . An older gentle man bought it ex Japan with about 7000 km on the clock in 2004 . I picked it up in 2016 with only extra 2000 km!! All original, a couple of small cracks on the fairing. A stonker of a bike goes fast , stops better, New tyres handled great. Classic 80's . I Got it cause i thought I might get the wife on the back. We did she did but not really a 2 up cruiser . Sold it to guy in south island, he classic rac2d it may be once, then he tried to sell it still with racing bottles etc on it. The guy selling it now is in ak not as in good as nic as when I had it but aside from a few laps a genuine bike.

The Cali will be nice when it's done. No postwar Sunbeam is worth that much. The old man - qualified enginer - had one for as long as it took to sort the problems. Then got shot of it saying, yes, it was as bad as reputation said. Ran a 250 BMW for years - faster and better handling than the Sunbeam.

The old drum brakes were shit - I used to get caught out commuting daily on a modern Honda with discs .. and riding classics in the weekend.

What caught me out was going hot into a corner on an old BSA or Triumph - and remembering too late that the brakes were shit .. and certainly did not work as well as the discs.

Standing hard on everything and banging down the gears to make the bike stop - then having the let the brakes go because there was NO WAY the bike would lean under braking .. put a lot of scratch marks on mufflers ...

I never dropped it - but came close a couple of times - also had my anal muscles working over time ..

Classics are OK - but there are reasons why we don't ride them any more .

Is it worth this much? Ok I think it will appreciate. If it was the forefather of a continuing range of hub bikes then 100%. As a dead end. . . And such an ugly one at that.
. Maybe not.

I rode one 15 odd years back a survivor of some Polytech that bought it as a trainer but clearly a poor choice.
It was great. I considered trying to buy it as a tourer. Was put off by thought a light crash would be major parts search headache. Bought an RF instead that was only marginally more ugly if far less competent.

Needed a de-cat and ideally a large diet.

Any other example, and I'd agree with you. But I know a guy that would pay nearly that much for one of those in good reliable nick.

I'd buy an RM250. Remove Base gasket and 3-Bond. Reshape head and buy a Lectron. More power and better spread than a PE or an RM and still period. Add a flywheel weight and lights with Li battery and LED bulbs.
Spend remainder on suspension

Competitive VMX and Vinduro bike with more value and less garage space .

All that really needs changing are the handlebars. And the price. Oh and pull the motor to bits to get the barrels coloured black or back to aluminium. And all the other bits that are red. Actually while it is in bits put stock length forks on it. Oh and get some rear shocks an inch or so longer. I'd lose the front controls too... midmount FTW.

So, yes, a few minor tweaks and you've got yourself a cool-ish old Hardly Ferguson. I reckon for $11k it would be a good buy.

There was an early trials Honda owned locally. Can't say what model but the thing I liked most was that it had been built by HRC and the engine casings were marked accordingly. Apparently the trial bikes were built by HRC for a time. That'd be one of the few ways to get a genuine HRC bike without mortgaging the house.

F5 Dave
30th July 2019, 12:58
Yeah they had to get a bit serious later on to be 1/2 way competitive . There was a tie up with Montessa and indeed you could buy parts from your *onda dealer. HRC didn't exist back in those days of the old 2 valvers.

F5 Dave
30th July 2019, 20:15
This would maybe be worth it, if it was pristine rather than completely manky making me question its supposedly little use. It will need crank rebuild and seals at the very least. You don't get away with leaving them.

Hello Engine... The whole reason for doing the bike was because I wanted a Unit/Magneto conversion motor. There is only only a handful around and no one would sell me theirs. So I made my own (there’s a ton of earlier posts on that process)
The crank is a Bonneville with a light flywheel, @dirtyshirtrichter saved the thrashed one I had, grinding the journals and dynamically balanced it. Later Rods and a Johnson mild race cam with a small valve head from a 63 TR6. 10:1 forged pistons. Black diamond valves with a N.O.S Webco spring kit. Crankcases were updated to the post 1970 breather arrangement. The rebuilt Lucas Competition Mag was supplied by @britishswapper Couldn’t have done this without the help of John Ireland who let me raid his parts bins, stood over my shoulder and told my I was nuts but always knew the best way to go about things. I’m sure he’s taught me everything I know, but not everything he knows.

1,800 Vintage Motorcycles Headed for Auction in Florida
An unbelievable 1,800 vintage motorcycles — all belonging to one man — will be auctioned off by J. Wood & Company in a giant three-day event, March 13-15, 2018, in Ocala, Florida. “This is the largest single consignor motorcycle collection that’s ever been offered at a no-reserve auction that I know of,” says auctioneer Jerry Wood. “The largest amount are late 1960s and early 1970s Japanese machines, but there are lots of early Superbikes including a lot of single cam K0 and K1 Honda CB750s.” The collection includes a great many British bikes as well, including a 1973 Triumph Hurricane showing an indicated — and believed original — 510 miles.

According to Wood, the owner’s father was in the motorcycle business decades ago selling BSA, Triumph and Norton. When Honda came along, he started selling them, as well. In 1978 the family moved to Ocala and opened Earl’s Cycle Center. “Earl Jr. loved the motorcycles, but Earl Sr. was there to tell him ‘you can’t keep them all.’ After Earl Sr. passed away in 1998, Earl Jr. started taking motorcycles that he took in trade home with him. He also attended auctions and bought everything he could afford,” Wood says.

Wood says the bikes range in condition from very good to project/salvage, and the collection also includes a huge inventory of NOS parts and “literally tons” of used parts. Wood says that many of the bikes are jammed into sheds, trailers and storage containers on the owner’s property, with many ultimately left outside.
It’s hard to predict results without having seen the bikes firsthand (potential bidders will be able to examine the collection March 11 and 12), but odds are this auction will generate every bit as much interest as J. Wood’s wild 2015 auction in Cuba, Missouri, one of the biggest horde of old bikes ever auctioned prior to the upcoming Ocala auction.

I haven't taken one for a ride but I quite fancy a Royal Enfield Interceptor, appeal to the inner cheapskate and harks back to when you had one bike that had to do everything. I don't need more than 50 BHP as that's all my Commando and R80ST have and I've toured two up on both.

How about only one bike for every type of riding? I mean Trail bikes make dirt riding fun and difficult terrain possible, but proper knobblies are evil on tarmac.

And Trials is really calling out for a dedicated bike despite being offroad as well.

And what if you wanted to go for a frenzied back road scratch? I mean you couldn't be expected to take your humble GSX. You'd be compelled to use a GSXR. It's only sensible.

You're preaching to the choir buddy. Having said that even adjusting for inflation Super recipients get back way more than they put in... what is that if not welfare?

I can't tell you how many people I know who (especially in the first few years say age 65 to 70) are comfortably earning a couple hundy k a year and not ONE of them has ever said "Yeah, I wont be claiming the Super I dont need it". I know one guy who drove his fucking Rolls Royce to the WINZ office to sign up for it.

It is unsustainable in the medium term, it is mostly about boomer greed, and yes I am arguing against self interest but: it needs to be means tested and it needs to have the age increased to 68 at least. REmember who is going to end up funding this shit - your kids.

Of course as a country we had an opportunity in the 1970's to have a self funding scheme which (like Straya) could have been the backbone of future prosperity (like Straya) but that cunt Muldoon scuppered it in a fit of political pique. That fucker caused about as much damage as Pol Pot.

How Muldoon threw away NZ's wealth
Sir Robert Muldoon painted Labour's fledgling super scheme as a step on the way to turning New Zealand into a Soviet clone.
A dreadful political decision, announced on December 15, 1975, transformed New Zealand from the potential Switzerland of the Southern Hemisphere into a low-ranking OECD economy.
Without this decision we would now be called "The Antipodean Tiger" and be the envy of the rest of the world. We would have a current account surplus, one of the lowest interest-rate structures in the world and would probably rank as one of the top five OECD economies.
We would still own ASB Bank, Bank of New Zealand and most of the other major companies now overseas-owned. Our entrepreneurs would have a plentiful supply of risk capital and would probably own a large number of Australian companies.
Most New Zealanders would face a comfortable retirement and would be the envy of their Australian peers. The Government would have a substantial Budget surplus and we would have one of the best educational and healthcare systems in the world.
What destroyed this potential on December 15, 1975?
That was the day Robert Muldoon, the newly elected Prime Minister, announced the abolition of the 37-week-old compulsory New Zealand Superannuation Scheme, introduced by the previous Labour Government.
* After a short phase-in period contributions were 8 per cent of gross income, 4 per cent by employees and 4 per cent by employers.
* The scheme was not taxable except for stamp and cheque duties.
* Contributors could receive a lump-sum payment up to one-quarter of the value of their individual fund on retirement with the rest distributed as income on a regular basis. It appears the lump-sum payments were tax free but the regular income was subject to normal income tax.
here is little doubt the abolition of the Superannuation Scheme was our worst economic decision over the past 40 years. The economy would be in a much stronger position today had the far-sighted scheme stayed.
The scheme would now be worth more than $240 billion based on the following assumptions:
* An annual contribution of 8 per cent for every employee.
* A balanced portfolio of 50 per cent invested in New Zealand Government bonds and 50 per cent in the New Zealand sharemarket.
* Annual returns based on the performance of Government bonds and the NZX benchmark index.
* Two per cent of the fund withdrawn every year for retirees.
The $240 billion figure is conservative as no dividends are taken into account until 1995, offshore returns were higher over the past 30 years and no account is taken of the ability of investment managers to outperform the benchmark indices.
New Zealand would have led the world in terms of savings. Based on the $240 billion projection each worker would have $111,200 of superannuation assets compared with $6300 at present and A$74,400 ($86,821) in Australia.

Wrong. You can be on unemployment/sickness/invalids or the DPB for your entire life up to 65. All of which are taxed.
Once you hit that magic figure you transfer to Superannuation.

Two reasons: strength (as already posted)

Stainless steel fasteners have about 1/3rd the strength of high tensile steel (grade 12.9 is the good stuff)

Second reason is galvanic corrosion. Stainless in direct contact with aluminium will slowly but surely cause the ally to get attacked.

high tensile steel (grade 12.9 is the good stuff)

AS I understand it, the higher the tensile strength, the more brittle/less malleable the fastener will be.

I met a guy who'd been in the industry for years, many years ago when one of my bikes had a habit of breaking sprocket bolts. He cautioned against using 12.9's as they were more brittle.....and a good 8.8 in most situations is fine. He also cautioned against using zinc plated bolts as they can create a torqueing issue, as the zinc will add drag and while you may tighten to a measured x fl/lbs the clamping force created by the bolt will be less. He suggested non plated bolts, of 8.8 tensile and 243 Loctite to help lube and add a slight amount of shock absorbing capability or lightly oiled and a reasonable torque setting of c 20ft/lb on a M8 bolt

Bolts were breaking or coming loose in one to two races, yet they were lock tabbed etc. The lack of clamping force was not matting the sprocket against the hub well, compounded by a 6mm alloy spacer behind the sprocket, which was causing tension to subside..... (Sprockets don't carry the force in shear!). Got the clamping aspect sorted and the problem went away....

Interesting. I've not heard that about zinc before - I'd have thought the opposite, the zinc would make a relatively soft bearing surface on steel etc and thus actually help correct torquing. Perhaps the zinc then flows away under high pressure, thus reducing the clamping force? Or the zinc shreds in the last phase of tightening, hence the torquing issue? Curious.

Agree with lightly oiled or 243 Loctite (formulated to same viscosity as light oil), clean threads, no dirt, no bent or bashed threads, should be able to twirl a fastener home between finger and thumb or else something's wrong.

Your alloy spacer: I take it that this was alloy contacting a steel sprocket? I've tended to find that alloy on alloy grips really well, the metal bonds together... alloy on steel doesn't, it forms a bearing pair instead and things slip.

I've certainly seen every fastener in the vicinity of a brakepad turn dusty black - permanently - in a very short time. The brown might just be very thin passivation on the stock fasteners - I'm sure the factory were placing large orders to a strict price point and the vendor had to survive somehow.
