It's not good news for the wee white rocket (or not so rocket as what would have seemed to have contributed to the issue at hand).... looking at a top end rebuild now as one of the piston heads is damaged, but the concern then is that if the top gets rebuilt the bottom will get stressed and so why don’t we do that at the same time?

Good question I asked, why we don’t do that at the same time... so I'm waiting on prices now, good times... good times.

I would be looking at purchasing something else in the 250cc range OR wait till you have your full license & buy something bigger cause that little rocket will start to cost you a bit like it has already, where does it stop ?? It is a 89' model after all & personally I think your $$$$ is best spent else where....

Bummer - now its whetehr its worth it or get a new one with the costs. Feel real sorry for you!! Come have a beer tomorrow, sounds like you need one!!

I will not list what has already been done but having spent so much on it till now I'd feel a fool for not finishing it (leaving it not even running) Would come for a beer but no wheels remember.. :(

Man that sucks! Time for a new ride. Good time to buy.

Agree, plan is for me to have two bikes, one (white rocket for work and back and wife to ride and weekend bike for me) and it does seem a good time to buy for some reason, end of summer perhaps ??

Wouldn't bother buying another 250 when I have one I have spent so much on... (at this stage, not knowing the minimum I must spend yet on whitey to make go). You are correct ! knowing where to stop may well be the issue here but with receipts to the tune of $2140.68 excluding purchase price of $2800 why stop now?

Because it's a great big black hole you're throwing your cash down mate. For a full engine build you're looking at some serious coin. I'd suggest going to "The Engine Shop" direct if that is what you're wanting to do as they know their stuff.
Ball park I reckon they'll come back with over 3 grand to do the whole engine. It's about then that your 2140.68 shoots over 5k! There's an 08 Ninja for ya!
Pick up a second hand engine from somewhere, throw it in and hopefully she'll last ya for the rest of your license.

Ive reposted last weekends cruisey little ride to this weekend in the calendar. Also Chateau to Plateau is on , which some of the LOR group went on last year and enjoyed. If you are interested?

Saturday 29 Rain, possibly heavy at first, then clearing. Winds tending southwest.
Sunday 30 Fine. Southwest breezes

Try bike busters in Ngaruawahia for another engine. I know where your coming from. Do you spend a bit more and have a runner, or quit now, lose what you have put into it and look to the future? Would I cut my losses and go for a newer bike? Honestly dont know.

Yeah I know the predicament - spend the money on a new engine and know that its going to last or if the engine is shot then the only value of the bike is as spare parts to someone. I would probably (and have done in the past) do up the engine knowing I'm going to keep the bike.

And that's what I'm not keen on, as half the money already spent buy me has been in the engine itself (Camcain & tensioner, just to get started), this morning Honda Hamilton advised me I'm looking at about $900 in parts alone (pretty sure that's excluding a re-bore) and some parts are coming from Japan... so I will need to wait 3 weeks for those alone.

HH are providing me a full quote tomorrow, so will let you all know what the outcome will be.

Ride for new and experienced riders - We are not a race group and Tail End Charlie will ride to the pace of the slowest rider. As always our rides are a ride at your own pace ride and all resonsibility rests with you.

This is a shorter ride than previously up the back roads to Huntly, Heatherington Road to SH22, down SH22 to waingaro and through to Raglan for coffee. Not to long but good roads.

Anyone wants to suggest a ride or put one up they are more than welcome. Only committed ones in the near future will be the Okoroire MAG & ACC run 13th Feb, MAG Aria sponsor ride to Kaiuia or Paeroa Street races 20th Feb and the Ulysses Teddy beer run 27th Feb. Classic bikes are also at pukekohe 5-6 February

So whose coming? about 4-5 as far as I know but no-ones registered yet. Shouild be a great day

Marie and I went off to huntly the same way as you folk (after practising some hill starts at the kingsgate carpark). Went to her parents house and got her dad out on his bike and did a small loop behind the power station before riding back to Hamilton. She has picked up riding nicely. I think she will come on the next ride.

Haven't had a chance to really test my new bike. All the riding has been done at 70-90kph so far. Couldn't walk after getting home.

Yeah - I passed him at some point. Then saw him again on Ohaupo Road just as I reached home. He had gone right at Whatawhata onto Kakaramea Rd as I did but he must have cut up Koromatua Road whereas I went to Tuhikaramea Rd. I wondered how much protection the track pants had underneath... Course he probably has steel skin.

Only blight on my day was copping a sting on the chin on the way home. Ran into some insect "thwack!" followed by a stab in the chin and the usual formic acid type stinging...lucky the neck roll was there to stop the little bugger doing a full job of it...

It's always spectacular when that happens!

Years ago, in the days of half face helmets, (fullface weren't invented in the olden days) I had a wasp get stuck above my eyebrow between my forehead and the helmet. I think I still hold the world record for "fasteststopandremovalofhelmet".

Saw that bike today. Well only the back of it as it was parked up against a wall outside the workshop. Thought it was a customers bike so didn't go have a look.

You really need to test ride before you buy as the riding position is so much different to the GPX. Some dealers may let you test ride a bigger bike without the appropriate license depends on how well they know you.

Anyone wanting to plan a ride for this weekend GO FOR IT. Personally I am looking at heading to the classic bikes meeting at Pukekohe. Leaving at 11.00 hopefully (have work to do).

Last Sunday trip to Raglan (via Heatherington Rd and SH22) was a great day. 164 kms but good roads and 9 bikes attending with 3 women riders. Nice pace throughout with no one really pushing it apart from the SUV Milan met coming around the corner on the wrong side of the road PHEW!!!

Watch out for the Aria charity ride or Paeroa races (20th Feb) and the Teddy Bear run (6-800 bikes) 28th Feb (I think)!!!

Have been advised today to expect the bike back at the end of February :crybaby:

I was keen on both the Acc run ad Magnz ride too

On the upside, I'm going to buy an awesome little 89 Civic to rock around in for the mean time. Yay for being wheeled again, even if it has 2 too many.

Yup, got a written quote, why's that ?

Just been stung a few times with a "we had to do that as well" quote and "this cost a bit extra" quote and a "it needed this as well when we looked into it, so we did it" quote.

I think if its in writing you can easily say this is what I asked for and this is what you said it would cost, anything over and above that tough luck!!

I think you can have a variation of +/- 10% but I could be thinking of an estimate. You think I'd know this, being involved in the invoicing side of things and getting it drummed into me at Uni. Obviously they didn't hit hard enough at uni :)

Agreed, Grant at HH is quite reasonable to deal with and has already mentioned that the quote shouldn't change much, I am sorely missing the bike now and by the time I get it back at the end of this month, I will only have a month to go before I can get my full !

Have fun at the pub

A few of us decided that yes a wee tootle this weekend would be good - prob about 150kms or so, so should be back early Sunday arvo. Weather looks OK

Cloudy periods with a few showers. Northwest breezes

Leave Kingsgate Hotel carpark at 10.30 am and stop for a coffee and bite to eat somewhere. Unless any better ideas will probably look at west side of Karapiri over dam, through Hobbiton way, back to matamata for coffee stop, backroads back to hamilton. Nothing to hard and not to long so should be a good ride. Its in the calendar - leaving hotel 10.30 sharp - Hotel very busy with people coming to watch Nitrous circus on the Saturday night so you take your own luck if you want to get in the restaurant for a $10 full buffet breakfast from 9.30 -10.00 am

Dont forget MAG charity ride 20th (if not going to Paeroa) its in the calendar and the Ulysses Teddy Bear run 27th.

Great ride on Sunday with 14 bikes representing the Waikato on the Aria charity run up to Auckland down to Kaiuia for fush & chips and back to Hams for a cold beer. Just over 300 kms and we ended up being almost 1/2 of the bikes attending!! Thanks to Jim and the Ulysses riders who joined us on the day. Toyrun this Sunday, looks like Trina and I may be marshalling so will probably not be at the Hotel when you guys meet up (its in the Calendar) but will catch up with you all on the run somewhere.

Following week is the Bikes, BBq and Blues day in Devonport, for those interested the Ulsses Westpac helicopter charity run is on that morning so could be an opportunity to do both events?? Thinking about it???

After yesterday I have decided to do the Westpac charity ride on this coming Sunday. Will leave Hotel at 8.00 am if anyone interested. Note that the Bikes, blues and BBQ is also on that day for anyone wanting to do something different. Some of us went last year and its a pretty good day. Will be heading there for a short while at the conclusion of the charity ride. (i think a lot of others will be too)

I have adjusted the calendar to fit in the Westpac ride.

Note the Okoroire ride for the 13th of March is in the calendar. Hopefully everyone can make this event and it would be good to get a large group along. This is a Ride for Ever sponsored event and should draw 100's of bikes for the day.

Currently waiting for Honda to provide me with their best option, that could be bigger pistons and sleaves or a 2nd hand engine, I am yet to find out.

EDIT: 1:44 pm - Just spoke to the great team at Honda, 3 options availbale to me,

1. New cylinder block ($2800ish)
2. 2nd hand engine ($1800ish)
3. Re Sleave exiisting cylinder block ($ unknown)

So seriously looking option 2, I'm waiting to hear more.

Source of 2nd hand engine is Bike Breakers in Ngaruawahia I think, coming out of a ZZR. The idea may be for the new motor to get the new Cam chain & tensioner from my existing motor plus I'm hoping to be able to get them to do base and head gaskets as well for my piece of mind if it all works out this way as intended.

Holy crap mikemike, still no bike? Tell Honda to pull their fingers out, the riding season is drawing to a close......

I was beginning to wonder what was happening, but its a seriously big job (to keep it affordable for me), Kawasaki NZ didn't even help a little bit by telling the repairer the parts were available then advising that said parts didn't exist, so it'll be just like last year, I got the bike in March 2010 (the 20th from memory).

Okoroire run this weekend - all should try and make it. Its in the calendar.

Charity ride along Auckland Motorway was good and the BBBBQ afterwards was also entertaining.

One of the Westpac helicoptor's was due to land at the aftermatch of the Charity run but due to all their helicoptors being required they could only have one do a quick flyover and a nod to the crowd and off again. Obviously a very much needed operation and well worthwhile charity to support. Pity more of us couldnt have made it on the day.

Mike, dont take Honda Ham's word for too much. Get on the internet and chase the aussie dealers and wreakers yourself. I did and found all the bits I needed for two bikes, (HH) said were unavalible anywhere.

For $2800ish you can buy a complete road going bike that will last a while. Might be time to cut your losses with this Kwaka. Even with the $1800 option, if labour is added works out quite dear.

Turns out the expensive sound was very much that...same situation as Mike...new engine (well 2nd hand)! At 180,000 the bearing goes pop...I'm not that impressed considering it's been serviced religiously with decent oil (Castrol Edge) and not driven like a horny school boy.

I might see what Subaru NZ thinks about it. Yes it's mechanical, yes it wears but kinda puts a damper on the the "look after it and she'll look after you" theory.

Big end bearing? They'll probably tell you it's from over-revving or poor quality petrol leading to detonation. 180,000 is getting up there - once I hit 200k I had a lot of stuff to replace along with the cam belt like water pump and brake master cylinder and other stuff that was basically worn out

Yeah Wingers or the Subby dealer in Tauranga. Winger this time though. The guys said that apparently when these bearings start going they go bloody quick, hence why they told Brooke not to drive it back home.

By the sounds of it, it's an integral part that is built very much to either a price or to a size.

The kick in the teeth is that we've been looking to trade it in for a ute for the last 6 months...no utes we like have popped up though. Bugger.

Oh well. Such is life.

Thats the bugger. Yeah the guy from Winger said it was a little unusual for a non-turbo to not last long. Like they said, it's better to drop in a low-mileage 2nd hand engine since the k's are getting up there and you'd need to replace a lot of that stuff anyway.

I only bounced it off the limiter when going around the race track ;) It certainly didn't get over-revved. Petrol? Maybe. Seems like it could be one of those things.

A Subaru running a big end bearing? I've never heard of this... How strange... Hang on, may have heard it once, twice, maybe a few thousand times! Haha. Shitty news though man, good thinking to bin the engine, it can get rather costly with all the labour.

Hmm that 675 is the sex, need to take one for a spin first to see if thats what I'm digging, plus I'll go 2nd hand as Insurance on a new one would probably cost more than the bike!

Oh and nothing wrong with the naked hyo, being naked it stops you from speeding cause of the lack of wind protection... Hang on, maybe that's the lack of power causing that

She's done me bloody well, put 20'000ks on it in just over a year, took it to the track twice, got my knee down on it, did a few long journeys on her. Great bike, time it goes though. Any buyers? For the right price I'll throw in a night with my Sister... Hang on, haven't got one of those.

haha yeah, after doing some digging on the interweb it seems to happen a bit. Sounds like as the engines age they go from oil to no oil in a stupid amount of time and the big end doesn't like that much, and starts eating itself. They part actually costs stuff all but you have to rebuild the engine to get to it and it's not worth it.

I saw a lovely '07 STI 2.5 on Tardme last night that I thought might increase the resale  "05 STI Legacy For Sale. One of a kind." Well kinda. haha

The only nekked I'm owning in a Stripple. Once a RAT always a RAT :)

20k is a good run. I would have been happy with that. I can't even remember how many mine did. 7k maybe (seems to be a theme to "get rid" or mine when they hit that make).

Just as long as there isn't a rotor where there should be a motor

So see you on sunday Mikemike, or will we all have to chip in for your gas bill?

Yeah Subaru's have a tiny silly crank, quite a lot of big ends run from munter boy racers chucking boost taps on them and not adding anymore gas to the mix, leaning out the end cylinder and thus, destroying the engine.

Get yourself a GT-T Caldina mate, they go like a scalded cat (a lot faster than a legacy) and don't break down.

Oh and my Hyo's done 28'000ks, may there be many many more

Yeah my Mum had one, nice body kit and exhaust (most importantly manual) but otherwise standard, had it for 5 years and a fair few K's and thrashings, never skipped a beat once. Now the new owner has smashed the kit on it and is trying to sell it, idiots! Feel like kicking them in the balls for ruining such a nice car and not doing anything to fix it

The wife has driven several Caldina's and has been pretty impressed. Pity they're toyota's :zzzz: haha

There are some impressive ones though.

We still have the problem of having to fork over $6500 for a new short block so the Subby is in a position to be sold. No point might as well keep it.

:innocent: What, like mine??

I didn't know you had one. The wife is getting pressure from her folks for me to sell my bike now and get a second car. Like I've mentioned to others, it's our second vehicle. And the only way I'm prepared to lose as much money on it as I will, is if I get another Trumpy that's cheaper.

I ain't leaving with another car instead of a bike. That's just crazy talk. I may take a Stripple for a ride to see if it'll be possible to live with.

Yeah my Mum had one...

Horrible cars, the best modification is to replace the panels with paper, that will increase its strength heaps.

I had one and hated it from the start till the end, tinny toyota crap of the highest order, no way would I let my wife and kid run in one either mate.

Looks like we've both accepted the fact that we'll need to keep the Subby a little to get our monies worth.

But it can sit in the garage poked until we've sold the mini. We get to borrow a PT Cruiser for as long as we need next week. Now that's a fine piece of machinery

Does anyone know the couple on the trike? As we all made our own way home, I'd like to think one of us could contact them and make sure they got back home ok and didn't feel abandoned.

A good turn out at the bike day. I'm going back over that Mangere rd on Tuesday and checking out a couple of other roads in that area.

Good turn out at the Tavern last night 17-18 people at vaious times. Good to see.

Yes we are going to do a ride this Sunday leaving the Kingsgate Hotel Carpark 10.30 sharp (on the clock on my bike). Heading to Tauranga, down Pa's road to Rotorua and back (route to be decided). Forecast looks reasonable
Saturday 2 Cloudy periods with a few showers possible. Light winds.
Sunday 3 Cloudy periods and a few showers. Northerlies developing

Will stop for coffee and a bite to eat somewhere along the way?

Laxed out Riders are a group of riders that encourage newer riders and are not in the ride for the race. There are all types of bikes, a number of women riders and a varying degree of abilities and we expect all riders to ride safely at a pace they are comfortable with. We meet up regularly on our rides and ride for the enjoyment only.

Its in the calendar so please register if attending so we know to wait for you at 10.30 if you are not there yet.

I sussed you out way back man, I was concentrating is why I didn't say hello earlier, I had a bad run through those roundabouts a few weeks back, when a guy in a legacy took exception to me passing him on the roundabout by Heathcotes and under-passed me just after the island an had me all fucked up for the next roundabout. Aggressive prick, so yer... I was watching the road, wish I could have gotten a better look over your bike!

Yeah I thought about that and had a weird feeling it was a 'Waka. I couldn't be assed editing it since the gay honda comment is still true :D

We only see him when the sun is shining, its between 23-25 degrees, dry roads, partner lets him out, he's not gardening, not blow drying his hair, not tinting his hair, not polishing and blinging his underused machine. And he calls Honda riders GAY????

I know we have at least 6 riders going Sunday - whats up with the rest of you????

My bike is well used thank you very much. I've done 6,000km on it. Meaning with the amount of 23-25 degree days and the times when my hair isn't drying, it equates to 1253km every time I take it out :D

I'll probably be there on Sunday. If I'm not on my way to Wellington to pick up my winnings. Make that, I WILL be there.

Murray, did I mention I've changed my bike? Now have a Yamaha 2005 xvs650 cruiser. I was having a few concerns about the reliability factor of the old GB. Also want to do some weekend trips.

First few days, I wasn't sure I had done the right thing. Acouple of weeks on, I'm enjoying it more as I get used to the weight and steering.

At least the harley riders wave, untill they go past,

It certainly didn't help with her insurance thats for real !! From what we managed to establish she was travelling to close to the centre line when a lite truck coming up the hill cut the corner BANG, 1 bike behind her rode over her the 2nd bike missed her & ended up in the ditch with TEC in a ditch on the other side of the road..... I'm sure Smokey was going to :bash: her boyfriend

Was a good run, A good number of bikes. Nobody came to grief. The rain stayed away. and I kept my place in line with the new cruiser. Even got to scrape the footboards.
I followed a couple of the smaller bikes, with L plates attached, back from Ngongotaha and was good to see them pacing themselves and not passing untill they had the distance to do so safely.

I'd be pretty disapointed if this group of riders chucked in the towel because of a few clouds and a drop in temperture. Cant see that happening,
I wont be around for the next two Sundays because of work. My next Sunday off, will be Easter. If no organised group ride that weekend, I will work out a ride and anyone who wants to come along would be welcome.

I understand about the fuel money thingy. A 250k ride will cost me about $30, a couple of pies/drink.( on its own, not a lot for a days riding), Add the fuel for going to work, my own riding during the week, The car fuel and it starts to add up.
Two cars to rego this month, the bike next month, that $32 million, this weekend, just may come in handy.

Was a very good ride with mostly good roads, mostly dry weather. Not enough rain to even get wet. Good to see some new faces and some returning one's. With a few riders catching us, as the last of us left Hamilton (we got split a little at the first set of lights leaving the Hotel) we ended up with 18 bikes of all sizes and types and riders of all ages and sex.

Those that came straight back managed to get to the clubrooms to see the warriors come from behind in the second half to have their first win of the season and meet with another guy that wants to ride with us. A great fun day and good group to ride with.

Jim has suggested the Ulysses Easter ride is available next Sunday for anyone interested. Note where they are leaving from and what time. Always a good charity to support. POST NUMBER 3450

I will be away next weekend so if anyone wants to organise a ride, other than the Easter run, "go for it"

Remember riding is always best sunny side up!!!

With no organised ride this weekend (apart from Jim's Ulysses over the Kaimai's run) and no ride next week due to people being tied up with the V8's I suggest maybe we look at an easter Monday run.

I am thinking somewhere away from Holiday traffic so maybe Kawhia, or a Raglan/Waingaro loop.

Open to suggestions and whether anyone interested in riding on the Easter Monday (hands up those that are!)

On Wednesday, I'm going to do a ride through the back roads to Oto and onto Te Kuiti via the Rangitoto area. and back to Te A without hitting the highway. I've hammered the Waitomo side of HW3 so will stay on the eastern side of the main road.

Had thought it may be a backup for a sunday group ride if ever needed. I anticipate about 150ks.

If weather is crap, I'll go anyway. A good excuse to sharpen up the wet weather skills.

Anybody wants to come along, I will leave the Caltex sv stn. at 10am.

Actually guys, I have a snag re tomorrow - I have an appointment to attend at 9.30am here in The Tron that I had forgotten. I would probably be sensible to leave off the ride tomorrow since I am also getting ready to move out of my house. Either that or leave earlier or maybe not stop for coffee over there.

Thursday would be OK - we could always postpone an extra day - weather looks still OK. Or Warr and Silent might like to go tomorrow anyway.

Wotcha think?
