I had a feeling the "bleed season" would start earlier this year. I'd say it's going last longer as well.

Some streets in Te A were oozing tar by midday. The price we pay for the lowest tender I guess.
BigAl
15th December 2013, 17:59
Not much in the way of bleeding tar and real easy to see, worse is the fine metal left lying around on corners.
Did 300ks including lunch and we were back home by 1pm, job done.
guzzi_moto
15th December 2013, 19:07
I did the Waingaro loop late today (after 3 ) and the tar was certainly a bit soft, and where it wasn't soft there was loose stuff, either grit or sand. Plus everyone else was out having a drive.

I wonder why councils reseal roads in 30 degree heat. At current temperatures, I have seen new seal turn into two tracks of glazed surface in about two days (check out SH23 f'rinstance). Seems a waste of time to me.

This is a still from my xmass pressy, and doesn't really show the true state of the tar.

They re-resealed about a 30 m section of our road the other day. I say re-resealed because contractors had filled in a dip in the road and obviously it wasn't enough so came back about a month later. They were crazy efficient. They had the whole thing done in under an hour! An hour!?!?! WTF! You can't seal a bloody road properly in an hour.
It was also good to see about 80% of the traffic not even slow down 70 km/h let alone 30. Now, I'm certainly not preaching too much about that because I only slow down for to 30 when it's some serious road works. Having a look at the surface, 50 would have been fine but the majority weren't even slowing. The surface is pretty much a waste of time now. At least it's on a straight.
Road resealing is a bloody joke in this country though. It's like NASA, something so important and they award the contract to the lowest bidder. Then, because the contractor doesn't want to lose their money, they do stupid piss poor resealing jobs.
Personally, if I was giving out the money, I would be doing surface assessments after 2 months of job completion and if you don't use all your money for the year, you get bonus points for next tender and that money goes towards your next budget year. Not rocket science...;)

Wrong number or number doesn't exist? Wrong number, give a shit. Give it to the insurance company and they can charge the owner of the number :) They can then argue they didn't do it. If it doesn't exist...bugger. You still shouldn't lose your no claims since it wasn't your fault. That was my situation. Then again, I was with a broker that probably argued for me.
Edit: Wait. Scratch that. If it's under your excess of course you don't lose no claims because you don't claim. Sorry, I haven't started drinking yet so the brain is a bit slow.

Yeah, if there had been a claim I would have handed over what I had. I have emailed the council to see if there are any council cameras that can help. Not high hopes but worth a shot.
I can always hope to get some details to chase them for the money privately (small claims or whatever).
I think the steering lock saved me from more serious damage as it was pushed and the side stand folded up, but only damage on that side is to the foot peg (munted by professional opinion) and a bent gear lever.

yeah, I've been in the same situation with Kawasaki. My water pump went on the GPz over New Years, and it took 6 weeks for a replacement to arrive, this was a few years back before the power of the internet spares. Given that all Kawasaki of the GPz900/ZZR1100 series have the same water pump you would think that there would have been one in the country. Plus the price was a bit eye watering.

Same thing happened with my mates 2009 kawasaki ninja 250. Needed a new oil drain bolt as his was stripped after we got it off  Anyways we rang around garages and scrap yards and no bastard had one. It's ridiculous, no wonder people buy shit overseas, they do it to themselves. Also the price quoted was crazy high as well.

For anyone interested, Heatherington Road has several clicks of new seal at the eastern end. Most of the metal has gone but there are a few bits still lurking. Be aware.
SH22, for the first 5 to 10 clicks south of Heatherington Rd, is a little messy. Surface is very bumpy, there's a lot of crap lying about plus the odd lurking pile of stones. Again, be aware.

Decided to pick up slofox' tag as its been sitting untouched for about 3 weeks. Quick trip down from whiti with slo's pick on board to check out the express way. First time I've been on the Taupri extension. Very cool. They should remove the speed limit for bikes. (just kidding tree huggers)
It took a while to find the tag as all the roading is finished and the toitois have the fluffies up.
Cruised back up via the B roads between Taupri and Te Aroha, then Paeroa, Waihi, Whangamata, Tairua, Whitianga. Fantastic ride. I left Hamilton in the drizzle, rode into Te Aroha at a 45' angle into the wind then nice hot sticky roads to Coroglen where the heavens opened up. The rain was ok as it cooled me down and the road wasn't as slippery as I thought it might be. For the most part the traffic was pretty good, only had 1 dude get upset about being passed.
So.... Get on you bikes and have a proper ride. Make a day of it. If you're coming up here, I've got a secure place for your bike and gear while you have lunch or a swim, may even shout you a fluffy coffee.:)

Took this bike out this morning, courtesy of Boyd Motorcycles.
Felt identical to the 600 (surprise surprise) but with less need to stir the gearbox. Oh and a tendency to end up going faster than expected, due no doubt, to lower revs at any given speed... The tip in on corners required a little more effort too but that could be due to tyre difference (PR3's vs S20's).
For some reason, this one didn't grab my attention like the 6 did when I first rode that. The similarity between the two models is probably responsible for most of that but at the same time, I wasn't really moved to want to swap. Although the extra grunt is obvious and the handling is identical, this one felt a little less smooth than the 6 and instead of feeling like it had travelled 10,000km less, it felt a little like it had travelled 10,000km more. Maybe it's just what you know and what you don't. Or this one has had a harder life than my current bike.
Think I'll stay with what I have for now.

I've heard a lot of this from people have have compared the 600 with the 750. I've always thought it was weird having such similar bikes so close together in capacity. You reckon it could be the extra weight that makes it less chuckable as well?
I suppose this is one of the reasons I have no intention of ever going to a thou from the Daytona. Give me nimbleness of grunt any day. In saying that, I've never ridden the RSV4 or the S1000RR :devil2:

Have you ridden a Speedy? The main reason I went for the 1050 was TORQUE, and I'm a sucker for grunt. I prefer to ride on the torque curve instead of constantly dancing through the gearbox. And it does cope better when the better half jumps on the back.

Na, but torque is why we own any Trumpy isn't it? ;) I like my vehicles small, nimble, and light (the wife brought the truck not me :) ). Give me cornering performance over grunt any day. Give me both and I'm sold. The speedy handles awesome from what I've been told, but it ain't no Daytona. I dig American muscle but given some corners, they'd be smoked by a lesser powered Subby or VW etc every time. Hell, I've even seen a situation where a Swift embarrassed a Mustang.
Power is always handy to have in reserve though :) One day I'll jump on a litre bike and see what the go is.

"No replacement for displacement..."
Many years ago I knew a dude who said that. This was back in the olden days, when Triumph was king. You lot wouldn't remember them days but I do.
This guy owned a Thunderbird (or "Chunderbird" as they were affectionately known...). He worked on the waterfront in d'Auckland.
One of the other dudes working there bought one of these new fangled Japanese ("Jap Crap") 250cc 2 smokers. He boasted to Mr Chunderbird that his 2 fiddy would drag the Chunderbird off from a standing start. Mr Chunderbird quoted the above - no replacement for displacement. "You can't give away 400cc and still win a dragrace!" he boldly stated.
So the scene was set, and one evening after work, the drag race was staged.
Guess who came second? Three times?
Turned out there was a replacement for displacement, dinnit?

But there's no "still" about it. Remember, there was a large hole in between these bouts of popularity.
About the time when they started having holes in the engine for the oil to get fresh air wasn't it? :) That was deliberate. It more satisfying giving up a crown and getting it back when you want, rather than keeping it and getting bored. Keeps ya on ya toes see.

Like I said, membership only ;) I get sore back and arms riding on the old mans GSX650F. And on a cruiser...it feels like someone bashes my tail bone with a hammer.

In the next week or so I may put up a blog entry with my impressions of the machine. The short view is that there were things that I really liked about the machine but there were also things I didn't like especially the low screen. The motor is extremely smooth. Next Saturday I am having a try on a 2009 Wing to give a proper comparison.

Hey guys, I'm planning a small camping trip for this weekend. Have a couple of friends coming along so far, we're all respectable young fellows in our mid 20s.
Going to head out Saturday afternoon and come back Sunday evening, not too sure on location yet; somewhere within 1 hour of Hamilton and with some fun windy roads on the way. Was thinking maybe Dickies Flat DOC campsite north of Tauranga, camp out for the night and have a few beers!
This is a bit of a last minute thing, but anyone is welcome. Should be just a fun relaxed ride/camp with good company. Should be fine for riders of any skill level, learners welcome etc.

Yeah I went for a ride up there. The funny thing is, it's not all uphill but obviously you're heading up. Is a big slog but pretty good. You'll need a decent amount of fitness if you don't want to do it all day. Still doable of you're unfit though.
Like silent said, head towards the falls, go past them, then I think you take a left which is sign posted. There's a massive parking lot.
As for towbars, best bars in Frankton. You'll probably be shocked at the price difference.

Going back to Cambridge is not to bad, if you carry on down Peacocks road to Raynes road then out behind Mystery Creek its kinda fast and fun, but only safe if you've had your IAMS........

towbars, try probars in Frankton. Less than $500 fitted from what I remember for our ford.
Shit, that's the one. Best Bars are the one in Auckland that make the bike racks.

...Like silent said, head towards the falls, go past them, then I think you take a left which is sign posted. There's a massive parking lot.
As for towbars, best bars in Frankton. You'll probably be shocked at the price difference.
Thanks - I know the spot - goes to a dead end. Went there a couple of years ago and had to wake up the security guard at the entrance office asking if I could hike up - told me to piss off as I was trespassing. Nice chap. Went back to the car so he could get back to his security job of securing the premises.

Hey guys,
Wow, after 4-5 years later, this has been a long time.
Since then, I'd like to say that I've grown up a lot since then... just sold my car and bought a 03 Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm, so I will hopefully be getting out in the greater Waikato community (maybe even Auckland occasionally).
So yeah, hello again KiwiBiker group... looking forward to seeing you guys out there!

Depends on how thirsty you are!!
Nah, generally from 5.30ish onwards - dont mistake us for the Harley guys (most of us cage it anyway) as they get a few down there as Dave from HD cycles has a beer down there.

You been out on your bike lately mate? I'm not hearing of many people from the group getting out. I know I haven't, what with Brooke's business getting going and me finally working on our windows. I rode into town to get a drill bit last week and when I got back, my shirt was drenched! That just tells me I need to ride faster to get some airflow happening  (and a decent distance of course).

Brooke had one (can't actually remember why she got rid of it now) but my jacket has so much perforation it's sweet when I go normal speed. Well, it's sweeter. Eventually I'll end up getting one with more perforation maybe even a full suit. So essentially it'll just be a holy mess.

At least you're doing some decent roads. The times I've ridden, it's been up to Dorkland or to the airport (Hamilton!). Pathetic really. Oh, I did ride out to Eric's new place on the way to Raggers. Probably the most decent ride. Paeroa would have been cool, but Brooke's in Oz this weekend and Lockie goes in for the full round of kiddie ops this friday (tonsils, the other thingies that sound like astroids, and something to do with his ears). I've been wanting a decent ride. Even wiped the dust off the bike last week!

Basically a big black rubbish bag you put your helmet/leathers etc in and then its sealed and stored and you are given a ticket. The pub on the corner at the southern end of the town does it. Never been on a Saturday but assume they do it then to. Just a short walk from the main car-parking area.
